      The A7SIII is a great camera. I bought 1 to test, and I feel i might keep it. I believe though that cameras should be judged by how perfect they are for "Projects" not for "Filmmakers". Unless all you shoot is the same type fo stuff, then yeah you can say "It's perfect for me"
      I have like 7-8 cameras... I never had one that I can say it works for all my projects.

    You have earned my respect. Very informative. You deserve the 5mill Peter McKinnon has. I can't stand the: "so I shot this on a wide aperture, it was like f1.4, I used a 25mm most expensive lens I can get affiliates from, and I just pretend to know what I'm doing but I don't" type of videos lately, they annoy the living xxx out of me. I have a Panasonic GH5 myself and I'm looking to buy either the Sony A7Siii, or the Sony A7C. Since I'm not a professional Filmmaker myself, I think the siii is overkill. The GH5 kind of is too, but it was very affordable for what it offers. I absolutely hate the AF though and after many ruined footage and nights of filming, I finally got fed up with it. So that's why I'm in the market for a new camera. Hopefully you'll have a video on the Sony A7C too!

    what 8k world??? no even cinema project in 4k, they 2k or 3k most of them, and if you need more Mpxs go for a7R line with 42Mpxs; even ARRI that is the major movie camera is only 4k

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Gerardo, check the description.. I'm being sarcastic. Maybe it's not clear int he video
      FYI: Arri 65 is a 6.K Camera.
      RED helium, launched 4 years ago is 8K
      So the point in the end is how the S3 is going in the opposite direction to where others are going with 6k...8k.. and even 12K

    • @gerardocamposfilms
      @gerardocamposfilms 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@THEDPJOURNEY Sorry didn't get the sarcasm. And yes Arri 65 is 6K but how many 65s are in the market??, RED is not the standart, is a puch limit company but not the standart, I have a Terra 6K and 7 diferent 4K cameras, most videos end up in 1080 and some of them in 4K. The DP Journey this comment sounds so bad coming from you, No sony isn't going the opposite direction, everyone who buys this camera know that they will primarily be shooting videos, so the resolution doesn't matter that much the actual footage matters more, comparing it to red 8k and arri 65 6k is also really weird cause arri also make lower resolution cameras so they're going the opposite direction too? No, each camera have their own pros/cons yes sony advertise it as good still camera, arri would do the same if their cameras can shoot photos, it's just marketing, no average users would buy a $3500 camera without knowing that it is not the best photo camera out there

      I own the S1h and besides the great IQ, build quality and all the super filmmaker tools it is giving me a lot of doubts, especially the AF. Often I am a one man show and on more than one occasion I wasn't sure if the image was going to be sharp. For me personally this A7sIII would have been a better choice because of the maxed out 4k features (I don't need more), the weight and of course the great autofocus. Also the L-mount might not be it for me. I'm waiting for the new firmware update Panasonice has announced to make a final decision. Any other S1h owners willing to share their thoughts?

    Love your videos. Packed full of great info delivered in an efficient and engaging format. You're the first and only channel I've ever subscribed to notifications. Regarding the A7Siii, why not just go with a dedicated cinecam if seeking a video camera (which is basically that the A7Siii is trying to be). There are lightweight options available on the market at the same price point, and any size advantage the A7Siii has goes right out the window as soon as start caging up and adding external monitor, etc.
    Edit: Should add, I can however see how the A7Siii makes sense if already invested in Sony system, so can share glass across bodies.

      @THEDPJOURNEY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cinecams are pretty bulky, much bulkier than a caged Mirrorless... in all cases there's no such thing as perfect camera. Thanks again for the support

    • @RolandAyala
      @RolandAyala 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@THEDPJOURNEY Generally true. I opted for a Z-cam. Had the S1H recorded ProRes 422 internal (like Z-cam) then I would have gone with it since can double as a still good stills camera. Again, IMHO, better off with a small form factor cinecam like Z-cam or BMPCC than A7Siii, unless wanting to re-purpose E-mount glass. But I completely agree with your assessment -- no perfect camera.

