One thing that I would really love to go away is this trend (that has been happening for a while) of using books merely for decor -- especially if they have stuff on top of them. I'm not taking all that stuff from there just to open a coffee table book! Also, what if water from vases seep into books?
Yes! Nothing wrong with a pretty stack of books on the coffee or end table. But they should be accessible and something you as the homeowner actually enjoy and read! I keep my pretty houseplant books and a art book out in a pretty stack because I use them a lot.
I agree! I think my worst pet peeve with the books is when someone takes a beautiful old book and rips the cover and back off for “decor” of the inner book. 😢😡 Or cuts up the pages for decoupage. And comments r like, oh you’re so talented and it’s such a great idea. 😣
For the longest time I couldn’t figure out just why people put 10 pillows on their bed when they have to put them away to actually use the bed!! Thank you for saying it out loud and validating my feelings 😂
Having a shower stool when you don't have a ledge for your tub (I think those freestanding tubs are really silly and a trend that will die) is actually handy. I also think paying $150 for a nice teak stool when you don't have a built in bench for your shower (and most showers really shouldn't have them because they take up a lot of space, drive up the cost of construction and allow water to pool) is handy for shaving legs or for keeping some of your products on there.
I couldn't agree more. The freestanding tubs next to a wall are the biggest dirt-trap I've seen in my life and to top it off there is no place to put your stuff like towel, glass of wine, book, soap etc. They look very pretty but they are about as impractical as tubs come. Give me a beautiful built-in with a shelf and minimal cleaning.
After having major abdominal surgery this past spring (I'm recovering well, thank you), I needed a shower stool in order to wash myself. I bought a very basic medical stool, not at all attractive but sturdy, waterproof and cheap. Turns out, I love having it, even though I no longer need it. Sitting while shaving legs is wonderful. I can put it next to the tub to hold a few things when I take a bath. If I'm tired, I can use it for a night time shower. Saying that, not just any stool will work. It needs to be 100% waterproof, have non-slip feet, and not give you splinters if you sit on it. Wood, even teak, won't stand up well to constant wetting and drying out - it will look bad (and raise splinters) well before it fails completely. My humble medical stool won't do any of these.
I don’t think accent walls are bad-I think they’re great when done well. I’m a big fan of color and texture in a space. I think they can add dimensionality into a room, and there are so many ways to make accent walls, from very expensive to very affordable. I think the problem with accent walls when everyone chooses to do the exact same thing as everyone else.
Color and texture is great! Only committing to one wall makes it very jarring and unbalanced, heavy on one side. If you're gonna Limewash, or wainscot, or paint, do it for all the walls!
I will defend my accent wall to the death! I have an open concept living/dining room that's one long rectangle. One end of the rectangle is essentially dead space due to the placement of the entrance to the kitchen. I can only put storage pieces there. Painting the wall a darker color visually foreshortens the room and helps integrate the dead space with the rest of the room.
@@12345678abracadabra Not everyone owns, and it's easier to put back a rented space as it was if you just did one wall. It *can* make a space look unbalanced, but I don't agree it *necessarily* does so.
I have an unintentional accent wall in one bedroom. I repainted and barely had enough paint to do 3 walls in the room, so I left the darker color on the window wall alone. I was trying to refresh the room without spending money, using paints I already had. I'm wondering if I just painted the "accent wall" a lighter color, so it wouldn't be such a big contrast, maybe that would make it look better.
Totally and you should decorate how you want to decorate. If you are a person who wants to change to follow every trend and have your home look like every influencer home on here, go for it. If you dont care about "dated" or "trends" and love your fuschia accent wall, keep it! Your home should be filled with things you love, not what other people love or tell you that you should love or hate.
Same! I often have a colour I really want but you get the worry that doing all four walls in it would be too dark - so having one accent wall and the others in a close-to-white colour is perfect! I've never done all the other walls white though, that's a bit jarring - off-white in a tint close to the accent is the way to go :)
The only one I somewhat disagree with is the accent wall. Obviously, it looks tacky if it's some cheesy color like fuchsia or lime green, but I think if you choose a beautiful sophisticated shade that works with your overall color scheme, it can visually pull things together and look quite good. I'm thinking of doing a very small accent wall for this very reason.
Agreed. An accent wall can be especially helpful in an open concept space to define the spaces visually. It doesn't have to be high- contrast to be effective.
So unpopular opinion - but I like a well done accent wall. Sometimes I think they look really good, and can add to the space. All white walls can get boring. Same with all green walls, or all blue walls. Painting your room black can get too dark, but sometimes painting just a piece of the room works.
An accent wall uses contrast to solve a design problem. TH-cam decorators give a lot of bad advice and Nick is no acceptation to that rule. He tells his audience they don't "need" an accent wall and he has never seen their space. He doesn't know. Also like most decorators of no particular fame or fortune, he is a one trick pony. He can give you his look and nothing else. So you had better like his apartment a lot. I don't. There is nothing special about it.
I agree! I really like the accent. I get what Nick was saying, BUT I think a whole room being a strong color or wallpapered would be overwhelming for me. So I love an accent wall for me.
