I don’t think Zach understands fully. But basically Porter Robinson was in a really dark place after Worlds. He made Nurture not only to save himself but he also wanted to save others. To give them that same motivation and love for life - that got him out of his darkest place. However, because he made this larger than life record that really resonated with people (many fans consider his music life changing) - he felt this massive responsibility to always be that perfect light for people. To be that thing that makes people love living. But he started to resent that projection of himself because he’s not perfect. He struggles with anxiety, anger and sadness. He doesn’t have life figured out despite it seeming that way through his album. Through all this he also started to see the toxic side of fandom where people thought they knew him. Where listeners felt they had a relationship with him because of that shared bond through his music. Because his music really connected with them on that deeper level. Smile is kind of a response to all of that. It’s an album about projecting happiness on the surface while struggling with sadness underneath. It’s about rejecting the notion that he has to be this larger than life positive energy for others - because it’s not his responsibility to be the reason others get out of bed every day - even if that’s something he sometimes wishes he could be. The album isn’t just about the toxic side of fandom tho as Porter also wants to know the beauty we give him as well. That it doesn’t have to be a one sided relationship(in terms of exchange). As a fan who felt Worlds and Nurture were both life changing albums, I think it’s brutally honest of Porter to reveal the pressures that has also put on him. Even though I don’t know him and never will, i definitely just want him to keep making the music he wants to make. Not every album needs to be Nurture.
Kind of ironic for me, as I thought WORLDS was the life changing album. No one had made such a heroic tour-de-force of emotion, merging heavy edm with nu-core and anime esthetics. No project ever had that scope. Then Nurture came out and I was incredibly disappointed. It's almost voyueristically self-indulgent and lacked the fresh beats and synths that put him on the map. I understand the appeal of his current self, but I miss the courage and danger of Virtual Self/Spitfire. Everyone has insecurities and these problems, I don't find art about it interesting. I go to art to experience something different than the mundane, anxiety-riddled world and Porter made a new universe with his old music.
@@masonrockwood7732 I understand your point. 29:00 funny thing is I feel like malls are the closest thing we have nowadays to market centres in towns making them feel like a natural place to meet and interact with people

i relate to the “vision of a mall” stuff so much. I have some incredibly abstract thoughts/hallucinations that have a massive impact on anything creative I do, and I never feel like I can explain what it’s like to other people
wow what a captivating vid to watch. When i was 12 , I heard Porter Robinson BEFORE i ever listened to Skrillex. Say My Name, Less Go Remix, and The Seconds were my first listen. first heard on a online BBC radio broadcast. since then, Ive grown up still listening to Porter and he definitlly represents a generation who was on the internet and still played outside. overtime his music just resonates in a way where really the only word that describes it is: GROWTH. I feel so proud to be alive while hes making music and to this day i still believe his music is a genre i call " Legacy" - music that upon listening , deep down will stand the test of time and be herald as a staple in the evolution of not just electronic music but artistry in general. Dear future me: If you came back to this episode, i hope youre still smiling :) i love you and dont give up.
Wow I learned a lot from this interview. Not only about his album and the process but also about AI. I love how he perceives how AI would help musicians/artist etc in the future. Oh by the way the AI technology to auto translate does exist. Seen some done for bts interviews
Worlds is among my 3 favorites albums of all time, and im schocked how much im obsesseled with Smile despite its serevre difference. I feel my own nostalgia for 2000s artists like the ready set, dashboard confessional, and owl city l, and the extreme music difference while being more-PORTER than ever is absolute MAGIC. I HAVE to see you live in pheonix this october!!
I'll always keep checking back on Porter, but this one largely missed me musically. I still admire it & love a few tracks off of it, but as a whole it doesn't quite land the mark for me. My single expectation with Porter is continuing exploration, and I absolutely love that that's something he said he admires and models after Daft Punk for himself. It's so true and it's what makes coming back always a treat. I'm sure with age I'll like more of it.