    Man I'd love to see a review about the Canon C70 made by you !
    Like, do you think the long gop codec reduce the quality way to much ? Personally I think that we've reached a quality that is so high that you can't notice those things when you watch the video on real-time.
    You could only notice it if you take 2 footages side by side (all-i and long gop) and look at them frame by frame.
    Same question about having no raw. I think we can really do beautiful colorgradings on a 422 10 bit file.
    What do you think ?

I don't know why all these other TH-cam reviewers insist on comparing the R5's video capabilities (a photo first camera) with the A7Siii's video capabilities (a video first camera). But yet don't do an R5 vs A7Siii photo comparison. That because they wouldn't compare. It'd be like comparing a Ferrari with a G-Wagon, they don't compare.

    Thanks for your insight. Always appreciate the depth of your research. A big issue (for me) in the A7S III lowlight footage shot by Phillip Bloom is heavy NR artifacts. Massive loss of detail and smearing. The S1H used to suffer from this too until a firmware update added a -1 setting that eliminated ghosting/smearing in V-Log. Hopefully Sony will do the same.

    I'm not even looking at this camera, but I watched the video anyway as I always learn something! Your technical knowledge combined with super-clear explanations make it easy to digest, and I really appreciate the very practical orientation around "who is this camera for" and "what does it do well" (versus the competition).
    One request, if it fits with your content plan. Could you take a look at entry level cinema cameras, and give us an overview of when/who should consider the step up from high end mirrorless to purpose-made cinema cameras? This is a decision I anticipate having to make in the future, and one which I've already started to think about. So I'm thinking of cameras like the Ursa Mini and Canon's C200 etc. It would be super interesting and useful to have you walk through how you decide which camera to use for a shoot, from the perspective of "right tool for the job."

      The DP Journey - Brilliant news, thank you! It's not an imminent decision for me, so very happy to wait and enjoy in the meantime the other episodes you have planned. I'm sure it's a dilemma that more and more people are facing these days, as so many people have "grown into" (and perhaps "out of") their mirrorless cameras' video capabilities (many coming from photography backgrounds as you did). What prompted me to think about this, actually, was Canon's launch of the R5 and all its overheating problems... it made me wonder, "when IS a true cinema camera the right camera to buy?" That said, I can't believe how bad a mis-step Canon have made with the R5. As you say, it's damaged their brand image amongst the mirrorless brigade who were already moving away from Canon... such a shame.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY

      The DP Journey Yes I saw the press releases today. I guess if you're already adding XLR adapters, recorder, ND filter etc then there is a logic to going for a cine body rather than mirrorless. But value for money? Look forward to your take on how to weigh up all the options and simplify it all down to what really matters. My small brain and lack of experience can't cope LOL!!

      The DP Journey - I just read this article on ProvideoCoalition that I thought you'd find interesting if you have't seen it yet: it's on the differences between the C300 and C500, focusing on the practicalities of the S35 vs full frame sensors of these cameras. I thought it was brilliant: very similar in style to your videos, in that the insights are super practical and useful rather than merely technical (in an academic sort of way).

    I bought the S1H a couple months ago. I mainly use it to make music videos. It does great in 4K 25 FPS in Full Frame, but when I need to take slow motion B-Roll shots, it sucks that I need to go 1080p to do 60 FPS in Full Frame. The 4K 60 FPS Full Frame option is very nice from the A7s III. If the A7s III had a higher megapixel, I'd switch cameras instantly. But the low megapixel count is something that makes me want to keep my S1H, because I sometimes to photography work aswell. Come to think of it, I don't do professional photography that much. Very rarely.
    I might change it up... Hmm.

