while I agree how a comedian structures their joke can affect how the audience perceive it, it is not Bobby Lee's problem that people are bothered by it. perception is relative. just because a comedian sets up a joke in a certain way that makes you uncomfortable doesn't mean it's a "guilty confession", you're just projecting at that point. the entire purpose of dark humor is to shock and offend. not everyone's cup of tea.

  • @adabsurdum5905

The reason Bobbys story was offensive and Toms wasnt is that Tom was actually telling a joke. Bobbys story may not be true, but it was not structured in any way like a joke.

If it looks like a confession, sounds like a confession and nothing is inherently comical about it, it must be a funny Bobby Lee joke and was purely fictitious.

@@idolhand6468 hmm well generally if someone does shock comedy whatever is more shocking….
in this case the more extreme exaggeration (the girls age, the gang with a machete that couldn’t catch bobby, possibly the whole story) doesn’t make the joke funnier but more concerning, with no punch line other than possibly “oh look at me I was raped everyday for a summer” type humour. Because the joke isn’t at the expense of himself the relief isn’t there just prolonged anxiety.
Thanks for saying that anyone who understands this has used child prostitution.
To lock someone up for making a terrible joke is crazy compared to locking them away for actually committing a awful act. If there really is a family/gang/cartel out for Bobby’s throat because of child rape I doubt they would ever stop. With no woman raising their voice how are we supposed to arrest the man for a story he’s told no one else? I agree to call him out and investigate if need be.

I love Bobby Lee and I am a big fan of bad friends. Not so much of tiger belly so a lot of it probably comes from his relationship with Andrew. The problem here is there is no punch line. Ricky Gervais is a great example of shock jokes but it's the build up and punch line that makes Gervais a master of uncomfortable jokes. What Bobby is doing is effectively just telling an uncomfortable story to hear. That's the difference in understanding comedy and shock comedy in my opinion

The punch lines I've noticed and enjoyed are subversions of expectations, in brackets: "She looked like Natalie Portman (A beautiful woman)" -> "In Leon the Professional (A cute child)"; "She was crying so I did what any good man would do (stop having sex, comfort her instead)" -> "I powerfucked her".
I didn't like the set-up, it felt a bit fumbly and rushed, and the second part was less about the joke and more about showing that it WAS a joke, which I didn't like much either, and I think "So I hurried up" would've been plenty of subversion instead of "powerfucking", but there's definitely punch lines.

The problem with Bobby Lee is that he has told these stories as a part of his origin. He also has said so many times he was molested by someone with down syndrome which he also has now said is a lie. The thing is tho he says this stuff mixed in with stories of his abusive unloving Dad during moments that were not even remotely funny. When Theo says is obviously made up stories about his past and the characters in it they are inherintly funny but Bobby seems to be looking for sympathy. Also it gets really confusing bc people started listeng to podcasts partially to know their favorite entertainers on a deeper level maybe so when you are telling fake stories that aren't funny and are very plausible it is really hard to discern the truth. Yeah that’s what’s a huge difference with Bobby Lee. He started his career as a trans comedian on MTV:Mad TV where one of his best characters was a lady, Ms. Swan, so he was already “edgy” playing both sex characters on a pretty good viewed show and took off with the LGBTQ+ community and continued to mess with gay jokes or being on tv playing a lady character. Continues to mess around with gay jokes and go deep into sex jokes and podcast not that funny listening to him talk about being raped while being a kid and Andrew making fun of him for saying he has sucked dicks before and continue to lean into that and feel like a victim and never say, even with his brother on the show, the truth and these are all jokes not serious but too late with this kind of comedy “cancel culture” being soft about jokes so his constantly telling these stories as jokes never comes out to say I’m just joking. And make a serious apology to move on.

"Comedy" isn't a get out of jail free card that leaves you immune from criticism, and people calling you out for poor joke-telling isn't cancel culture. The issue isn't the topic but how he told it. Tom was poking fun at the awkwardness of being naked in front of your child because a child is fickle and because of how people reflexively react to the concept. Burr was making fun of the reductiveness of unproductive, shallow DV talks and intrusive thoughts. Bobby was poking fun at... some underaged girl who didn't want to be forced into prostitution, was crying from how traumatic it was, and him wanting to go back for seconds...
We all know jokes aren't always jokes. People joke about their experiences, things they believe, or to indicate morals. That doesn't mean Bobby was serious but it does mean how he chose to tell the joke (and the setting) left room for doubt, hence the flack.

