This video essay explores alternative essays for Breaking Bad's final episode Felina, and how Walter White's story ends. Walter White could have met multiple different fates and finished his relationship with Skyler, Jesse and Jack's men very differently. If you want to examine Felina and the potential alternative endings then watch this video all the way to the end.

I think Jack bringing out Jesse is actually in character, albeit convenient for the plot. Walt specifically says “you partnered with him” to flare his ego at the accusation of working with a “rat”. since he’s a sadist, he’s probably proud of how deeply he fucked up Jesse and wants to prove his contempt for him.

Pride is the sin that killed most of the main characters. Walt could have taken the first 3 million and be done; Gus could have delegated the killing of Hector, Hank could have admitted to the DEA he missed Walt right under his nose, Jack could have had them kill Walt outside like planned. Pride and ego killed all these men.

I feel like this episode having no conflict was kinda perfect for wrapping up Walts story. The whole series there was always a step he wasn’t willing to take, something he didn’t have the guts to do, a crack in the finish. And In Granite State, he almost gives up entirely, until he doesn’t. Walt finally realizes his potential, his luck he’s had since the beginning, and uses it all one last time to set things right (to a degree). Over the course of the show, Walt tried to be Elliot, then Tuco, then Gus, then Heisenberg. And these choices led to his downfall. But in the finale? He was finally Walter White.

Walter White in the finale is far more badass and far cooler than literally any other version of himself in the series. In a flashback scene in El Camino you can see Walt’s handprint on the machine in the background. The flashback takes place before Walter dies but Vince Gilligan didn’t want to have it removed. @@mankytoes I think Jack demonstrates enough ego and weird "honor" that he would want to send Walt to the grave with undeniable proof. Jack was hired to do a job; he didn't do it to the letter and it nags at him; he saw Walt as an equal, but who has now fallen. But he still owed Walt a fulfillment of that promise.
As an analogy: if Walter was Napoleon, Jack was another monarch. It was best to demonstrate to himself and his people that he honored Monarchy. Napoleon was not executed like a common criminal, he was exiled and allowed to retain title of emperor to uphold an institution. It helped guarantee that monarchs would continue to treat each other in a similar way and legitimized the structures that maintained their power.
Jack proved to Walt that he may not have completely honored the letters of his promise, but he did honor the spirit of his promise. Even though Walt no longer had political power in the criminal world, the infamous Heisenberg still represented an institution and a pragmatic tradition among other criminals. Jack ensuring Walter knew he honored the spirit of agreements would have helped him negotiate with other crime bosses.

“We stay right here with Walt. He’s at peace. The cook is going well. He taught Jesse well. All is as it should be.
Once more, CLOSE ON THE COOK VAT -- Walt’s hand rests against it like a cowboy’s hand rests on the neck of his horse.
And now... the hand relaxes and slowly slips down out of frame. It leaves behind a small smear of BLOOD.
BIRD’S EYE VIEW: we look straight down on Walt as he tumbles into frame, lying flat on his back on the floor. His eyes stare up at us, lifeless. And yet, his final expression is one of faint satisfaction.
We slowly CRANE UP, UP and AWAY from him. Walt shrinks smaller and smaller in frame. POLICE OFFICERS approach him now -- four, six, eight of them. They move in cautiously, their guns aimed.
They’re too late. He got away.”

He’s made a lot of selfish decisions throughout the show, while justifying to himself that they were the right choice to make. If he were to say, “well, I started out doing this for you, but I became selfish”, that would diminish the impact of him admitting his selfishness.

On Alternative Number 6 for Walt's death, where Walt goes with Jesse to die somewhere peaceful, I think Walt died exactly where he wanted to be. Throughout the show, the one place that's made Walt feel truly alive, that made him proud of his abilities and his knowledge, and made him feel important, was the lab. So when he goes to the lab and looks around and then dies, I think it's perfect because he's dying in the one place where he felt the most important and proud, where he was given credit for his "art" as Jesse says. I think personally he died in the perfect place in the show.