    I read an article from last year where the author stripped down an a7s III sensor and found it is actually a 48MP sensor configured in a 2x2 binning mode. Suggestion was that due to Sony sensor design that this could be contributing to more sensor read noise. Looking at photons to photos it seems the a7s II has lower read noise than the a7s III, despite having an FSI sensor where the a7s III is BSI.
    With the GH6 out now which is capable of very similar frame rates, video bit depth (plus Pro Res internal) and dynamic range (in DR boost mode), I wonder if it is the better option? While AF is important, I'm thinking the IQ boost of 5.7k and significantly oversampled 4k has the GH6 (with good glass) as the better value prospect for indie film makers?

    the arri alexa is a hollywood standard camera and is 2.8k. the a7siii has 16 bit raw output, best lowlight, best dynamic range and best autofocus of the current mirror-less cameras. the nikon d4 was only 16mp and was used as a professional photo camera

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1- ALEXA is not a hybrid camera is not meant for photos.
      2- ALEXA has close to divine sensor... so you can't compare it to this sensor. I used it a 1000 times before, and the difference is clear right out of the box. not sure what they did there, but they created a holy grail of a sensor. It just wont be fair to compare it to any mirrorless honestly. There's a reason why ALEXA is 10X the price, without any fancy AF or IBIS or even 120fps at 4k
      3- 16bit is a bit of a flashy number for marketing reasons, the difference between 12 and 16 bit is not humanly discernible. Even for grading, it's not "better" than 12bit in a practical sense. Just like saying 8K and 16k, they're both good. 16k is an overkill. They're both good enough for everything we need now and also are pretty much future proof. Don't fall for this "16bit"
      4- 16MP in the ikon is already better than 12... and yes, 15 years ago, that was a good standard to work with. But 2020, it's not anymore, you'll simply fall behind and limit yourself if you adopt a 12MP for photos as a commercial photographer. Clients won't hire you... trust me.

    • @legendp2011
      @legendp2011 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@THEDPJOURNEY perhaps 16 bit is a gimmick, but the s1h prores raw is flawed than. because s1h 12 bit raw lacks the flexibility of other raw cameras.......using third party tools like "Assimilate Scratch" it cannot change white balance like you can with the still raw images from s1h (looks more like a prores 444 file). Red has full white balance control with 16 bit r3d red files ......maybe the a7siii will have the same limitation of non changeable white balance in raw. black-magic does fine with 12 bit files (although blackmagic do bake in some info)
      I've worked as a DIT on feature films proccesing 8k red heluim footage as B cam, and 2.8k arri alexa footage as A cam, they both look great. I am not saying less resolution is better, just that I would always take dynamic range over resolution. Cropping is nice, but if you change framing too much (crop into sides) than I find lens distortion can ruin shots
      and given the better lowlight performance of the a7siii, it's likely to mean less noise (higher dynamic range) in Raw.
      the nikon d4 came out in 2012. for product shots, fashion shoots, landscape......than higher megapixels is important. but for event work there is minimal difference as I'm often shooting at high ISO (1600-6400), so the detail from higher MP is lost after deniosing the images. granted I do 85% video, 15% photos.
      I do appreciate your videos. they are well made, I look forward to seeing your breakdown on the two cameras. I did want to share my thoughts on the two. every camera has it's pros and cons

      @THEDPJOURNEY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah prores coming out of S1H sucks... I have 2 long episodes breaking everything down if you’re interested to spend 45 min watching them :)
      I used to have a helium then replaced it with Gemini now... shot with Alexa so many times, so I do agree on the importance of DR, I would add to it color science. Yeah smaller K is not better, it just has some limitations you need to be aware of. That’s all am saying.
      I personally... and I stress on “personally” wouldn’t shoot professional work with less than 20MP. Not all wedding couples would like to have their day captured in 12mp in 2020. I made sure to make this very clear it’s a personal choice for me shooting at 20MP. If anyone wants to shoot 12mp in a pro setting, then please do... am not here to tell you what to do or not to do. Am only “sharing” my “personal” experience and opinion. Which I know won’t please everyone. But I’m sure it’ll help you decide what’s best for you.