The Natalie Portman stuff is way worse given that we know
    1. She was a child actor, made to shoot scenes that her parents specially vetoed, by a director who waited until her parents weren't on set to shoot them.
    2. The plotline in that movie was inspired by Besson's relationship with Maïwenn Le Besco, whom he started dating when she was 15, and who he'd impregnated when she was 16.
    3. Besson was credibly accused of rape.
Also there is video footage out there of Lee very obviously sexually assaulting TV hosts on multiple occasions, which he seems to think is also a "joke".
I don't think the Tinjuana story is a factual true story, but i do this Bobby Lee told it because doesn't think it would be a serious matter if it were true.
I think a comedian can attempt to be or appear "brutally honest" as part of their schtick, but they can't put the genie back in the bottle if people form an opinion of them based on that.
He of course should be allowed to continue with his comedy, and people are free to form an opinion of him based on his actions and words.

Great video, man. You really do a good job of analyzing the whole thing rationally. I feel you glossed over the last point too quickly, though. It's not *what* Bobby said; it's the context within which he said it that's the problem. He told the 'joke' as if it's a real story that happened to him. It's great that you figured out he was joking, but I didn't. And many others didn't, either. We genuinely thought he was sharing a story. And I think it's unfair to blame the audience for not getting it, when he told it as if it's real. Even the albino bit -- it seemed real. Now, I didn't get offended and angry -- so I'm not calling for Bobby Lee to be cancelled. But he did f*ck up. And he needs to own it. (Which he has, so it's all good as far as I'm concerned. Like I said: Great video. I just felt that this was a point worth making.)

    @Turd_Ferguson1 ปีที่แล้ว +23

First of, this channel is fucking great. I got recommended one of your videos a few days ago and pretty quickly I ran through everything you've put out. Great job overall.
I think Patrice O'Neal said it best, "funny jokes and unfunny jokes come from the same birth. A comedian doesn't know if something is gonna be funny to an audience until he tries it."
Comedians should have an immunity from the audience to say the wildest shit imaginable to attempt to make us laugh.
I think that podcasts have muddied the waters though. One thing is a guy on stage trying to be funny and then a guy on a podcast trying to be funny. On the stage everyone kind of assumes this is not all true, this guy is just trying to make people laugh.
The reason podcasts with comedians especially became so big in the past 10 years is because people enjoyed listening to them have genuine conversations, not just performing up on a stage, telling jokes or made up stories.
The problem with Bobby Lee and a lot of other comedians is that they try to "perform" on podcasts at the same time as having real conversations. At that point their jokes start to get viewed with the same critical lens as their real views and beliefs.
I'm not saying it's right but it's just how it is. The things a comedian says when he's on stage will never be viewed and judged the same way as the things he says off stage.
I think Bobby's story is true, I don't think he made it up. I've heard multiple versions of up over the years and if I had to guess I would bet that it's a real story. He told the story and he wasn't proud of it. But now society has changed and they came for his head so instead of owning it and saying he wasn't proud, he decided the only option he had was to try to use the shield of comedy. Whether it worked for him I don't know.
The other thing, i'm the farthest thing from an sjw but jokes like Segura's where you're talking about kids I just find disgusting and not funny at all. It definitely will make me not like a comedian. I think that talking about kids like that is perfectly fine to be the place where we draw the line.

You claim that people should automatically assume these stories are fake but how are people to distinguish when comedians often tell true stories? I’ve been able to verify stories that Segura has told so it’s not always fiction & the stories are always told as if they actually happened. It’s just as easy to call the comedians or people like you “snowflakes” for taking offense at people taking offense at something that was designed to be offensive.

I think you're incorrect about Bobby. I think that that story was real. Maybe she wasn't 12. Maybe she was 15 16 but you don't tell that type of story. It wasn't a joke when he told it to Theo Von. He actually said don't put this on the show because it might get him in trouble!

He told it multiple times because he thought it was edgy and it would get views. I agree, I think it was real. There's just too many specific details.
And the place he mentioned, called Adelitas is a real place and the price of $60 was confirmed by I think Ari Shafir on other podcasts. I can't remember who else but that scene of comedians talked about going there on multiple occasions.

