So 5 years after uploading this thing I get a copyright strike for the music in the first 30 seconds, blocking the video in most countries. So unfortunately I had to replace the beginning song with a stock one in the TH-cam editor. The TH-cam editor is really shitty and I could barely cut it smoothly, so sorry about the new rough intro. But at least the video should be available again!

I remember collecting televisions for melee weapons and, with a conga line of monsters following me as I jogged down the street, all I could do was laugh hysterically as I envisioned a man jogging with pants laden with TVs as meandered, unconcerned, with unsightly horrors tagging along. Like, "Hey, man, stop running, Days of Our Lives is on, we gotta see if Stephano is alive again."
I just... It was absurd. Utterly ridiculous.

I hated this Silent Hill game, to me this is the worst game not Homecoming. I never even finished this game because the combat was so difficult and controls were clunky. The story wasn't even interesting and didn't fit a psychological horror Silent Hill game

I agree with all of your points, but I want to point something out about your comment on the sexy nurses having no point in the game because the game has nothing to do with women.
It is VERY heavily hinted that Travis sexualized and hates women deep down in Origins, and is caught with a split personality that forged from the abuse by his mother. One of the most common places you enter into the Otherworld is through Bathroom Mirrors, and notice it's always, ALWAYS the women's restroom he enters the Otherworld through. The same goes for a changing room in the theater. Notice how the Butcher has half of his face normalized, and the other half like a monster, and we see him ripping the stomach downward on a nurse disemboweling it (and taking out every part of it related to pregnancy). In the bad ending in Origins, we hear women screaming for mercy as Travis switches to presumingly his other persona. Travis talks about having blackouts, and his mom treats him like a depraved 'bad' person. Hell, even the mirrors and the whole idea behind duality. There's a lot more, but a bad split personality forged in Travis from years of abuse and the death of his father, who ended up murdering women due to an inner hatred for them which stems from his mother singling him out as being 'bad' because he was a boy and she always treated him like he was filthy and evil, and him viewing his mother as what drove his dad to kill himself.
The thing is while this is hardly the most shocking twist done in the series history, Origins almost plays this element TOO subtly that most won't notice it. Hell I almost didn't notice it until my second playthrough years later and realizing a lot of the imagery was depicting duality quite strongly, hatred of women, what his mother says and his relationship with his parents, the bad ending, etc. But I thought it was worth mentioning (though the actual sexy nurses from SH2 is just being lazy and wanting to use something iconic, yadda yadda, I agree).
On a completely different note, I've been watching through your videos, and I find you have very similar thoughts and do great breakdowns of those thoughts on games that's quite interesting to listen too, and we have some very similar interests. Look forward to watching more videos from you.

but why are the nurses in silent hill 3?

    • @AestheticGamer
      @AestheticGamer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +296

+Dr. Zoidberg The nurses in Silent Hill 3 are not the Sexy nurses, they look like the infected nurses in Silent Hill 1, which is reflective of it being part of Alessa's subconscious because she was kept in a hospital bed, burnt alive and unable to move or function on her own for years, Lisa was her primary nurse, but they took on a monstrous identity in her persona and inflicted pain on her, which is why the Nurses in SH1/SH3 wield more typical weapons like guns in SH3. Infliction.

Two main reasons, the first being that mental health is a strong theme in Silent Hill Origins. Travis was checked in for periods of time after the death of his father because he stayed with his hanging corpse for hours, which wasn't "healthy son, you knew it wasn't." The guy on the radio at the start refers to Travis being that one "crazy son of a bitch," and we learn that Travis has had some mental check-ups over the years. His mother also in some records did some messed up visits to hospitals to torture him and drive the evil out of him, both religiously and medically. Travis also went to go check on his mother after she was ultimately locked up for her own mental health and delusions of religion, and while Travis did visit her he hated her and this place.
Though the third reason is because nurses are iconic to Silent Hill and the Origins creators wanted to use them, yes.

