- This is a video essay about the morality of Breaking Bad and the value of human life in AMC's hit series starring Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul. Breaking Bad is a character study of what humans value in life. Each character in Breaking Bad has a moral compass, but how do they make decisions?
In this video, I examine the best scenes and murders in the 'Breaking Bad' series, and the turning points in each season that highlights the decision-making process for the characters; their philosophy, how and why they choose to kill in each situation, and how weighted each choice is.
The cost of taking a human life has to filter through three factors; Pragmatism, Morality and Consequences. The characters are conflicted whenever all 3 factors cannot be satisfied.

The difference between Walt and Jesse is that Jesse feels remorse for the horrible things he does and tries to make up for them whereas Walt either justifies his evil actions to himself or actually likes doing them.

What i love about this show is that every death has consequences, and changes characters. Jesse after killing Gale become depressed and changed completely.
It’s like The Godfather I and II in that respect. The deaths stay with you and they have consequences.
Fun fact: Krazy-8 was never meant to survive the first episode but all the actors everyone on set loved the actual actor who played krazy-8 so much, Vince came up with a way to write him into episode 2
It's a good thing they did, too. Given how good the writers are, I'm sure it still would have been great television either way, but the moral dilemma of killing krazy-8 and the tension that it brought to the series is what really sold me.

@@judywright4241 Todd was a very strange character. This guy shoots a child with no hesitation, no remorse, not even a shred of emotion, and yet he otherwise doesn't seem like a terrible person. As awful as he was, I couldn't help but like him a little. Not as a person, I think he deserves to fester in burn in Hell, but every time he came on screen I couldn't help but crack a bit of a smile. For a show that has so many characters with sociopathic tendencies, it's incredible how they were able to write them all so diversely and make them really feel different and alive.

Something I find very interesting about Jane’s death is that, in the moment, Walt probably did think he could live with himself. However, it was only _after_ the fact that we find out about the immense feelings of guilt he’s experiencing in the episode “Fly”. In this episode, a fly gets into the lab, and Walter erratically tries to destroy it. Jesse is confused as to why Walt is so fixated on the fly, however as the episode progresses and a drugged up Walter apologised for Jane’s death, and even almost reveals to Jesse that he was there, it’s clear that it represents his guilt for letting her die. He only saw her as a chain around Jesse’s leg, some junkie who was using him solely to get high, but when Jesse sobs in his arms saying that he “loved her more than anything”, and Jane’s father being so distraught that he accidentally collided two planes together, killing hundreds, it’s clear that Jane’s life had more meaning than he initially thought. Ironically, Jesse is the one who manages to kill the fly in the end, symbolising that he has finally moved on from her death. However, that same night, a fly buzzes around in Walter’s bedroom, keeping him from sleeping, showing that he is truly unable to live with his actions.
Edit: I was rewatching season 5 recently and a scene caught my attention. The episode after Mike's death, Walter sat in their headquarters waiting for Todd to arrive so they can dispose of his body. The same fly can be heard buzzing around. Just a cool little detail I thought I should mention.

@@BlyGuy halfway through the final season now of BCS and holy shit, it's only getting better. Not gonna spoil anything in case you haven't seen it yet but the most recent episode (s6e7 I believe) was one of the most intense episodes of the entire series so far, in my opinion.

Another small detail relating to crazy 8 is that for the entire rest of the show, whenever Walt makes a sandwich for himself he removes the crust from it. Almost like a reminder of where he began, and that it's too late to turn back.
He does that with other people he's killed. Once he kills Mike, he starts getting drinks on the rocks, just like Mike used to.

Walt was not made for the criminal life. It started because of his illness and having a family he wanted to take care of. He couldn't pay all of his bills, his son was handicapped, wife pregnant and he was already working 2 jobs. He had up to 2 years left so jail or death wasn't a problem for him. He was in over his head and decided to do it, at first, for the family. He was good at it and accomplished his goal. As Walter White he was helpless. As Heisenberg he was in control.
Well, put yourself in Walter's shoes. If you were absolutely going to die of cancer within a certain time, are you 100% certain your better moral principles would survive for that time? Are you really so certain? Hmmmmmm....

