I think ‘eeee-scalate’ translates as ‘escalate’, as in ‘lift up’, or the big steel things, shaped like stairs that move from floor to floor, and you stand on them and are transported to an upper-level, I.e. an ‘escalator’.
It could be that it's spelled e-scale-ate on Ian's teleprompter, to play on the word scale, and force the pun.
Sterling by MM are a great starting point as well.. even the RAY4 series HH ($450) can be insanely good with a few changes (PU's Pre), and they have extremely comfortable neck profiles.

Warmoth is a great option for assembling an affordable bass. Thick slab fretboards with ton of options with steel reinforced necks with carbon fiber option and slim taper along with nut width and wood options. Bodies are 1 3/4 thick as well. Have put a few together that are life long keepsakes.
Absolutely!! Over the years I have built 10-15 Warmoths. I still have most of them. 4 Jazz, 1 P/J, 1 fretless 5 Gecko and a fretless 6 Gecko. I used to work at a very famous guitar factory in Nashville back in the early 90's and so I learned how to put guitars together. You can get high quality stuff from Warmoth for relatively low cost. The stuff that drives up the cost is features (binding, inlays....anything aesthetic) hardware, electronics and the finish. I have experimented with all of these as I'm definitely a tinkerer. It can be a money pit but it can also be done very efficiently. The main thing is to get high quality woods and a good fret job and after that, everything else is basically gravy. It's been a lot of fun building them and I still gig and record with them. Definitely worth looking into

For fit, finish, and feel, Lull is in the upper class, for sure. For me personally, a Lull I demoed in Seattle: top 3 basses I've ever played. 10 minutes with it, gave me that impression.

I have an Ibanez Talman that I've had extensively modified. It cost about £250.
I've spent a little bit on it since. It's now fretless, with a polyester coated board, and has a Nordstrand BigMan pup, and has been converted to passive.
It sounds great now.

The number on thing you need to do to a budget bass to make it special is give it a high quality fret level and crown treatment and setup. If you don't do that, none of your other upgrades will be enough.
I always loved the album cover on Ted Nugent’s live album (intensities in ten cities) - he was wearing a loin cloth, with guitars growing out of his wrists while crowd diving. Epic!

Any bass at any price has two basic cost factors: Labor and Materials. There is only so much you can do to cut the cost of materials. This breaks down into quality, quantity and availability of wood, plastic and metal. Only so much labor can be eliminated through automation, the rest is bound to it's local price for labor combined with available trained personnel and the price necessary to retain them. If you buy a 'cheap' bass (or any instrument for that matter) figuring you'll have to 'adjust it' just a bit, you need to factor that additional cost into the original purchase price and determine if that additional outlay would have been more appropriate at the initial sales counter. Many say it's cheaper to build your own from a kit, but exclude the value of the labor involved. IMHO, it's hard to beat an Ibanez bass for the price.

The string tension will be the same regardless of the non playing length otherwise the string would not be in tune.
There will be a slight increase of string elasticity with the extra nut to capstan length.
The head weight will have an effect on the pitch of the resonance of the entire neck and body torsional mode. This mode is the lowest resonance of the bass. The one that you can test by finding the node at around the second fret , hanging the bass frome there , and banging the outer edge of the body with your palm. That resonance is the one that will suck the energy out of a note on the G string at around the fifth fret when its Q is too peaky . Usually caused by skinny neck.
That's also the same note that gives tracking problems on octave dividers because there is not enough fundamental left in it.

As Ian can attest to, 99% of 23:59 my basses are modded , For my latest Frakenbitch, it’s 1998 Fender Deluxe Jazz neck, that I put on to a Squire Jazz.

