BGHA Transmission - Teardown Inspection - Acura MDX

  • This transmission was of an Acura MDX AWD that was locked up and wouldn't move. As we see here the issue that part of the problem was that a bushing from one of the shafts spunned out and failed to seal causing the clutch pack to burn. 3rd clutch is common for failing so that was expected. But why were they welded together? Well, the owner of the vehicle said he kept driving it even though it was "slipping" and drove it until it failed.

Whoah!!! Holy shit man. I've been working on rebuilding an MGHA transmission from a 1st gen MDX, and while it is my first time, I am absolutely blown away at your skill level. I kind of want to come work for you now.

Great Video. I have never seen the inside of a transmission and now I know why it cost money to have them serviced. All I can say is that you know what your doing. Amazed on how you know the name of all the parts. Keep up the good work.

I work at a local Honda dealer in the Houston area. Im one of the old school techs that still rebuild transmissions among other things. We saw problems like that due to soccer moms driving thru school zones for extended period of time we would see 2nd and 3rd gears burnt up but I have never seen gears fused together like that. Good video as always look forward to your trans videos

Another great video. Hiram, I'm having a problem rebuild it's a 06 Odyssey. The van won't run on D and D3 but it would run on D2, D1, and R. I did replaced all the O rings and I don't know what to do next. This is my 4th transmission to rebuild and this is my first time I'm having a problem with my rebuild. Thanks for passing your knowledge to all diy-er like me.

Hi Hiram, another excellent video, thanks man!
Recently I have some issues with my DPO (aka AL4) gearbox and I want to replace the oil of this "sealed for life" gearbox.
This type of transmission has the heat transfer unit build-in, so cooling tubes going to and from the gearbox, no oil tubes…
Any tips how to drain all 6 liters of oil?
Via the drain plug only 50% can be drained...
    Thanks, Marc

Hiram great video! I have a 2001 MDX with a bad trans and was wondering if (BAYA / BDGA / BGFA / BGHA / BVGA / BYBA / B7WA / MAYA / MFYA / MGFA / MGHA / MGSA / M7WA ) have the same parts as my as my 2001 MDX trans? There is a transmission bone yard near me and wanted to know what other vehicles could be used as donors for internals?

I have an 2001 mdx, it drives and then all gears go out. When you turn it off and wait 10 seconds, start it again and it moves. Could this be that pressure control needing screens cleaned? Haven't burnt it up, in fact it smells good. Thanks for the video

Hiram, It looks like my transmission is failing... got a P0730 and P0740 over the past couple months. It's slipping every now and then and also smacks into gear every once in a while. Should I get it rebuilt right away or is it ok if I wait until the car doesn't move anymore? Does it matter? I got a full rebuild price from a local tranny shop with new fiber and steel clutches, all new seals and screens, and torque converter. I guess the question is, will it cost me more if I wait? Thanks for all you do!

I could hear you talking just fine even with the compressor running. What I'm trying to say is with your fan running I bet you could be heard no troubles. It's got to be hot in that shop without any air moving. Run your fan man!!! Don't suffer. I'm, as always, amazed at how you can keep all of it together in your head. Those Japanese trans. look really complicated! You said it stinks, is it the kind of stink you get from a rear wheel drive differential? If it is, then I feel for ya man, I can't stomach that smell....

    • @purplexenno
      @purplexenno 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matt Doyle
This is somewhat of a trick question. Yes it can happen again, will it? depends on how you drive it after it's been fixed. The driver is usually the deciding factor in these things. Put in a transgo kit and rebuild and hope the driver has learned not to keep driving it after it starts slipping. (keep in mind that torque converters going south seems to be a common issue with the Japanese car manufacturers)

*RUN THAT EXHAUST FAN- THOSE FUMES ARE CARCENOGENIC*
*Thank you*, Hiram. Question: what is the *logic* behind, and the *justifying principle* of- anything (in this case a transmission) having *"internal filters and/or screens that can only be serviced with a teardown-rebuild"?*
Are these engineers *that confident* in their device performing well long enough to use this technology?
    Stupidly, yes.
Even with "Dealer grade" service maintenance performed- by the book- friction material and debris *_is_* going to restrict these screens, and whatever part is fed fluid next in the galley- is going to suffer.
It seems like it's extremely *planned* to breakdown.
What would be the consequence of leaving these screens/filters out- and just using an extra magnetic inline filter for added cleaning?
What about removing the "screen" part- and still use the "body" of it (to take up the room).
Put your exhaust fan on the other side of shop- and run a duct over & above to your work bench.
    *Thank you so much.*
