They have specifically said they won't do this on retail units, Specifically they said they heard the pushback and changed the way that they will move forward. Which is great to hear.
There needs to be a mature attitude from companies around opening up to selling rom sets. I think Sega and Arari sell retro game collections. If copies could be sold legally, people will buy them even if piracy is rampant.
@@NerdNest what about the Atari Collection and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis collections on Steam or GOG? Is it illegal (or even possible) to try and rip it strip the rom assets from our legally obtained copies of them? I wondered that. Seems more ethical at least.
I'm not a lawyer but I would say, if you bought the game, and you didn't sell the game, then it is ethical to download a ROM or rip from your cartridge / digital game. Downloading is still illegal, but it's absolutely ethical in my opinion.
@@NerdNest well there's legal precent for ripping your own games for your own use so that's definitely also legal, but I agree that morally there's nothing wrong with not bothering and just download the ROM for something you paid for already.
@@skycloud4802 At least for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis collection on Steam, you don''t need to rip anything. Any game you bought for it also comes with a rom file you can play in any genesis/mega drive emulator. They're literally in a folder titled "Uncompressed ROMs". Similarly, any of the romhacks you download from the workshop are uncompressed roms too.
For me, no trackpads = no deal. The two big things I use them for are mouse regions for RTS games, and radial menus (in fallout 4 I use one for items and the other for weapons)
I'm in the "just don't care" boat. And I'll just ask this question "How many times is it reasonable for Nintendo to expect us to buy the same game?" My answer is once.
Once I lost access to my games from nintendo I will only pirate their work anymore. They steal my property from me and sell it back every decade I refuse to give another dime.
I mean part of the question is do we want them to continue as a company? I know they are prey anti consumer but, it would suck more to just lose them developing games 🤷🏽♂️
@@JosePineda-jn8jk That's a fair question, but as far as I'm concerned, Nintendo's actions in the last few months have lost me as a customer. Now that's not some manipulation implying you should do the same. But to answer your question directly: Yes, Nintendo brings a net benefit to the games industry. But much of the good they do is offset by their aggressively litigious temperament.
@@Immortan_Bob so you would prefer to possibly move forward with no more of their games if they ever did decide to back off of development due to piracy? Old games are one thing to me for sure but, I don’t mind paying for newer games because I know people put work into it.
I haven’t picked up Elden Ring because I’ve heard how difficult it is. I’m just no longer into “getting good” at a skill that doesn’t produce something. I play games to enjoy myself and relax. If I want to “get good”, I’ll get it at gardening or drag racing or woodworking. The community is a turn off as well. Screw those guys
The main thing is just stick with it (or use a guide to cheese). I don't think Elden Ring is that difficult. I'm not saying I wouldn't die just as much or more. I've barely played it (I don't own it. Is in the queue, I'll get there or not). It is definitely a game that you have to learn to play thru, takes time but if it otherwise interests you, give it a go. Is not a finish far game. I'm with you on building tangible real world skills. My larger issue with Elden Ring is the aesthetics, which is weird, because Resident Evil doesn't bother me, though it had some stuff I could do without. I find Nino Kuni charming, but I know some people find it ugly. I get past the art style of some other games that aren't my thing. The From Soft art is great, some of it is even gorgeous, but other stuff is quite off putting. I don't got time for that.
Former U.S. Marine here. I just wanted to say I appreciate the cursing. Makes me more comfortable and lets me see you guys are normal like me. Thx for your service in the army guy with green shirt. Sorry. Horrible with names. I know one of you is named "Rich". Love the channel. Game on!
Forgot to mention, my kid was playing Pokemon Leaf Green and when you boot that game up it recaps the last 4 or 5 things you did in the game. Fantastic feature more games could use.
My first emulation device was an Anbernic. I bought it because I was intimidated by all the different emulators, the roms and the set up process. I just wanted a device with the games on it. Now that I am immersed in the retro gaming hobby, none of the stuff that intimidated me before I jumped in intimidates me now. 😅 I have friends who felt the same as I did. They would not have gotten into the hobby if the entry ramp were not made as gentle and easy as possible.
Accessibility options of course can go the other way too. Add *MORE* things to be more difficult or demanding for players who have become bored or seeking more challenges. A couple examples off the top of my head are Kingdom Hearts 3, pretty much all rhythm games, and recently Starfield. Kingdom Hearts games also do the "no-pausing" system but is pretty good. Item screens do not pause on combat nor are even accessible. All items must be pre-equipped and menu controlled with the dpad akin to old school Final Fantasy games. And if you run out that's it. Even with all this, there *IS* still a pause menu. And the upgraded bosses in KH3 DLC are far harder than anything in Soulslikes. Speed, reaction, and mechanical knowledge ceilings are higher in KH3 and the devs made sure of it for the DLC bosses. Those bosses will not waste their time with pushover players lol.