I live in a 50s ranch and only have two complete walls, one in the living room and one on the opposite side of the house in the dining room. You better believe I painted them an accent (and different) color!
If it's a stool in the shower and you're a person who likes to shave their legs then it's actually extremely useful for putting your foot on as you shave.
I was going to say the same thing. We recently moved into a new home and I had to look for a stool to put in the corner of the shower just so that I could shave my legs. Maybe guys don't understand this?
well, I still think z little nook in the wall, which you can also use to put you soap etc on would be the enter option for me than a (wooden) stool, that won't do well with the water...
@@lithopheliax61x5 While I agree that wood is not the best material of choice (I'd go for a sturdy plastic that's actually feasible to clean), a mere nook on the wall doesn't cut it for shaving legs. The height is usually wrong, you'd have other objects in there, and it eliminates the possibility of seating (which some people might need for a number of reasons). If the stool is not an option and the person owns and wants to renovate, I'd suggest a built-in seat on one side of the shower box, for example
I think a stool near a bathtub can be so handy and looks cute. Accent walls done correctly, can add a lovely focal point to a room. We recently placed a small table lamp in our kitchen as it works great as a night light. All the rest, I completely agree with.
I think the stool in the shower is definitely more for people who shave. We got a new house, and I noticed that most of the new showers don't have a ledge to prop your leg up and shave. Very difficult to do without a stool or something built in to safely put your leg up on.
Exactly! Plus, as an older woman (OK let's say it. I'm just old) that balance is very important. Plus, sitting on a stool while letting the hot shower water run across my shoulders and back is very soothing. I don't do that often but I definitely need a way to shave without sprawling.
@@rachelw1076 in colleged the dorm showers didn't have a ledge so i'd sort of hoist my leg to the wall. one day i smashed between my pinky toe and next toe right into the metal door handle thing and was bleeding all over. being a college kid i didn't even have bandaids or anything and couldn't call a friend because i was totally nude. i think we had one bandaid in a welcome package i ended up using xD
I bought a 3 legged plastic shower stool for aging in place a few years ago. Although we don't have any disabilities that require it, at our ages we know at any time things could change. These days it is helpful for my husband who is having some foot pain. I looked into those teak benches and felt that was just too much and I didn't need something else to keep clean.
Teal last beautifully for ages. We have 2 Teak mats, one in a shower and one at the front door outside. The amount of grubby stuff that accumulates under it when I sweep is astounding. I'm thankful it's not being tracked inside! The one in the shower has never molded, even after 20 years. Of course it gets cleaned, but so far, never needed bleach.
I like an accent wall- especially a terra cotta wall to relieve and give a boost to the boring beige rest of the room. I liked it in the sixties and the eighties and the 2020s. An accent wall gives a bit of boost to an otherwise bland room. Really- most rooms in most houses are boring bland with too much safe beige (I love beige).
And why not? Terracotta is a gorgeous colour that compliments beige. I actually have my bedroom painted 'cafe au lait' aka 'beige' but affixed some tree silhouette decals to the walls. Very dramatic they are. Quite a talking point.
I like an accent wall too. Especially when you can paint it over as soon as you get tired of the colour/style/geometric designs. It's one of the most reversible trends out there, that's why I consider it safe.
Everything? I know it can be effective but the whole room in terracotta.... OTT imo. Good job we all have different tastes... which keeps Nick in his job!
Thank you, Nick, for slapping us back to reality. No matter what all these influencers say, we should trust our gut (and you) to know what looks good and what looks ridiculous.
I remember in the 80’s rag rolling and sponge painting was popular. She did every single room in a different color. It was so tacky. Almost everyone I knew back then had at least one room done like that. I try to stay away from trends and do what I want. That way my house doesn’t look just like my neighbors.
…. a milking stool, and you live in the suburbs…. You are relieving so many of us from pressurized consumption. Looking at Jackie Kennedy’s summer houses. There is a smaller one, she and Jack bought at Hyannis Port in the fifties. The living room has a sofa, a smallish coffee table, super low chairs with super low tables, big pillow on the floor. So understated. A message is also that she never changed things. If an upholstery wore out, she reupholstered with the same fabric. Somehow, I love that.
I do really like how you think out everything going into a space but your minimalist slip is showing. Bath stools can be extremely practical as well as providing a softening visual break between the top of the tub and the floor. Bathrooms can benefit from softening elements as they are by nature rather sterile environments. Great vlog, thx.
I like the stools. While you are sitting in the bathtub you can easily reach for items without having to stand up. It’s a cute way to put a little flexible table next to the tub. Other than that, I get why you listed the other items. I love your videos. So well done. So clear. Always several examples with pictures. Your voice is easy to listen to and you are personable. So good.
We are remodeling our primary bath and I want a free standing tub but concerned about having a spot to put stuff on when in the bath. Everyone uses stools or some kind on small table. Are there any other options? Thx
@@donjaknow8591we have a small glass shelf on the wall behind the tub, it’s a bit awkward to reach from the tub, but good for storing things on. The tub has a small flat section on the edge that we can put things on whilst bathing.