@farenheit041 that's totally NOT origins backstory whatsoever, you might be looking to criticize Homecoming for that matter, it fits way better with the soldier runaround.
And yes, you may be right on "Monsters were created because he was suffering, not because he was horny" but his comment made specifically clear that the story is not about hornyness, is about suppressed or repressed sexuality, which is also suffering. Motherhood sexuality as well, pretty Freud shit right there.

10:04 - 10:06 I know the game's direction + game's music/background score would have made this moment terrifying but, without them, seeing one reflection of Travis going SFLKFMLSKFMLFS on one end while the other reflection of Travis stays stock still is great.

In my personal opinion I enjoyed this game very much and it was pretty scary to me. Yes, you have tons of weapons, you have energy drinks to keep running, but as a new game I didn't know what to expect so I was playing in a safe mood saving ammo, energy drinks, etc, till the very end. I liked the mirrors alternate dimensions, it was original for me, and the extra exploration these dimensions created did not bothered me at all (sanitarium included) and enjoyed them pretty much. And for the nurses explanation, what did you expected from a solitary trucker? Even at the intro of the game a friend tells Travis that he need to find a girlfriend, I read somewhere that this was the explanation for the nurses and for the monster you find at the motel. I know, the hammer space - trucker jacket is absurd, but in the end, it is a game and I don't have any problem with the game getting away with this. I enjoy the story, the father plot twist was heartbreaking, and as a personal opinion I can recommend this game to all my friends even with it's flaws.

The thing I love about Silent Hill is that although the map looks ginormous you only actually explore about 8% of it and all the other doors are locked so thank goodness they didn't waste any space with that nonsense because I would hate to walk into every single room find nothing and walk back out. All in all I'd say this is faithful to the idea Silent Hill one and two had with the maps but yeah the gameplay and story are their own can of worms but I actually enjoy this as it was the first Silent Hill game I played so maybe it painted my view of it going forward since the actual canon of the first game is different

  • @aoshinn

The guy rescued Alessa INSIDE a house engulfed by flames, a number of factors can contribute to someone in that situation to fall unconscious, like heat, lack of oxygen since fire consumes a lot and there is the smoke too... Check the NY state health department note on that:
"This can cause headaches, reduce alertness, and aggravate a heart condition known as angina. Fine particles are able to travel deeply into the respiratory tract, reaching the lungs. Inhaling fine particles can cause a variety of health effects, including respiratory irritation and shortness of breath, and can worsen medical conditions such as asthma and heart disease. During increased physical exertion, cardiovascular effects can be worsened by exposure to carbon monoxide and particulate matter. Once exposure stops, symptoms from inhaling carbon monoxide or fine particles generally diminish, but may last for a couple of days."

I love your reviews man, but I have a different take on this game. I've first play this game while I was working as a game tester in Montreal. The game was getting a ps2 port and I when I got into the project there is almost no bugs left so I've just got to play the game 8 hours a day for about a week. At that point I had never even heard about Silent Hill. But boy, what a blast that was. As you've mentioned the music of this game is purely amazing. Being a composer myself, I had no idea that games could make such a creative use of music and sound effects. To this day its still one of my favorite game soundtrack ever. For the game itself, I understand that fans of the franchises must have had high expectations, but for me knowing nothing about it, this was a shocking experience. The town, the fog, the alternate word, the weird characters, all of it made it a really special experience for me. Since then I've became a huge Silent Hill fan and played all the games at least one. I agree it's definitely not of the best of the serie, but it's still a pretty good game imo. Yeah so I've just wanted to give my two cents on this. Keep up the good work man, your my favorite gaming channel!

I like Travis and the monster that represent him in this games. Here we have someone who is going to become serial killer sooner or later but somehow a town called Silent Hill decided to gives him a chance to either go past that or becomes what he have been trying to advoid all these times.
The way Travis beat the creature down in this games truely must makes him feel very good to let go all of that weight. But I feel like the more he do it the more his other persona started to get stronger, and could overwhelm him, after he get bored of them and go for the more alived one. If you know what I mean.

