Dreamworld - Lyrics
The Breakfast Creek Hotel is up for sale
The last square mile of terra firma gavelled in the mail
So farewell to the Norfolk Island pines
No amount of make believe can help this heart of mine
End - your dreamworld is just about to end
Fall - your dreamworld is just about to fall
Your dreamworld will fall
So shut that buckle and turn that key again
Take me to a place they say the dreaming never ends
Open wide drive that mystery road
Walk through Eden's garden and then wander as you go
End - your dreamworld is just about to end
Fall - your dreamworld is just about to fall
Your dreamworld will fall
Sign says honeymoon to rent
Cloudland into dreamland turns
The sun comes up and we all learn
Those wheels must turn

In 1988 I finished an MS in environmental science was convinced I would change the world. The morning of my first job interview, I recall watching this video. 22 years later and beaten down by the realities of making a living and supporting a family, I listen to this with a more balanced perspective but sadness at having lost that idealism. At 50, I am recommitted to embracing the environmental cause I once thought I would champion but fell far short of.
Your story is my story. BS in environmental science 1999. Thought I would save the world. I bought album because of this song
@@Nayaez11 , Peter Garret , while an Australian Govt Minister , caused many young men to die who installed insulation " Pink Batts " into the rooves of houses . All due to ill thought out energy policies which he introduced in haste. Peter was an egocentric Politician , with a " let them eat cake " attitude while wearing a Green Halo . He never apologised or showed condolensces to the Parents of young men who died. And when the govt subsidies for Pink Batts finished , thousands of tons of this dangerous pollutant were dumped as land fill. One thing is certain , Peter Carrot spent more time thinking about his set lists , than he ever did about Pink Batt installation
Crocodile tears.
Welcome to the club, brother, but I started in 75 and didn't make a fucking dent!
Good on ya!
this monster rocker of a song rips as much today as it did 30 years ago! god I miss the 80s
Deep song..... these guys were always ahead of their time.
Absolutely raw, Aussie power! What a song and what a band. They don't make them like this anymore.
✨🖤✨
I'm raising three little Norfolk Island pines in my house in Texas. I take them out for short summer visits then back inside. They are my babies!
I was in high school when I bought this tape. The messages sung about are still true to this day.
Deep song..... these guys were always ahead of their time.
Not so much ahead of their time, more like they took the first step.
And listening to their songs during COVID-19, really hits home!
They fought for someone, they championed a cause. In a way, became heroes. AND, we didn't see these heroes "fall". Besides that...I enjoy their music, passion, energy... They ROCK! ! !
Midnight Oil always knew how to write songs that had catchy tunes and good messages. Dreamworld is one of their best.
Mark Taylor Yep. And almost prophetic.
Dreamworld # 1 King of the Mtn # 2 {{in my opinion}}!
Love their music; The Dead Heart is my personal favorite
Mark Taylor they are a great band and always will be.
It is
I recently started listening to the Midnight Oil a couple of years ago, and this song is by far my favorite. My interpretation of the song is that it is a solemn statement about how those nostalgic times and places we grew up loving and enjoying will eventually change over time, and will inevitably come to an end one day for one reason or another as time progresses. "Your dreamworld" is such an appropriate set of lyrics because it applies to anyone's specific magical dream-like time or place in there life that was so meaningful to them. It is a constant reminder and warning to not only appreciate that you were able to experience those times and places in their prime, but to also enjoy what you still currently have, because one day it will only be a memory.
🤔You're right.
Well said. I'm 65 and can't help getting misty over places I took for granted in my youth.
@@doubtfulecstasy4220 Same here.
Another mall in my neck of the woods where I hung out frequently in the past has since closed down for good.
Sad to see such go.
Not that the interpretation is wrong, but the song specifies places in Queensland where there's been massive development. The Breakfast Creek Hotel (worth a visit) is a historically protected property. Dreamworld is an actual place on the Queensland Gold Coast, a huge amusement park.