He outsmarted the police on a crosscountry road trip, killed an entire gang while they had the upper hand, got money to his family, all of it with nearly minimal effort. The only episode where he truly had nothing holding him back, not his family or fear of losing their love, fear of the police, fear of Jesse turning on him, nothing at all.
The moment those handicaps were gone he became ruthlessly efficient. If he didn't have cancer, this version of Walt would've killed the entire gang and still managed to evade police.

BUT Walt has had literally months to sit up in his cabin and plan this out in his head, so I can buy that maybe he would pull it off without a.hitch. especially when you consider that previously in the show when things go wrong, it tended to be because he had to come up with plans on the spot, circumstances changing at the last minute, etc. this time he's had so much time to plan, and he knows if he goes back it's not like Hank is still around to be on his heels (as it seems Hank was the only one who could ever really figure out what Heisenberg was upto and what he might do next)

For the Elliot ending - at the end of the prior episode (so like ten minutes ago if you’re binge watching), Walt heard Gretchen on tv saying Walter White was dead, there was only Heisenberg. I believe Walt invaded his old colleague’s house SO CALMLY, to show them he’s out there, that the great Walter White, speaking in a manner they’d remember, is actually alive, literally responding to their interview. And then he intimates and ensures his failsafe with lazer pointers. Walt is so petty, it’s awesome

I would have loved to see the ending of him smoking his own meth, because it wouldn't be _his_ meth, it'd be Jesse's that he made when he was enslaved. It'd be the creation that Jesse learned from him and perfected, not what he started. It would hold all the same feelings of "so this is why my meth is so popular," but also give that tinge of "Walter doesn't differentiate between his own meth and Jesse's at this point."

But watching it again and seeing the themes of the story, i think the ending we got is the best : not an ending that says " breaking bad isn't worth it and you will lose everything", but one that says " no matter how awful his actions were, he lived and died on his own terms".

  • @Robert___98

Breaking Bad is my favourite TV show with my favourite TV show ending ever and all that jazz, but if I _had_ to give one nitpick, it's a slight aspect of the moment where Jesse decides not to shoot Walt. I think conceptually it works beautifully. Jesse sticks to his inner merciful nature and doesn't resort to violence, even when someone whose harmed him is asking for it, while it also being a case of him giving Walt a non-verbal thank you. But I think the scene would've worked 2x better if Jesse hadn't seen Walt's gunshot wound. That for me just complicates the whole ordeal. Because then that means that one of the reasons he doesn't shoot Walt is that Walt is already about to die anyway, which confuses the narrative of Jesse being merciful; he's basically choosing to give Walt a slower death and/or may be under the false impression that Walt is wanting him to shoot him to give the easy way out, as he knows how calculated Walt is that he may just assume Walt knows he's bleeding to death and is looking for a quicker sendoff.
If you delete the moment where Jesse does witness the gunshot wound, and he instead delivers the "Then do it yourself" line by completely his own admission, it accomplishes everything its wanting to, and even adds one final twist to the last few moments of the series, as it would mean Walt's gunshot wound doesn't get properly revealed at all until he notices it the same time as the audience.

@@breakbad9753 That's my whole point though. Why show Jesse see Walt's gunshot wound if he's going to end up not shooting him anyways? By having Jesse see it, all it does is give Jesse an excuse not to trust Walt one last time, which to me slightly sours the final look the two give each other at the end.

    • @CharlieQuartz
      @CharlieQuartz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Jesse not shooting Walt isn't about him being merciful, it's about refusing to be a part of his plans any more, to be manipulated into giving Walt the ending he wants. Walter always framed Jesse's actions as doing what was best for both of them when, more often than not, they always served himself first. Seeing Walt's wound tells Jesse that his freedom, the freedom from this tyrant in his life, is not dependent on him having to resort to violence and he can just leave it all behind.