Well,at least they TRIED to make something akin to the original franchise *Cough* *Cough* Silent Hill Book Of Memories *Cough* *Cough*
But seriously though, the camera was rarely an issue to me while playing the game,i actually enjoyed the story and the challenges for the other runs, also the whole Stamina thing does actually make sense to me,since it could apply to the element of tension;for example, trying to outrun an enemy and then running out of stamina,as the enemies pursue you (Or the theater boss battle) as for QTEs,i think they're good when fighting enemies that jump on you an it takes like 10-5 seconds fpr them to get off you, that is,without the QTEs,and regarding the stunlock, yeah,it made the game more of a Halloween themed beat-em up than a survival horror game for me,though i won't deny that as my first Silent Hill game,i had fun.
PD:Nice pummeling with a little bit of talking about the game

  • @duanemcclure8324

It did take you back to the town, albeit a different area. I didn't play the handheld version. I played the P.S 2. version and it felt pretty good there. Even with it's shortcomings, I liked the atmosphere. The combat, not so much. I guess I was just hungry to see more of the town. I have to agree with you on the details. Putting something into the game because its 'iconic' is NOT the way to do it. After playing through the first 4, at the time, I was unaware of Team Silent's fate and wasn't educated on the development process. I just wanted to get back to the town! I guess that's what drove me to complete it. If the game was a new franchise, I wouldn't have the expectations. It wouldn't have been that bad on it's own. Trying to live up to Team Silent is a very hard thing to do. Nobody can do it like them!

They fucked up a lot of lore and story in Origins. In fact, with the lore of Silent Hill, Origins shouldn't exist. Silent Hill's nightmares and monsters came to be when Alessa was trapped in her nightmares for seven years. Yet at the beginning of this game, she hasn't even started her nightmares yet. And Alessa's mom didn't start the fire in the house, that was because Alessa was under major stress and her power caused the boiler in the basement to explode.

Advice for anyone looking to collect these games. Origins is much better on the PSP because on the PS2 port that made a lot of areas so difficult to navigate through for items because they made it much darker in contrast. It’s so annoying. Now I have to hunt down a PSP and the game just to better enjoy it.

Honestly if they removed the qte prompts and just made it a powerful grab attack that rather takes a chunk of hp or if you have low health its an insta kill id actually like them more. Add in a system similar to kingdom hearts revenge value where trying to stun lock enemies will cause them to invincibility frame counter grab you it would fix over zealously using melee spamming sense you would just get grabbed and take a big chunk of damage.

Excellent review. I've said it multiple times but I have a strong dislike for the post-Team Silent SH games. They all seem like, as you said, people trying to make what they think a Silent Hill game is rather than just making a Silent Hill game.
0rigins tries too hard to explain what we already know, Homecoming tries too hard to emulate the movie, SHSM gets rid of the combat and only has enemies appear at very specific times, and Downpour was just kind of alright.