Learned so much about Australia (and a bit about the US) simply researching their lyrics. E.g. "Hercules" is about the Lockheed Hercules C130 purchased by the Oz government (and used by the US military)
Specifically, the Breakfast Creek Hotel wasn't heritage listed when the song was released in '87 and was at risk of being sold off and torn down for apartments. The Cloudland dance hall had this exact fate befall it, demolished literally overnight in cooperation with the corrupt state government of Queensland.
This song is an explicitly political one about rampant corruption and development in Queensland in the late 80s.
Our Dreamworld is just about to fall 2021
Here in Argentina "carpinchos" do not know where to live because they have constructed fantastic rich houses named Nordelta in the bio habitat place where they use to live, longtime ago this place was called carpincho's Island AND ALL THIS IS BECAUSE WE HAVE DOUBLE WORLD'S POPULATION in the last 50 years ! so STOP HAVING BABIES FOR A WHILE PLEASE !
It already has in my opinion. The world is not the same anymore. Jesus Christ is nearing the time of wrapping it all up and starting it all again where the people who believe in him will have eternal life in paradise where there will be no more pain, hatred, fear or suffering .
"The Great Reset" or as I say, unfortunately, "It's the Great Culling."
@@humanityrising9378 uh ! so true ! poor the kids being born on these days
@@cabdll I agree, along with Santa Claus and Easter bunnies
This is one of the greatest phocking songs ever written!!!
It's remarkable to hear this song 20+ years after it came out and realise how startlingly accurate it ended up being, and how little of a shit anybody probably gave at the time.
and how much we give a shit now!
They had more than a clue from the inception. Back to work at Blue Sky now. Last square mile.
what Jared said....
What a hypocrite , Peter Garret the lead singer in Midnight Oil joined the Green Party which he abandoned for The Labor Party & ended up in the Federal Government of Australia as Minister for the Environment . He was completely incompetant and his actions in the " Pink Batt fiasco " killed many young men which he never apologised, plus resulted in other disasters imposed upon the people of Australia. He did more harm than good . He was all talk but no action.
Sondra Dupree You really have it out for PG don’t you, He warned multiple people in the government about dangers with the insulation being used, and then when it still happened he did apologise, Garret wasn’t a great politician but he’s better than Abbot, Turnbull and Scomo
I am from Portugal,50 years and i always tried to know and learn with the most bands as posible...i listen midnight oíl since the 80s and i think they were genius...DreamWorld IS one of their BEST songs, and what a song...❤❤❤❤
Powerful And Prophetic
.
One of the Greatest Songs Ever Made It Gives Me The Chills All Over Every Time I Hear it
Amen
Midnight Oil are national treasures and eerily their songs are just as relevant in 2019. The Oils are timeless and as an earlier commenter said up there with U2. We played US Forces at my brother’s funeral....it still makes me cry 30 years afterwards.
Never more relevant than now mate. This band echoed so many times and voices. What a band in such a time...🎵🎸
Way better than U2
this monster rocker of a song rips as much today as it did 30 years ago! god I miss the 80s
Heck yeah Julie Benson it does. One of my all time favorites. Never gets' old!
Julie Benson its true
Really not a fan of the 80s at all (i grew up then, thank you), but Midnight was one bright spot. They really (and still do) spoke to me about simply being aware that there's a world around us more important than money.
Timeless and brilliant. My fave band since i was 12 and I'm 50 next month! Playing Hercules in rpt lately... omg the passion is undeniable.
darin zeoli
I agree mate. Overall, I think the 80s was not a great decade for music.I am Australian, so obviously biased, but I think for a short time in the 1980s Australia was producing the world's best rock bands -Midnight Oil, INXS, Angels, Cold Chisel etc...
And the Oilers keep it going. An epic song that few listen to.
the greatest protest band of all time..and they smoked live..they rocked.
They still do.
They still do!
Are you stupid? Have you ever heard of Rage Against the Machine? Thatsa real protest band What about The Sex Pistols? Midnight Oil never made it in the USA because they suck
Agreed, this guys lived it. Especially Garrett.