The fact you point out that many things could have and should have gone wrong with rescuing Jesse is what one would think. On the other hand I think it dovetails perfectly, for a final closing, with the point Jesse was trying to drive home to Hank earlier on that Walter is "luckier than you" which was no exaggeration throughout the series. All in all I think they did a great job with closing out the show. We'll likely be watching long into the future. Pretty fortunate to be a part of this genre of T.V.!!!

One idea I had for an alternate ending sort of involves a few changes throughout the show, but what if it was this:
Jesse throughout the show would be changed to be able to learn how to make Walt’s meth, but not ever nearly as good as his. Walt would then believe that Jesse May never be as good a cook as him. This would need to change the part of the show where Jesse goes to Mexico to make meth for the cartel and it ends up very pure, but assuming that gets changed into something else, then the finale could change a bit.
So, assuming Walt never believed Jesse could cook as good as him... in his last moments in the lab, he would see a batch Jesse has made earlier, and it’s shown to be just as good as Walt’s. I think that would have been a heartwarming conclusions in many ways. It would show that Jesse managed to, in a way, “pass” Walt’s “Chemistry class”. It would also show that Walt was capable of teaching someone like Jesse something so complicated after all. Not that he had any doubts in teaching, but it shows he was able to teach someone what I would assume to be a University-level “chemistry lesson”, something he should have been qualified for.
I think that would have been an interesting conclusion, and it would show the blue meth Walt and Jesse made one last time to both him and the audience.

Vince had no idea what he was going to do with the machine gun in Walt's trunk. We see S5 open with it. When he got to the writing the finale, someone reminded him and felt he had to include it.
The Gretchen and Elliot scene was because of a 16 y/o fan named Kevin Cordasco. He had terminal cancer and Vince Gilligan met him. He offered to tell him how he planned for the show to end, but Kevin said he would see it himself (sadly, he did pass away before the S5 premiere) but he did ask Vince what happened with Gretchen and Elliot, which gave Vince the idea.

Hey man, i really love your Breaking Bad essays, been enjoying them a lot over the past few days!
One thing i would like to add to this is that i personally really like that everything in the finale just works out for Walt. While not being airtight in terms of in universe logic, i find it thematically very appropriate. The entire show, Walt was struggling to assert control over his life, stopping at nothing to bend the world around him to his will, only to be finally taken out by a stroke of dumb luck as Hank absent-mindedly reaches for smth to read while taking a dump. The message seems to be that, no matter how brilliant your plans or how ruthless your execution, ultimately, you are stil subject to the whims of the universe.
In the final episode, while Walt is stil very much trying to achieve his goals, for the first time in the show, he knows exactly for what reason. He finally stopped lying to himself and running away from his true motivations. He stopped fighting. In that sense i find it quite poetic that as soon as he does, things fall into place.

I think Jack bringing Jesse into the room to prove Walt wrong makes perfect sense tbh. Throughout the series we’ve seen the hubris and ego and characters lead to their downfall time and time again. Tuco killing his guy led to him kidnapping Walt and Jesse which led to his death. Gus gloating to Tio and Tio appearing to rat him out led to Gus killing Tio and dying. Walt rejecting the money from Gretchen and Elliot, staying in the meth game after numerous opportunities to escape, manipulating Jesse countless times, and many other instances caused him to dig his own grave. These characters all share one major character flaw which is their ego. They want to prove others wrong and seek revenge where they can. It’s what comes of trying to stay at the top of the empire pyramid. It doesn’t matter if Walt’s a dead man, Jack wanted to prove to Walt that *he* was the one who finally got ultimate control over Jesse.

I think you're wrong about Jack. Jack is basically Walt's dark mirror of how he could be if he lacked a few certain grounding traits, the same way Todd is to Jesse. Jack being a white supremacist highlights how Walt is a (Walter) White supremacist. Jack has Walt's ego cranked up to 11. Jack is so egotistical that he has to show the man he's about to kill just how superior he is to his partner. This is just like Walt's egotism at its worst, and like Gus' drive for vengeance, its the one mistake that gets him killed. As a final villain, Jack is not compelling because he's uniquely smart like Gus, but because he's basically Walt from half a season ago.