Kingdoms of Amalur is a great game, it just started out as an mmorpg to be like WoW, because Curt Schilling loved WoW(the lore was created by R.A. Salvatore), and through development it got changed into a single player game. It looks similar to wow and has great gameplay.
I'm always amazed that no studio has made a movie of "The Crystal Shard" there's literally decades of stories from Salvatore to delve into. Not to mention offshoots like Artemis that could be excellent stand alone series.
The trackpads are awesome for shooters and fighting games. (if you know how to set them up). for shooters: limit vertical aim sensitivity greatly, so your left/right swipes are accurate. and use gyro for vertical aiming. similar to flick-stick. but much less confusing. and better! For fighters: disable 'click' and disable 'up' direction, and place 'up' on right-bumper (so theres no accidental jumps)
I beat it by mostly just doing the story and a few side missions, and I never found the gameplay to become repetitive or boring, which surprised me. I definitely wouldn't want to 100% the game though, the gameplay to me only works when it's serving the story and the worldbuilding.
I remember when I got my Steam Controller, I wanted to test the trackpads and I set up "Velvet Assassin" to play 90 percent on the trackpads. All character movement on the left trackpad with touch. Worked fantastically!!! I used the analog stick as the d-pad. Some other actions on the face buttons. It worked great for me. It's strange to me to hear people aren't that hot on the track-pads, but I do get it.
I'm willing to bet the person expecting ROMs to be included on the handhelds don't realize that the handheld isn't like getting a retro gaming system from Walmart with X amount of games where the licensing has been paid. They either don't no about the licensing or don't care, but I'm betting most don't know.
I believe they dont have pause in Elden Ring because of invasions, and to give the game a constant feel similar to MMOs. Ultimately a more persistent world. I do however agree that the player should be able to choose. The ones who doesn't want pvp can play offline anyway. That said, the feeling you get after mastering these games and the life lessons they teach can't be achieved without its difficulty. It teaches consistency and persistence, how to learn new skills and build habits to succeed in the game, which interestingly translates to real life. And most importantly, it teaches patience.
I remember watching dogs had invasions in game and it meant pausing only stopped the game while not being invaded. Seemed a good compromise but it meant you could tell if you had a sneaky lad on your tail by pausing.
30:03 YEEEEEES!!!! when you finish mgs and they show you. ok you got this many alerts, etc etc, for that reson here is your rank. its so cool. def a better way to go about it
Thanks for recommending Xenotilt! I just picked that up and it’s a blast. And, yeah, it’s gorgeous on the OLED Steam Deck if a bit small. I changed the zoom settings in the options and the size is a bit better.
The problem with Kingdoms of Amalur was that it came out right about the same time as Skyrim. It is a great game, really well done. Just got overshadowed by one of the most hyped games of all time.
Taki Udon did a video a while back, I believe about an Anbernic device, but he noted this was pretty standard with all the Chinese handhelds, where they appeased Western sensibilities by removing the ROMsets from the ones they shipped overseas, but left them all in on the Chinese stock. China's current culture/mindset is to not care at all about copyright--IP theft is commonplace and considered the norm there, even encouraged if it lets them get ahead. And as long as people keep supporting those devices, they'll keep doing it. So if you truly want to protect emulator developers from the likes of Nintendo, the first step is to show that we don't support companies making money distributing ROMs on their devices, so Nintendo can't keep making the argument that emulation automatically = piracy.
Honestly to say this might "kill emulation devices" is an exaggeration. They're mostly chinese companies, they literally don't care. I don't even think it's possible for Nintendo to sue these device makers because of how IP laws work in China.
I don't care about good rumble, but I do need rumble. It's just feedback when I expect it and not having it removes something I would have had to keep me up to date.
For some reason I remember being able to pause elden ring....Not using a standard pause button, but wasn't there a specific menu that would actually pause the game? I could have sworn I remember having an "AHA" moment figuring that out
They say it in the podcast. Yes, there's some weird specific menu that pauses the game, but that's not a feature, it's just a bug they chose to leave in.
On the topic of ROM sets, one of the issues is that if the OS that it ships with doesn't give you the ability to scrape art, there are likely to be significant complications with adding your own box art. They would have to make sure the OS is compatible with Screenscraper and I don't think that's always possible. On the 35XX devices, the stock firmware is a perfect example of this. When I added more ROMS and box art, the box art was the wrong pixel dimensions and looked squished to the point of pointlessness.
