Welcome to Australia firstly. I'm glad you enjoyed Sydney. When you said you were getting headaches the first thing that sprang to mind was dehydration. On the hot days out here you need to drink lots of water (1 or 2 litres a day). The coffees and sugary drinks you were having don't hydrate your body. Oh and remember to get a hat.
As an older Australian who has done a fair bit of backpacking in my youth, which my son is now doing, staying at youth hostels is an easy way to meet up with people your age either to swap tales with or hang out with while traveling.
If you are ever unsure about anything in Australia or need some advice or recommendations (eg good places to eat, places to see) don't hesitate to go up to someone and ask. You'll find in 99.9% of cases people will go out of their way to help you (even if its the bus drivers or cafe workers, hell even the police are approachable). Safe travels and hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Australia.

Hi hello, Welcome to Australia. I will try to follow your videos while you are here. As an Australian and after having lived here ALL my life, I can tell you most assuredly that the tap water is TOTALLY fine to drink here in ANY major city in Australia. This is NOT a 3rd world country and our tap water is heavily measure and reported weekly. So you don't need to waste money on buying water every where you go. It's a scam. Even the water bubblers down at the local beaches have the same tap water which is totally fine to drink. You will see signs in those places that the water is NOT fine to drink. Get a good water Bottle (either aluminium or plastic flask and just top up everywhere you go! If you go into a shop for a coffee/cake they will top up your flask free of charge! Enjoy the country and I'll catch you later.
P.S. You can't judge a coffee if you are going to dump a whole lot of cream and sugar into it. Get a flat white or latte and then judge those. Having an iced coffee doesn't count!!! 🤯🤣

Hi, thank you for watching 😊 as someone from a third world country, I was raised to be VERY wary of tab water 😂 it was a bad habit that I need to get rid of tho - thank you for pointing it out.
That being said, coming from Vietnam and living in Seattle, my standards for coffee or super high 😅 I only drink iced/ hot latte with no extra milk or sugar, none of that watery iced coffee either. Sadly I couldn’t find any coffee places that made me go 🤯 in Sydney, but I did find some pretty good spots in Melbourne. Stay tuned 💕

Have fun. Jet lag is a real thing so that's probably why you were getting the headaches. Always drink plenty water when you're walking and stay away from that iced coffee, that stuff will just dehydrate you. Melbourne as you have probably found out can have four seasons in one day but it's a great place to visit.

The boutique malls in the middle of the city will always be very expensive because of high rent. The souvenir shops aren't much better but maybe worth a try. I think not having wifi with your accommodation is ridiculous and I'm sure it made food and shopping research in an unfamiliar place harder for you. I thought you did great in Sydney for less than 3 days. Melbourne will be much less interesting for scenery but maybe easier for shopping.

You dont really need to worry too much about sunburn in sydney, although its best to take precautions. What you do need to worry about though is getting your brain fried by the sun - which is easy to do if youre not careful. Those sugary cold drinks inhibit your body from processing fluids. Add that to a bit of over-exposure to the sun and you will really have a day or two ruined; heat exhaustion is pretty serious and it starts with a persistent headache, then leads to the worst headache, fatigue, and nauseau you will ever experience.
So if youre going to be out and about you should really wear a hat and not take in too much sugar. Wear sunscreen but remember that doesnt protect you from heat exhaustion.
We have a sun safety jingle that kids memorise at school - slip, slop, slap. Which is: slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, and slap on a hat.
Over my side of the country - western australia - just 10 minutes unprotected exposure to the sun can be enough to fry your skin and boil your brain. In WA i can get third degree burns in 15 minutes of unprotected exposure but in Sydney I can run around all day with no sunscreen and only get a mild sting (which is still not good). Same in Melbourne. But if you travel further north or west than those cities dont let those cities fool you into thinking the sun is not too dangerous. We have two ways that tourists mostly get themselves killed here - drowning and heat stroke. Please avoid both.
ps with sunscreen you should aim for a 50+ SPF for proper protection.
pps the area around the Rocks and Circular Quay is a tourist trap and the prices are high for food that is pretty average. You need to get away from those areas for good quality stuff. The further you go from the tourist trap areas (without ending up in the outer suburbs) the better the food tends to be, although there are some good places in Bondi and Manly - but you have to track them down.

You must get a wide brimmed hat whilst in Australia. Also I think you may be a little dehydrated. So also have a water to sip on all the time. The headache is caused by lack of water.

I’m happy you’re doing so much. You do have to take care in the heat, especially because you’re from a colder climate.
You’re getting a headache because you’re dehydrated. You need to drink more water and if needed electrolytes. Seeing you’re running around so much in the summer heat.
Please try and get away from the heavy tourists areas and speak with locals so you can really really experience Aussie openness and mentality.
Enjoy the rest of your stay.

With coffee, Sydney does play second fiddle to Melbourne. Melbourne is Australia's capital of coffee and started off espresso in a similar way to the way Seattle is the US's capital of coffee and started of espresso. To date, both Seattle and Melbourne are considered coffee capitals of the world and it's Australia's very early introduction to espresso and the way coffee is treated by consumers that meant that Seattle's Starbucks considers Australia one of the two hardest markets to succeed in.
Bottom line: Australians dislike chains, treat coffee as a social drink rather than pure caffeination (the US is well known for large+sweet+buy and run).
In terms of their histories, coffee started in both cities in the late 1800's with Melbourne having a 20 year head start on Seattle. It's the introduction of espresso in the 1920's in Melbourne with it taking off strong in the 50's, whereas Seattle really started it's journey into espresso much later.
The strong coffee culture in Melbourne is due to having one of the largest Italian migrant populations outside Italy.
I'd say the main difference between the two cities is that in Australia, small cafes (rather than chains), will sell most of the coffee. Sizes are smaller. Costs are lower. Less reliance on sugar (Starbucks does sweet well). Although takeaway coffee is common, most Australian given the time would prefer to sit in and take time.
But one rule of thumb..... if you don't do coffee well, you will fail.
McDonalds found this out a long time ago in Melbourne. McDonalds Australia developed a concept called '"McCafe" back in 1993. It was initially only in Melbourne, before expanding to Sydney and other McDonalds in Australia. Just over a decade later, McDonalds tried McCafe expansion in Chicago. The rest is history.
A perfect way to illustrate coffee culture and how it's run in Australia is one one store called Single O in Sydney.
As is common, Single O is a roaster and has close ties with coffee farmers places as far and wide as Kenya to Costa Rica. The key is to import fresh, high quality beans and treat them with care. They are test roasted, the coffee is cupped (i.e. they vary the roast, grind and do taste testing until settings are correct). Then it's finally able to be given to the consumer.
All of this effort was for 2 shops only..... until one of the barista moved back to Japan.
In collaboration, he opened a roaster in Tokyo but not before carefully sampling water from various regions in Tokyo to match the pH level of the water used in Sydney (so roasting results could match as closely as possible). Today Single O has 2 locations in Tokyo, 2 in Sydney and selling roasted beans to cafe's throughout Asia and Australia.
4 locations is hardly Starbucks's 38,000+ cafes. But that is completely the point.
