I make music because I can’t stop making music. I’ve tried and it’s boring and sad. Particularly sad because having the gift of creating music going to waste, is a sad thing to do

A good friend of mine that I'd known since we were just toddlers committed suicide on New years day in 2020. He sent me an email containing a video and a message. It was tremendously heartbreaking, but one of the things that has been running through my mind ever since has been the last little bit that he directed to me specifically. He said basically that I should take some risks and do what I love with the chances that I have, then said "love you bro". Still breaks my heart. I don't want to get too in detail here but it was a rough time for everyone who knew him obviously.
While learning to cope and manage stress I ended up learning transcendental meditation and I've been cutting out bullshit and focusing more on what I love ever since, getting back to the root of things. I'm kinda a decade later getting into music than I'd like to be, but I owe it to my friend. There is clarity that comes when you face death. If you're reading this and you're 20 and you're broke and you have no direction, just know that you matter and that if there's something that you love -not because of what others think or because of expectations, but something that truly gives you joy, then face your fears and give yourself a chance.
Edit: oh and I lost focus on why I was writing this comment. I just wanted to say that my motivation is exactly the same as yours. I kept having a vision of myself on my deathbed looking back at my life and I knew that if I didn't give what I love the best shot that I can, that would be the thing I would regret. I don't want to be that old man looking back in regret.

When I’m making music, it’s the one time in the day I get the chance to feel “flow”. and that I’m making something I genuinely like. The act of MAKING music is the reason I make music. The making is the end, not the means. How do I know this? Because I don’t give two shits how many people hear what I release (I do not promote my music as I can’t be arsed!). What I do worry about is if I lose this flow, which in the last 14 months I’ve been able to find consistently.
Ask yourself this: if your DAW could produce a complete track at the push of a single button, and it was completely unique and sounded amazing and that’s all you had to do (push a single button), would you be happy with this style of “making music”? I doubt it. It’s the struggle, the creativity, the discovery … that makes it worth doing.

I’ve always loved music since I was 5. Didn’t have a desire to perform until the early 70s so I learned tenor saxophone to play in a big band someday. Well life had changes and I stopped playing but didn’t stop listening. I had a much better appreciation for what it took. In 2007 I decided enough was enough. I needed to play! Bought a guitar with one goal in mind. Learn a little fingerpicking and a few chords so I could amuse myself, no one else. My wife who was a good guitar player already said “bout time dude”. So we bought a few and started just having fun. Dream met! My wife passed away in 2018 and my doctor asked me one question: what do you enjoy doing the most. Answer: play music. Then do that! So now I play as often as possible, record, learned to mix to help me record better tracks, built out a home recording studio. I don’t have a desire to perform or release music, only play for my enjoyment. I have recorded a single and had other professionals add parts to it. It was a blast. My recordings will be for my kids and grandkids in hopes they will continue on their own musical journeys as they all play an instrument now. Life is short. Make more music while you can.

I make music because I'm passionate about it, because I feel sad and bored and simply not inspired enough to live my life when I'm unable to explore and experience music in a way that satisfies me. There are so few things that makes me feel like that in my life and, honestly, I think that none reaches the power that music making and sound in general has to me.

When you are actually faced with death (in my personal experience) you tend to look at all the things you did rather than what you didn’t. There isn’t a sense of regret for not having done but more one of gratitude for what you did. It’s a rather serene place rather than one of angst about what never occurred. Thank you for your interesting conversations.

Why make music? My answer is that I've always felt drawn to it. I was fascinated by the sound of analog synths as a child, still love it. Music has shown me a lot about myself, has helped in my personal development. I enjoy making music, and its SO satisfying when you finish a nice track. I agree 100% with the mortality thing.
I've lost my Mother and almost lost my Brother in the space of a year... makes you face up to death, but that's a good thing IMO!

I’m seeking music as an adventurer. My perspective started from 20th century blockbuster stage musicals as a teenager, progressed through musicianship and eventually standard broadcasting. I eventually traded for “kids” that handy syllable to represent decades of trying to build your dependents’ futures. Sure, it was my choice, and it was an investment. Now as a grandpa a few weeks ago I experienced my first granddaughter (who named me “Yata”) emerging from her nap, hearing my live ambient music stream and singing out “Muuuuuusiiiiiiic!!!” then running up to the screen, watching my graphics then proclaiming “Yata Music!” That’s in a world where 2-yr olds have the panoply of online music to bathe in, and it feels like my biggest satisfaction in music. But lifting this little girl up on my arm because she asked me to, to enjoy her beautiful innocent personality, is far more important to me. Wide perspective is very hard to obtain and it takes a very long time. And this doesn’t supplant my satisfaction in my music. It’s not an either/or choice it’s a both/and combination. I’m grateful I didn’t succeed at chasing music and nothing else.

