      Greg hasn’t been seen in days. By tracing his credit card charges at gas stations we can se he has been making his way toward Germany for a blast on the autobahn.
      Seriously, I’m totally stoked. It’s like the car I always dreamed it should be after seeing the BMW Guy Ritchie movie-ads when the car was new.
      I wrote a song for OJ as well.

    • @GarryMcGovern
      @GarryMcGovern 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Having not noticed that he only had 200 horses for the last 3 years, I doubt he actually drove it any differently AFTER the tune either: how could you not notice your M5 was pumping out less power than a Golf GTi?

    • @johnbcardin
      @johnbcardin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Orfan Productions when you look at the torque pre tune it was around 260-280 in the 2000-3000 range which was not terribly far from the tube torque in that range. If he was using it as a cruiser/weekend car it probably didn’t feel off in that lower rpm range which probably masked the problem.
      I was really hoping we would get his initial impressions too.

    • @GarryMcGovern
      @GarryMcGovern 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnbcardin Are you seriously trying to make excuses for this? That in 3 years of ownership - cruiser/weekend car or not - he never once accelerated past 2/3000 rpm? Yeah, ok man, you're right: it actually is totally understandable that he had no idea his car was 40% down on power the whole time.

    No word of a lie, my M5 had an Alpha N tune already but it generally was sluggish and very lacklustre to drive, even after fitting a 3.62 rear end. However once I'd done the IAT relocate mod and disconnected the MAFs, it genuinely started to come alive. It was improved for sure, but at the back of my mind, I thought maybe the cam sensors needed changing or something. But then today I wanted to replace my steering wheel, so I inadvertently reset the adaptations by disconnecting the battery. When I went for a drive in the evening, holy moly it really was a spectacular night and day difference. First gear is a blur and second gear gives me such a shove back in the seat that it brings a huge grin to my face. I wouldn't be surprised if my M5 showed similar gains on the dyno like this car here too.

    I've had two E39 M5 and both had dirty MAF's. To check the status of the engine power output you can use the service menu in the instrument cluster (google it). Find the real time liter/hour measurement. At full throttle in 3rd gear (or whatever gear) at max rpm it should consume about 160 liters/hour. Mine did 100 liters/hour. I cleaned the MAF's and it was restored to 160l/h and surely felt quicker.

    Same sort of thing with the Land Rover Td5 in that the MAF will go bad but not throw a MIL, plug in a Nanacom Evolution or similar and it’ll throw a MAF value low error in the log but otherwise there’s no outward sign on the dash to indicate failure. Disconnecting the MAF will lead to a small increase in power but prevents the overboost function working correctly. The Nanocom at least will show you the air flow values and with 2 out of the 3 in the fleet showing zero it was time to replace a few MAF!

    Maybe this is dated info, but, with this being a Chicago area car where large temp swings occur, isn’t Alpha-N going to cause running issues as the temp scale swings? I thought Alpha-N was really for predictable whether conditions (and altitude) and had to be adjusted for variances. Great for race cars because you are setting it for race day conditions. So, even if this is a three season car, you can see a lot of variance in the Midwest. I am just a couple hours from Chicago myself so I know what it can be like here.

      There are a few cars that you just can’t see past; cars like the W204 C63 and E39 M5. No matter which team you’re running for, those can’t be hated. They stand on their own - no matter a Merc or BMW badge.

    A great video. Should all cars be taken to a tuner such as this to see how they are performing? My 2005 E55 is in the Pacific Northwest so its not going to Fluid Motor Union. :-( How does anyone find a good tuner for these kinds of cars in their local area? Thanks Alex. Always fun watching these.

    What about intake air temp compensation? The S62 uses air temp input from one of the MAFs.

      In the part 2 video we explain that we removed the pins from the MAF portion but left the pins for the intake temp sensor. That way it still reads the intake temps.

      @@FluidMotorUnion why don’t you just replace the maf’s with new ones?

    Great Video! I know you say this can be done with other cars. However I keep hearing that my E46 M3 will only do what it's gonna do unless bolt on mods are done (for the most part). I'd love to find out this is not so.

    That's cool. That's also why I don't trust stock mystified ecu's. A standalone can run whatever sensors you want, no hard to find parts needed. But then it won't be "original" anymore. Oh boy what a loss. Anyway, the real issue would be something else, as far as I understood OJ said the car runs in sensorless mode. What if he went to a wildly different elevation? He'd not only lose power, but either run too rich/lean which could be bad for the engine. It didn't seem to be correcting much from the 02 sensors as he had to make a few runs and correct the afr's manually.

    Dyno Dynamics dynos are by far 1 of the best eddy current dynos in the world. Not to mention they are made in Australia which like Motec and other Aussie Products is light years ahead of many other products - IMHO ;-)