@@donjaknow8591 I don't think there's anything wrong with using a stool to hold what you need. Sometimes function overrides what's either current or dated. If you need it, you need it!
Keep in mind, even though he’s saying accent walls can be unnecessary, he’s not saying they’re bad. Not everything on the internet will apply to everyone. He’s just trying to help people not get too involved with trends and constantly make unnecessary changes to their home. He even has a navy wall in his background to separate the dining area/ hallway from the rest of the space which can be helpful in an open concept. He’s simply saying that you shouldn’t do it if it doesn’t serve a design purpose.
I agree except for the stool in the bathroom. I use it to sit on when bathing the kids, I use it as an end table to set things on when taking a bath, I use it as a stepping stool if I need to reach higher, I use it for many things. Stools are useful
I have low blood pressure and can't stand still for a long period of time, the stool (or even better a proper chair, but a stool will do for lack of space) is extremely useful as I can sit while getting dressed. If I can't have a bathtub then some kind of (reasonably waterproof) seating in the shower is great too. It had never occurred to me that these were used mainly for decor and weren't actually used by others. I agree it's silly to have them if you won't use them :)
Because I respect you, I take all of this advice as "don't feel you have to do this just because it's a trend - do what works for you." As a disabled person who needs a shower stool and 9 pillows to get her body comfortable at night, imma do what I gotta do :P My husband has always had an issue with decor for decor's sake. I'm not talking about hanging pictures, but things like a stack of books and vases, "guest" soaps, bowls of balls, etc. A bathroom seat is a useful thing, an uncomfortable tool piled with stuff you don't need in a bathroom is ridiculous.
Nick what you don't understand is some of us Retreat into the bathtub for safety. We need a nice cool beverage, probably our phones and places to put our glasses while we lounge and recover. Haha.
I love how you say you don't need this or that, but it you love it and have space then go for it. So many designers give the impression you need to do this or that and stick with trends, so it's a breath of fresh air to hear a professional say "if you love it, go for it" whole also not pressuring anyone to feel like they are lacking if they don't want something
I think you're great and I watch all of your videos. I can't help myself, I have to put this out there... Am I the only one who is reminded of the Church Lady on SNL (Dana Carvey) when I listen to Nick? I say that with true affection. Once you hear it you can't unhear it. 😂
LOVE THESE! I think a lot of us needed that accent wall talk. I grew up during the peak popularity so it’s engrained in my brain. Thank you for deinfluencing me! 👏👏👏
I'm a big lover of the accent wall but I do it with paint colors. I use accent walls to create a flow between the spaces in my largely open concept common spaces in my house. It was my personal choice but my paint choices make me smile every time I look at time.
Our bedrooms have accent walls and that hue is repeated in the space for cohesion. The 4 bedrooms have their own colour, 3 primary and one secondary. The trick is in the degree of saturation and in our home the colours are deep rather than bright. I enjoy colour and the bedroom isn't a public space like the loungeroom. So in a nutshell, no one needs an accent wall but l like them 🙂
Agree with all except a stool in the bathroom. Older folks can benefit from having a stool in the shower, for instance, or having someplace to sit in the room. Also having a place to sit while shaving one's legs.❤
really not sure why people are so bitter about you saying this lol. he did put in a little note underneath, but it's not hard to miss. you are absolutely right!
Would you call your navy wall in the background an accent wall? Why or why not? I have an accent wall in my living room, i live in an open mcm home, and it's hard to know where to start and stop with paint when you want to one room to have a different wall color. I think some style homes can handle an accent wall. MCM design often features an accent wall. Totally agree with the aggressive wall moldings though.
I agree, agree, agree with you on this. When I look at someon'es design in a room I think 1) is it really functional 2) how difficult is it to clean and maintain. All the vignettes (stools w/stuff on them in the bathrooms, cutesies on shelves especially in the bath & kitchen, around the sink getting water splashes, and stuff next to the cooktops getting greasy & dusty) I see require so much dusting and cleaning that the cuteness just isn't enough. And they ARE cute! 1 & 2 eliminate about 90% of what I see designers doing. I do love the look of the wood piece accent walls, but I would paint them the same color as the room (the texture is enough) and be aware that any line that is not vertical will be a dust collecter. That is A LOT of dusting to be done! I guess you can tell I don't have a maid LOL! Thanks again for your video, Nick!
ok yes, an accent wall isnt totally necessary. no visual design element is necessary. but accent walls arent bad. you have one behind you, as well. sometimes having the whole room one color can feel overwhelming or boring depending on the color. maybe someone doesnt want every wall burnt cienna but they still want to add some warmth. its a nice way to create dimension or texture to an otherwise flat surface. with any trend, dont feel like you need to hop on the train. do things because you think it works for you and its what you like
I agree totally on the little stool by the tub, except with a claw-foot tub, there is no place to place a beverage or a candle or maybe your towel or whatever...then I think it is handy.
I'm currently renovating my soon to be home. Your content is so helpful. It makes the process easier and it is helping me not to overthink the interior design aspect of it. For me the pillowpile on the bed is just unnecessary clutter and extra work... Can't fathom how some people have time for it.