That Olinto is insane. I love how thin they make their bodies. I'd like one but I enjoy building my own great--RELATIVELY--cheap FSO/basses with top-shelf parts, hardware, pickups, etc--Musikraft necks--roasted quarter sawn, dark rosewood slab, clay dots, Gotoh Res-O-Lite, Lindy Fralin, Spitfire tort pickguards, nitro lacquer finishes... I don't mess around with mediocre or junk stuff. Honestly, they're as nice as Fender Custom Shop. Hint: Musikraft made-to-order Fender-type necks--AMAZING! How more people don't know by now is beyond me.
i know this vid is a couple months old. but i took my orange ibanez mikro, which i love, and hot-rodded it. all blacked out hardware: metal knobs from amazon, hipshot type a bridge, gotoh mini tuners and geezer EMG tuners. new strings and a setup. looks awesome, sounds awesome, and so fun to play. so yeah, way more than $170 in improvements for a $170 bass :)
Just did a budget project on my squier sunburst pj bass. Upgraded the stock pickups to emg geezer butler pj set. And changed the pick guard to brown tort from warmoth. Changing the pickups eliminated the hum and gave more tonal variety. I love it. I’m next considering the bridge (hipshot kickass or fender hi mass) and machine heads (gotoh, or hipshot).
I’m looking at getting a vintage v40 coaster and putting in geezers emgs in it 😂

My first bass was a no brand kit jazz bass for about $250. Sounded great but there were a few things I didn't like. After thinking, I wonder if I could fix this or that, I ended up deciding I would try to do a '62 replica in shell pink with stacked pots. The only thing I didn't replace was the tuners because they are fender with a Schaller drop-tuner on the e. New pickups, new hardware, vintage pickguard, sanded the neck and teaked it to soft as a baby's bottom. Put on rounds. Between parts and materials I put about $400 and 3 months into it. The thing is, it's not perfect. The paint job is a Monet, looks good from a distance. I had to rewire the pickups multiple times because I didn't have a configuration for the stacked pots. But I learned so much in doing it! Seriously, so worth it even if it's not perfection just because I know how everything works and I know I can fix most problems that might come up in my other basses now. It's an expensive hobby but I found I love doing it and want to stick with it.
My next project is a Harley Benton Stingray 5 I got for $125, which was surprisingly high quality in the first place. Ebony fretboard, poplar body. Just a few upgrades but we'll see how it goes!

Here is an idea. $300 bass and do $300 in mods. Do a demo and recording. Then raise the mod budget to $600 and demo / record again. Give an honest impression if doubling the mod budget was worth the return.