I rather like Origins, I know some of the other entries does a better job but Origins is still a fun game to me. Not my fave, but I do enjoy it. I will agree that one lvl is just too long and it was clear when going after the different endings..as for the Butcher, I like the idea but he just wasn't used correctly.
And, he isn't a complete lazy rip off. When you're in the burning house if you look carefully at one of the paintings, you will see a painting of PYRAMID HEAD! So like James, Travis saw a painting of the guy which could very well had why the Butcher looks similar. I'm not saying it is, but it could be.
And, like Roah pointed out (one of the best LPers for these games as he shows everything off, and I mean everything....), the Butcher could have a very good tie in with Travis if you connect the dots. I'll go ahead and explain it, in the game you read about a "killer known as the Butcher" as well as about split personalities.
If you get the bad ending, you see Travis switch back and forth between the Butcher, hinting that those bits of info were meant for him, he "is" the Butcher. Which is a very good theory, it really could work. This game has a lot going for it, but its barely used right.
"There's a difference from a good idea, and making a idea work"
With the 3rd Alessa, I got many bad comments over her but there is a possible reason for her to make sense. Firstly, a lot of fans refuse the idea that the burning that a accident, let me ask one important question on that---if the cult did not intend to burn her, then why did they leave her to burn alive and likely die? That would've worried everything for them, yet everybody ran out of the building to leave their "mother of God" to die in a fire.
Second, we saw Cheryl being created but never the aged Alessa, maybe she was created during that fire but I have a theory. When you see her, after the intro, she's inside the mirror world and is how Travis learns of the 2 worlds. And whenever Travis is in said mirror world, you can see him still in the real world which highly resembles the moment in SH3 when Heather (who even mentions that she always thought it was never her looking back in the mirrors) sees her mirror double killed (and return as Memory Of Alessa?).
This 3rd Alessa is not a plothole, nor comes from nowhere, she is in fact, Alessa's twin from the mirror world who likely came into the real world to help the real Alessa, keep in mind the other world is basically created "by" Alessa herself. Why is it so different in 4? Because that was not Alessa's other world, duh people. DX
And, let me ask, after SH3 why would the other world still exist? Shouldn't it had slowly been removed? My other theory is a simple one, the other world is locked in place by the seals Alessa planted everywhere which were meant to forever seal it and all who is unlucky enough to get pulled in. But she never completed it, so its stuck. Whenever people enters the town the other world, via Alessa's seals maybe, connects to them and brings out all their deepest fears and sins.
Everybody has psychic powers, but most never seem to realize it. So the town is simply attaching to anybody it can because there is nothing else it can do, after SH3 the only thing left the series can do with the cult is to have somebody try and rebuild it, other than that---there's nothing more other than random people facing their demons, but so many fans simply refuse this and reject everything different.

The problem with Origins is that it's trying to be both 1 and 2 at the same time.
1 was about the Cult. Harry is a simple character given little development.
2 was about James. The cult was irrelevant.
3 was about Heather and how she's intricately tied to the Cult.

There was also the oversight of a few things, like how the trauma and abuse regarding Travis' mother trying to kill him with poison gas, his father hanging himself, and the possibility he could be suffering from a split personality (hence the supposed black outs he seems to experience), not to mention the radio chatter in the intro between Travis and a fellow trucker hinting at a rather lonely lifestyle, deprived of any supposed sexual thrills, kind of hint how things like the nurses and the butcher could make more sense.
The nurses, because they could easily be just what the image of a model from one of those pin-up magazines (probably something expected of a trucker, that has to travel long distances, with little free time in-between), would look like, being filtered through Silent Hill's otherworld.
The butcher on the other hand, may as well be what the image of Pyramid Head would look like, if filtered through a lens of violent tendencies and unrelenting cruelty, which possibly hints at something Travis has desperately been trying to lock away, with the bad ending implying he could've been responsible for murdering several women that reminded him of her mother (which is why the monsters the butcher ends up gutting, seemingly without being provoked or going out of its way to do so, are related to women or sexual intercourse, like the nurse or the "two-back" monster).

I really enjoyed the return of the UFO ending as it felt right. Those endings have their own mini-canon. In SH1 Harry gets abducted by aliens and at some point in time befriends them. He then returns to take James in a similar way he himself got abducted. Several years later when they were all at Harrys place (James, the Aliens and Harry himself) and learn of Heathers experience Harry decides he had it with this town so he and his alien buddies go to Silent Hill and burn it to the ground. Of course there is no UFO Ending in SH4. according to the UFO canon the town didn't even exist anymore after the end of SH3. A prequel was the only resonable way to bring it back. To bad Homecomming ignored that and brought it back. Without making any sense and it's quite clear that no thought went into it. Alex gets taken by aliens and some guy appears saying "I knew it!" Not funny, not entertaining, just UFO because UFO. Good thing Downpour decided against it.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work like that, but I can kinda see what they were going for.

Well at least it's not as horrible as Homecoming...oh God not Homecoming. I skipped Origins back the day because I didn't have a PSP at that time. But I was sooooo excited to play a new Silent Hill on a HD console (well I actually played it on PC with a controller). But nope! It was a mess, it didn't even look good. It was just a bad game and a bad survival horror, not just a bad Silent Hill game.

I actually really enjoyed origins. I liked going to the locations from 1, and seeing the characters.

I liked the weapon variety a lot. It really teaches you about how each weapon should word in a survival horror game.