There's a line from season 3 that I paraphrase all the time, when Walt is buying the condo. Walt is all "I'll take it," and the dude is like "Yeah no, this is just the mock up, this isn't the real condo," and Walt says "Tell me one thing that isn't negotiable," and ends up getting his way.
It took until seeing your vid to realize that Hank's life was the thing that Walt couldn't negotiate.

It's a good sense to have when it comes to business. There is nothing in this world that isn't negotiable.... so long as we're all being polite about it.
I had a full time job I was burnt out on, so I told the boss, "You can have me four days a week, or no days a week". His counter was to offer more money. I declined the raise. The schedule was adjusted accordingly.
It's not that you'll never arrive at an impasse, it's just that anything can be talked about. Circumstances can be shifted. Sometimes, there is no middle ground tp be reached and you better be prepared to walk or fall in line. But it's a lot better if you're prepared to walk.
That's my advice for young people - do whatever you can to save enough money that you never need a particular job. Being able to quit a job at the drop of a hat and not worrying about it will make every job far more enjoyable. Too many people enslave themselves with poor spending practices. That trapped mentality is not healthy.

Breaking Bad is always the best tv show ever made.
It's good, but I don't know if I'd say it's the best. The Sopranos easily pulls ahead in my opinion. In the later seasons of BB, they seemed to jump the shark. It just got to a point where it didn't feel believable anymore. Where it really tanked for me was after the introduction of the neo-nazi group. It didn't really seem to fit for some reason

A great death caused by Walter to talk about would have been Mike, he simply killed him to prove to himself that he doesn't roll over. A desperate attempt, instant regret when his adrenaline leaves his system and comes to the realisation that he wasn't thinking with his head but his ego.
And Mike had no interest in what he had to say and told him to let him die

This is why I have always believed that this show is a contrast of two worldviews. Walter is a nihilist, and the apex of his view is finally revealed when he says, "I did it because I like it." Jesse, on the other hand, though doing the same thing, is a moral realist, and you see how it destroys him from within throughout the show.
Thats not what a nihilist is because Walter keeps searching for meaning in his life and finally found it

@@eezghp7712 you can be both. Nihilism = no ultimate meaning. And you can take that view in multiple directions. Despair isn’t the only path of the nihilistic road. Others take a self interested approach, resulting in a subjective sense of purpose through hedonism. When Walt said “I did it for me, because I liked it,” that was the climax of the show. It was the moment he was honest with others about his own worldview. He didn’t believe in an objective ultimate purpose, but he found excitement and joy in his hedonistic approach.
All that to say he was wrong. Nihilism is wrong, and hedonism doesn’t achieve its own goal, but you can hold both views together.

Walt doesn’t embrace nihilism, Walt finds a purpose by taking back control of his life, making free choices and feeling “alive” (which you didn’t include in his line against Skyler). None of these are either nihilistic or hedonistic. He also said he was alive to Jesse in episode 1
Also if Walt was nihilistic he would do everything for revenge against the “society” and general life that fucked him over. He doesn’t do that, instead he wants to “redeem” the past by giving his life a purpose again and fulfill his lost potential as a chemist, father, husband and even teacher
Ive watched the whole series a couple times now and each time I rewatch it, I always forget how mentally draining it is as a viewer. The writing, the acting, the editing, and the videography makes it feel like you're actually there with the characters as they go through their crazy journeys. One of the best shows ever.

That's not direct. He tried to wake Jesse up by shaking him and that caused her to roll over. As far as I'm concerned it was morally justified to let her die, not only because she threatened him but also because her presence not only put her life but also Jesse's at risk and they'd either ruin their lives and try to blackmail him again or end up killing themselves anyway

It certainly does devalue their life, if their entire life revolves around getting their next high until they die from an OD or their body gives out, their life is obviously less valuable than a functional member of society the same way that a person in a coma has less value to their life, at that point killing them is pretty much a mercy

