When the finalists of the club 8's would put up better competition, you know the Grand was weak this year...
What were Brookes supposed to do otherwise? Another club could have stepped up to race them but didn't because they knew they would get beaten, Brookes beat the crew that turned up on the day. A weak year or low entries isn't a reason to cancel the event.

Aye, I don't really get the other complaints here.
Yes. Due to the pandemic the usual higher class entries weren't submitted, but the grand challenge cup is historically an open senior men's 8 event to all eligible clubs. Anyone can go for it though normally not just anyone can actually qualify. Just because it's recognised as the international 8 racing event that doesn't change the fact that it is explicitly available to all.
I'd argue that it'd be against the spirit of the event for the organisers to turn around and say 'actually, you're not good enough to compete even though there are places available'. Props to Taurus+Tyrian for stepping up. (And props to Brookes for a fantastic year)

@@snickerz8856 because the Grand is a competition for *elite* eights. Brookes is an elite eight but a schoolboy crew could have beaten Taurus BC, they should never have been allowed to enter as they are not competing at an elite standard.
Would u rather have seen brookes do a time trial then?
@@henrycox7523 no, as I said, in my opinion the Grand should not have gone ahead. It is for *elite* eights. If only one *elite* eight enters, if feel the onus is on the regatta to uphold the integrity of the race, not just allow a crew to win by essentially rowing over. I may be completely wrong, just my opinion.
@@BR0SE1DON you are in fact wrong, if only one crew enters a race then they will race on a sunday by themselves, the other crew entered purely to make it more interesting to watch