Some of these I do, some I don’t! 1) stool in the bathroom - mine is from IMEA and is plastic. I use it to prop my feet up when I’m on the toilet, to sit on when shaving my legs or to put stuff on that doesn’t have a space in the bathroom but shouldn’t be on the floor. 2) pillows on beds and sofas - my bed has four pillows of various firmness. Two are great when I side sleep. Two are great for back sleeping. I have some others that are mainly for when I’m sat in the floor in my bedroom. They usually live on my bed but I don’t use them on the bed 3) accent wall - I’m waiting for another half a year before I do my accent wall. It’ll be a wallpaper scene with birds and colour. But then again I’ll also be painting the white walls the same colour as the main colour of the wallpaper when I get round to it.
I don't care what year it is or how old I get, I love those edison lightbulbs over a patio. It seems so warm and inviting and I think it makes me think of the film Big Fish.
Sorry but I love accent walls and don’t find them dated at all. Besides, I’m already tired of every trend being “dated” a year later. Social media is absurd with this nonsense.
You are so right about the excessive pillows. How are you supposed to sit on a sofa when there are six pillows and no place for you to actually sit? I used to have lots of pillows on my bed also - now I have the pillows we sleep on covered by two pillow shams each. All white - lovely to me. Love your videos😀
"Do you need a milking stool in your bathroom ?" And other questions you never thought you'd need to answer ..lol. I have just redecorated an accent wall with wallpaper ,for the simple reason that I fell in love with a rather dark and dramatic paper that would overwhelm my small Livingroom if used on all 4 walls ,but looks (imo) pretty stunning as a backdrop for a couple of bookcases and a desk .I'm just going to go ahead and say that the oversized lighting looks rather as if the mother ship is coming in for a landing on the dining table .They really do give me close encounter vibes .
I just always saw the stools as an answer to having no place to put products, a drink, your phone, book, etc within reach of a stand-alone tub. It's like an end table next to the tub. It seems practical.
I love small lamps, the tinier the more I love it. I have one on my kitchen counter. It is a bar raised above the counter and sink. Tried to send a picture of it but no option. I use it more than the overhead lighting which is too bright. I am in an apartment so no chance of updating overhead lighting. Love my tiny place with tiny lamps..its one hundred percent me.❤
I also live in an apartment. I have a little lamp on top of my microwave to improve the dim lighting in my kitchen. I would not have it taking up my very precious counter space though.
I am glad that you were NOT talking about accessibility stools and chairs in the bathroom. That is the one thing on my wish list to get, but, being in a condo, we have a couple of special assessments coming up, so those come first. Tie between electrician +Dishwasher/ shower seat for next in importance. I agree that smaller spaces are not conducive to curved furniture or oversized lighting. As for pillows, there are some medical conditions where a person literally needs 20 pillows on the bed, as the chronic pain can move to different places on the body, and there's a pillow(s) for each spot the pain sits.
I definitely understand the point of misplaced or wacky painted or textured accent walls. But they're certainly useful in the right set up. And they work a lot better if they're integrated into the color scheme. Like a warm natured toned room and your beige walls and dark wood furniture were accented by a sage green accent wall.
That was good. I felt bad for my different colored wall (which I never thought as accent wall). But I love the color and it would be too much all over😢
I enjoy your videos. Straight and to the point with very useful analysis. My go-to. Love the editing where you show many examples of what you're referring to.
Absolutely LOVE your title, DE-influencing. A chemical and mold issue banished us overnight from our home of 16 years and all the stuff (some from 4 generations). It took years to sort through what went into huge storage units, clean what could be, grieve the loss. I am a MASTER at decluttering, minimizing, grieving sentimentality, and all elements of separating from one's stuff. Life with a minimum of stuff is so much cleaner, simpler and leaves more time for LIFE!
Love your channel, Nick! I need about 6 feather pillows to feel comfortable. I love making my bed a nest and propping myself up while reading. I even carry my down pillows from my bed to my sofa to watch tv. I also am guilty of a mini lamp in my kitchen with a 15w soft bulb but I do love to have it on at night like a nightlight. Love the deinfluencing content.
Bathroom stools, you don't need them unless you need them. They are pretty useful if you don't have a ledge to help reach your legs and feet for cleaning, cutting nails or shaving.
There's nothing wrong with an accent wall. It can be useful if you're trying to create a focal point in a room with none but, like with all things, context and understanding what you're doing is key.
