    Cheers, Karl. You're da man!! Not sure if you're still around, but that was an absolutely fantastic video! I've struggled with ACT on and off for years trying to control VSTs using an external controller. Suddenly I can do exactly that. So thanks a million!

    Yes thank you for this. Just bought a Novation Impulse 49 key and it's my first midi controller ever. With the Automap software not working very well for Sonar X3 I was getting quite frustrated trying to understand how to set this up. Your video explained very well how to set things up, very clear and concise.

    • @davmar9923
      @davmar9923 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisjones1849 I haven't tried it yet. I'd like to download the new free version first since it is pointless to use old SONAR anymore, other than to keep it installed so the various accessory apps can be used with the new version. I noticed in the video that there seems to be a preset for the AKAI MPK49, which my older version of SONAR Platinum Lifetime didn't have. Hopefully, that will make it much simpler to implement.

    The mapping is a two stage process. Use MIDI learn to assign the physical controls to the ACT cells. The functions are then assigned to the cells using the ACT dialogue options.
    I don't have an Axiom but the ACT system works well with my PCR-800, ZED-R16 and BCF2000 so it may be the Axiom.

    I think you'll find the problem is that the ACT dialogue is designed for surfaces with a single bank of 8 controls. The banks within the ACT dialogue all correspond to the same eight controls so you can't MIDI learn SOnar's Bank 2 (or 3 or 4).
    You can use more than eight controls with the Generic Surface which has a similar setup interface. The might be your best option. I'm assuming that there is no special surface controller for the Akai?

  • @KarlRose_1
    @KarlRose_1  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. Think of a patch on a synth as a preset sound. On a general MIDI synth "Piano", "Strings", "Organ"are all patches. They are then organised into "Banks"of usually either 128 or 256 patches.
    A lot of synths have multiple "Banks" each containing multiple "Patches". Other devices such as FX units and Guitar Processors also use "Banks" & "Patches"
    HTH

  • @KarlRose_1
    @KarlRose_1  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's where the presets come in. Once you've got the surface attached as an ACT controller via the Control Surface dialogue box you can open up the ACT properties box (as in the video)
    At the top of that there's a drop down list where you can access the supplied presets. I would imagine you'll find one there for the Novation. If not it may be worth posting a request on the CW forum and asking if someone already has one.
    Failing that it's a one time thing that you can do and save yourself HTH.

  • @KarlRose_1
    @KarlRose_1  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you mean for getting it up and running or just using it as an ACT device? I don't have the Akai MPK 49 so you may be better asking on a forum where there are more users.
    If it's the ACT side and there is no specialist preset use the standard ACT dialogue and map it as required using the video as a guide.

    Hi - Great information. Not sure if you're still active on this tutorial, but I have a question. When I set up multiple ACT control surfaces, I can only use one of them and it's always the first control surface in the list. So, let's say it's colour assignment is green, whenever I add a new track, it defaults to green. If I right-click on the colour band on the track, it gives me an option to 'Move ACT midi controller *name* here' but it doesn't change to the new colour. Thanks

    • @KarlRose_1
      @KarlRose_1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the delay, only just seen this. Do you mean that the controller isn't following the track assignment when you try and reposition its focus? You can't recolour the ACT surface itself from the track view. You need to open Preferences->Control Surfaces and change the WAI (Where Am I) colour there. HTH

    Useful video, Karl. I'm trying to set up a template for Komplete Kontrol keyboard within Sonar Platinum but nothing seems to work. Have you any experience with that particular keyboard? I've got it working as a normal midi controller (big deal...) but I want to be able to use the knobs and light functions. There seems to be vague posts on some websites but nothing really useful. Thanks.

    Hi very good video but I am struggling. I have an M Audio Oxygen Pro 61 I'm trying to map to Cakewalk. The Oxygen Daw mode can be set to Mackie, Mackie/Hui, CC and program. I'm not sure which I should use on the Oxygen for transport controls in Cakewalk and for Rotaries and Sliders. Do I need to setup Transport controls in ACT or Cakewalk Generic Surface? Hope you can help. Very confused.

    • @KarlRose_1
      @KarlRose_1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your controller has the ability to use mackie mode I would try that first and see if that meets your needs. Pros are it's already setup, well mapped and provides feedback to the unit if it has motorised faders, display etc. - One con is it can't be remapped if it doesn't meet your needs. In that case ACT can be configured to how you want it to work.
      The assignment to Mackie or ACT etc is made in Preferences->MIDI->Control Surfaces. For Mackie choose "MCU" in the port assignment.
      The Cakewalk Generic Surface option can be used for transport assignment but shouldn't be needed if using Mackie Control as that is already pre-assigned. It is possible to use more than one Controller to Surface assignment should you need to. For instance on my old ZED-R16 I used to use the ACT surface to control Faders, rotaries, and buttons and the transport controls were assigned to the Cakewalk Generic Surface. To do that just create two entries in Preferences->MIDI->Control Surfaces, one for ACT, one for the Generic Surface.
      To state the obvious, if you do use more than one assignment to a surface and then assign any button, rotary or fader in both entries it is going to be interesting and confusing to say the least if one control is assigned to two different parameters. ;-)

      Hi. Yes this should work for any device although some have specialised ACT surfaces available from the drop down list. If it doesn't the regular ACT surface will work.