On the topic of Elden Ring. Those kind of games aren't typically my kind of game due to the difficulty, though I have played a bit of Elden Ring. So the existence or lack thereof of a pause button doesn't really matter to me. I can see both sides of it why some would want it and others not. But at the end of the day, these games are designed in a specific manner, with their own quirks and all. The people that have stuck with the games for the past decade or more all tend to gravitate towards it due to how easy and honestly kind of dumbed down games were and still are becoming. Some of my favorite games have easy modes or other ways to mitigate any and all difficulty and yet people still find ways to complain about meeting ANY challenge that can't be beaten by holding forward. So I can definitely see why the Souls fans tend to be more strongly against most of the suggestions. Elden Ring also made some adjustments that made it a lot more accessible to newcomers. The end result is that more people got into the series and now are demanding Fromsoft make more changes to appeal to even more mainstream audiences. The problem I have with that is that everything else is pretty much already catered to that audience. Not everything needs to appeal to everybody all at once. Sometimes it is okay for a niche product to appeal to just a niche audience. You and others say "Well you don't have to use the pause button" but this ignores what is reality right now. There is no intended pause button in Elden Ring or the other Soulsborne games. They intentionally designed the games without that and though there are workarounds that people have discovered, the intented experience is for the world to not be able to be paused. The fans of these games seem to prefer it that way, they are the ones that bought the Soulsborne games in the past and they were the most hyped for Elden Ring. They like these games as they are. Ultimately, any change would have to be made by them and if they feel that it isn't worth compromising their vision (even if a pause button doesn't seem like a big deal to you, it may to them), then I would bet they likely won't add one. Just like how Nintendo was adamant on having the durability mechanic in BOTW and TOTK and didn't take it out despite people complaining. Now though I didn't play a lot of ER, from what I played I don't think it really needs a pause button either. As long as I sat my character away from enemies, they would generally have been safe if I needed to go somewhere. Worst comes to worse, your character dies and you go back to where they died to get your runes back, even if you die again runes are easy to get. Death in these games isn't really that big of a deal. if you die in a boss battle, you respawn outside of the room and are safe. And if you have a kid that is in danger for some reason, the last thing on my mind would be to pause, at that point I would deal with the kid and put the game down until they were asleep or something. All of that said, if you really want to use a pause button, somebody mentioned a mod that added it.
I thought the pause argument was a bit ridiculous. Is it such a big deal that you die in the videogame? I have 4 dogs, I need to be tending them all the time. I have played Elden Ring twice and yes, sometimes that means I get killed because I am distracted. It's not a big deal, this is a game where you die all the time. So literally just stop tending the game and you'll be back at the site of grace, you lose your runes but you can easily get them back. I think perhaps part of the philosophy of the game is to learn to accept defeat. The game can't be paused and that's just... the way it is.
Elden Ring not pausing is weird but 90 percent of the time you can either rest at a grace or be an area with no enemies, or just let your guy die. I mean honestly its not a big deal to die
@NerdNest it's true, it's odd for that game particular to not have a pause button. Like I get that online games can't be paused. I don't understand why elden ring doesn't.
I remember there was once a backlash over Gran Turismo 5 not having a suspend button over it's hours long marathon races. I think like Gran Turismo, Eldin Ring may add in a option in due time due to backlash.
@@skycloud4802 if they told me it was related to the online functionality I'd say okay but you can pause it through the tricks which makes no sense haha. I know if you go to the home menu too long it disconnects from the online and boots you to the title screen.
as much as I love emulation, i'm kinda sick of it and the ownership debate argument and companies changing their EULA to be license and such. I don't want to pirate. that's a bunch of annoying trouble I don't want to deal with. just allow me to pay for and own an item and i'll get it, but this idea against ownership it's all so frustrating, I just stopped buying stuff I don't own anymore, I don't pirate it instead, i just don't imbibe [wrong word just got off exercise bike and trying to get stoned which is hard now either because of exercising or tolerance I don't know I just know I don't get red eyed no more] content like that, ie stopped buying digital movies etc but i'm hypocritical cause steam is like that yet I have 400 games on steam so finding consistency is hard when even trying
FINALLY an intelligent articulation of piracy and all these (yeah honesty Amazon sells them too, not simply just China the IP thief), great dialogue here guys love the show and today’s content shows why your individual YT channels are a valuable addition to our hobby and retro community. Thanks for speaking the truth today and all the coming years 😊😮
With Elden Ring and pausing, I think the devs just don't care. The game has terrible performance, stuttering, bad frametimes, 60 fps locked and other technical issues. Not saying its right, but they focus more on gameplay and content than improving the technical side or adding accessibility.
I remember I said it sucked the Hori pad didn't have rumble on Rich's video and I really do think it is a shame it has no rumble, cause albeit a small feature it is something I think feels cool on my xbox one controller. On the pause button I think every single player game should be pausable no matter what, I don't think it ever ads to the game that controller disconnects/emergency bathroom breaks is an instant loss.
Kingdoms of Amalur has really solid combat. I wish it got sequels. It came out around the same time as Skyrim, so it being a good but flawed game, getting released against an RPG of a generation. It was destined to not meet sales expectations.