Holy shit! This was literally like listening to myself talk. Although I have never had to wrestle with the topic of what I must do in this life, I sure as shit reflect on my own mortality now that I’m 67. Music has been my whole life. I started playing trombone in the 3rd grade and continued through high school. When I was 13 I picked up guitar and have not stopped playing to this day. I have played guitar in almost every style and setting you can imagine. Music is really all I think about. When I started producing it was just another experience that involved music and I’ve spent thousands of hours learning it, and every day I can’t wait to get back at it. Sadly, some people never discover what they must do, to others it was never even a question. Funny how that works.

I am in my early 40's and started making music in when I was about 15 with an Amiga and Protracker. Why do I do it? I was really impressed back in the late 80's and 90's of hearing sampled sounds coming out of a computer and then discovered the incredible Amiga Demo Scene.. and I just wanted to be able to do what they did. Later on I got more serious about music making.. and learning and experimenting etc.. you all know the drill.. But fast forward to now.. Thinking about it. I am in competition with myself. Each song I finish , I am working towards impressing myself. It makes me happy. Back in the 90's and mid 2000's I thought it was about impressing my friends. You figure out that they actually dont care. or downplay it in a way that is "oh well if you can do that.. it must be something that anyone can do".. discarding all of the unseen time and effort and experience you have and the nuance of shaping sounds. Dont make music for your friends, they wont understand.. and its not their fault.. Make it for you. Impress yourself. (oh and BTW.. They started to notice.. once I began singing.. "Oh who's the singer" .. lol)

I’m willing to be convinced otherwise, but I thoroughly believe this is the video all of your detractors will call to your attention when they wish to bash you again. It touches on so many philosophical and fundamental points that most people wish to ignore because of the patients required to climb the Mountain of abstracts, only to realize they must descend to a profoundness to reach resolution. In someway, shape or form, we’re all on a quest; The question has always been and will always be”Why Complete it?” Settling for answers that temporarily satisfy the psyche May achieve short-term success, but are an overall distortion of the greater picture. A lot of the videos on this channel are more about self than they are about making music, which truly is of the greatest importance, as it is essence which will determine one’s existence. Thanks for the video; hopefully we can all remember how necessary it is to step back from all of the fact gathering and instead focus on a concise answer concerning who we are, so that we can set about what to do and how to do it.

Because music moves me more than any creative medium. It's been there for me during the darkest times in my life. Nothing compares to creating something that didn't exist before you breathed life into it. It's a drug I can't live without. It's the one thing I know I'm good at and even if I never make a dime from it or amass a huge following I'll never stop doing it.

What people will regret in eternity is the fact that they could've believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and be in Heaven, but they knew that if they would believe on Him, it would mark them in the eyes of all the other people and out of fear and because of multitude of other excuses, they never believed on Him! Honestly this day and age of, "let's find a purpose for your existence in something that you can or might want to do", will turn out to be nothing but a satanic spiritual joke played on the people, when it is all over! The spiritual evolution of a soul unsaved is to burn forever, no matter how rich and rewarding his or her life was on this earth! This may not be what people want to hear or think about these days, but it is true nonetheless!

Honestly, from personal experience, I have been realizing that once the music happens, IT HAPPENS! I mean, if you can turn on the radio and hear music, there it is. The thing that could be standing in most of our ways IS this technological way of life some or most of us may be living in.
I stepped away from the computer today just to play my guitar and I played more music then I did all of last month trying to manipulate software with a mouse and a keyboard.
Getting in touch with our humanity comes first. No humanity, no music. It's just that simple. If we're not making music, we're not human. : )
And, if we don't want to make music, then being human is all we have left. Cheers.