I wanted a Jamerson type of P Bass. I bought a "Sawtooth" from China for 180.-. I put in a Tonerider Precision plus pickup an old Wilkinson bridge and TI Jazz Flats. Did some setup tweaks, reshaped the neck and the headstock. It's perfect now. Low action ,no buzzing anywhere. I can't imagine that any of those high dollar P basses would be betterSo 250 bucks and it is as good as a P with flats needs to be.
Tough to beat a Sire at the $1,000 price point. (Still standing by waiting for your visit Ian.)
If you guys want affordable quality you 100% HAVE to check out Edwards and Bacchus... the Bacchus woodline series range from $500-2000 and are SERIOUS bang for the buck.
Take something styled like a 50s P and make all the upgrades modern as frag! No vintage guy will be happy, especially with the DG preamp you stuck in there.
Make it a violin bass with all the least violin bass upgrades.
to be honest if you pick a solid built budget bass, like a squire / ibanez etc, and give it a really good set up (new nut, level crown polish good stings) That would probably be enough. but keep it under £500. Pickups can be done at a later time, most machine heads are good enough but can be upgraded at a later time. Picking up a really well set up bass where the fret board doesn't slice your hand, the acoustics resonate through the body is enough to stop anyone putting it down
loving the idea of this shop, particularly the idea of modifying more affordable basses - I think that's quite a unique idea that a lot of people would jump on. It expands the options for bass players with lower budgets, which lets face it, is probably the majority of bass players haha!
🎉Hey Scott and Ian! I actually love hot rodded affordable basses and guitars. I personally have a mic p bass i replaced everything and turned it into late 50s p bass(black ploy body, fender nitro rw 50s neck, fender vintage hardware and covers) i only now want to replace the electronics. It looks like the new vintera 2 50s p bass lol. I also have a squier 60s jazz with a AAA flamed maple neck and dark laurel(looks like rosewood) board. I added 60s early 60s tuners, bridge, covers , 64 repro tort gaurd, rest. Stock moslty but sounds and plays good. I also rolled fretboard edges. Came with bone nut and i threw on fender flats 45-105. Looks like vintera 2 60s jazz lol. On the guitar side i did up a fsr squier shell pink strat late 50s style. Only thing stock is body and neck. 😊 I do own some mexican fenders(75th anniversary badge vintera 50s p in seafoam green with covers and rest and flamed neck, 2021 flea sig. 1961 replica custom order shell pink jazz bass with covers and rest, 2016 road worn 50s p 2 tone sunburst i added fender bone nut, and vintage covers and rest that i reliced to match the road worn look, and i also consider my parts bass to be a fender. I do have by lick a 1978 p bass i had to replace a few pickgaurd screws and the rest but all original other than that with the original case with hang tags. Has the choke out starting at 12th fret and up but it will need a 500 to 600 dollar neck press job and possibly new frets so another 300 and i have already jad the neck worked on. I decided to leave it as it came and not play second octave only simple grooves😂.
I picked up a a Soundgear SRMD200 on sale at Guitar Center for about $250. I really like the 32" scale, its a comfortable neck and body, P/J pickups that are surprisingly decent if not spectacular, and an onboard preamp. I liked it enough I have not changed out anything, bridge intonates well, tuners keep it in tune, etc. It would be a great platform to mod if you want.
I would also like to point out that I did a 5 hour set with a couple breaks, switching between to my Hofner copy or a couple songs, and was greatly appreciative of it's lighter weight and easy playability. I've got some pretty nice basses, but this cheapo held it's own pretty handily.
Another one I got cheap was an SX 6-string Jazz bass. The pickups are not spectacular (mine had actually come apart internally) and the bridge was a cheapo that had to be replaced, but the body is nice, cool candy apple red finish, and the neck is actually really good. 2 truss rods, and some decent figure to the maple (maple neck, maple fretboard). I did clean up the fret ends a bit, otherwise it plays really well.
One advantage of the reverse headstock is that it lets the thicker strings be longer, which transfers sound into the head and neck better.
FGN basses from Japan (especially the non export range) are IMMENSE value for money, as good as a lot of US Fenders, but there is not a good line for them in the U.K., you can get the brand new ones but the used ones in Fender shape (rather than the Boundary export style) are great. If you could import a load you might have a fantastic product that could go out cheap.
Some manufacturers call that paint thingy on the back of the headstock/neck a Stinger. Definitely a cool bass.

My inner requirement is making not any random bass but specific flavour inspired from a classic and add personal innovations on top ..
my up and coming project a Wal style under £1000 before the end of the year . So of course now we are talking : it is indeed possible .. but it does require luthier skills , wood tones , common sense and audio electronic knowledge. not just changing parts.
I find that "ultimate inexpensive basses" topic really interesting. Hot rodding Squiers is kinda obvious. It would be really cool to have a well-informed source to either buy "professionalised" entry- or mid-level basses and/or to have true and tested upgrade documentation. Shielding electronics, proper setup and better/lightweight tuners will get you very far already, imho. Maybe even give it a Plek job. Regarding brands that kill it in the "under 1000 bucks" range, I would say Sire for Fender shaped objects and Cort for more "modern" leaning basses (e.g. the Artisan series). Both are Indonesian made and they really upped their game in the last years. Excited where you are going with this idea :)
You’re thinking about it wrong. Instead of brand. Think about carrying individual budget bases from many different brands that outperform or add something unique. Think the Squier Paranormal Rascal bass, or the Sire V5 24 fret bass
Re budget bass: below 250 bucks there´s nothing you could improve on a Harley Benton - these are incredible instruments within their price range. But that range between 400-750 bucks (Squier to Fender Player territory) is not touched by retailers like Thomann (most probably not to butcher sales on the Squier/Fender/Marcus Miller lines). That could be a quite interesting price point as it would leave some financial room to improve certain aspects (like machine heads but also probably high quality preamps like Noll/Delano or quarter-sawn/flamed necks).