I'm gonna come out in defense of accent walls in specific situations, as long as they're not random. Let's say you live in the subtropics (like me) and apartments are...maybe not what Americans are used to, and despite your best efforts one might get 'wall cancer' (when the paint bubbles and flakes due to humidity, especially if you are trying to be environmentally friendly and not using an a/c that much). It's easier to fix up and repaint a white wall, but getting more paint for an accent wall...well, you'd better hope they still make the same color or that you saved the info for that color (in our case, the name was not enough as Nippon Paint had changed all the names!) So you do one wall, because you can maintain that, but not every wall. Or let's say you rent and you can imagine repainting one wall when you move out but would prefer not to repaint every wall. Not everyone owns, but that doesn't necessarily mean they want all white, if they can get permission to do something to a single wall. The same is true for wallpaper, even peel and stick. If you're renting, it's a lot easier to tear down one wall of peel-n-stick but not a lot of fun to take it down on every wall (and then wash them to remove any lingering adhesive or repaint areas where the adhesive took off paint). As long as your colored wall is your focal point wall, I really don't see a problem with this. I guess it's dated, but if you like it, who cares? I don't care for all the weird extra molding though. It looks like more skinny surfaces to have to dust. I'll also defend stools if they're used for an actual purpose, e.g. next to the bath as a place to put a glass of water or tea, or burn a nice candle, or keep your face mask for when you're ready to put it on. Or if it's in the shower, it can help if you don't have a product shelf -- not everyone has tile that those suction cups will stick to and plastic storage looks cheap -- and some people use them to shave legs. Ever tried shaving your legs in the shower without something to hoist the leg you're working on up? It's a massive pain, especially if you have product in your hair or want to keep your hair dry (not everyone washes hair, or should wash hair, every day -- but leg shaving without a stool or other apparatus is a great way to get wet hair).
CONFUSED! Don't you have a gorgeous dark wall in the background with molding, molding on the white wall, and wood on the walls of the kitchen?? Seems VERY accent walls to me?? I want to add these things to some of my walls to give my home a more custom look, but dang, you have me questioning now.
It’s your house, if you think it will make your house more you and increase your enjoyment of it, you should do it, regardless of whether others like it
So true on the pillow issue on the bed. I’ve never been one to have more than two pillows or three on my bed, but some people I mean you can’t even see the bed the cover the entire bed definitely takes about an hour to take them off.
I have a small teak stool next to my bathtub. My apartment's tub doesn't have deep enough edges for a bath tray so I use it to hold a glass of wine (or hot tea) candle and body wash during my bubble baths.
Stools beside the shower is usefull for the elderly that need to sit to dress and dry their legs (I actually recommand chairs regularly at my job). Or if you have kids in the bath. But not if it’s a candle holder 😂
Love the anti influence! 😄❤️ And I got to add.. As a painter I applaud this approach to ✨The Accent Wall✨. 😁 If you have a lot of paintings, wall decor, etc (and you're not a maximalist) I usually don't recommend an accent wall. If you wallpaper an accent wall; consider picking a color from that wallpaper for the rest of the walls. And if you'd rather paint, complementary colors usually look amazing. If you're not super bold with color it still works very muted (same color but with "more white", if using the NSC chart). Here in Sweden we usually wallpaper everything, so that's my personal preference, but color _can_ look so good! It's worth putting a little time and love into and not just "lime green, so they'll think you're interesting". 😂👌🏻
I use two tiny lamps in my kitchen and not a large one. The way I accented a bedroom wall is with a picture gallery. This is a must have for me regardless of trends or "need". Otherwise I agree with these comments.
I like Nick Lewis because he isn't in the business of pushing trends for their own sake. As far as I know, the vast majority of rooms are rectangular LOL. And when it comes to influencers and what we "need," we don't "need" any of it. Most trends are as much determined by what manufacturers and stores want to sell as by consumers. Trends are all about endless consumption, whether it is in furniture or clothes styles. Aesthetics and practicality, though, are timeless and equal good design. If you like something that works well in your home and you can afford it, buy it; if not, don't. Influencers are too often nothing more than pushers of their own tastes.
I just watched a fascinating video on the European pillow system. Tons of pillows! But they all had a purpose for supporting you - while reading in bed for instance. Seemed very wonderful and luxurious. I use my big pillows for reading upright in bed and smaller pillows to support my neck and lower back.
i have a curved sofa in my apartment and you are so right about everything you said! you lose so much space on the curves and the curves make some parts of the sofa less comfortable to sit on. and it is impossible to nap on (but i'm not much of a napper). it's still gorgeous to me as i really love the art deco vibe of it but i wish i had thought of these pros and cons before going in on it years ago. great video as always.
Stools are pretty much non-negotiable for Japanese bath rooms (as in the room which is the bath/shower), as in Japan, people often wash while sitting before getting into the tub. I've got one. It's also very useful for shaving legs or if I'm just really, really tired and want to sit during a shower. Which is definitely a thing as I get older and it has been a long day.
I’ve lived in Japan for 15 years and do not have a stool in my bath/shower room. I don’t feel a need to sit down while showering, nor do I want something else to have to scrub!
@@KnittyElf Sure, and I've been here 16. There are plenty of things I do "the American way," but my comment was referencing the cultural view as a whole. There's a reason why if you go to Nitori or Cainz or whatever, they have an entire section of bathroom stools.
@@nippolitica I would argue they’re not as “non-negotiable” here as you say, though. Maybe it’s because I live in Tokyo, but no one whose apartment I’ve been to has a stool in their shower, and my husband has also never expressed interest in buying one either, thankfully. My in-laws in the countryside do have one, though.