I gave up a shot at a band "career" in my 20s. I stopped playing music for nearly 10 years. After a further 10 years of noodling, I realised music is "the one". I ask myself, if music was so important to me, why did I quit? I have no good answer. But I just know writing, playing, and listening to music does more for me spiritually (shudder) than any other thing. It doesn't matter what my energy levels are, I'll do it. I'm equally proud to know our music will be out there for a very long time, whether people listen to it or not.

I think I make music because whatever mental condition I have (OCD or ADHD or whatever it is) is so satiated by the trance-like state making music takes me to. I've had many other past times that give me that feeling but none as consistently or prolonged as just working on a beat for a few hours and letting my creativity just do whatever it likes. If anyone else enjoys my music then great, but I ultimately make it for myself. Recording it is never as satisfying as the time I'm just jamming out but it's cool. Just record it and move on. Cheers for the video!

About 9 years ago I gave up making music, I left it for 7 years, then 2 years ago I started again. I was so disappointed in myself for not seeing it through, knowing I hadn't explored my own music making abilities. I'm still learning, I'm still trying to find my sound, and recently I have been considering leaving it again because it does affect my emotional state so much when it isn't going well. Studies into the subject of "creative genius" seem to show a convergence of several traits and circumstances.
Higher than average intelligence (manifesting in talent) an ability to block out distractions and persistence in the face of detractors are common traits in successful artists.
But studies of geniuses reveal another component that really seems to make the difference. Death.
Those who suffer the loss of a parent, those with severe childhood illnesses, survivors of accidents, or anything else that teaches a child at an early stage that life can be short and brutal seems to trigger something in some people.
Perhaps it's the early realisation that "you're only here once, better get on with it" that allows them the necessary focus to be good at what they do.
Not only that, but they perhaps nurture the ability to take risks we ultimately have to take in order to succeed; both artistically and business-wise.
Fear of failure is diminished when the ultimate fear has already been confronted.
Sadly, the same attitude towards risk taking also extends to other behaviour that can ultimately shorten the lifespan of these anomalous, precious beings.
This may account for the long, bewildered list of successful artists and performers continuously lost to drugs, drink, sexual promiscuity, etc.
Anyway, downloaded any good VSTs recently?

The answer that I can give to why I create music is pretty simple it's the only thing that I felt that I can control it's the only thing that I feel that gives me the power that I crave it's the only thing that makes me genuinely feel happy within the three to four hours that I'm creating it's so rewarding from start to finish to have an idea like a topic for a song write the lyrics study what I've written record what didn't exist before but then at the end of the session I have something new I may not like it I may love it no matter what I always love the process.

When anyone approaches their studio/instruments/pedals/plugins etc I encourage the question to sit with you be "what am I curious about today?". It could be a certain combination of instruments, a certain chain direction of hardwiring, a plugin you've not yet used, whatever it is that you feel like you're discoving something along the way whilst you're being creative. One thing i realized and motivates me today is in order to fully experience music, my passion, i need a job that gives me good stability, and sustanibillity. I guess it depends on what do you expect, what currently is your situation, because in the end in your life if you get in a place where you can't experience it the way you wanted to, then you missed a step, it can always be fixed but you have to be objective about it.
I've been doing not enjoyable jobs and this is what motivates me to learn a new job that i can like, don't have to be passionate about it, but if all this time I've been able to do those crazy jobs, i think i will be fine with one that i can enjoy enough, and also pays better for me to not feel restricted for music. Everyone should try to plan this as much as they can, it's important!
Although I don't have to think much about why i've been droved to music in the first place and why i am doing it right now, because it always have been my calling, it might have a more specific answer for each one of us, but as long as you're fufilling your passion, i think it's enough, we as humans tend to overcomplicate things, so stay simple and honest with yourself.
If you kept pushing away your calling it will always come back to you so that you finally see it for what it is, and realize you can't escape it, so embrace it and live it for as long as you can!

