Those "roads" off the west gulf coast are consistent with the bottom of Lake Ontario (limestone sheet) I believe they are shallow fault lines in the surface rock layers

Is it a mere coincidence that one of the world's largest accumulations of hydrocarbons (US + Mexico + Colombia + Venezuela) has the Chixlub astrobleme at it center? Then there's the proximal, huge carbonate accumulation that is Florida. The extraterrestrial impact seems to have triggered mantle degassing on an epic scale.

What in fact are those lines off the coast of Florida anyway?

These days bathymetric soundings are acquired by echo sounding (multibeam sonar). The linear features probably represent ship tracks along which echo soundings have been acquired. The data along these tracks is gathered together and gridded to create a continuous raster with a constant cell size. In between the ship coverage, the grid might get filled in with low-resolution data. This data is not directly measured - it is inferred from variations in the gravitational field. Getting noisy, high-resolution, measured sonar data to marry with smooth, low-resolution, inferred gravitation data is difficult. The result is generally nasty to look at, especially when you use sun-shading to emphasise the noisy changes in slope. The GOM data is substantially better, but it is derived from 3D seismic surveys (itself a kind of sonar measurement) and the detail, coverage, and data processing are far superior. If you are interested in bathymetry then the GEBCO website is a good place to go exploring. www.gebco.net/