  • @KarlRose_1
    @KarlRose_1  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Possibly some corruption in the file where the settings are stored.
    Rename or delete the original files "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\ACT Data" - the ones you want are "sonaract"and "genericpluginparams"
    New ones will be created and sort any corruption out

    What if gives no indication of having learned when you move a control?

    • @KarlRose_1
      @KarlRose_1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would indicate that the control isn't being recognised, assuming you have the "ACT" button within the instrument of FX interface. Have you used MIDI learn to assign the control to the ACT cell? See around 5:55 for that.

    hey, after 6 months of having my alesis vi49 ive finally decided to learn how to control something other than the keybed. Ive just got a couple questions. I cant seem to set the record button, or anything on the control bar. second the controller has 48 buttons and there are only 20 free tiles so am i forced to ignore most of the buttons? also knowing this video came out in 2012 is there any helpful plug ins that are more up to date?
    Id be surprised if you gave a response this late, but i would really appreciate the help.

    • @KarlRose_1
      @KarlRose_1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. I'm not in my studio so I am working from memory here. I am also not familiar with your alesis vi49. If, and this depends on your alesis. If you can set your buttons into banks of buttons, with ideally 8 in a bank, then you can use the extra buttons. To assign other baks of buttons use the bank dropdown selection in the options tab.
      You should be able to find various functions such as "record" (and othe control bar functions) in the drop down choice of commands in the ACT options dialogue tab. They are a bit haphazard in their order though. If you mean there's a record button on your controller that you cannot set then you can use the "cakewalk generic surface" (or something like that, my memory isn't that good) as a control surface assigned to your alesis and set transport functions from there. I do something very similar with my ZED-R16.
      It is possible to assign more than one control surface type to a single controller from within Sonar (or CbB) preferences and assign functions from both if there are buttons on your controller (Your alesis) that are inaccesible. Thinking about it you can probably assign any spare buttons using that method if the "Bank" idea isn't possible. You will have to go through a "Learn" process very similar to this one within the Generic Surface options though.
      If when I get back to my system I find I have given you wrong information or find a different solution I will post it here.
      HTH

  • @KarlRose_1
    @KarlRose_1  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    ACT is one way only and motorised faders won't respond. For that you'll need a different protocol that doesn't support two way comms, such as the "Mackie" Protocol.

    Thanks for the vid, but has anybody got Cakewalk BandLab or Sonar mapped to the transport controls of an Arturia Keylab Essential 49. I can record and play Midi, I just can't get it to pick up the midi learn. When I click midi learn and press one of the transport control buttons, nothing happens. Is it just perhaps a case of compatibility. Thanks

    • @KarlRose_1
      @KarlRose_1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Have you mapped any of the controls successfully? It might be worth downloading MidiOX. With that you can at least see if MIDI data is being successfully sent from your keylab. It could be a setting, I have a PCR-800 and that can be set to use a different MIDI port for conrol data to that used by the keyboard. In CbB preferences you need to make sure that the surface port is available in the MIDI devices list and set up as a controller witht he correct port in the control surface tab.

    Does anybody knows where to find the XML-Data of the self defined ACT-Presets?
    To me it is impossible to find thems path in the system, for to copy them to my new system. Is the work of hours and hours of routing gone?
    If I copy the sonaract.xml and the generalpluginsact.xml to my new system, my self defined ACT-Presets are´nt appearing. I copied them from and to C:/Users/*USER*/AppData/Cakewalk/ACT-Data. But I find only the standard ACT-Presets which came with Sonar.....

    Hello,
    Thanks for the video. Maybe you can help with this-
    I have I have a black Oxygen 61. For some reason, the pitch bend, don't bend the pitch. when I move it up, the screen shows 127, When I move it down, it shows 00, and when it go back to the middle, it shows 64. The sound itself which I used in the past and changed the pitch, don't change the pitch or any other sound and it is visible that the soft synth is getting a signal from Oxygen 61 (The modulation wheel is effecting the sound as it suppose to). I already looked and found this-
    community.m-audio.com/m-audio/topics/pitch-bend-problem-in-oxygen-61
    The version of oxygen 61 keyboard picture-

    Do you know how can I reset it? Please help.

      +Smart Halayla Hi. Are you using the standard ACT MIDI control template? I'm not sure that sort of information is passable via ACT. Having said that the pitch bend should still work. Is pitch bend info being recorded onto the track when recording?

    • @smarthalayla1549

      Thanks for the replay. The pitch bend control is sending messages, but not pitch bend message. The vst itself give signal for midi usage, but the sound itself doesn't change. The keys play on pitch (I saw someone had his keyboard Shifted half tone down) and the modulation wheel works as expected.
      I suspect that the Oxygen 61 might changed the parameters of the midi routing so the pitch bend wheel itself doesn't act as a pitch bend but signaling for another function which the vst itself is not program for that. Again, in the past, it worked without issues.
      I also contacted M-audio for resting the Oxygen 61 to its original state, with no replay.

    Disappointing, not with your tutorial, but with the fact that, apparently ACT controllers cannot be used to send any desired MIDI CC. The only parameters that can be programmed appear to be Pan, Volume, Sends, and Input Trim. That doesn't interest me at all. I purchased a Nektar Panorama P1, not to control mixer functions, but to send desired MIDI CC's to Cakewalk.