@@chrisromano3388 maybe they didn’t make it in the US cause of a particular song…
Midnight oil is my favourite band to listen when I’m going 12 hours drives to get my foot checked in hospital in Adelaide, australia
It's definitely an "aussie" story 👍💪💯
I LOVE AUSTRALIA..... ANOTHER TOP OZZIE BAND...... AUSTRALIA AND IT'S PEOPLE, CULTURE AND SPORT ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD OZZIES ROCK
the singer is such a powerful force of presence like no other..
Bruce Dickinson - Iron Maiden
He almost became a Senator in Oz. I met Peter back in 1991 and he's listed at 6'4" but I'm that height and he has 2" on me. He later became Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts and then Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth
Garrett is like a force of nature. Saw the Oils live a few times, and his passion just swept you up. I remember a show at the Greek Theater where he had me singing Power And The Passion at the top of my lungs... and I never did that at concerts.
One of my all-time fave bands.
Diesel and Dust great album, love Midnight Oil. 🇦🇺👍
Great guitar chord progressions!
Great song, as any other by Midnight Oil! This band is absolutely amazing! Much respect and all the best to this fantastic rock group from a great fan from Romania! Hats off!
This is a masterpiece of emotion
What a monster of a frontman Peter Garrett was too. Maybe I'm too romantic but there are not bands like this anymore.
yep, gets by purely on charisma. just a weird looking lanky bald guy. how many people could pull off what he's achieved?!
Nobody these days would be able to write such a song. Nobody.
@@julosx They write them. We just don't listen anymore, we want pre-packaged pop stars.
Or ever for that matter.
totaly right
It's like you are driving down the South coast New South Wales Australia.. awesome.
My favourite Oil's song.
'Take me to a place they say the dreaming never end's.'
A great band. I'm always surprised at even though they were a big band they should have been even bigger. One of a kind.
This really hits home, mainly because they were right. Our dreamworld is coming to an end, and the Australia I loved when I was growing up has gone forever. :'(
I agree, Jim Farrawell.
20 years too late.
Oh rubbish
Australians should of had more pride in themselves. Sadly they were stricken with the curse of White Guilt. Guilt for building such a great place that they feel the need to tear it down themselves.
The biggest detriment to a western country does not come from the outside, but from the inside by the people who's ancestors built it.
The same could be said for my native USA.
What a Power House of a song! It's probably my favorite Oils song though there's one I only remember a partial musical & lyrics bit and yet to find it on YT.
Anyway here in NYC I got to see them 3 xs '80s & '90s !
The melody with such a haunting brace of guitar music & sonic's! Really everything vocals, bass & drums.
I actually sing it as "Their Dreamworld is just about to fall" and "dedicate" it to RW's in our USA. Hoping it will happen.
I rank them w my other super favorites: The Who, U2, Springsteen, Patti Smith Group & Midnight Oil.
Have several of their cassettes. What's great is though I had give up my cassettes etc when I hear the songs here on YT that I pick out; I remember most of the ones I know!
ETA - There's Warakuna, Truganini, Stars of Warbuton, Diesel & Dust etc! 👍🧡
RIP Bonesy...and thank you for the great tunes brother.
this monster rocker of a song rips as much today as it did 30 years ago! god I miss the 80s
One of the Greatest Songs Ever Made It Gives Me The Chills All Over Every Time I Hear it
the greatest protest band of all time..and they smoked live..they rocked.
those were the days when we were as free as the birds, sleep under the stars without worrying about the authorities clamping thier iron fists down our throats, fish wherever we wanted and just drove anywhere and everywhere, today big brother applies the big squeeze, no longer are we free to fly with the winds or to sing with the trees... our dream of utopia , safety and freedom diminishing with each successive government.
This is Australia's greatest band and they are on an equal to U2..This Band is epic and they should be damn proud..
Spurious association. U2 are to cock rock as the Oils are to punk rock.
As a jazz fan, I agree this band is special and their obvious quest for socail justice is commendable. I reckon they are arguably the best Rock team under the sun, not just in Australia.
