  • The Carl Saunders Sextet, recorded live May 25, 2019, at the LA Jazz Institute "Best From The West" concert series, at the Westin, Los Angeles Airport.
    Carl Saunders, trumpet and flugelhorn
    Jerry Pinter, tenor saxophone
Ido Meshulam, trombone and bass trumpet
    Christian Jacob, piano
    Dave Stone, bass
    Steve Schaeffer, drums
What a pleasant surprise to "discover" trombonist Ido Meshulam. Carl has always surrounded himself with exceptional players, and Ido continues that tradition. Truly a remarkable musician.
I'll be uploading more soon--including Bill Holman, Johnny Mandel, Gordon Goodwin, Mike Barone, Scott Whitfield, Tom Kubis, Bob Florence, Rob McConnell, Bernie Dresel, Chris Walden. These things take time . . . :)

RIP Carl , he’s in heaven playing duets with Don Fagerquiest . One of the greatest of all trumpet players !! Very much underrated . He will be missed dearly!!!

Thanks Mike for this series of videos from Best From the West. Found them by looking for Phil Norman ... I got to play some of his Tentet arrangements recently.

Great sound! Not familiar with Ido-wow! Cristian is one of my favorite piano players and I have his cd's. Whole group sounds great and it comes at a time that we need some joy in our lives. thanks Carl.

Ido is totally amazing. I hove been lucky to trade solos with him on some gigs. You don't "compete" or try and match wits with the guy, you try to find some niche he has not explored and riff off his genius provide your own "voice". It's hard, because his mastery of the trombone is absolute. R.I.P. to Carl. I used to love it when he was sitting behind me, because he had interesting things to say under his breath. LOL. He will be seriously MISSED.

Carl sounds wonderful! So melodic, oodles of great language (lots of Don Fagerquist and KD), and what a sweet sound and effortless approach to the trumpet from top to bottom of the horn!

He's playing a Bach 10 1/2C mouthpiece, which was Jack Sheldon's size also. Both had great tone. It proves you don't need a large mouthpiece to sound good.
