Tug of War with sea lion spearfishing off Oregon Coast

- First time trying to put together an underwater video and still get in some spearfishing. My favorite things in life come from being in, on, and under the ocean. The ocean and kayaks spawned this channel and the beauty that youtubers like Daniel Mann and PNW Samson have brought to us with their professional videos will challenge me to also bring that kind of Oregon content to my channel. When I can't go diving, I view their footage and am memorized by the beauty of the swaying kelp and vibrant colors that the ocean depths display. I enjoy swimming through a school of barred perch or watching a Dungeness Crab scurry across the sandy bottom. Shooting a few fish for the barbeque is just an added bonus. The tug of war with the sea lion was more a huge relief that it wasn't a shark, although unnerving, it was just a good surge of adrenaline, and it swam off with a free snack. I think I did a good job showcasing Oregon's underwater beauty with a pretty good day of visibility for summertime. There wasn't the variety of fish around the reef but more videos to come will showcase better quality structure and marine life when I use the Hobie Outback to access the offshore possibilities. I'll take a sea lion over a Great White any day of the week!

Im glad you liked it. The real hero’s in my circle of divers are my boys and nephew and my brother. Once I got the kayak which was to be used for spearfishing I got more satisfaction out of just fishing from it. I don’t get out and dove like o thought I would back when I was in my twenties like my boys do. I was also inspired by watching PNW SAMSON TH-camr. His videos are amazing. Check him out.

You bet. Boy that was quite a day. I’ve noticed ever since that trip I kayak fish more than I dive. Mentally I think it messes with me more than I let on in the video. 😀

In Oregon can you spearfish while on scuba or does it have to be free diving? Great video! What a pain in the neck sea lions can be.
In Oregon you can spearfish both scuba and free diving. It’s kinda an untapped recreational activity unlike California and Florida but our winter weather and limited ocean friendly environment probably help to limit the crowds. Yes those pesky sea lions need to be thinned out by our ever growing white shark population.

That was a fun day. I enjoy fishing off the kayak in the ocean more than the diving. Lately the ocean has been too rough to do either activity.

@@yakventures9544 I was thinking that looked like Shoreacres. I’m just getting back into Diving after seven years it was a harrowing experience squeezing into my wetsuit. I’m gonna need to size up.