19:50 I do wish you could pause when playing offline, I almost exclusively play offline on my steam deck and have been replaying through the story before going into the DLC and just yesterday a very kind family member handed me a soda and I ended up dying which is fine, but I then sadly died again on my way back to my body and lost a ton of runes (my fault, I need to get good). I can certainly see how being able to pause would be problematic online especially if you like to allow invaders and such, but I definitely think it could be implemented into offline mode, not a necessity but I think it would be nice.
I basically can’t play Elden Ring because of the absence of pause. The only chance I get to game is during my son’s naps. Even then I have passive chores that I have to tend to every now and again like laundry going on in the background so I simply can’t play for long enough to get to grips with the gameplay or make significant progress.
I think there are people arguing apples to oranges with fromsoft having a pause mechanic. Most games the gameplay pauses in menus while fromsoft doesn't. This means you can't escape the world as your shifting gear and spells around, so you can't do this while in combat. It doesn't stop to look in your bag kind of thing. While, I do support a proper pause that simply suspends the game without breaking the prior reason the menu doesn't pause. I wouldn't be surprised that this is more of a technical limitation due to the online invasion implementations.
You can pause the game by going into a specific menu (item descriptions, it's pretty much a glitch), so we know it's not a technical reason. It's a design choice, they don't want you looking in your bag but they also don't want you catching your breath either.
re: "steam controller" i do want trackpads. Mostly space-sim type games for mouse/cursor input, eg: Avorion in the build menus, or even Delta V: Rings of Saturn. I don't do RTS, but sometimes useful in CRGs or other things technically with controller support, or having a mouse pad(s) is just easier at times. Rumble = meh, 2 vs 4 back buttons i'm torn on, as sometimes you want all 4, but 2+radials works mostly too.
Id be fine with a steam controller 2 that was just the Deck but without a screen. However I'd prefer if we got something more iterative upon the original SC. That trackpad centric design is what I want. I don't like the awkward placement of the trackpads on the Deck. It's fine for a handheld that needs to include everything. But I have plenty of controllers with 2 sticks, let me have a steam controller with 2 trackpads and maybe 1 stick.
I do think not all games are for everyone. If you want an easy mode for the souls games, then yeah, they are probably not for you. the thing is the difficulty, or the challenge, in them are a feature. a core concept of the game. if you remove that, you no longer play the same game. it's like taking away part of the story in another game, because a lot of people didn't feel comfortable with it. or a lot of people saying, doom games are way too violent, we need to remove that, so they change them and now it's like all other shooters at this point. if you still want to experience the story or art or whatever of a souls game, but you can't keep up with the difficulty, then watch a stream or a walkthrough. for me, this is essentially the same thing with movies. not all movies are for everyone. if you don't like horrors, you skip horror movies, you don't cry for them to retell the same story but censor the horror stuff and make it more action or drama like so you can watch it. also if we return to games, even at the moment not all games are for everyone. if a game is rated R, people don't cry for devs to remove the things that make it R so kids can play it. no kids skip it. it's not for them. That being said, i agree with the pause discussion. generally a pause will not make the game easier, i guess you can get a breather or something, but will that really help? it would probably take you out of the zone. i hear there is no pause because of the online aspect of the game - invasions or whatever they are called, but then why not have them for offline play, or why not disabling the pause only during an active invasion? P.S. I'm not even a hardcore soulslikes player. hell i don't even own any of the souls games, i have like 2 or 3 indie soulslikes, and i barely play them, exactly because of the things said above. i'm not very good at them, i don't have the time to be good at them. and that takes me out of their audience, is that a bummer? yeah, but i accept it because they are not meant for me.
Regarding Elden Rings accessibility: My first playthrough I had zero idea what to do so I followed a guide till the end (Fighting Cowboy). Still had tons of fun. After a break I tried to make a second character but had a really difficult time getting started. I basically cant play the game unless I cheese some dragons to get a huge level up advantage. If I had to slowly level up by incrementally fighting enemies at my level it would take me dozens of hours to grind. So I would say the fact that you can cheese those big bosses and get a huge level up advantage is a form of accessibility. Not to mention there's hundreds of guides online to follow if you want to do a specific build or get through a dungeon or boss. The game doesnt hold your hand but it's not completely impossible either.
I grinded my first character, I did the boulder XP loop my second character which got me to level 65 fast. The big dragon glitch was too easy to screw up if your timing was bad, I'm actually not sure if they patched the dragon mother.
Funny hearing you talk about KoA. I was producing a gaming podcast at that time and we covered everything before, during, and after release. There were such high hopes for the game, but as soon as you looked at where the money was going, it was clear this wasn't sustainable. There were some big names attached to that studio for lore and art design too. Again, such wasted potential.