Crazy to think that Jesse was supposed to only exist to facilitate Walts entry into the drug trade. The chemistry (pun intended) between Aaron and Brian though was so good, and Aaron was such an amazing actor that Vince couldn’t let him go. I cannot imagine this show without Jesse, especially his bumpy father/son relationship with Walt and it’s tragic ending.
This is also explored in Better Call Saul, when Lalo killing the Travel Wire employee was relatively unimportant to the audience and we root for Jimmy to win the case. However, seeing the victim's family in the courtroom and knowing they aren't going to receive justice for someone who was important to them is difficult for both Jimmy and the audience.
One of the things I love this show is there aren't many death scenes. Like, every characters death, even minor characters have huge effect on the story and the other characters.
Jesse had something called EMPATHY AND REMORSE. Which was something Walt gave up on for awhile, but in the end he regained it. He had to lose everything in order to find his humanity again. But Jesse innately cares about protecting the small, week, innocent and defenseless, especially children. Even tiny insects. He’s a natural protector. And THATS why doing the antithesis of that tortures him so. It’s against his innate nature to kill a defenseless person who has done nothing to him or people he cares about. He will fight back when it’s justified. He will stand his ground and defend it, himself and those he’s loyal too. Because that is what a natural protector does. And Mike saw that in him. Mike saw his genuine good heart. And Gus saw his loyalty. But he also saw his courage, and it was that moment when Hector slit that guys you know what, and Walter whimpered. But Jesse looked at Gus Enraged, about to come out of his skin and jump him, and he looked Gus right in the eye without a trace of fear. He looked like he was ready to take him on in that moment. Go back and watch that scene. It’s there. But Think about it, You never see Jesse being tortured with remorse because he shot the cartel guy, or over those two guys Walt ran over to save him just as he was about to lay his life down to take them out, as payback for what they did to Andreas brother and Combo. There is bravery in him, much more than Walter actually. Walts is bravado. But Jesse’s is courage. Walt on the other hand? Three words: narcissistic personality disorder 😂🤣

No appreciation of the enormous complexity that can exist within “mentally healthy” people. Walt made the choices he made because he was extremely intelligent, ambitious, prideful, and unsatisfied with his life. When he realized he was going to die soon, he decided that he was going to make a difference in one way or another, and prove his existence to the world that had disregarded and spat upon him relentlessly up until then. You act so smug, and yet you ignore the fact that a large chunk of men would choose to go down a similar path under those desperate circumstances.

Not gonna lie Breaking bad has to be the most realistic show I’ve ever seen for example walt and jesse are the main characters in most shows main characters die this heroic death but in breaking bad walt and jesse can die at the most random places/time or when someone dies it gets taken seriously or shift the plot in the entire show
Keep in mind, Jesse was meant to be killed off in the first season. But Aaron Paul nailed the character so hard that they just couldn't kill him, and as a result one could argue that BB is as much about Jesse as it is about Walt.
Same thing happened with James Marsters as Spike in Buffy. He was supposed to be a one off, and ended up being pivotal for the rest of the series and the spinoff.

Which is a good thing; Who wants to watch a show where everything is realistic? Screw that, we want drama! The story of my life told accurately would be very realistic and cripplingly boring.
The odds that anyone has lived Walter's life are basically zero, and even then, nowhere near as entertaining even with embellishments.
It's just compelling entertainment.

No. A briefly mentioned aspect would be what's fair and legal. We don't know for sure what Walt contributed to the company. But should it be possible to gain nothing from all this? Life didn't seem fair to Walt. And even in that he wasn't respected as a teacher. Low wage. The medical bills for his son and himself. Bad medical advice at first .good medical care if you are rich. A critique of society is in there that is seperated from drugs
What I always liked about Breaking Bad is the plausibility it offered.
There is litteraly no plot armor and as you have said actions have consequences. It's a good emulation of reality.

What plot armor is in the show?
I have always had a very hard time determining what is Jesse's value to Walt. Sometimes it feels like Jesse is closer to being a son to Walt than Walt's actual son. At the same time, Walt would never endanger his son's life like that and he would never manipulate him in such a way...At the end of the series, is Walt there to save Jesse or just to get killed by him? It's been a while since I've watched the show, maybe I'm remembering some of this wrong.
It's a good question. I think that Walt does have *some* fatherly affection for Jesse, just think how far he went to keep him alive and safe etc. Throughout the series' b4hand, but he does see him more as a tool than a person. If he has a job that needs doing that he can't (or doesn't want to) do himself he sends in Jesse. The manipulation is just how he gets Jesse to do what he wants. I don't think he even realises he's doing it half the time, it's basically a reflex. At the end... I honestly don't know if he went there to save Jesse or kill him (and stop him cooking *his* product) but as soon as he saw him his instincts kicked in and he saved his life.

