Alternative rock outfit Cage the Elephant completely surprises me with a record of songs that have uniformly interesting production, energetic performances, memorable hooks, sharp melodies, and a pretty diverse array of instrumentation. Bravo!
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

Melonphobia.
Oh my fuck
Diego Simón André Reyes Concha good.
That's how I read it in the first place
why is this so fucking funny
i knew someone had already said it
This was before the Red Flannel awoke as this blood-driven, life-stealing beast.
He contained it within the black sweatshirt this time. It just wasn't ready yet.
Yes
He had a jacket over the red flannel to signify his expectations going in vs how much he liked it.
MAN lmmmaaaooo
MAN I had this thought right after he said he liked it
This coding man
telescope is a really great song
Your profile picture doesn’t match your name
Time is like a leaf in the wind
Did you stand there all alone?
Oh I cannot explain what's going down
Chris Rosado fairly sure that’s cigarette daydreams
i hate that song wtf
The lyrics are pretty close to Shakespearean.. "Spiders in my head, spiders in my mind"- Spiderhead
"Oh full of Scorpions is my mind" - Macbeth
Adam Nope ikr
“Take my eyes but I’m not blind” King Lear anyone?
honestly, it's just too catchy. i'm on it heavy.
oo na alam na namin
U kinda look like a melon, if you haven’t noticed
you're on it heavy

Cage The Elephant is one of my favorite bands, and Melophobia is definitely the best album i've ever heard. I saw them live and i was lucky enough to push my way to the front and i must say it was the greatest experience ever. It was so surreal, the lighting made it even so much awesome. I personally thought they even sounded better live.
Just saw them live a few days ago and yes they sound so much better live. All the lights and loud music and dancing and auroa that Matt gives off is just so fun
yeah, i'm digging on it heaaaaaavyyyyyy

Hi from 9 months ago, yes
Take it or leave it is such an amazing track.
its my favorite song from them
I love Halo, Hypocrite, Telescope, Take It or Leave It, Spiderhead. Basically Almost The entire Album

daniel mcdermott same honestly
daniel mcdermott yeah definitely the best song the Strokes have made
this album aged so well, I still listen to it regularly >.
Fave songs: halo, telescope, cigarette daydreams
@@erinvalenzuela7167 mine are Spiderhead, Cigarette Daydreams, and Come a Little Closer
Come A Little Closer, Telescope, Halo, Hypocrite
I think shake me down has an amazing lyric, just me?
I completely agree! It's one of my fave songs
and In One Ear
Victor Schack shake me down is deep af
They have some solid singles from their other albums. I still think this is their best overall album tho :>
In One Ear is pretty cringe
Cigarette daydreams is my absolute favorite song right now
Still is.
Same ong
I used to be a "only like the singles" fan of cage the elephant until I heard the new album. My favorite track is teeth. To me It sounds like jack white/white stripes at the beginning then the gorillaz at the end.
Same, my favorite Gorillaz tracks are probably Kids With Guns, Dirty Harry, Rinestone Eyes, and Clint Eastwood, but to be honest I love almost every song of theirs.
I like the first CTE release. The lyrics are immature, but they're honest. I think the garage rock almost punk stylings made them interesting in this world of pretentious whining. Sometimes I just want to listen to some kids who don't have their heads up their asses.
Thank you
+AuspexAO TBH it's frustrating how such a massive portion of what he considers important in his reviews are the social commentary of the lyrics. The amount of information and that can be inserted in a 4 minute song, or even an hour long album, is so small, and they're not bringing ANY new perspective to any serious societal issues. So basically, yes, sometimes, we just want to hear some good music.
Packercat17 Listen to TPAB and u might change your mind about that lol
Yessss thank you, you wrote exactly what I was thinking.
Anthony can feel it in his Teeth, best in the game
just about to make that joke but seems i was two years late
@@despresso4295 i was about to make that joke but turns out im 3 years late
welp im 4 years late for the joke

