making the external battery as a grip would be a very clean build

Everyone dandy until the the wire gets unplugged. If you can put a small lipo batt inside as a buffer, that would let the camera survive short duration disconnects. You can salvage those small boards from single-cell USB power banks I suppose. Wore the external wire to that board. And that board powers the step-up converter.