Man there was something about this interview that was incredibly frustrating compared to the previous interview (which was great!) - Zach's questions aren't following Porter's line of thought and it really messes with the flow of the interview in that he's trying to circle back to his question. This is really kinda weird because usually Zach follows along and just goes with where the person he's interviewing is leading him. - "What pressure makes you want to be perfect" is straight up JV and I'm honestly kinda shocked that such a mid question was asked. Porter noticed it too, he repeated the question like "How tf am I supposed to answer a question like that." Zach is a really good interviewer and I think that even he wanted to eat those words after he said it. We all make mistakes, and I sure hope that one was realized. - Porter is straight up coming out saying "yeah, you see I can be vulnerable right now and it's only going to make things worse in the way that people think that they really know me when they don't". This is more of a phenomenon of people thinking that virtual representations of people are actually those people. Online friends aren't real friends. Celebrities and musicians and twitch streamers aren't really your friends. It's a hard truth that people have to reconcile with. You can see this a lot in his actions where he gave away clothing recently in LA but had a "no words will be spoken" rule. That's twofold! Number one, practically, no words could be spoken otherwise everyone in line would be there for ages. Number two, breaking that fan/persona barrier only leads to heartbreak for both! Again, hard truths. The frustration that I mentioned earlier with all of this is that Porter waxes and wanes on the tension between "the barrier" and "nostalgia". He's talking about nostalgia in other interviews and how nostalgia is intoxicating on a mental perspective and how anyone seeking to revisit something instantly realizes that it's never the same. He wants to provide nostalgia for his fans, but knows that in doing so he's going to ruin it. He talks about the barrier in the same way. If anyone were to break the fan/persona barrier you'd become instantly disillusioned at the reality of the person. That's frustrating! Obviously it's not Porter's fault, but just realizing all of this is so difficult to wrap your mind around and to come to terms with. So what do you do? You SMILE.
I've been following Porter for a long time and without fail, I've always found him not only to be relatable, but easily resonated with. I'm grateful to see pieces of his soul on display in every interview he's in and I'm happy (just from one human to another) that he can share his experiences with us in such a beautiful form. I love gathering more pieces of Porter to adore the complex puzzle he's grown into. 😊🥰
On the topic of always reinventing, I think the best thing for fans of previous albums who want an artist to go back to that style would be to seek out other works that influenced or were influenced by that "era" of that artist. There are so many works that I found because they were similar to Virtual Self, because there's so much music in the world that I've just never heard before. Man, imagine having a chance to listen to MCR for the first time at this point in one's life. What an opportunity.
Porter mentions that he feels like he’s running from himself a lot But I personally feel like, although we obviously don’t know him personally, it feels like with every album he’s running towards himself more and more. The level of vulnerability in SMILE! shows an authenticity that is really rare You can feel him getting to know himself when you listen to his songs. It’s like a symphony of his personal journey, and to be able to feel that through his music is a testament to how much of himself and puts into his art. It’s an honor to be able to witness even a fraction of how profound that journey is. God I love art
Coming back to this, I was super interested to here the discussion about AI. As an artist I have mostly negative feelings towards it, but I also see a little glimpse of something in some AI art that I feel could be special. That’s all setting the ethics aside of course, because I don’t know if I’m even comfortable with using AI considering how it’s made.
Grateful for the interview but man it's frustrating to see him ask a question, have Porter answer it, and then have Zach follow up with a question about something that Porter JUST addressed. It's like he's not listening or something

I can't believe I'm actually getting this parasocial but it feels like I love this man more and more for every interview I listen to. The part at the end where Porter talked about if the audience felt the same way as him hit so hard. I've been a fan since worlds and I was skeptical about smile but when it dropped I was hooked. It was no doubt still Porter, through and through. I love this album!
Been a diehard fan since Worlds and I fw smile :D sooo hard. Listening to this interview has me like swimming in this new era and I'm so excited for the live show!
