- In this episode of What to do and Who's to blame of the Russian Literature, I review a series of short stories Dark Avenues (Dark Alleys) by Ivan Bunin. I'll tell you a bit about Bunin himself (he's a Nobel Prize winner), recap the plots for a few of the stories and talk about themes.

Thank you so much for this review! Bunin and Kuprin are often advised as "novels for girls", therefore many Russian girls read them at the age 14-17 and take what's written for granted. It's important to revise these books with an adult brain so we could strip them down of this "adorable literature for youth" badge. I wish every parent would sit down with their child and go through each of 38 stories together applying critical thinking to what's actually going on there and what article of modern criminal code described actions would classify as.
I am afraid many men do view us like that: all attention to "hot chicks", conditional attention to "doable chicks" and no attention (to the point of non-existence) to "ugly chicks".
And then I am wondering why I allowed men to treat me badly. After growing up on "classic" literature that was highly advised to us to form a better personality. This literature! Where women are objectified, where their wishes and values are not taken into any account.
Same as for "Lolita" I demand this book to be published with a condemnation on its cover, saying that this is NOT how one should treat any soul.