I could continue the joke in the thread but instead I'm just gonna ruin it
This is, IMO, easily their finest record. Their first two albums are meh, but Melophobia is a home run.
I liked Thank You Happy Birthday because of the diversity in sound but that's just me and my preference
Thank you happy birthday is all over the place but the music sounds really solid
true true but that first album was actually fire tho
my man did not just say thank you happy birthday is meh
Personally, I loved their self titled album and I love this one even more. It's very relaxing with songs like "Cigarette Daydreams" and "Telescope" but also goes nuts with "Teeth". Idk. I love it. I love them. I love you all.
do you still love us all?
@@eysham hope he still love us all
Time for the yearly check up to make sure you still love us all
Personally I like how they don't show a set direction, and how they change their sound a lot.
Back when the red flannel didn’t mean anything...
i'd recommend sitting down and trying out "thank you happy birthday" again, its literally just a consistent poem to me. I hate how some people hate that album like it went right over there head and they didn't even try listening to it or anything.
+Mike Faust TYHB is by far my favorite
okay, Kudos
I guess you could say The message went....... In One Ear...
If we don't like it we are intellectually inferior. Got it.
Faustika The Shitlord same... at first it seems odd like when I first got into cage the elephant. But now thank you happy birthday is probably my favorite of the four.
Pretty cool album. Great to listen when you're craving something a little heavy, but still catchy. The sax solo on teeth is so cool, really unique. I think you hit the nail on the head with your review, describes my feelings towards it perfectly
thanks for the comment! :-)

cage the elephant are one of my favourite bands and this album is probably one of my favorites by them. its kickass.
Hypocrite is a classic.
Where are all these comments coming from saying he's a hater? There just opinions and he was generally positive throughout the review. Except saying he didn't like some of their earlier stuff, which is an opinion he has the right to have, he wasn't negative at all. In the end I think this is a solid review of a great album.
I do like this album but I disagree with ur statement before I love there other albums too