Hi Zach! I'm currently taking a class in college that studies American Sign Language and deaf culture and we were asked to reach out to a creator/entity that could potentially strengthen the ways that deaf people can thrive in traditional culture. I think it'd be awesome if you included a sign language interpretor on one of your episodes to not only allow deaf people who sign enjoy your show, but it'd also show so much support for a marginalized group of people who struggle to feel included in society. Thanks so much, love your show.
Oh my god. He finally made it click for me. "There's so many great fundamental things that I've skipped because it felt like homework." I've always felt that way about so many things, and I could never quite put my finger on how to describe it. But it really feels like homework sometimes, and I'll just skip it.
It rules how the musical heart of the album comes from Porter learning and embracing guitar music for the first time. His perspective on tackling indie pop from the perspective of an electronic producer reminds me of Grimes motivation behind writing/producing her 4th album, Art Angels. Funny enough that album too speaks on rejecting the image that critics/fans have built around your music (see California). Was dope to hear Porter got a chance to talk with Grimes and share his love for her intelligence and process. She definitely gets way too much hate as her unfiltered freedom of expression is perfect for being taken out of context and mocked. Awesome interview.
Re: gen ai. He's definitely coming at it from a stance of optimism and a bit of naive privilege. Yeah, it'd be great to exist in a utopia where AI allows us to never work and instead put ourselves fully into living and experiencing life to the fullest... but we live in a corporate hellscape. He totally misses the important context that AI systems are bankrolled by people with a distinct interest in disenfranchising the worker. If you don't think the endgame of AI is removing a workforce to increase profits and personal take home for the above the line money men then you gave been tricked. The utopia for AI CEOs is a tool trained on the back of people they pay too little wages to and (or people they don't pay at all) to remove them from the equation monetarily. I love Porter more than any artist on earth, he's been my favourite artist for the last 10 years, but he is a part of the problem. There are real actual humans that could have been hired to make fanart (or hell, just license fanart from tumblr) and used the money he paid them to make rent, buy groceries, go to the doctor, invest in their artistic skills to open them up to an actual full time artistic career. Using AI invalidates such a chance to bring your audience into the process (on an album that is a psuedo love letter to your audience) which would have elevated the message more. I love you porter, but your opinion on AI art definitely reeks of someone who has made it and maybe forgot the hellscape that is trying to hack it in a creative field. I'm sure some ipad kid will find some way to use AI in an interesting way, but not because AI allowed it, but because the kid figured out a neat use. End of the day, AI is a corporate tool that will eventually be used to replace the little guys like me, not someone like you who has a platform already. It's already taking jobs from people in commercial animation and video games, my industry, and I've full out just stopped sharing art online since I don't have any interest in training the beast that is designed to kill me. I love you man, I know you read these comments. Please dig deeper.
Can't agree more. Looking at the actual credits for the MV, he obviously has the resources to actually hire artists and I really hope he realizes this isn't a hill worth defending
I totally agree, AI has no ethical use in art- straight up. Corporations aim to replace people with it because they don’t want to pay human beings. I think his empathy towards AI possibilities is misplaced, and it really bothered me when he said he used AI in the MV and I was like????? It really made me feel confused since he’s an artist too, though a musician, shouldn’t he also comprehend how disenfranchising it is? Like, this isn’t an exciting future or something, it’s being used to replace people…
1:16:32 its interesting because i feel like porter made precisely a song about an AI (po-uta) having this “soul” and talking about its experience, and imagining that is something really beautiful as well

56:14 facts! Before this algorithm crap, you had many smalll, pretty tight knit communities, you felt like you belonged somewhere. Now it's pure chaos and connecting everything via an algorithm ironically made everyone feel more disconnected than ever before.