Scott and Ian, here is my unsolicited opinion in regards to the online bass shop...
You two should set up the main shop for bourgeois boutique basses, yes, that's a great idea. BUT, also, Sharon could have a spot in the same shop, that could be set up for more down to earth prices. Things like tuner and pickup modded Squier basses. Maybe a self made Sharon signature line of franken-basses?
I can't even afford to get myself into your wonderful SBL program. I get whatever content I can from you for free. I have learned from you for years, and I love you for that. I'm happy you have Ian, and Sharon aboard. Before I go on any further, I owe you a thank you.
I don't comment on YT, so forgive me for not including any "yo's bro's or tho's."
I scratch build basses at home because I can't afford the boutique basses I envy. I could be a helpful asset somehow, I'm sure. I'd like to offer my help however I can. I could assemble these basses, for instance.
I think, SBL could have a bass test off which would produce great content also as a byproduct, to find the SBL approved bass husk, wether it be squier or harley benton or whatever ultimately is chosen, and then subsequently distinguish the choice pickups and tuners that would replace the stock hardwares. This way, the shop could include a line up of these SBL approved pre-setup and modded out of the box franken-basses. I think that 1k is fair for that research, labor, quality control, and SBL stamp of approval.
There could even be a packaged up kit option that the even more budgeted player can home assemble for $800.

Academy member here expressing a professional opinion. Acknowledging that this chat is not monitored by the c-suite but wanted to chime-in regardless. I am sure your CMO is on it but there needs to be careful consideration not to diminish the aspirational element of your offerings as you may run the risk of "cannibalizing" new memberships and/or renewals. Instruments that price wise are unattainable for most of your members (assumption) romanticize the experience and drive the aspirational piece of the offering. If the functional side gets reinforcement by increasing the affordability factor of instruments you would be marketing, the levels of GAS generated may tend to be weighed against the cost of membership which de facto is attainable to all your members and/or upsells (i.e. accelerator type offerings) which are a stretch.
Budget instruments sounds like 500 USD to me... But I could see a bump up to 1000 USD to improve some parts, or even 1500 USD to add some specialties. Almost like Sire range of instruments (V3, V7/8, V10).
A squire p or j with a good set up is already they prefect bass for 75% of people. Covers 100% of people that are looking for budget. $220 and a few allen wrenchs and a bit of your time and its really good.

Speaking of budget bass, I took the recommendation of @LowEndLobster, and I bought a 250 USD Squier Jaguar H (and a mod platform) and replaced the stock humbucking pickup with a Aguilar DCB-M (for another 190 USD), and I’m really happy with it: now I have a nice medium scale bass, with an amazing sound! I’ve played with it in gigs that have other musicians thinking it’s an expensive instrument!

Coppolo definitely uses a big headstock, AND I feel compelled to mention that you can request either a lam OR slab fingerboard (for example I have an LG5 with a thick slab too). It’s really too bad that Olintos and Allevas are so rare, because they sound and feel so special.
Store could stock up-right basses and mono-synths too 🙂

A bass where the “bones” are the priority. Mod platform basses that have great basic woods with priority on great necks/fretwork. And functional basic hardware/electronics. Then have upgrades for pickups, tuners, bridges, and so on to make the bass yours. You could buy it unfinished or painted . But the instruments have to feel like they are worth upgrading and you’re not just polishing a turd.
My Squire Bass VI plays way better than my Fender…No joke!!!! i was very disappointed with the Vintage specs of the Vintera series…the saddles suck…to adjust the truss rod…you must take the neck off….Vintage specs are NOT always better…my Squire spanks that MIM Fender

