  • For the first time in the history of SparkFun’s Autonomous Vehicle Competition (AVC), we’ll have a separate 1 pound plastic ants division. These are combat bots made mostly out of plastic (the intention is for competitors to 3D print their chassis). We have combat bot veteran, Jamie Leben, help explain the different types of bot weapons and chassis types as well as give us some tips for making them out of plastic.

So here is a list I made where I ranked all the weapons you could use on a Battlebot. This is my opinion and you can leave yours down below.
    8. Fire
    7. Hammer/Axe
    6. Grappler
    5. Pusher/Rammer
    4. Vertical Spinner
    3. Flipper/Lifter
    2. Drum Spinner
    1. Horizontal Spinner

      8. Fire (does almost nothing to most bots)
      7. Axe/hammer (waste of weight might aswell make a better wedge with more armor)
      6. Pusher/rammer (lame and boring)
      5. Fliper/lifter (can work and be cool but less practical than a spinner in most cases)
      4. Grappler (so high because of krave)
      3. Horizontal spinner (worse in almost every way to a vertical spinner in theory)
      2. Vertical spinner (I like them)
      1. Drum spinner (stores the most energy in the most compact and simple way because they can have the same kinetic energy as a vert without a massive diameter)

In my opinion adding fire to a grappling bot works decently well, also I think hammers are somewhat effective if you add either a decent wedge/armor kinda like beta.

Shouldn't you consider making your example plastic ants a bit more compact? They're bigger than my beetleweights.

Can someone confirm to me that AVC 2019 is cancelled? I read that it was but I don't know for sure.

Correct. After 10 years of AVC, we won't be having a 2019 competition. You can find more information at avc.sparkfun.com/

SparkFun Electronics This was my only other chance to see live robot combat because Robogames was cancelled too.

why there is no DRILL ?

Drills dont seem to really work. They are not much better than putting a pointy spear on your bot

because so far every bot that wanted to run a drill got rejected. Because they won't cause significant damage. How on earth that works when you have grab/crusher bots that use fire which also don't cause damage unless they ignite the wiring is beyond me.
Like really this is something that still makes me upset to this day because its such a simple theory and we had worse bots in practice. You make a bot that can grab and then you give it a drill with that it directly drills into the core of the enemy and delivers a instant knockout when it hits a vital part.
Wanna know a bot that pretty much had the same game plan but with fire instead? Complete control and what did we get from it? A great battle against bombshell.
So why is there no Drill? Because tournament host said so for dumb reasons.
