Wow Chris you make it look easy. Just got a 16 and sail off the beach in Ocean City. I am having the hardest time getting off the beach. Every time I get going I lose control and the wind immediately. Do you have any pointers for a newbie?

First make sure you have functioning rudders (good working cams plus no slop in the rudder blade or casting). Set the main traveler car about 6 inches from center & sheet in the main & jib about half way (but not too powered up). You can't lock your rudder down (should not try) until you clear the surf. It's important to maintain boat speed through the surf by "falling off the wind" a bit. It will require a little bit of muscle to go thru surf with out the rudder locked down but keep your course and your boat speed up. Also make sure your rudder blades stay in the water & don't get kicked up while sailing thru the surf. You can only steer the boat if the blade is in the water!! Once you clear the surf line, steer the boat "into the wind" - almost to "irons" and lock the rudder down. (It is very difficult to lock the rudder down with the boat moving). Once the rudders are locked, "fall off" the wind.