@@KnittyElf That's a fair nuance. I lived in Tokyo for two years, but have mostly lived in suburban or rural areas. I currently live in a machi a few hours commute from Tokyo. Okay, I'll amend. "As always, Tokyo is an exception." I really do recommend that stool when your knees start to go as mine finally have. Unless you like sitting directly on the floor of the shower or shaving in the bathtub (not my thing).
so appreciate you clarifying/acknowledging stools for accessibility reasons!!! I totally recommend investing in a bamboo shower and bathroom bench if you need one, much nicer on the eye compared to the typical plastic shower seats. I have POTS and am prone to fainting so sitting while I shower and dry my hair is necessity!
I decided that I was done with pillows other than the ones I use to sleep. however with that said, what I have done is I bought one of those long rectangle body pillows and put a pretty pillowcase on it and I use it as my decorative pillow no more just the two regular pillows and the long rectangle pillow across both of them and it looks simple and pretty. ❤
I don't have a decorative stool, but I do have a metal and decoratuve glass round table next to the bathtub. A small radio is always on top. Below in a plastic basket are my shampoo, body wash, foot pumice stone, etc. The top is a great place to drop my phone and eyeglasses when bathing. I have a small bathroom with almost no counter space and no drawers, so corraling items there is necessary for my time and sanity. Trust me, I would not put an unnecessary piece of furniture in this bathroom!😄
Deinfluencing is the one trend I enjoy seeing people jumping on. Also, LOVE what you said on accent walls, this has annoyed me for YEARS people were just doing "accent walls" without understand why you would want want in the first place and YES it always feels like they randomly spun round and picked a wall for no reason. Also annoys me when they do this on the wall with a chimney, like, do the alcoves or the chimney but not both as youre then just hiding the chinmey?!?!?!?!?!?
I LOVE L-shaped sofas over curved sofas though because communal time is necessary and I've always adored them. If I have a sofa it must be large, soft, and big enough to lie down on!
You used my fave word…cacophony. Retired teacher here. Spent 30 years using this amazing word! Never thought of it to use it in reference to pillows…😂😂😂
Well when we moved into a home we had built and I took my first bath in the new house, the stand alone tub was gorgeous, but I had no place to place soap or a towel😂. In came a small stool off our deck to sit by the tub.
I have a stand alone Victorian tub. I bought a hanging mesh pockets thing at a home store. It has grommets that can hang from the shower curtain hooks. I also got a little shelf with hooks that fit over the edge of the tub. Both items are waterproof. Finally I drape a wet facecloth over the side of the tub and put the soap and razor on that (only when taking a bath.)
I have an upholstered bench in my bedroom that I keep pillows on, they're there more than on the bed actually, neither are needed, but the bench layered with velvety pillows gives me a luxurious place to look while on my computer.
Smiles and Laughs Guaranteed ! Thanks Nick ! decorative pillows on the bed, Y? my minimalist heart struggles, make the bed, fold down the top cover, fluff the pillows, done. no stacking of pretty pillows to make it look nice. it looks great, I have very nice linens. LOL Couch pillows by all means, that's Decor. btw pillows squash down They Do Under Me Anyway !! LOL
Oh so right as all the time, in my opinion. The pillows. So I had six pillows plus a huge throw pillow. The problem I ran into for at last 5 years is that my husband did not take them off correctly ! So I would have to run into the room to remove all the pillows before he got into the bed. Nuts is what I was. Why did I not think to relax and remove like 4 of the pillows for good. And I finally did. So much easier. Thank you for your videos, I find them very funny, very informative and just love keeping up with good information. 😊
The stool in my bathroom is for my cat so that he can stare at me in comfort whilst I’m having a bath. He takes his monitoring duties seriously.

Aawww, I love cats! Too bad my only daughter is allergic to cats
One thing that I would really love to go away is this trend (that has been happening for a while) of using books merely for decor -- especially if they have stuff on top of them. I'm not taking all that stuff from there just to open a coffee table book! Also, what if water from vases seep into books?
Thanks for saying this! As an avid reader, it makes my head explode to see influencers buy books for the "right" colored jacket!
Yes! Nothing wrong with a pretty stack of books on the coffee or end table. But they should be accessible and something you as the homeowner actually enjoy and read! I keep my pretty houseplant books and a art book out in a pretty stack because I use them a lot.
Yes! Of course I think books are pretty, but when I look at books in someone's home, I assume I am learning something about them as a person.
I agree! I think my worst pet peeve with the books is when someone takes a beautiful old book and rips the cover and back off for “decor” of the inner book. 😢😡 Or cuts up the pages for decoupage. And comments r like, oh you’re so talented and it’s such a great idea. 😣
Oh nooo, I didn't know is a trend.i use books because I love them and try to read whenever I can
What a shame is becoming a trend😅
For the longest time I couldn’t figure out just why people put 10 pillows on their bed when they have to put them away to actually use the bed!! Thank you for saying it out loud and validating my feelings 😂
Ya me too. I wanted to hear him say that bcos i always knew. But didn't want to say out loud in case of making a faux pas.
I'm from Asia and my whole entire family is just very annoyed by this every time we travel 😂
I'm BIG into soaking and bubble baths - I use a stool next to the tub for a candle, my book, and a drink
@@shortsweet9764 I came here to say the same thing, thanks for saying it. . Affordable spa time.
