Hi Andy I take it it was raining when youmdid the video just like here in Scotland. I love watching you make your items and how you explain everything to us of what you are doing and why. I really like the helmeted man he looks lovely and the wood is great it's got nice grain and when you buff it up at the end it's shines up lovely. Yes.. I'm afraid that it was raining... I think that we both have our fair share of rain...
I was watching the news and they were describing an area in the UK and how it qualifies for being classed as temperate rainforest...it was the amount of moss, ferns etc growing on the bark of the trees...
Anyway... not more than 100 metres from my house by the river are the exact same trees and growth...
So no wonder that it's always raining.. I'm living in a rainforest... Haha...

Another fun turning,may have a go at one this afternoon.we’ve just had three days without power,phone,or internet, due to cyclone Gabriel,it’s torn up the north island badly.we have a lot of slips road closures due to subsidence but we are still here.thanks for the video,better go warm up the lathe

I made a gonk that looks like that, but I drilled two holes opposite on the hat and turned two pointed white dowel to look like horns on a Viking.

I believe Carl Jacobson has done an umbrella once or twice. And yes, we need some female gonks and other female critters! I think I have seen gonks with braids in the past.

Great project Andy. He kind of reminded me of the cartoon character, Marvin the Martian. And the flower really added to the project and looks great. I cannot wait until the weather warms up so I can get out to my shop and start turning again. You have given me so many great ideas with all of the little critters you have turned.

Yes... just make sure that it is sharp... treat it like a scraper... I tend to hold it horizontal to the wood..
The beauty of the mortice chisel is that they are made very strong...
Keep the toolrest close to the wood because you havn't got much length in the chisel...

If I had to criticize anything about this it would be choice of glue. Super Glue is a poor choice when gluing wood together if you want a permanent bond. It will break down and dry out over time and let go. Use a quality wood glue or epoxy for a lifetime bond for wood projects.

I only used the ca glue for convenience.. in future I will mention this and recommend wood glue...
Having said that.. don't underestimate ca glue... I fitted my kitchen 20 years ago and used ca on the cornices and pelmets... when I fitted a new kitchen and ripped out the old one last year the wood broke before the joint gave way...