It’s so weird seeing the melon give an 8 while wearing the red flannel.
as much as I love CTE and I wanna be mad at the negative comments, the dudes making sense. the things he's saying aren't wrong.
+Andrew Lee He gave the album an 8.... thats like an A in Fantano's book
Nathan Haak I’m presuming the OP is referring to his opinions on their previous releases. Could be wrong, however!
haven't been any psych, sludge, drone albums that have caught my ear enough to review 'em. sorry. i'm not trying to endlessly follow one, two, or three singles genres until the day i die. i'm just going where my ears take me. if i dig a sound, i follow it. some sounds grow dull for me, some sounds grow interesting. that's it.
I have to disagree with you on their previous 2 albums. Yes, each album they've released has been schizophrenic and all over the place, but there were some great songs to come out from both of them, such as Aberdeen, Drones in the Valley and of course, Shake Me Down. However, I am loving this new LP, I think it's a refreshing listen, much more enjoyable than many other rock albums that have just been released. 8/10 for me. Great review as well, Anthony! Keep up the good work!
I think they’re all rather interesting lyrics. It’s not excessively unclear, great beat, doesn’t try to come off egotistical or arrogant. It’s just cage the elephant. I love it
honestly, i'm not huge into autechre's afterbirth EPs. they always drop a handful of tracks that are just ok that are still in the vain of their previous LP.
Ok
Ok@@erickh6587
...I agree that I love melophobia, but I'm shocked that I found someone who didn't like Aberdeen, Right Before My Eyes, In One Ear, Back Against the Wall, and Ain't No Rest since that's pretty much the most popular songs from the past to albums
I'm also surprised that he wasn't a fan of Matt's vocals in the previous album, and yet he's okay with Teeth XD
Thank You Happy Birthday is amazing. I am surprised you didn’t enjoy it
This is an all time favorite of mine. Their first two albums are good and I fucked with them HEAVILY in middle school, but god damn they snapped on this one. A personal 10 for me. There are zero weak tracks. I think that there is a fair argument for any track on this album being the best. Though they have their highlights, wish Tell Me I’m Pretty and Social Cues were better. Melophobia comparatively just feels raw and authentic.
It’s Just a Forever Is a fucking masterpiece. It doesn’t only feature Alison Mosshart (which is in The Kills and The Dead Weather) but the structure is chaotic and completely different from anything I’ve ever heard. It has a very catchy hook while also staying interesting and musically challenging. At the end, it has a run down piano melody which makes it sound even more interesting. I love this album. I’m glad it got an 8 m8
This album was such a pleasant surprise to me as well. I loved hearing all the influences of bands/styles I love put into a neat, catchy, vibey package.
so he disses CTE for unoriginality but praises bands like The Hives and The Vines? (both pretty repetitive and derivative, but enjoyable, bands). Double standards much?
He gave the album an 8/10, stop bitching
Arian hmn wasn't really complaining about the score so......
Well, at least The Hives and The Vines had a really defined sound that when you listen to them, you know it's them. With Cage The Elephant, they didn't really have that until this album and even this album is a little unfocused. You're ignorant if you don't admit that Cage The Elephant, on their first 2 albums, jumped from style to style to style. Just listen to "Indy Kidz" and "Shake Me Down" back-to-back and try and tell me that isn't unfocused.
Joe Proulx I don't really see why you need a "distinctive style". The Hives' two most successful songs are pretty much the same track released twice. It's not a law to have an album which all sounds the same, it's totally legal to just play whatever you fancy.
George Unitt I understand that, but there has to be a common thread linking the tracks together for it to be an album to sound cohesive. And this Cage The Elephant record is the bands best job of doing that (mostly because of the production being consistent and also the song writing). I love it when bands take other genres and sounds and put it into their music, but only if it's done tastefully and isn't just ripping off another bands style.
Just listened to the album last week and it very much felt like a cross between Generationals and The Black Keys, weirdly. It's a great album and I love it! And, I agree that I just didn't like their earlier stuff, especially their self-titled album.
I love all the album's of Cage the Elephant. Their "Cage The Elephant" album was great and I really liked Come a little closer in Melophobia. I put into a trance by that song when I first heard it, it was so great.
Their first self title album is one of my favorites from this band. Could listen to it from beginning. and have, hundreds of times.
I get that their other albums don't really have a consistent sound but I still love them. Also, I love this album more than LIFE
i do?
Black Widow is Blue Orchid by the White Stripes. It's the same song...I really do like this LP, but I feel there are times where it gets too carried away with its influences, and my goodness, I don't know if it was on this album or one of their previous albums, but another track I could swear with the chorus I was listening to The Beatles' I wanna hold your hand.
If they continue to come out with the sound I like so much that I see as their own, I could easily be able to enjoy Cage the Elephant even more than I do now.
Yeah, this album. You're thinking of 'Take It or Leave It', and yeah the beginning of its chorus definitely sounds like the Beatles.