My understanding of Chinese business culture is that they're IP pirates, period. How many of these handhelds have been blatant copies of each other? I remember back when... One of the GKD things was in development, the GKD guy was wanting to work with community devs, was taking code from them, but wouldn't follow open source because he was like "other companies will steal my IP." So it was fine for him to take code from the open source community but not for them to expect him to open source his code. Rediculous, but again, considering they were all stealing from each other to begin with... Yeah.
Yeah... I don't play games to stress out trying to beat some extreme difficulty. I generally assume Souls-like games are not for me. As for pausing, it is a necessity for grown-ups that can't "pause" the rest of their life to game.
I'm also out of this genre for the same reasons and now with that information that you can't pause it just made everything worse! I get the reason why online games can't pause, but that is a singleplayer campaign focused games, it doesn't make any sense
Hori controller sucks. It takes away more than it adds. We just need a Steam Controller 2, simple as that. Or maybe 8BitDo can work with Valve and make one.
I think before that we need Microsoft to add more features to the xinput protocol like gyros and stuff so we could get those as standard on xinput controllers! So Microsoft is the only one who didn't added those and their api is the standard for PC gaming, they are holding gaming features back by refusing to evolve
@@andremalerba5281microsoft hasn't been using xinput in years. Their current input library supports gyro, remappable buttons, any number of buttons, trackpads...
@Zanpaa Did you look up the controller? It only has 2 rear buttons, it has no rumble and it lacks trackpads - 3 things that define the Deck for many. The D-Pad is squished into an awkward central position too and the analogue sticks are asymmetrical with the overall layout meaning your fingers have to travel further to access everything.
People need to remember that none of us are super heros but we are pkaying super hero characters. A pause feature helps us normies survive real life interruptions while in battles. in starfield I often use the system menu to deal with RL happening while I play
Well in my mind the Emulators themselves shouldn't cost any money because of the what happened with the Yuzu emulator. However with the standard modern games you should purchase them legally. Nintendo can't go after the consumer because they wouldn't have case to do so in terms of suing the only thing they can do with the consumer data is to look up within their own database is to ban their console from playing online. Also if you own your own copy of Shredder's revenge for example there are instructions out there on how to port the game to Android. It's not a Steam controller in the traditional sense because there are no track pads and its not being made by Valve HOWEVER it is a steam controller due it having the Steam Logo on it and finally it is a Japan only release.
The ps5 controller has decent input on the touch pad to emulate a steam touch pad on left and right. If you get me a ps5 style controller with capacitive sticks, we’re gaming. Heck, split the touch pad to match a left and right steam deck input.
I was interested in picking up the Mass Effect trilogy for $6 but some of the comments said it required always being online to sign into EA Origins every time you try to play, and I was hoping to play through them (never played any Mass Effect game) on my Steam deck and being restricted to only being able to play it at home would urk me a bit. Can anybody 1) Confirm whether or not you have to sign in every time vs a 1 time sign in for registration. 2) tell me how the performance has been on Steam deck (or any other x86 handheld)? Tyvm in advance! :)
Games that don't have a pause button just piss me off. At first I figured, well, it's an MMORPG--I just won't play World of Warcraft. Now, they seem to think we want that crap in our offline games. To be fair Steam Deck and Xbox let you to suspend the game and save its state--perhaps more useful on a Steam Deck that you're running on battery power and want to conserve energy anyway. But on a console I don't have those restraints and should be able to pause it to go take a piss and maybe warm up some Hot Pockets or something, without having to waste SSD writes saving the game's state and then having to reload it entirely.
When I got my R4 gold for my 3ds it was loaded with all the NDS and GBA games I could imagine. I cleared that library and put my own on it. I don't see a purpose in loading a card with games that nobody would want to play.
"your kid shoved a knife in the electrical outlet" "Btw, Cover your outlets people" What about the knife?! 😂 Just thinking like a dad 😅, for that reason, i would love a pause button in elden ring. If i use the sleep button on my steam deck, i get kicked out of the game when i resume, since i loose connection
Whoa whoa whoa, you scared me there for a minute... Forza horizon 4 online is NOT going away. It's being delisted because they're not allowed to sell it anymore, but the servers are not going away. Linking things on TH-cam doesn't work well for me but I found a faq page about the delisting which confirmed this.
19:30 I just turned 34 and I'm aiming to see consoles. I am fortunate. I think the issue is not accessibility play, it's the type of game play. If you want to be safe, you go into Bush and crouch down or a bonfire or. log off for a few minutes. I thought that how Elden ring is supposed to be on edge and. any given time you could be bum rushed. I don't know. Tomato, tomato.
Don’t know much of this elden ring game but like... *why not just have a pause function as an option hidden in the settings?* that way they keep their design intact, and also serve to specially those that need it.
That’s just it. You don’t know the game. It has an online component where summons signs appear and disappear, bloodstains appear and disappear, invaders can jump in your game, etc. The game is always moving. Now maybe they could allow a pause for the offline mode but I think it would be an issue with the standard online gameplay.
