As a kid, I would use an innertube tied to my cutoffs, with a peach basket stuffed in it. Mask, snorkel, fins, and a crab net with 1/2 handle. Around my dock, within 30 minutes, I'd fill that basket! Another 30 minutes, those crabs were cooked and eaten! Softshells the best! Fried on white toast tartered with lettuce. 😻

awesome vid bro. Seems to me it is the whole experience that matters not just the meal at the end. Heck paddling around in a kayak checking traps and breathing the fresh air is pure gold!

You bring back so many memories for me when I was a kid of 6 or 7 up on Long Island. We used crab nets to scoop the blue crabs who would hang out on the bulkheads, docks and pilings. Then we would boil them up. What a treat! My grandfather used to go out to his spots amongst the marshes and sand bars of the Great South Bay. He had crab traps too that he deployed from his boat. He also had “killie-rings” which were a circle of hanger wire that he strung killie fish (minnows) on as bait. A good length of twine was attached to the rings. We threw them out in 6-12 feet of water. It didn’t take long for the crabs to find them. Crabs are greedy. Even though we were pulling them in on the killie-ring they were pulling back. Once near the boat we used a crab net to scoop them up.

So great to see a crabbing video! Been interesting observing the MD folks over the last couple years. Re: bait, yes, some still do the chicken necks. Eel was the favorite until recently, but even our own Chesapeake eel was priced out of affordability. Most recently, i saw crabbers in the famed Kent Narrows region using some BIG wild shrimp. Guess it depends on the going rate. Others were using little clams but i'm sure the shrimp were catching more. Boy, they were pungent. Last thing, if you haven't already read it, might i suggest one of the best books i've ever read: Beautiful Swimmers by William Warner. This book had a profound impact on me. It's biological but also poetic and will take your breath away. Thanks again for your work, bud!

Gonna drop my first 5 set this coming monday. Picked up the local grocery stores' 10lb for $6.99 leg quarters, let them thaw and sit saturday and sunday to ripen for those crabs senses.
I've all the salt commercial licenses but I only rec. for crabs. 5 here in Fl. too, except this year we had to add a hard 2"X6" device to the openings. Sea turtle stopper the tree hugging bureaucrats came up with-but only for rec crabbers(???).
When I moved here everyone boiled, then I met a couple from Maryland and they only steam, far more flavor in steaming.