Clawfoot tubs are EVERYTHING! Although I've never had a stool by my tub, I am rethinking this...
I don't care how often it's said i LOVE an accent/feature wall. As long as it makes sense in the overall room/home design I am a big fan lol
Me too! I know its dated, but I love the look of them. Mostly because I'm not bold enough to paint my entire room a bright color
Same! I often have a colour I really want but you get the worry that doing all four walls in it would be too dark - so having one accent wall and the others in a close-to-white colour is perfect! I've never done all the other walls white though, that's a bit jarring - off-white in a tint close to the accent is the way to go :)
It’s a good day when I see Nick on a cozy Saturday. 😄
Yep, I disagreed with him on this one... so we're both 'so 2005'. Lol
Agreed. An accent wall can be especially helpful in an open concept space to define the spaces visually. It doesn't have to be high- contrast to be effective.
I've also seen closet doors done in an accent color or wall paper.
Doesn’t he have an accent wall in the background 😂😂😂 i love accent walls
@@wakingtheworld I peaked in 2005. lol
In my admittedly very small bathroom, I have black on three walls with the fourth and largest, covered by a black and white palm leaf print wallpaper.
I too love an accent wall.
It's only practical if nothing is placed on top of it
Exactly
I think a stool near a bathtub can be so handy and looks cute.
Accent walls done correctly, can add a lovely focal point to a room.
We recently placed a small table lamp in our kitchen as it works great as a night light.
All the rest, I completely agree with.
I think the stool in the shower is definitely more for people who shave. We got a new house, and I noticed that most of the new showers don't have a ledge to prop your leg up and shave. Very difficult to do without a stool or something built in to safely put your leg up on.
What, you don't want to do the precarious and awkward one leg stork stand that I do?? 😂
@@rachelw1076 I'm too much of a liability lol!

I LOVE a small lamp on the kitchen counter. It's wonderfully welcoming during the night hours.
I have a tiny lamp on counter, it makes it soooo cozy. Same result, no space issue.
I honestly think teak is easier to care for than plastic which will get moldy.
I use a shower chair to prop my leg for shaving and I can use it when I need it for other things. My house is for me, not influencers.
@@pippadawg7037yes but you can bleach it unlike piece of wood. You have to throw it out since be inside the wood too.
So happy you addressed that ridiculous trend of a lamp on the kitchen counter, takes up valuable space in my opinion
The funny thing is he just did a video suggesting to add a lamp to the kitchen 🤷🏻♀️
Personally, I need a lamp on the counter - the lighting in my apt is terrrrrible
It absolutely depends on your overall home's lighting
And it gets SO greasy!!
Some people have tiny lamps, just for atmosphere.
Just paint the whole room, woodwork, doors, ceiling terra cotta. Just painting one wall makes it look you didn’t buy enough paint.
Everything? I know it can be effective but the whole room in terracotta.... OTT imo. Good job we all have different tastes... which keeps Nick in his job!
Commit and paint the room.
If I don't have a bath stool, where will I put my wine? 😄
I have a bath caddy for that.
@@towannamccurdy touche
I was given a wine glass holder that sticks on my bath wall and I put it at a point easy to reach it. Works great
If a lighting fixture makes me think “been me up, Scotty” it’s a NO - thanks!
…. a milking stool, and you live in the suburbs….
Of course, Kackie got it right the first time. It takes me a few tries to get things right!
He's obviously never hand milked a cow. Most of those 3-legged stools are way too high
I do really like how you think out everything going into a space but your minimalist slip is showing. Bath stools can be extremely practical as well as providing a softening visual break between the top of the tub and the floor. Bathrooms can benefit from softening elements as they are by nature rather sterile environments. Great vlog, thx.
Ha, my bathroom isn’t sterile…
🤷🏽♀️ They make sense when they don't have stuff on them
I like the stools.
Stools are useful
he's specifically stating the #aesthetic antique stools but also literally uses parents w kids as an example of an exception to this???
yeah, I have a stool in my bathroom just because I am a very short person who needs it to reach some stuff.
If we are lucky enough to live long enough or survive a shark attack we'll all need a bathroom stool
Because I respect you, I take all of this advice as "don't feel you have to do this just because it's a trend - do what works for you." As a disabled person who needs a shower stool and 9 pillows to get her body comfortable at night, imma do what I gotta do :P
My husband has always had an issue with decor for decor's sake. I'm not talking about hanging pictures, but things like a stack of books and vases, "guest" soaps, bowls of balls, etc. A bathroom seat is a useful thing, an uncomfortable tool piled with stuff you don't need in a bathroom is ridiculous.
I’ve had an accent wall in my guest room for two years…I’m about to paint the entire room this color. It’s beautiful - Behr Morrocan Red
“Cacophony of pillows” - love Nick!!
That is one of the applications that works best. Accent walls are absolutely necessary if you live in a loft or open concept space.
So in a nutshell, no one needs an accent wall but l like them 🙂
I still love my accent wall. Because it's well done. Love your videos!
Agree with all except a stool in the bathroom. Older folks can benefit from having a stool in the shower, for instance, or having someplace to sit in the room. Also having a place to sit while shaving one's legs.❤
Did you not see his note regarding this? Rewatch that section.