I'm a huge White Stripes fan and I didn't even notice, but it's glaringly obvious now that you pointed it out! Still love this album though.
just droppin by to say HELL YES THIS ALBUM IS RIGHTEOUS. wasn't a fan of this band really, but if they continue this direction i'll be ecstatic. thanks for reviewing anthony! do you feel that slight smith westerns vibe in here? just a thought
one of the most underrated bands out there fs
Honestly I love Cage the Elephant's variation of sounds throughout the albums. Their contrast between a softer and harder rock sound is very nice. They have two real distinguishable sounds I hear and I love them both.
I would have to say a mix of Blues Rock, Grunge Rock, and Garage Rock is *the band people look for.*
And some of their songs are very simple with greater meanings.
the good old days back before red flannels were negative
This is the most negative looking thumbnail for a very positive review
The thing I like best about Cage the Elephant is their ability to change. I think they take their various influences and put their own little twist to it. I see it more as a nod to the artists that they look up to. Great review though.
even though i totally agree with you on their lyrics being cheesy, i have to say i really like this band. and they are one of the few modern bands that are getting better with age. actually now that i think about it, their first album is pretty dumb haha
Wow; your review was spot on to me! I was definitely pleasantly surprised and far more impressed with this album than Cage The Elephant's previous albums too. I think you should also review Grouplove's album Spreading Rumors.
Cigarette daydreams, come a little closer, and halo are certified bangers
This album is so special to me a decade later, it is sonically and lyrically moving in a way I cannot explain
This is one of the more confusing appearances of the red flannel
I know you probably don't read all of these comments, but I was wondering if you've ever listened to their first project, Perfect Confusion. It was a band a few of the members were a part of in high school and a little after. If you listen to it you can hear their original sound which would give you a clearer understanding of where they came from (southern rock/blues) which you said you were kind of confused by on their first couple of albums. I do agree that this is their best album though. It strikes me as sounding a little bit like the Arctic Monkeys first two albums (and original mixtape, Beneath the Boardwalk) mixed with kind of a Dr. Dog feel. Anyways, I just found your channel and it's a breath of fresh air. To hear someone review who has a clear production background is awesome. Keep it up!
I like you. I can definitely see where you come from on all your opinions, you're pretty much like me if I wasn't so afraid to criticize. I have to say something, though: on a channel dedicated to music, I recommend that you add a little background music, preferably from the album's and songs you're discussing. Add that detail, and I'd be hooked.
He used to add music a long time ago but, you know, copyright
You know those old comments you wrote a long time ago that now sound like a pretentious manifesto? This is one of those for me.
Ah we can all relate
There have been some really impressive releases in 2013, this being one.
I'd review:
'The Blackest Beautiful' - .Letlive
or
'Lift Your Existence' - Night Verses
(please do this one if you have time, it's pretty damn good - and also check their little 5 track EP too)
I'm really surprised Night Verses Album hasn't got more publicity. The album is incredible, the songs ooze a wistfulness and intense passion.
On a side note: Melophobia solid 8/10 verging on 9. I agree with the majority of what you've said, because I definitely agree that Cage did originally almost fall into that 'similar-to-the-masses' strand of Alt-rock bands. I began listening to them before I'd heard any other vaguely similar variant band, so I've got a fondness for them having followed them and seen them evolve, but I do admit I may have ended up following another alt-rock variant if I had heard that variant first; that's the way it is sometimes. Generally I work on the premise 'Do my ears like the sound?'/ 'Does it sound good to me?' and I think 'Thank you happy birthday' and 'Melophobia' have branched off into this obscure new-rock sound the really do appeal to my ear-holes. They take from many influences and lay down their own creative soul into one musical smash which I really do enjoy; I'm sure i'm a little biased.
Like you're reviews boss, keep at it, and do check out the Night Verses album!
Hope you read this :),
My regards,
Everytime you put that "Neu!" LP behind you I burst with joy that other people know how awesome this recording is.
Thank you happy birthday is definitely something that takes a bit of time to grow on you. When I first heard it I really couldn't listen to it at all, but i kept trying to listen to it and everytime i did i grew to love it a little more.
I know he didn’t have the red/yellow flannel system back then, but god damn that thumbnail is big clickbait
not sure yet.
I love Thank You, Happy Birthday. It's just an album that everyone can love.
Yep better of the three IMO
Yeah. I've been falling back in love with it in recent weeks, more specifically Japanese Buffalo
I sooo fell in love with this album. Amazing! I'm kind of in a lo-fi rock mode right now so this was perfect.
The Hives and The Vines. Yessss
cage the elephant is one of my favorite bands so my opinion's a bit biased. but I think melophobia is an incredibly strong album. beginning to end. in my kinda sorta humble opinion, melophobia is one of the best records of 2013.
*red flannel*
*8/10*

