  • Dostoevsky's tale is actually fascinating and I believe that in order to understand his writing, you need to know it. It has it all: ambition, crime, prison, exile, love, betrayal, affairs, casinos, religion and books.
But also, for me personally, learning his story helped me in solidifying my dislike of him, so to each their own.
And I am officially now a proud hater of Dostoevsky.

Thank you so much for this comprehensive review of Dostoyevsky! I am from the camp of his haters, so I wouldn't bother to study his biography nor books thoroughly. Some biography details (such as sick mother and near execution) explain some of his views and actions, but they do not explain why he is being shoved down our throats as an example of high moral and high literature.

I wouldn't go into morals, but if you can't see why he's one of the greatest writers that ever lived, perhaps you shouldn't be taking reading seriously.

@@skipper6967 I didn't enjoy his style of both using Russian language and storytelling. I guess it's just not my type. Amongst Russian writers I prefer Pushkin, Turgenev, Chekhov, Dovlatov, Aksenov styles. Amongst foreign ones I like Dumas (father), Balzac, Jane Austin, Geoffrey Chaucer styles.