AC/DC fans incoming.. lol
U2 aspire to have half the class of the oils.
They better than U2
What a rush with this jam! I’m fired up!! Pulls all the emotional cords!!
One off their best and was a great live band
the singer is such a powerful force of presence like no other..
Deep song..... these guys were always ahead of their time.
This song never gets old. Very appropriate song for the times we are living in 2021. More to come.
Probably my fave vid of alltime....always loved the environmental theme....
Love the energy and melodies of these gents
I've been listening to OIl since I was a teenager in the early 80s, my love for their music has only grown since then. Seeing them recently live, I finally checked that off my bucket list. I'm SO thankful for that, because I waited TOO TOO long to do that.
I am a big fan of Midnight Oil and I listen to them on my MP3 almost everyday. I love their music and love the message they send here and all the other songs!
I really am perplexed why Oil didn’t produce more like D & D and be more popular.
One of the greatest bands of all.
I'm so glad my dad brought me up to listen to apsolutly bangin artists 🔥👌🏼
Great song, glad I got to seen them in Toronto on the final tour
My favourite oils song of all time.Love the film clip, and the dancing to.Peter Garrett predicted what was going to happen, a long time ago.He is a genius.
In my opinion their best song. One of many great songs but the opening shot of Stanwell Park beach near Wollongong clinches it. 🎶🎸🎤🥁👍
Masterpiece Midnight Oil ! ❤
Babylon fall, world ends, Dreamworld comes. Great songs Midnight oil never run out
No se retiren chicos, los fans los necesitamos. Tienen para más, son lo máximo!!!! 👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My god that guitar playing is so beautiful.
This song is the Oils - summer and Australia all in one - a bloody masterpiece - and a tasty riff - RIP Bones...🎸
So raw and powerful!
Dreamworld is a large theme park situated on the Gold Coast in Queensland. It is currently Australia's largest theme park with over 27 rides including 4 roller coasters. To create it a large section of forest was destroyed. It includes an artificial beach with a wave machine....right on the beach. Midnight Oil wrote this song in protest. You can see billboard ad in the video. The song and video came out in 1987 on Diesel and Dust, not 1997.
Has it burnt to the ground, yet?
@@GertrudePerkins no but it shut that will do
Blame it all on corrupt and awful politicians, shame on them!!! Happens in Australia, happens everywhere.
Nicely stated...
There is always more to their songs that just about a theme park.
Toataly complete global legends! Thank you guys for your conscientious contribution to the world in which we occupy🙏
Very appropriate for moments like this here and now.
These lyrics have power. Think about all the places and spaces that were once important to our identity and folklore that have disappeared or been lost to 'modernity'...
Really think about it...
Then think about how that compares to the Aboriginals' experience.
BAM! Hits you like a brick.
well put
frightening eternal unbridled brilliance ... more appropriate now than ever ... future "gaveled in the mail" .......................
I always loved their sound. I still do.
This is the legacy tune for Midnight Oil! This is the song that states what the band is all about!
Your young...NEVER give up
Bones Hillman created the most beautiful and creative bass lines I've ever heard, thanks man RIP
Love Midnight Oil
I love this song because>> "faaAAaaall" and "eeEEeeend". It's gorgeous.
They’re a hundred years ahead of themselves
the greatest protest band of all time..and they smoked live..they rocked.
Time spent with someone means the lot
O som eu ja conhecia a muito tempo, mas o clipe nao!!! Show!
I love this song. It gets me so amped up for life!! I’m about to become a dad for the first time and I’m so excited for it.
Great song. We must stop paving the world!
Intent , guitar🎸 vocals, guitar 🎸.
lived there in the 80s, love you, dreamworld~
all of their music holds up to date. If it came out now you would dig it because its timeless . Truly on of the best bands ever.
Best dam song I ever heard.
So awesome! Every time!!
A melhor banda australiana
not sure what this means but thumbs up mate!!!!
