This channel could be 100% telling stories of the glory days of American Hot Rodding, and I’d be all-in. Freiburger has a natural gift of being able to tell a story in such a way that makes it feel like you’re chatting in the garage over an engine with some beers, but he’s also very thorough. When David tells a story, he seems just as geeked up about it now as he probably was back then.

Freiburger is in many ways the missing link of the Hot Rod anthology. He somehow connects all the old timer stories and informs that record where necessary. And of course continues to be hugely relevant up to today.

I had the pleasure of working as a production designer for Henry Winkler when he came up to Toronto to shoot a McdDonalds commercial back in the early late 1980's or 90's. I think it was one of the first commercial, if not the first, commercial that he had directed. and I found him to be a perfect gentleman and a really nice guy. A Fonz...er Fond memory.
That Bonneville station wagon tickles my tisim just right. Love these old boats that nobody bothered to save or preserve. Makes it so special when you do actually come across one. These big body pontiacs are my childhood on four wheels
I have two of the boxy wagons ('82 and '89 Olds Custom Cruisers), a '66 Biscayne wagon (owned since 1974) and a '95 Caprice wagon. Yesterday while filling the '95 with gas, a middle aged lady at the next pump said "boy that brings back memories".

Fast forward to about 20 years ago when you had the big article in HotRod magazine and it all came full circle. Great story!! Don’t feel bad about wrecking and pilfering all those old rigs. I remember that school break special very well. That scene where they wreck the Super Bee is very dramatic. I think ABC had "After School Specials" and CBS had "School Break Specials." Henry Winkler did get into directing after that; seems like when Tom Bergeron was host of "Hollywood Squares" Henry Winkler produced that as well. GREAT VIDEO!

I know exactly what you mean about muscle cars not really being that valuable back then. I bought a '69 Charger RT/SE 440, 4 speed, Dana 60 that had been sitting in a guy's back yard for several years. The engine was all apart and in the trunk, gave $350 for it. Put the engine together and got it driving. Sold it for $1800 and thought I did pretty well 😕 Here in Indiana we had the Trader paper and Wheels and Deals that we scoured for car deals!

Great story! The first car I fell in love with was an orange 70 Super Bee. I walked by it every day on the way to 9th grade. It never moved for years. The paint was slightly oxidized. It was perfect other than that.

Thank you for this video. I was a senior in high school when this special came out and was madly in love with the car in it. Something about how unique it looked from anything else. It always bothered me that it was destroyed for a show and I'm so glad to hear it actually wasn't. I so wanted a mopar but they were always out of my price range. My first car was a Dan Gurney W nose Cyclone Spoiler I got for $500. It got hit so I moved on to a '62 Thunderbird and then a '69 XL convertible. When this show came out, I was hell-bent to find a superbee. I joined the Air Force after graduation and was stationed in South Dakota. Wasn't able to find a Superbee though and soon I was off to Europe. I didn't come back to the states till the early 90s and by then they were very hard to find at any reasonable price. So, sadly I've never been able to have my dream car. 😞
Great story Dave! I'm your age, yeah finding old "hot rods" in the 80s was fairly easy. I was into Chevelles, had a couple 1967's, even 4 doors, front fenders would fit, etc. You end up with lots of usable parts, alternator brackets, little clips, motor mounts, window handles. LOL again love the stories, it's what happens when we become old timers :)

Very cool history on the cars & Fonzie David, thanks for sharing. Your 6 months older than me so when your talking about your car sales magazine I am thinking of what we had here in Arizona (Auto Trader). Damn I miss those days! Love your show man!
Wow! You brought back so many memories. I too would drive from Escondido, up to San Clemente so I could get different Recycler newspapers. Then look for mostly Mopars. Others too. I used to drive to every city in San Diego County looking for any Mopar in yards! Doing what they do on TV now, only in the early 80's. I bought up over 400 cars. Some pretty rare especially now. Ah, the good old days! Oh yeah, nice buying R/T Chargers, Challengers, roadrunners and 4 factory big block Darts w/ 4-spds, for $300-1500!

Thanks for the info on The Sundowner. That car was parked at Rick Head’s shop in Semi Valley in the early 2000s when I was there working on a project. At idle, it would have alternating compressor surge between the two turbos. It was cool to watch and so regular, you could set your watch to it

I purchased 4-5 a week, every week and that was the beginning of many automotive purchases for the next 40 years! You had your 70 Super Bee and I had a 72 El Camino 454 (aftermarket)!
Another awesome story and great photos! Thanks so much for sharing!
This was a really cool story. Thanks for sharing.
I So " LOVE " hearing his crazy stories ❤and memories. I´m glad he´s finally having his own youtube channel. He will becoming a legend soon (he already is but now everyone will be able to know him). Keep up the good work!
What a legendary story! That was unexpected. Cannot wait to see what's to come, David. Keep it up, please and thanks for sharing.
I could listen to you tell car and car adjacent stories for hours! Keep up the awesome content
What an awesome and cool story, Dave! That failed attempt at perving Heather though had me laughing!
This is the intake section of my garage...very cool story, I'm of that era, lots of hot cars around the streets in those days, lots of Mopar guys. Fonzie dressed you down, too funny!
Keep the stories coming man, no matter how random it seems to you. Thanks for sharing!
I love your in garage studio, I bet you could make an episode explaining how you came by all those treasures.
You have an unbelievable memory David, very impressive.
Great story, memories, great cars. If I had all the cars I swapped sold cut up bought, etc etc.
Out of them all I actually miss my 68 Plymouth Satellite, flawless body. Bought it for $50 in 83, transmission issue.
Grease times
Thanks for the info on The Sundowner. That car was parked at Rick Head’s shop in Semi Valley in the early 2000s when I was there working on a project. At idle, it would have alternating compressor surge between the two turbos. It was cool to watch and so regular, you could set your watch to it
Love the shirt. Firing order - Chevy. Blower has me wiping my bottom lip. 😂😂
Dude, that's a seriously awesome story! I remember those after skool specials, for sure.
I had a few cheap muscle car crash stories too but not this crazy, like who wouldn't want a pic of Heather at the time?!
What a great story! This is better than most big budget stuff on tv today. Great channel, keep it up!
David, great story! I love videos like this one. Keeps the history alive! 😊
Your super bee always reminded me of that after school special. I had no idea it was the same car. That's the whole reason I love the 1970 super Bee.
see this is why Freiburger is a legend, I remember the episode of roadkill where you mentioned Hardcastle & McCormick, and now this, man some people only dream of having such experiences!
You’re a great story teller. Thanks for sharing this one. And yes I looked it up. He was an Olympic high dive hopeful in the show.
Ounce again David well done. Keep it up. Whatever you do for content on this channel will be top notch... Top notch!!!
Man, I could listen to Dave's stories for hours!
you and i are about the same age freiburger and my first car (bought when i was 15) was a '68 road runner. that you guys were tearing into a couple of big block b bodies to prime vh warms my heart.
Man, this was fantastic to watch. Keep them coming David.
That was such a cool story man, I’m 48 and 30+years ago caught the last gasp of these muscle cars being for sale for cheap. I remember doing the parts swap boogie on many second GEN trans and Firebirds and even some mustangs.