    As always: Great work done with this video. Its so much more Logical to compare the A7S3 to an S1H then to an R5. Owning and loving the S1 a lot, I would sum it up with this: S1H is a great Tool for Video work over all. The A7S3 has more features to support a run and gun style of shooting (AF/LowLight), but lacks with waveforms, shutter degree etc. . Choosing between them just depends on your kind of work (and workflow). For hybrid-jobs the S1H/S1 is a better option as well - or a second Sony-Body.
    Personally I think it is a great time in this compact camera segment for consumers.

    Totally agree about the 12mp stills limitations, for my work at least (others won't care if it's only for social media). I'd buy this camera in a heartbeat if it was higher but then there would be other compromises obviously. I remember 12mp on the old Nikons but I've had billboard and crop issues with 20mp in the past.
    Now I would shoot 60% stills and 40% video and the R5 got me excited, and then disappointed. I need reliability and if your camera isn't working, you don't have a camera. Hopefully those issues can be addressed. Good times for photo/video really. Great video.

    Great work as always, absolutely love the presentation, graphics and concise, incisive and professionally informed content. However, a few sticking points... pixel binning is not the same as line skipping, which is what the R5 normal 4K does, therefore introducing moire and mush... pixel binning is actually creating a 'super pixel' by combining the average from the 'excess pixels', but surely you know this? Btw, you have typo immediately after that excerpt at 7:29: 'Cnaon'? Having had the Canon R5 for 2 weeks and being apalled by the overheating, after extensive testing I'm happy with the fact I can record unlimited 4K HQ with the Atomos Ninja V or using crop mode, as it's an acceptable trade off for the quality compared to the A7S III. It also saves a huge amount on media, being able to record on cheap 1-2TB SSDs instead of the extortionate CFExpress. Love your work either way dude.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Richard, yeah I never said that P.Binning is the same as L.Skipping, I already explained binning visually in the episode as you saw I guess. In all cases they're both bad... whichever Canon end up using. I felt it's more like pixel binning from the samples I've seen.
      Yeah that typo was a bit late to fix! I saw it when it too late

Specs alone do not translate into inherent final film(ic) quality, investing 2K$ upwards + lenses (hence system) is a massive undertaking/decision, therefore would you assess S1H as a sensible path (how well will it hold value as a tool), or would it be best to hold and wait for a new Panasonic S1H version (or even a Sony A7IV)? Confusion: Sony A7SIII sensor is 4240 pixels wide. With 1.104 crop, with active steadyshot or 4K 120p, you get 3840 pixels horizontal. I think one of your points you state that you get LESS than 3840 UHD when in Active or 120p. Am I incorrect in how Sony is working thier sensor and stated sensor specifications? My confusion also lies in that if my understanding is correct, then the A7SIII is slightly oversampling 4240 down to 3840 UHD? :-\

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      there's no 100% information out there that explains this honestly. I doubt they're oversampling 4240 to 3840 since this might do more damage than good actually. oversampling, to be done correctly, the difference between the source and target res should be much bigger, 6K to 4K minimum. otherwise sharpness will be compromised

    why bring the FX9 to the oversampling example? The A7III does it, etc, there was no need to bring camcorder to the argument. Also the S1 does the same 4k as the S1h and does it without a fan, so the fan isnt to film 4k oversampled

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I brought the FX9 just to prove it since it's a pro Video camera as they literally mention oversampling in the page, rather than stating the A7III, which would sound as an opinion. The fan in S1H is for many other reasons anyway.. I was keeping things short, not to go off-topic, it's about the S3 after all.
      Thanks for watching Bruno

    wait, you can shoot anamorfic on a camera that undertsands what the heck that is?
    Anyway the A7III already oversamples from 6k and doesnt overheat as far as i know

      I am really drawn towards S1H but l mount and autofocus is holding me back and A7S iii lacks good photo quality. Help!!

      @THEDPJOURNEY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@meraakifilms Yeah that's a bit of a pickle... I personally like the S1h... AF needs some work. I believe they'll still improve it further in all cases. Maybe not to the level of SONY and Canon, but closer than what it is now