The key to this I repeat is knowing what one good trick pony one wants .. years ago , and it is all amateur , I wanted too much versatility .. it leads to average ment ..
mind you these days I can do several trick ponies in one instrument ..
I keep forgetting Scott is from another part of the world, good for you lad. That is Uncle Ted Nugent, he's an American. I got me a rock and roll band, its a Free for all baby, Murica !.
Scotts all professional about everything he does, time to forget about all that professionalism if you want to play the American music buddy. There's real music or classical training, then there's America, home of Chuck Berry and Kenny Rogers. A lot of good stuff though, but it's very loose and relaxed, it's a free-for-all.
This is how I approach my playing, loose and as long as people are having fun this is all I'm worried about. When I meet someone with actual musical training, I feel like an idiot because I don't have that. Most of American music is centered around dancing, having fun, not thinking about anything, it's not anything like traditional music was. Some people are over trained, they sound amazing and blow your mind, but dancing is not going happen, this can be a bit awkward for a dance party. ( it's not you Scott, I am talking about a certain Blonde kid with more hair than both of us combined ). Now they have to be self taught, to learn how to play loose or even sloppy ! , hard to get into that whole mindset of literally whatever goes, it's kind of like improv. There's going to be awkward moments, once Prince fell off the stage and landed on a bunch people. Nowadays people want to play everything, this was never like this before, but now people play 46 genres each. It's like ya, I teach the Blues as a side gig, for my Metal band.
In Europe, you guys are still more traditional you have a older culture. Traditionally is where people sit down silently, watching a musician play their instrument and I would be extremely nervous like that. I only play bass, I'm not actually a musical genius like some of you guys. I imagine It must be hard to get classically trained on the bass, first of all. Must be hard for any traditional musician prodigy to downgrade themselves into playing hootnanny music !. Ludwig Von Hillbilly, anyone ?. It's perfect for me, my situation. Now all the money and attention is focused on that, music invented by non- geniuses who took questionable substances and whatever. You don't need to be a genius to play this stuff, it's not that type of learning process. Dunno, oh well I am rambling again.

How much are fender necks and bodies? Or warmoth. Because if everything is being replaced then why buy the hardware and electronics!

Yea, the whole "budget" hot rodding is not really a thing a thing. more of a pipe dream really. I currently own 15 basses with more to come and all ranging from signature boutique to run of mill budget basses (such as squiers) and after a few mods they are worth as much as mid to high end bases. I usually buy really worn squiers, carlo robelli, hammer, early generation bassmods, yamaha, and many others and depending on the mods each probably has about $1k invested into it to make them "Special" or unique... its simply not possible to build them for cheaper unless you are getting high volume discounted parts from manufacturers. Hipshot tuners are about $350 for USA made the licenced cheaper option about $50 cheaper, good bridge depending on finish is upwards of $200, and affordable pick ups and electronic set up from any manufacturer is $350+ for a set! More boutique pres are $350 on their own if you want truly "special or unique" same is said for high end pick ups with different finish varieties. Then we also need to factor in pick guard / body routing for pick ups, battery compartments, or preamp. Possible drilling for new knob configuration or modification to preamp is concentric knobs need to be added to prevent additional drilling into the body. Labor for proper bridge install, tuner install, set up and intonation, strings.... this isn't even factoring in any possible aesthetic modifications such as custom acrylic pick guards / trust rod covers, jazz plates , or even custom knobs. We still have decals or additional engraving.. and at the end you still have to deal with the low quality of a neck.. a good custom or aftermarket neck from company like warmoth is $500 - $1000 depending on the wood. and thats providing that the neck pocket even matches and does not even need to be routed (which is something i had to do on a $200 squier affinity). So all in all the luxury to hot rodding a bass it the benefit to not have to spend all that money at boutique at once and having every piece of the the build custom made to one's liking. Now keep in mind i used pretty much all preamp, pick up, hardware companies worth buying I could find for the sake of variety with labor work done by Pete Hanewinckel of Hanewinckel guitars. So I definitely don't believe its possible. Youd simply be providing work that people already do at their local luthiers. $1500 would be the very minimum for "special" other wise companies like squier / Harley benton / yamaha / ibanez would have all already done it. There's so many different styles of electric basses out there and I like a well rounded style of music, U2,Rush and Iron Maiden, 3 bands but also 3 different styles of bass guitar so short of me buying one of each of the styles how the heck does one figure out what bass guitar to get first, or should I go on the body shape more than the pick-ups used please 🥺