@@denisedorsey2889cmon don’t be rude.
He’s talking about using it as decor. Not as a necessary place to rest for those with mobility issues.
I really need someplace to sit. I am recovering from serious back surgery.
really not sure why people are so bitter about you saying this lol. he did put in a little note underneath, but it's not hard to miss. you are absolutely right!
Well said.
My thoughts on the accent walls with the mouldings- enjoy dusting that.
ok yes, an accent wall isnt totally necessary. no visual design element is necessary. but accent walls arent bad. you have one behind you, as well. sometimes having the whole room one color can feel overwhelming or boring depending on the color. maybe someone doesnt want every wall burnt cienna but they still want to add some warmth. its a nice way to create dimension or texture to an otherwise flat surface. with any trend, dont feel like you need to hop on the train. do things because you think it works for you and its what you like
I agree totally on the little stool by the tub, except with a claw-foot tub, there is no place to place a beverage or a candle or maybe your towel or whatever...then I think it is handy.
I'm currently renovating my soon to be home. Your content is so helpful. It makes the process easier and it is helping me not to overthink the interior design aspect of it. For me the pillowpile on the bed is just unnecessary clutter and extra work... Can't fathom how some people have time for it.
Thank u for the pillow talk.I never liked moving pillows just to sit down or go to sleep. Keep it simple and elegant!😊
I would like to have an out of date accent wall with beautiful molding. I could be uncool but spend hours admiring my uncool wall.
They usually live on my bed but I don’t use them on the bed
3) accent wall - I’m waiting for another half a year before I do my accent wall. It’ll be a wallpaper scene with birds and colour. But then again I’ll also be painting the white walls the same colour as the main colour of the wallpaper when I get round to it.
Dear Nick, you are a gem! Simply loving your content and sense of humor. Not to mention the many advises I incorporated. It's gold, Nick, a gold!
My husband keeps a milking stool in our bathroom for his pile of books. I’ve never liked it. 😒
@@freden9234 in the bathroom...hmm.
Love that green accent wall at 8:12. Like to see up close the one behind you also.😊
I am glad that you were NOT talking about accessibility stools and chairs in the bathroom.
Nick clearly stated that these are things one doesn’t necessarily need. Obviously it doesn’t apply to those who actually DO need them.
I bought my medical bath stool for US $35 at Target. It's not pretty, but it does the job very well.
But I love the color and it would be too much all over😢
Not that I ever had accent walls in any of our rooms, but I think if they are done with taste and not too standing out, they are interesting.
I'm glad to see another molding hater. It just looks so clunky.
CONFUSED! Don't you have a gorgeous dark wall in the background with molding, molding on the white wall, and wood on the walls of the kitchen?? Seems VERY accent walls to me?? I want to add these things to some of my walls to give my home a more custom look, but dang, you have me questioning now.
It’s your house, if you think it will make your house more you and increase your enjoyment of it, you should do it, regardless of whether others like it
Haha i was going say that but think the other walls are same color plus his home more open concept by looks of it.
So true on the pillow issue on the bed. I’ve never been one to have more than two pillows or three on my bed, but some people I mean you can’t even see the bed the cover the entire bed definitely takes about an hour to take them off.
9:52 "Oversized Lighting" ... not me at Mickey D's under a giant human hot table lamp 🤣
And I got to add..
I love an accent wall (done right!)
The stool IS useful to raise your leg when shaving. 😁
i have a curved sofa in my apartment and you are so right about everything you said! you lose so much space on the curves and the curves make some parts of the sofa less comfortable to sit on. and it is impossible to nap on (but i'm not much of a napper). it's still gorgeous to me as i really love the art deco vibe of it but i wish i had thought of these pros and cons before going in on it years ago. great video as always.
"You don't need a milking stool in your bathroom. " 😂
I love your content❤ thank u for all you do. bathroom stools also help women with shaving.
You are so much fun to watch. Full of great tips with a great sense of humor! Thanks for making these videos! ❤️
Isn't that an accent wall behind him? The charcoal wall with mouldings.
Right lol even if it’s probably meant to separate the dining area, it’s still acts as an accent wall
@@vacuumblink2300 🤣🤣🤣
@@vacuumblink2300no cause there's two. I'm sad he painted it now
i love my stool by my bathtub- I love having a relaxing bath with a glass of good wine.
I go back and forth on the accent wall colour issue
My basement is full of throw pillows and blankets that I collected when I was wrapped up in consumerism.
If none of them are super designer or personally meaningful, I bet your local pet shelter would ADORE THEM
Keep just a few of your favorites and donate the rest. It so freeing to get rid of useless items and gain space.
I love that word, too, That is one of the words that sounds exactly like its definition; "mellifluous" being another.
OMG! Thank you for including the unnecessariness of all those extra pillows!
LOL Couch pillows by all means, that's Decor. btw pillows squash down
They Do Under Me Anyway !!
Ok, Nick... you are not an influencer. Influencers are buy, show and tell. You are an Interior Design Critic. ❤
7:41 isn’t that an accent wall with mouldings in the dining area behind you? I do like it btw.