I started messing with Suno last month.. I just want to have fun while I learn to translate poems to music.. but I am worried about stepping on toes of real artists. I hope more people have these conversations so it is easier to know what ethical use looks like. 😭 I’m so glad I found this
Not me and Porter sharing similar dreams, I have this recurring dream of a giant mall (similarly to a mall in Vegas but bigger and more grand in high tech) SPECIFICALLY IN JAPAN. In this recurring dream, it's also pleasant for me. I'm on vacation in Japan and it's night time and the night life is so bright and full of lights, and we go to this HUGE skyscraper of a mall. Porter... are you there in those dreams too?
it's so funny that the mall dream is something i also draw on in my art, my version is me floating 100m below the surface of the ocean breathing underwater
It was a shock for them to go from "people need to work" straight into admitting to using AI art in the music video. I don't think Porter's stance is malicious, and I think his idea that it allows artists to express themselves in formats they aren't skilled in is valid, but he is absolutely in a financial position where he could have easily commissioned fanart. My personal opinion is that AI is a neat tool, but in its current state it is incredibly unethical to use in commercial products. Even though the music video is free to watch, it's advertising a product that is not free and the art that AI was trained on was likely used without permission.

This makes me way more stoked to see him in Vegas this october.
porter looks very cute ♡(◕ᗜ◕✿)
Lol I wish my hair looked as good as his
Waiting Porter to master a saxophone!
Omg a fellow mall enjoyer
32:50 BRO 😭
Oh my god. He finally made it click for me. "There's so many great fundamental things that I've skipped because it felt like homework."
I've always felt that way about so many things, and I could never quite put my finger on how to describe it. But it really feels like homework sometimes, and I'll just skip it.
:)) what an amazing interview
dude I want to love someone the way porter loves rika 😭
CAROLINE POLACHEK MENTIONED
I FUCKING KNEW ID SEE YOU HERE AFTER HEARING HER NAME HAHAHAHAHA
@@gurgleguy LOLLLL
54:14 yo wait that's the actual sample wtf 😂😂😂
Love him 💖
30:26 OMG SINGAPORE MENTIONED ❗️❗️❗️🇸🇬 🤯
I was waiting for this!!
I love every part behind Porter's art, I really admire the detail and feeling behind his sound and quality, great master work. 🤍🤍
This was awesome to listen to. Y'all always have such great things to talk about
LETS GO
Like, this isn’t an exciting future or something, it’s being used to replace people…
Stellar interview!
alright buddy

“Hearing rock music for the first time was like opening the portal to God for me” that’s how I feel listening to Virtual Self 👀
did you BECOME god tho?
absolutely grateful for this but jesus the interviewer just doesn't care AT ALL 😭
The mall in the sky is like Porter Robinsons avatar state.
I definitely miss the globe times, but I'm still trying to SMILE.
I love Porter Robinson
Me too❤
i loved every minute of this
that dubstep snare he just did was divine
29:59 yes, it's Coruscant.
1:16:32 its interesting because i feel like porter made precisely a song about an AI (po-uta) having this “soul” and talking about its experience, and imagining that is something really beautiful as well
Having a backup passport is crazy
Porter + Music = Reinvention
Leaks aren't eating raw pork from the chef, its eating the cookie dough before the cookies are baked. Not as good but man its still yummy and gets me excited for the cookies re: 1:20:00
Porter Robinson would love Death Stranding
Amazing watch.
26:24 the moment he realized he made a pun… too funny
porter has logical viewpoints
The “mall in the sky” is what I’m missing… 😆😅
Wait till Porter Robinson discovers American Football
The AI cake analogy is so good wtf
He's so handsome ❤
my chemical robinson is so funny because porter somehow nails the modern gerard way look so hard it's not even funny, i grew up listening to MCR and Porter and this is like jolly ranchers (a cavity maker) to me
56:14 facts!
WOO
it's so funny that the mall dream is something i also draw on in my art, my version is me floating 100m below the surface of the ocean breathing underwater
41:59 i was literally just running over npcs in a monster truck in GTA when they said this💀