@@mikem.2688 the best Australian band
The song was so revolutionary, and the video back in the MTV days. Watching a paradise go to hell. So powerful.
Allan Ostermann I know this is Australia, but the same thing has happened on Oahu, Hawaii where I lived in the mid 80's as a teenager. It was a paradise and only downtown was crowded with touristy stuff. Now, the whole fucking Island is full of goddam resorts and malls and its overpopulated with high rises on the Leeward (Western side) of the Island and it looks like shit. My Paradise has gone to fucking hell... Here in Texas, its less fucked up than Hawaii and that's a shocker!
DR. HOUSE M.D. I don't know about that last part...
+DR. HOUSE M.D.
Greedy sellouts want the west to suck up the predicted 9B non whites that will be arriving over the next 20 years
I seriously believe that perhaps the Germans should have won WW2.
Heydrich
+Allan Ostermann Ain't it the truth. Have watched my once "rural" town become nothing more than strip malls, parking lots & crappy big box stores. When you enter the "historic town" you are greeted by fast food garbage lining the streets, creek & plastic shopping bags hanging from every tree...............UGH!
+JamesColton1847 deeeeeep
I live on the Texas, U.S. Gulf Coast and our dreamworld is already long gone. Hotels and other businesses destroyed a once pristine surf and wildlife spot! I surfed it in the 80's and it was great. I also lived on Oahu, Hawaii, U.S. in the 80's and went back recently and its as fucked up now as the east coast of Australia. Probably worse! My uncle lives in Queensland and said they are now encroaching almost as far north 300 miles north of Brisbane. He lives 200 miles south of Cape York in Far North Queensland the last unspoilt paradise on earth. If that falls, then there is no hope for humanity or the natural world. I shed a tear for the flora and fauna and native peoples fucked up by commercialism.
Same thing here in Perth, Western Australia! Relentless population growth and relentless push by developers to build ridiculous high rise apartments right near the pristine beaches up and down, despite the people wanting the coastline clear of monstrosities like you see in places like Gold Coast and Miami.
The French Riviera is another example of ober-urbanism and millions of tons of concrete at insane price. I can tell as a Frenchman myself, ikr.
it's sad
I never seen the ocean until I was 19...Just a country gal from Kentucky...back then ..years later I saw Pawley's Island South Carolina....I enjoyed watching surfers ...I am not a strong swimmer..so I knew better then trying walking out to far...Not to many surfers ,but I enjoyed seeing them...Oh I loved it ...I miss the beach...I can walk through the woods and not get lost no tree looks the same to me....the city not so much... I freak out.....ugh..
My ex husband tried to take me to Myrtle Beach....way to much for me..I like things simple ..
Such bittersweet rage.
The Power of Aussie Rock!🤘🏻😛🎸🇦🇺
God, I miss them.
I was fortunate to see them twice at small venues. The first being at The Fillmore in SF. They opened with “Dreamworld” and the place went BONKERS. I have NEVER been to a show where the crowd lost it and the ground was shaking.
Rock bom é antigo tem melodia e flui bem em meus ouvidos.
Melhor banda de rock ativista no momento surf na veia
They are probably the best band in the world!
Sensational bass, drums and guitar work as well as great lyrics. This song could'nt be more appropriate at this moment.
Uma das minhas musicas favoritas! Banda foda pacaralho!
Midnight oil the best!!!!!
no one can write em like Midnight Oil !
A fantastic song go the Oils.
What a cool band.
what a song!!
Earth over any second is my worry!!!
Couldn't stop humming this song to myself today so I had to listen to it again, song for the times?

Saw them live Wellington NZ 1988. Joe Walsh as support. One of the best concerts I ever saw. Xxx
This song makes me so happy! So beautiful!
I remember when I was in junior high school and this song came out. Always liked the message.
Hot Water Music does a really solid cover of this. Much more gruff and raw, but still just as brilliant and passionate.
Just another all time classic of the 80's and such an impacting song. Please listen to the words. Mahalo.
Just heard this for the first time on XM 1st wave. good track!
Thank you