Kingdom of amalur was kind of underwhelming. A lot of it's part were good on their own, but didn't fit well for me, like the combat, didn't feel like a good fit for an rpg. And then there were a lot of weird or buggy parts. Like you can't move through the last step of a ladder, because it have an invisible wall there, or some npc making weird faces while talking (thinking of angry joe video every time I think of this game)
I loved that game so much I got all achievements for both the original and the remaster, including the dlc. But it's not a perfect game, it just really works for me somehow. Got 146 hours on the original and 106 on the new one. Edit: I think one of the problems it had was the name... I ignored the original for a long time because it sounded like it was like the 3rd or 4th game in a series I had never heard of. It should not have been so long and convoluted.
@@Zzshock77 haven't played those, so I can't compare them. But yeah, it was good on its own like I said, it just didn't fit the game for me (or maybe what I expected of it) The game felt kind of like a mismatch of different game styles that didn't work for me. Probably different people liked exactly that. Also it felt way too easy and that made me feel bored - I fought way beyond my level and never felt really threatened, because of the combat stile. While at the same time if I finished all the quests in an area I went way beyond the area level. As a note I have to say I havent played the remaster, maybe they fixed some things there (?) and in reality I abandoned it pretty early, but I had no intention to play through something that felt boring for me at the time with a hope that it gets better
Anbernic has deleted the 64GB versions of their updates, now the update (16GB only) it's completely devoid of roms and ports. However, it still has that Hotel California FLAC lol
I think there is a big difference between getting roms on emulation devices that cannot be bought new anywhere else and games that can be bought online and played on modern devices.
These companies are exchanging ROMs for money. Big no-no, Downloading ROMs you can't get anywhere because they aren't available is A-Okay in my book. But no one should be selling the ROMs unless they are the people that own the actual IP.

@@NerdNest it's still piracy. It shouldn't be A-Okay in your book. You have no right to be in possession of some companies copyrighted rom. Just because you can't get it any other way doesn't mean it's A-Okay.
I'm not going to say you're wrong here. Because legally and technically, you're not. But if they won't give us a way to give them money. That's on them. Game Preservation is more important than giant corporations bottom lines in my opinion. Game companies put their old ROMs up on Steam for purchase, I'd bet we'd see a lot less piracy.
I just deleted a rambling comment that didn't make sense. TLDR: Let's support devs making new games and emulators, especially when they are so cheap. Don't get mad at Russ for suggesting you spend $5 on PPSSPP when Taylor Swift tickets cost $1500 lol
I will comment for engagement that I agree with Bill, give me a steam deck controller that’s just the deck with no screen. Steam deck is hands down my favorite controller
Personally I hate that Anbernic preloads their devices, it cheapens and sours the experience and their brand. I think that youtubers reviewing them as a bonus normalises it so that people think its ok, but its not...
@@NerdNestnow my follow up is what would you say about remasters and newer editions of music? Should you be allowed to download all versions since you own that originally copy or should you only be allowing yourself to download that one specific version of the song? Idk what I really think about this anymore. I want to be “right” but, also some of these companies seem anti-consumer in the sense that they just don’t rerelease stuff 🤷🏽♂️
ME2 was released over a year before KoA, ME3 was a month after KoA. But there was a lot of competition for our time and $ at the end of 2011 and beginning of 2012 in general. Gears 3 was Sept of 11, BF3 and arkham city were Oct of 11, Skyrim infamously on 11/11/11, skyward sword and uncharted 3 were also Nov, deus ex:HR was there somewhere I think. KoA just got buried by better games.
I have never been a fan of anything that ships with pre installed roms. I don't like it and it opens them up to being shut down. Also I don't find trackpads necessary. They're nice to have in some circumstances but any game that's better with a mouse is better with a keyboard too. I like my Deck OLED but I also like my Ally and I don't feel like I need trackpads. I don't play a lot of games that require mouse input like RTS games and the joy to mouse is good enough for the few times I need to get through the desktop
@@Whatsup_Abroad I don't think anyone was proposing forcing easy mode on anyone. The point is to provide options rather than forcing players into one lane.
Not a fan of the philosophy that disagreeing with games press is an attack. Personally though, I think there should be a pause function if you are out of combat. If you could pause at any time, I don't see how that wouldn't kill the invasions gameplay. I still long for a Steam Controller that's pretty much a Deck without a screen.
I don’t think the game world work with a pause option due to the online component and the world always running by design. Now, if someone wants to play offline and pause, let em do it.
Pause is a cheat in these games. In the middle of a boss fight you can just pause, regather yourself then resume in a calmer head space with more control. The intensity of having to continue the battle all the way through makes it that much more glorified

Abernic better be careful with bundling currently sold IP. They are going to ruin everyone fun.