Ari Shaffir is the absolute last person you would want to believe about something like that. He's one of those:
      "It's just a prank, Broooo!"
Kind of guys. It's how he acted when he drugged Burt Kreischer, when Burt would be in front of his children all day. That includes the incredibly flippant attitude he had when Kobe Bryant & Kobe's daughter died, but since Ari is a Hornets fan, he *immediately* Tweeted out some super f×cked shit that wasn't even funny, even if that day had alternatively turned out to have been nothing more newsworthy, but a regular Tuesday.
And there's always more, with Ari. He's a funny comedian, but he's so obsessed with being some super fkn edgelord, tryhard, that he would almost guaranteed throw Bobby under the bus with that story. Just for the f×ck of it, since he would be amused by the Karens.

Bro got a hooker in Mexico so what? Even if it is real and even if she was a minor, he wasn’t intending on getting a minor and you can get a hooker here in the US. Is paying a woman for sex wrong? The only reason it’s wrong according to the government is because they cannot tax it. Let that sink in.

With bobby lee, the thing that gets me is the explaining and justifying his actions within the joke, to me it's too real.
Whether the actions pertaining to that joke actually happened or not, it sounds too real to be funny. There was no understanding of shock humour present within the joke. "the floor was sticky" "she was really tight" "This story could ruin my career" "I feel so bad saying this story" "why you smiling dude... that's fucking rude bro" "do you get to keep the towel? No, you don't want to keep it, there's stains all over it"
All those little add-ins and quick replies make the story either so incredibly well thought out, or lived through. And to me it's past the point of shock or dark humour. It sounds closer to a guilty confession, and when it's in the forum of a podcast or radio station, where there isn't a crowd laughing and where people know everything your saying is 100% made up and a joke, it blurs the line even more, and when there's no hard line drawn between reality and fiction whilst saying the joke, (especially when it's a lengthy joke) it becomes even harder to distinguish between the two.
The fact of the matter is that it was probably a joke. Could be real for sure, and we will never know 100%. BUT the comedian is saying it's a joke, so therefore it's a joke.
I am not a snow flake, my friends and I get drunk and say abhorrently vile jokes to each other and I believe any comic should be allowed to say whatever they want in a comedic sense, in a comedic space. But for me the joke had way too many real elements said in a perspective that was trying to make us believe it was real without the comedic relief before, during and/or after. It worked with the "down syndrome joke" because he came off as either courageous and dedicated to his craft for telling us a traumatic experience he went through and making it funny, or a wild man saying wild things.
Look this joke isn't for me, I know somewhere out there, there were people laughing there heads off at this joke, and that's fine. But it's hard for me to suspend my disbelief when he grasps onto reality so tight, and for me that's where the problem is.
If you read down to here, thanks for reading my yap.

An English comedian did an amazing bit (lasted a long time) about him texting a lass and it's kind of the same thing, but because it was on a stage show and not a podcast it was more believed that it was a joke.
Telling it on a podcast is a bit different, people tell n0ncy jokes. Look at Gervais, 2 amazing (by far the best 2 in a terrible special ) jokes about that kind of thing.
But he never said he tapped them
Oh and the English comedian was Frank skinner and it was brilliant... Although I hope it's not true lol

Whether the story is true or not, merely to tell a story about having sex with a weeping 12 year old for “entertainment value” is profane. Whether he did it or not that is in the WORST taste.
Is it me or have comedians gotten a little too grimey?

    • @RR-on4sk

Agreed. Like how are people missing why that's an issue... What's funny about a little girl crying during something like that? Where's the joke supposed to be? It's kind of ridiculous these comedians always have an out too with "it's a joke" even when there's no joke. If he told a story about committing a hate crime decades ago, where it's all "I totally burned a ❌ in a black gay person's yard one time" no one would be so eager to defend that. Defense for these kinds of "jokes" always happen when it's against females. I swear. When it's a female, even a prepubescent one, it's ok because it's a comedian. It's horrid.

He got thrown out of the state of Iowa for vulgarity because that's how little he cared about laughs. He was going to say what he wanted whether you thought it was funny or not. 100%