I can't believe it took him this long to review Fear of Music by Talking Heads, step up your game bro
Cage the elephant are fucking awesome and this album was just as good as I was hoping for so well done to them for that ( my own opinion )

I was pleasantly surprised with this album as well, I was so sick of hearing "Ain't No Rest For the Wicked" and thought they would never go beyond that level in they're music but they did good here.
Also, could you please review some my chemical romance albums?
I'm not sure if you're joking or not..
I actually enjoy My Chemical Romance. They are my favorite band.
I know they broke up, but I can still enjoy it.
@@big_danger I'm not even a MCR fan, but jokes on you. Antknee has said numerous times that he plans to talk about The Black Parade as a classic review in the future.
After watching this, I figured that a lot of CTE's early output WAS weak, despite the rising tracks from the end of self titled and a majority of thank you, happy birthday, and melaphobia showed scent of a style, love this band since the day I heard them.
matt's vocals are prime
i don't agree, CTE is one of my favs, but i like the way that you explained your opinion :)
We gonna get this new album?
hope so
You obviously don't understand them or their lyrics if you call them cheesy. They gave me such a fresh and new perspective on what good music really is. Although I do agree this album is not their best, their past two albums are amazing. I feel they made this one a little more main stream and better looking for pop culture. I think they lost their original hard alternative rock. There's not that grunge that I loved in the past two. But if u still believe that they have cheesy lyrics, I think they wrote "in one ear" just for you. So really listen to those words and tell me what you think.
I felt the same way about their old albums. I cringe at Ain't No Rest for the Wicked. I could See Everlast singing that shit.
I agree with a lot of this, although I enjoy their previous albums but they seem to be a bit of a mess of genres but melophobia sounds like a cohesive album
Not the red flannel :0
Edit: I've been bamboozled
Loved it, favorite songs were Spiderhead, Halo, come a little close, black widow
are you illuminati???
I remember first hearing Take it or Leave it. It's what got me listening to them. I wish, just once, I could forget what the album sounded like, so I could listen to it for the first time all over again.
Their first album is one of my favorite albums period, but I don't really like anything after that. It's not that they're bad, but it's just not my thing. I feel like it lacks their energy from their self-titled, which is what I loved about them.
Oh, watch their live concerts lol.
This was my favorite of theirs. 2 albums later and it's my favorite by a bigger margin.
Please do Spreading Rumours by Grouplove
I have to agree that this and their 2nd LP are their strongest.
what ever happened to people respecting another persons opinion?
Love your descriptions
You should do a vid on run by awolnation
I liked Cage The Elephant's previous releases, but I do agree the lyricism could get corny. This is definitely their best album. And "Teeth" is an insanely awesome track, my favorite on Melophobia. I would give this album a 7.9, for sure.
Look up the reason he wrote ain't no rest for the wicked then watch the video again
Personally I think there is a clear motive in every Cage the Elephant album. The first album : Cage the Elephant this album's main theme is the horrid things people do. For example In One ear covers teenage angst. A song with even stronger connections to the main theme is Aint No Rest for the Wicked this song covers subjects like mugging prostitutes and even robbing all for money. The second album : Thank you happy birthday mainly covers mainstream media censoring , and also depression. A good example of this is in Japanese Buffalo, and Indy kids. First Japanese Buffalo this song covers self harm, and why people do it. Finally lets cover Indy kids, Indy kids has strong connections to the human desire to be the same as everyone else because they believe that its the only way to be accepted by society. The third alum Melophobia similar to the last album cover things like self harm. But it seems to be really about mental illness as a whole. A song that represents this perfectly is Telescope. Telescope is about a man who feel like the world wont ever accept him. This song clearly has a strong ties to depression. Finally the most recent album (not counting unpeeled) Tell me i'm Pretty. This album has a more meek motive then any of the other albums by Cage the Elephant. The main theme of this album is Love and how it can affect you in a negative way. A good example of this is in Sweaty Little Jean this song covers how death of a loved one can be hard and the fallout that it brings. But this is all my opinion.
