  • Don't make this mistake when visiting a Championship Golf Course!
    A few weeks ago, we stopped at Trump Turnberry Hotel and played the Ailsa Championship Course at Turnberry Golf Club.
    This was one of our bucket lister golf courses to play, but unfortunately I left with a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth, and this is nothing to do with Trump Turnberry, this could happen at any Championship Golf Course.

    Good honesty Gaz ...I know some people have done this at st Andrews mate ....caddie or not a caddie 🤷...I'd prefer no caddie and a 2 ball don't get this your partnering up nonsense if I paid £500 plus I'd want what I need not the course mate

    Totally agree with you who you play with on these courses makes a huge difference like any round of golf. For me I'd rather play mates and enjoy it. Golf is a strange game and you get some equally strange people. We tend to try and avoid the peaks and just go out on our own to enjoy it and not have to deal with people we ordinarily wouldn't play with.

    Caddied for many years at a country club in America. It was just assumed that you would help look for any player’s ball. Also, the players were there to play with each other, not only deal with the caddie. Really strange that this was your experience. I’ve had some of my most pleasant rounds when I got paired up with other players.

    I know exactly what you mean, I find it the same in a four-ball when two buggy and two walk. Either all walk or all buggy otherwise it gives that weird vibe you talk about. Good and honest video👍

      How can you ignore the fact that it is owned by a man convicted of 34 felonies and counting. His companies treatment of the locals on the Mennie Estate in Aberdeenshire was appalling and still is. Jan 6th. Can we ignore that as well. It may be the best golf course in the UK but some things are more important than golf.

    For me, if you go to one of these top courses, Im not being paired up with anyone I just wouldnt play simple as. I want to enjoy the day which is a huge rip off anyway for 18 holes of golf with the people I have chosen to play with not randomers. I would never have a caddie, I want to play the course how I see it, and if its bad its bad but I find it more run that way.

    • @garymartingolf
      @garymartingolf  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I know what you’re saying, but you don’t have a choice if you’re a 2 ball. You can’t stop them pairing you if somebody wants to join your time, all you could do, is ask to be moved back.

    Sad that such a bucket list course couldn't be enjoyed toits full potential, it is too easy for some to forget that for most people golf is a socially engaging sport, and without that, it does not matter which course you are on, it is not as enjoyable.
    Still nice little vid Gaz

    Played there 8 days ago. Out in a 3 ball with 2 English men who both had caddies. Had a great day. Both golfers were very chatty and the caddies were very helpful with me. I never expect help from a caddie which someone else had paid for. Personally i find the article just a big whinge. Cant believe someone would even make a comment about it

    I play one of the windiest golf courses on the planet, top of the South Downs, overlooking Eastbourne, we hand and an Anemometer and the wind destroyed it, blows at 40mph plus a couple of days a week. Problem is, most windy courses are built and designed for a South Westerly, which was the prevailing wind, we now get regular Northerly’s, Easterly’s and these make the courses difficult and too long. You really learn how to shape the ball and ball flight, without these skills, you wont enjoy the game.

    • @garymartingolf
      @garymartingolf  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That sounds brutal! Even with the mild wind at Turnberry, you can’t forget a fancy swing, it’s just a battle of striking the ball solid and low 😃

    I see your point but I’ve met some great people golfing. On a course like that I’d want to enjoy the course without distractions or strangers or even caddies! 😂 I never played expensive golf courses but when we played Coeur d'alene as a trip package we got to play alone both days and they set it up that way.. 👍

      We don’t mind playing with people at all, we wanted too, but now we’ve experienced playing with a pair who has caddies, I would say, it’s less sociable than being in a 2. We’d of had more fun in a 2.

    Whether you’ve got a caddy or not you should still help a player look for a ball, that just doesn’t sit right with me. It’s common courtesy and caddies should be the first ones to offer help as they know the course better.
    I can only assume they weren’t approachable enough to ask for help.

    It is a pity you both had a sour taste to your bucket list round, maybe, you should have spoken to someone, if not before the round, after, be honest, you have every right, they will not be aware there was a problem, sufficient to spoil your round, tell them, you might get another round from them, all customers have the right to say something, when an expensive experience, does not live up to the cost being charged.
    Gary, I play in strong wiynds most times of the week. Links course on the Lancashire coast. It can get pretty strong, 30-40-50mph is commonplace. Played a match early in the season, with winds gusting at 65mph, we didn't mind. Two of our par 3's normally 7irons or 9 irons, were both driver, and I managed to par them both, landing on the green like a butterfly settling on a flower. Playing partners had no idea, they landed way short, in long thick wet rough. Always better to prepare for strong wind, its a game within a game. Stinger territory.

      Honestly, In all the years I’ve played golf, I couldn’t have pre-empted what happened. I can’t remember ever playing in a 4 ball, and not feeling part of a 4 ball 😂
      Honestly, I personally, loved the wind, I just wish I had practiced for it before we arrived. I think, if you’re used to playing in the wind regular, you’re a good golfer!
      I really enjoyed focusing more on striking the ball solid and low, it actually improved my accuracy as I was aspiring to hit perfect shots, in some cases, I was just aspiring to advance the ball in the direction of the green 😄