They have specifically said they won't do this on retail units, Specifically they said they heard the pushback and changed the way that they will move forward. Which is great to hear.
You may not be able to "pause" elden ring, but on steam deck you can just press suspend button instead, which is what I do occasionally.
Smart
This is actually one of the reasons I enjoy ER on the Deck.
Brilliant feature to be sure and one of the important advantages of having Linux as your handheld OS.
I press power on my desktop pc and it is set to sleep and wakes up nicely. Done it overnight several times
Doesn't work that way on the ROG ally.
There needs to be a mature attitude from companies around opening up to selling rom sets. I think Sega and Arari sell retro game collections. If copies could be sold legally, people will buy them even if piracy is rampant.
Absolutely.
Choice choice choice or choice choice choice is a tricky choice
Yeah, I screwed up in the edit, didn't notice until today. Sorry about that!
@@Immortan_Bob Nintendo’s answer is every time they release a new console.
Once I lost access to my games from nintendo I will only pirate their work anymore. They steal my property from me and sell it back every decade I refuse to give another dime.

That's a fair question, but as far as I'm concerned, Nintendo's actions in the last few months have lost me as a customer.
GOG has the original Resident Evil 1-3, the PlayStation classic kind, coming out this year, the first is already out.
Thanks.
I don't got time for that.
drag racing?

Forgot to mention, my kid was playing Pokemon Leaf Green and when you boot that game up it recaps the last 4 or 5 things you did in the game. Fantastic feature more games could use.
My first emulation device was an Anbernic. I bought it because I was intimidated by all the different emulators, the roms and the set up process. I just wanted a device with the games on it.
Now that I am immersed in the retro gaming hobby, none of the stuff that intimidated me before I jumped in intimidates me now. 😅
I have friends who felt the same as I did. They would not have gotten into the hobby if the entry ramp were not made as gentle and easy as possible.
I just wanted to say that Kingdoms of Amalaur is an awesome game. I hope that you give it a try. It's like a mix of Fable and Elder Scrolls.
I can't imagine trusting one of those piracy hard drives.
Regarding the "last time in " thing, Dragon Quest 11 has a version of it!
Definitely give Death Stranding a fair chance, it's far from "just walking" it just seems that way at the start :)
The pause button isn't going to hurt anyone.
I remember watching dogs had invasions in game and it meant pausing only stopped the game while not being invaded. Seemed a good compromise but it meant you could tell if you had a sneaky lad on your tail by pausing.
What happens if I play the game offline? Why do you care how other people play?
I could have sworn I remember having an "AHA" moment figuring that out
I believe opening the map pauses the game, that's what I remember from around launch
Been a biohazard/resident evil fan since 1996.
RE7 in ps4 vr mode was the scariest game ive ever played in my life. Literally almsot shat my pants.😅😂😂
Is it such a big deal that a pause function gets added to a game?
FYI- the red/blue choice graphic looked to be incomplete. Really enjoyed the discussions!
I didn't make that graphic, not sure why it was cut off on the bottom.
Yeah, I screwed up in the edit, didn't notice until today. Sorry about that!
Elden Ring not pausing is weird but 90 percent of the time you can either rest at a grace or be an area with no enemies, or just let your guy die. I mean honestly its not a big deal to die
It's isn't a big deal to have a pause button either.

@@Whatsup_Abroad yeah, as a parent I’ve gotten really into turn-based games

A game for everyone is a game for no one.
Looking up community guides detailing ways to cheese the game isn't an accesibility feature.
@@Zanpaa no but the fact that the cheeses exist and they don't patch them all out is helpful.

As far as Elden Ring goes, you can always just sit at a grace if you don't have time to get out of the game. This is what i do sometimes.
Yeah.
Red pill blue pill on-screen bracket was pointless with the blank choices

The red vs blue graphic is broken, just has choice in the 6 boxes
Yeah, I put the wrong image in when I was editing. That was on me.

Wow someone mentioned metal gear acid. But i dont think that kojima actually worked on the acid games.
I got Dome Keeper, Celeste, Enter the Gungeon and Elden Ring on steam sale. Tell me how I have 78.2 hours into Elden Ring already.
People need to remember that none of us are super heros but we are pkaying super hero characters. A pause feature helps us normies survive real life interruptions while in battles. in starfield I often use the system menu to deal with RL happening while I play
@@Whatsup_Abroad Then don't use it.
I don't think they care about copyright in China. The Chinese version will always have copyrighted material on them.
Love the Nerd Nest!
When I got my R4 gold for my 3ds it was loaded with all the NDS and GBA games I could imagine. I cleared that library and put my own on it. I don't see a purpose in loading a card with games that nobody would want to play.
