Ok so basically the song isn't about a girl. Its a story about their friendship and how their individual struggles are tearing them and their friendship apart. It highlights social issues like substance abuse, domestic abuse, abandonment and mental illness. The storyline is really good so I would recommend trying to pick it up from the beginning and watching the music videos in order. If you do that this video hits way harder cause you understand why Jin is crying and why they all end up in those situations. If you guys feel like I recommend reading the webtoon save me. It gives an overview of the storyline

1:35 they didn't have much money when they made this song in 2015, they used theirs own stuff and managers as actors and the managers' cars this is the song that got them their first music show win ever after 2 years. But sadely they were accused of chart manipulation even tho theirs company was struggling financially

So basically it's not about a girl, it's about their friendship that is slowly tearing apart because they're all going through their own little struggle.
I don't really understand Rm's character's story but all I know is he lives in a trailer park with his mom and sick dad.
Jin is the main protagonist and in his character is basically trapped in a endless time loop that he can only escape is he saves his best friends from their destined futures. He gets sent back to a specific date, April 11 where he has to start all over if he fails to save his friends dying(some of them die) or getting into trouble.
Suga's character is your typical depressed drunk friend. He's very close to Jungkook but after he pushed a teacher and got expelled they never saw him again. In different timelines he would try to burn himself in his apartment. He actually died in one of the timelines
J-hope's character was abandoned in an amusement park by his mother and his been living in an orphanage for 10 years until he fell in the bridge and hit his head. After that he's been in the hospital for a while faked some of his mental disorders ykyk and has had a pretty normal life after unlike the others.
Jimin's character suffered major seizures after he witnessed a little kid's murder in the flower abortorium and has been in the hospital all his life because his parents were ashamed of his situation. He also tried to drown himself in the hospital bathroom where Jin saved him.
V killed his abusive father after he had enough of him physically abusing his sister and went to prison. In a different timeline he jumped off a platform on the beach and drowned.
Jungkook was the only one who has fucked up the most. He would get abused by his step father while his parents just watched and the boys who were his only family were now falling apart so he decided by not end everything? He jumped off a building and landed on Jin's car while he was driving by and in another timeline he his body dropped right behind Jin while he was walking home.
I didn't give much details just because I want you guys to watch the BTS storyline explanation vid by xceleste.

I NEED U was the start of everything, this is really when the hype for BTS began worldwide (bigger markets such as US & UK) because of the intricate details they put in all contents of Bangtan Universe (BU) and add all the amazing songs with its beautiful lyrics and meaning, inspiration and influence they put out there.

My emotions are normally all over the place no matter how many times I've seen this video, I literally hold my breath each time and my heart pounds but this is the first time I left smiling because of QcAshuan being a peanut acting like he was getting stabbed, I really can't with you. This song was the turning point in BTS career, when their image grew up and they dealt with depression, loneliness, growing up, anger, while showing either your friends can help you deal with issues or you act normal with your friends but in reality you're going through all these emotions. Who do you think V stabbed? Did you notice the pairs? We had to wait and anticipate what was going to happen next video. Welcome to BU. Makes sense at the very end.

its not about a girl... the lyrics dont relate to the storyline at all
You need to watch the music videos in order so you guys can stop making up meanings for these videos. They string together to make one MASSIVE sad story in the BTS Universe! This video keeps showing V in the video because at the start of the story his character commits suicide and the rest of the group ends up a pressed mess. They each already had their own issues, but losing V was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Jin finds a way to travel through time in each MV and no matter how hard he tries he’s not able to save everyone and V stays dead. The lyrics to the songs don’t actually have anything to do with the music videos themselves. They’re like stories within stories.