@Alexander Kerensky I think they're pretty clear: Walter saw on TV that the blue meth was still being produced, there was only one another person that could do it, Jesse, he also saw Gretchen and Elliot talking about how Walter didn't matter on the creation of their business (just to divert attention from the fact that the great mind behind their business was a drug lord). He decided to take revenge on the nazis, kill Jesse and find a way to give the rest of his money to his family (using Elliot and Gretchen). In the end he saw that Jesse was being slaved and decided to save him.
A simple way of describing it: Walt loved jesse, but he valued himself more

This is a very erodite take on a classic series. Outside of the themes of this video, I would like to point out the calibre of acting in this show still surprises me.

I'd like to think it's a mix of "erotic" and "erudite", which is in fact absolutely true here.
Something interesting is that in Felina, Walt came there to kill Jesse, but seeing him in that state made him change his mind. It's one of the few times in the show where the first box isn't checked, but the second box is. Jesse doesn't need to die, but Walt is dying anyways so killing him won't affect him one bit. The third box isn't checked either, all of Jesse's loved ones are dead except for his parents, who already disowned him. Walt could kill Jesse and no one would be affected. But he decides in those moments, to save Jesse for Jesse's own sake. He, for the only time in the show, does something purely because it benefits Jesse. It shows under everything he still had some care for him, deep down
"...And the Bag's in the River" is arguably not just one of the best Breaking Bad episodes, but arguably (imo) one of the best pieces of media I've seen tackle the taking of another human life. It's done with such beauty that when I watched it for the first time, I realized this show had grown from entertainment to pure artistry.
The opening alone is amazing. The flashback to Walt's past intercuts with his current life, cleaning up human entrails and flesh from the half dissolved corpse of Emilio helps contrast the old Walter White with the evolving one. And as you pointed out, details such as Skyler's pregnancy and Krazy 8 wanting the edges cut off his sandwiches helps reinforce the value of human life - it's not a simple matter of Walt going down to the basement to finish off Domingo. He's severely conflicted about taking someones life.
I also appreciate them showing his little 'pros and cons' list of if he should or shouldn't kill Krazy 8. On the one side, there's a plethora of moral reasons to not kill him, but it's all seemingly swept aside by the singular, cold note on the opposite side: "He'll kill your entire family if you let him go". Walt has moral standards at this point, but they're not seen as possible (or even logical) to abide to in this situation.
When Walt realizes that Domingo intends to kill him, he doesn't storm into the basement in anger. He's distraught that his hope to avoid face to face murder is now out the window ("Why are you doing this?"). He's so distraught by this that he barely reacts to being stabbed in the leg during the killing , instead slumping down and saying "I'm sorry.... I'm so sorry".
And the ending.... is just art yet again. The camera pans down to Walt looking over the cars on the motorway, the flashback from the start of the episode returning with the key question: what is it that makes a human? The body? The soul? Does Walter White even have a soul now?
I remember as the episode ended right there, I thought to myself that Walt had lost a core part of his humanity when he killed Krazy 8. And it now seemed lost forever.
I wish I could go back to watching this for the first time. The adrenaline this show kept me hopped up on... damn

That was an excellent video. I loved the ideas that you shared. I never seen breaking bad explained from this angle. You made me appreciate the writing much more and understand the motivations of the characters much more clearly. I feel that this video also helped me understand life alittle bit better too. Funny that Walter didn’t care about how good his meth was from the start. He was just happy that it was adequate enough to sell. If only Jessie didn’t go ahead and try to sell to Krazy-8 then Walter at least would’ve been able to achieve his goal.

The Walt letting Jane die thing is important but i always feel like the rolling Jane over was underappreciated, Walt pushes Jane over by accident turning a safe whoops puked on your back into a lethal choke. It was Walt's fault and he did nothing.
I think it's interesting how Jane was hugging Jesse, she was already on her side and if it wasn't for Walt shaking Jesse she wouldn't have died.