Right. It’s just so they can say “Includes X number of games”
"your kid shoved a knife in the electrical outlet"
"Btw, Cover your outlets people"
What about the knife?! 😂
Just thinking like a dad 😅, for that reason, i would love a pause button in elden ring. If i use the sleep button on my steam deck, i get kicked out of the game when i resume, since i loose connection
Haha. Good point!!!
Where is the link to the 3 pillars of accessibility? I can't find it.
I forgot. I’ll admit when I get home.
@@NerdNest No rush Bill!
its all in the description now. Thanks!
@@NerdNest Thank you Bill!
19:30 I just turned 34 and I'm aiming to see consoles. I am fortunate. I've been born with what some would call a ''disability'' learning some games would have a slight curve (withoragainstpeers) Having a bone deficiency. Having a short leg and long leg causes back fun stuff whilst growing; missing knee and thigh on left leg (amputee to prosthetic in 8th grade) and only a ''thumb***'' / palm amalgamation on my right hand again fortunate i could More than keep up win. the control. were addressed. were adjustable. as using my writing or taking my. nub hand off of buttons and stick to hit RB would me open or waist precious time also not very comfortable. But I didn't know any difference until rear adjustable model buttons became Sir dies at left hand is No, I'm feeling that role using rb and rt bound. to. the rear left buttons. which honestly is an absolute game changer like my steam deck and Xbox Series controllers or similar It's going to be very difficult to find something that has less configuration capabilities and ergonomics.
There are lots of games where you can pause when you're not playing multiplayer and you can't when you are. This is a paper tiger.
The gameplay was action rpg like recent final fantasy games, minus the ridiculous flying attacks. It’s awesome. Totally the best part of the game!
@@Zzshock77 haven't played those, so I can't compare them. But yeah, it was good on its own like I said, it just didn't fit the game for me (or maybe what I expected of it)
The game felt kind of like a mismatch of different game styles that didn't work for me.
Friends and I have been on Duck Game which is a hilarious Smash Bros like game.
Did I miss the live show you guys did? I remember seeing you were going to post it but I dont see it anywhere. I feel cheated
I’m waiting on the files.
Anbernic has deleted the 64GB versions of their updates, now the update (16GB only) it's completely devoid of roms and ports. However, it still has that Hotel California FLAC lol
now that Ambernic removed the 64gb image, does anyone know how to expand the 16GB image so we have space on the 64sb microSD?
Red for me and it's not even close.
I just deleted a rambling comment that didn't make sense. TLDR: Let's support devs making new games and emulators, especially when they are so cheap. Don't get mad at Russ for suggesting you spend $5 on PPSSPP when Taylor Swift tickets cost $1500 lol
Kingdoms of Amalur is HARD
I dont know much about modding, but elden ring is known for all the modding that goes on in the game, can you mod a pause into the game?
I will comment for engagement that I agree with Bill, give me a steam deck controller that’s just the deck with no screen. Steam deck is hands down my favorite controller
"The game doesn't need a pause button! Just git gud!"
You obviously don't have kids that need a diaper change RIGHT NOW!
Personally I hate that Anbernic preloads their devices, it cheapens and sours the experience and their brand.
I think that youtubers reviewing them as a bonus normalises it so that people think its ok, but its not...
What is your take on downloading music?
If you own the music (you bought it) download all you want.
Just the versions you bought in my opinion.
@@NerdNest definitely the most fair perspective then. I like you
anyone know that wallapper/background? looks sick!
It’s from nerd or die stream os
@@NerdNest awesome thanks!
Kingdoms of Amular came out at the worst time with Mass Effect 2 just released around it.
I live in Japan if you guys need help getting a controller.
10:55 original doom and doom 2 are too expensive on steam, especially given that you get them for free when buying doom 3 xD
Sssssh! Don't say that name out loud or you'll summon Ellen!
The "I like hard games so everyone should be forced to play them on hard mode" is such a weird take.
@@Whatsup_Abroad I don't think anyone was proposing forcing easy mode on anyone. The point is to provide options rather than forcing players into one lane.
I agree with FabuBrik
Not a fan of the philosophy that disagreeing with games press is an attack. Personally though, I think there should be a pause function if you are out of combat. If you could pause at any time, I don't see how that wouldn't kill the invasions gameplay. I still long for a Steam Controller that's pretty much a Deck without a screen.
Disagreeing with her is fine. But there were lots of people being malicious and terrible to her.
I don’t think the game world work with a pause option due to the online component and the world always running by design. Now, if someone wants to play offline and pause, let em do it.
Also I sold over a thousand 35XXs independently and i got returns over games that werent included
i was subbed to rich first out of all of yall lol first steam deck channel I found that i loved
Pause is a cheat in these games. In the middle of a boss fight you can just pause, regather yourself then resume in a calmer head space with more control. The intensity of having to continue the battle all the way through makes it that much more glorified
