Feeling shitty about life? Thinking you suck at what you like to do? Listen to what Steve Vai has to say and I guarantee you'll feel a lot better and more confident. Dudes fucking legendary.
I attended Vai Academy 3.0 last Jan. 17' and, I had a week of this very experience. I loved it so much!! A weeks worth with Steve was priceless, and if I had a $ for every time the word "listen" was used all week long.
I think EVERY person who trolls on here and is judgmental about guitar players, who's better, who's faster, who's more heavier, or even cooler, etc. should listen to the section at 16:19 and on, you'll hear some GREAT respect that Vai offers. Truth. I have immense respect for Steve and he always has great insights, not just a great guitar player, but a really nice person as well.
I always have that critical voice in my head that says I'm not good enough. It keeps me from chasing my dreams. I know better, but I can't seem to set it aside.
I love Steve Vai and i like listening to him talking guitar, but i gotta say, how on earth can he not mention Eddie Van Halen as a major influence... i'll never know. And how often does this thing happen with lots of other guitar players of his generation, who basically started playing when Eddie changed the game with his first album! It's something i really can't explain. Anyway, thanks Steve, you're so inspiring.
sidhanth gupta the RPS strings are the best I've ever played. Cobalt wear down your frets very quickly and I can't speak for d'addario cause I'm an avid Ernie guy.
He haven't a mention of Eddie van Halen. he took almost everything to him. what's the problem steve? to mention to Evh ?? is the most influential guitarist in the guitar world music, after jimi hendrix, page, blackmore, etc.
I came in just because I was wondering how "Vai" is pronounced... Never got much into Steve Vai´s music because I had the impression he was super duper arrogant... however, listening for a few minutes... dayum!!! This guy is super humble, super cool... Really got a big bad impression.
I love Steve- but can this guy quit going back to Zappa?!?! Let's hear about the future- we all know where Steve came from. The interviewer (Sterling?) didn't even know Steve studied with with Satch, I mean come on! Do your homework before you interview.
I'm glad the interviewer gets the importance of the Zappa period. Whatever else he does will be great, but there is almost no chance he will ever work with someone that will have 1/10th the impact on him musically as Zappa. Frank would be by far the most interesting topic of Steve's musical life, and of almost anyone fortunate enough and talented enough to have worked with him.
Always admire Vai's humbleness. Everybody knows how good he is, but he never flaunt. True artist!
+Binesh Maharjan thats called being validated. and is secure
steve is sometimes humble and others not so much, after all, is a human being.
I understand exactly what you are talking about. I feel the same way. He has the "Perfect Musician Attitude".
You know there's a Vai guitar which paint contains some of his blood right? 😀 They sold many
A musician in the purest sense of the word.
I can listen to Steve talk for hours. Had the chance to do a meet and greet in DC back in 2012. Story of light tour. The guy is a genuine class act.
Genius & humility personified. Vai is the man.
Feeling shitty about life? Thinking you suck at what you like to do? Listen to what Steve Vai has to say and I guarantee you'll feel a lot better and more confident. Dudes fucking legendary.
A true legend . ...nuff said.
Not nuff said, don't be a lazy fuck. Go on.
Steve Vai's mastery on the guitar is only matched by his enormous heart and humbleness. What an example!
Thats the difference between a musician and an artist. These two guys totally get IT.
what..?...
+Φιλιππος artist
Steve Vai is such an incredible guitar player !he's humbly great !

Greatness with wit and being humble. He is a true great.
Every Steve Vai interview is gold. That last part is specially inspiring.
success is consequences of a passion - Steve Vai-
That was the most motivational speech I've ever heard.

Such a great guy
Aaaaaah he said Brian May, I never knew he was on Steves list. But then again Brian is somewhere on most guitarists list.
incredible!
I always have that critical voice in my head that says I'm not good enough. It keeps me from chasing my dreams. I know better, but I can't seem to set it aside.

A vat of humble knowledge. Awesome interview thank you.
So much of Eckhart Tolle in his speaking.
The truth has been spoken. Steve is a very very wise man!
A Phenomenonal Musician and a Great Human Being 👍👍
18:12 I have heard many interviews of steve vai and I think this is the greatest lesson of all
Steve is such a good dude. Excellence in philosophy.
Great Guitarist. Humble Man. Horrible Glasses.
lol....
I like the glasses.
He's eccentric, but he isn't a asshole about it. He must have learned some of that from Frank.
+Robert Baratheon yup
haha, he has grandma glasses
wow. guys good. cant deny
Rock'n'Roll psych: Steve Vai. He's so wonderful.
Legend!
Ah ha! I was there!

Who is the interviewer Sterling? I'd like to look him up on YT to hear his music.
Sterling Ball is the CEO of Ernie Ball Music Man, and the son of Ernie Ball.
Many thanks.
3:57 There's no flutes in Aqualung.

Never Wash Your Hand Again.
Kristian Du Vall
oups ;)))
Satriani and vai never mention early van haven as an influence! Can you imagine them developing they're style without listening to Eddie?
+AJ Reynolds I don't think either of them have had the same impact as early van Halen! Technique isn't everything and where's the music?
Van Halen - Fair Warning
Thank me later.
which strings does john petrucci and vai uses ? I'm confused shall I use daddario nyxl strings or Ernie ball rps , slinky or cobalt or m steel.
sidhanth gupta the RPS strings are the best I've ever played. Cobalt wear down your frets very quickly and I can't speak for d'addario cause I'm an avid Ernie guy.
Thanks
Стиви Вай -- классный! Дядя Стив, когда Вы приедете в Россию, в Санкт-Птетебург? :)
5:13-6:55 is literally the exact same way I started getting into playing.
His glasses are very 'Dame Edna' haha.
I love Steve Vai and Lana Del Rey and Baby Metal
cool
Why don't he release albums on a regular basis ?
James Evans I don't mind waiting for an album as long as it's good. Like this comment
Would like to see vai endorse music man.
I like seeing Steve talking about other guitar players. Ok they may almost all be Ernie Ball artists but hey......
I liked when the camera zoomed in on his hands, we get it he's italian 😂😂
@18:00 I want to learn from this man as much as possible.
"that you can´t" comes usually from your parents...Trust your heart.

sterling ball
Thanks
Who is the interviewer?
+Enrique Fernández M. Sterling Ball :)
18:16 pure gold
He haven't a mention of Eddie van Halen. he took almost everything to him.
what's the problem steve? to mention to Evh ?? is the most influential guitarist in the guitar world music, after jimi hendrix, page, blackmore, etc.
ofcourse again not mentioning Eddie Van Halen. Then one guy he took almost everything from..show some respect Vai. You naughty boy!! -:)
He probably has a guitar that matches his glasses, cause that's how he rolls
I came in just because I was wondering how "Vai" is pronounced... Never got much into Steve Vai´s music because I had the impression he was super duper arrogant... however, listening for a few minutes... dayum!!! This guy is super humble, super cool... Really got a big bad impression.
... Adding him to Spotify.
So.. you judge the music for the personality of the artist? You should check that man.
worgegramsci105 Well, I like his music and his personality makes it even better for me!
RIP FZ.
Sick frames
No drugs, faithful to his spouse for 30 years, this is the result.
I disagree... The Guitar's not Hard, however playing it the way YOU do, is...