Dude another great video , your so right , ‘music is it’s own reward’ another’s quote but so true , to play and record to allow that which has never before been expressed in this reality to flow through us is to connect in real time with the divine in all of its artistic forms, if we can then allow another soul to share our work in positive ways is to enrich all party’s concerned and changes our actual life path in timelines just because we took the time to create and listen and in doing so changed our imagination about the future 🔥❤️

    Oof, man that was deep.
Again, as a hobbyist piano/guitar player looking into making music I have a completely different motivation behind.
First off, as a software developer (which is my main job), my ultimate goal and the reason why I do this is written in my resume, right beneath my name: "Aiming at making everyday tools easier and more efficient to optimize our most important nonrenewable resource: time."
And I still have some stuff I really want to study and look into, couple more projects to go before I can say "ok, I'm done, I'm good here, if I die tomorrow, I can rest easy".
Music, on the other side, is my escape from the world of computers, from my main job.
It's a way to regain stamina, relax and put my mind at ease.
And, yeah, if you've been wondering, I'm one of those "DAWless" guys who refuse to use a computer to make music. When I want to play or make music, I want to stay away from PCs, tablets and smartphones, so dawless it is.
Thanks for the video, those are always a big source of reflection for me.

As a software developer myself, I have wondered how it is that the more time saving software (and other gadgets) we have, the less free time we seem to have. The more hurried and fast life becomes. Some weird paradox going on there, like we can't really cheat life and "save time". Take music as an example. It seems songs were written and recorded faster back in the 1950's and 1960s' than now. The time saving devices mean more is expected to be done in time available, perhaps.

For me it comes down to this,
What am I using the internet for?
Am I using the internet to a solve a problem? ie, how to export an audio file for sampling?
    OR
Am I using the internet to solve a problem? ie, Im bored and I dont want to work so I will justify it by watching endless educational videos.
Use the internet to find answers to actual questions/problems you have.
Use the internet actively not passively.
    Cheers!

I make music bc all my life I have wondered what music I would create. I have good ear and understand some theoretical things happening in songs even before I studied music. Also the “no regrets” idea. I am too old tosucceed (almost 40) but I dont even care. I enjoy making music and improving my skills. When I get bored or dont feel anything I will stop. If this moment ever comes who knows.

I guess lying on my deathbed someday and asking "what's this for?" isn't my approach, my approach for doing music is the loss of my parents and the fact, that everything in life somehow has a purpose.
I just met a girl, who takes me as I am, it's the first time in my life, I feel how she manages to feed me the energy to be myself and who really digs for what I've gone through.

This is something I’ve been going through recently. I think maybe someone else could relate to this. I think we tend to set this image of a ‚model musician’ in our heads to serve as some reference point to set goals and to have something to work towards. For me, this image was so misaligned with my ambitions, lifestyle, etc, I was constantly experiencing blocks, anxiety and I had zero confidence in even calling myself a musician despite being one for over 10 years. So what I did is I took a good look at every part of this image I had and asked myself if this is really coming from me or this is some bullshit that I’ve overheard or seen in some ‚helpful tip video’ and never gave it a thought. And it turns out that I threw out a lot of bullshit in the process that just didn’t work for me.

It gives me the feeling that I am here for a reason. Improvising and flow is one of the most delightful feeling I know. I agree that I want to leave behind music as a legacy when I die.
I would always make music no matter what, I do it to make myself happy first and foremost.
The question I have is, should I try making a living of this instead of keeping my comfy job.. Its a hard decision and not one to take lightly. But in the end, what am I doing with my life if I do not try it and give myself a chance. I just feel like I am not disciplined and prepared enough..
Thanks for your thought provoking content!

Thank you so much! My philosophy is to build a life that supports your music. A little side hustle is usually necessary in order to get the wheels turning. But taking a good hard look at your values might help re-org some of you life structures. A 9-5’er might allow for some luxuries but perhaps there is room to cut back and free up more time to spend on your craft. It takes time to build for sure. But little by little we can move more towards a life that supports what’s most important.

Too deep for me and overthinking it. I simply enjoy the process of making music. Stumbling on a patch for example that inspires me to create a great chord progression then melody. Simply enjoying the process of sitting down at the keys and jamming and recording simple ideas to develop at a later date.
Yes this is self indulgent but so what if it is something that gives you pleasure like any hobby. The cherry on the cake would be to get my music out there and develop a fan base and perhaps even the opportunity to collaborate and perform my creations live. But even if this doesn’t happen at least I had fun simply creating music.

I just found your videos the other day. You have an interesting outlook on music! Can I ask though, do you ever find that the dust covers on your gear at the back ever deter you from wanting to make music? I have dust covers for most of the gear in my studio too. Although I found that when the gear was 'out of sight, out of mind', I noticed myself using it a lot less, and sometimes not even making the effort to remove those dust covers.
