    I always build 3 bedrooms with one door as dwarfs can travel diagonally.
    Now with new gain knowledge and some more cheese. I can build an even more efficient fortress!
    P.S, do you know, if you try to build farming tiles, while scrolling down the Z-levels, you can discover where your map cavern is as farm tiles will appear on buildable surface!
    Nice way to pop open the cavern to start pasturing your animals.

    I made a fort using that room value exploit, in my case I used it to put all of my bedrooms in a dorm style blob in the middle of my workshops then had all of the bedrooms overlap a similar corner of BS, the dwarves love their communal sleeping as long as they know somewhere out there is a functionally useless blob of platinum covered in "masterful engravings of a body part."

    I've just been making my guild halls and temples two stories of art first 11x11, but 9x9 still works and i haven't tried 7x7 yet, engraved by a legendary engraver. That puts them over 30k with just regular stone floors and walls. But this looks like a nice little exploit i might try in my next fort.

  • @FunkyTwn
    @FunkyTwn ปีที่แล้ว +8

    If you instead use double-thick walls between rooms, then both sides count as engraved, also with the Steam version you can now engrave constructed walls, which is new, but constructed walls are engraved on BOTH sides, so you don't have to manage which side the engraver is on, and it counts towards the value of other rooms that share that wall.

    • @evankimori
      @evankimori ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Given the sharing aspect and how it tends to be discouraged in most players opinions: does it negatively affect the value on shared rooms?

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I just tested it and engraved constructed walls are not engraved on both sides.
      To repeat the test yourself -> Build a platinum pillar and surround it with 4 platinum floor tiles, then engrave it. Make 4 guildhalls, each being the wall + one of the floor tiles, cycling through each. The guilds will be value 640 on the three non-engraved sides, corresponding to the one platinum floor tile + platinum wall. Only the tile where the engraver was standing on will be more valuable.

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@evankimori Yes it basically wipes out all value from the tile. In classic it was 75% but based on testing the steam version reduced it by something like 99%. That's why I had to build the doors in the video - a shared door connected to a shared wall does not have the value of its tile reduced.

  • @Lexyvil
    @Lexyvil ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Interesting, I did not know that engravings were 1-sided only... Does that mean a lone wall can't be engraved on all 4 sides? Only 1?
    Also, that exploit seems way broken, I hope they fix it eventually. I don't think it was possible to do that in 0.47 since rooms could not be separated into two sections across the entire map.

    • @TexanSangheili1337
      @TexanSangheili1337 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct! Unsure about 2nd.

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Correct - only one side of the wall is engraved so only rooms that contain the tile facing the engraving get the value boost.
      And yeah, I expect this comes from how now rooms are just another flavor of activity zone, so they inherit the ability to be disconnected, I would expect this to be changed. I also think they should consider doing something about the engrave floor values - for walls the value depends on the most prevalent material in the room so you need the majority of the room to be platinum to see the benefit, while for rooms even without the exploit you need like 1-2 statues worth of platinum to get the max tier of value if you have a legendary engraver.

    My current fort Heartlanterns attracted a legendary engraver early on and he has single dwarvenly engraved every single bedroom for a hundred, just the floors in a 5x5 room that good make them all personal palaces for a dwarfs fortress of dreams

    • @cinifiend
      @cinifiend ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had the same thing in my fort. Legendary engravers are one of the most overpowered things in the game. You can mine out a a 7x7 room and put complete dogshit rock furniture in it and engrave the whole thing and it suddenly becomes a royal bedroom.
      If you don't get a legendary engraver by chance I did the math to get one as quickly as dwarvenly possible. Start the embark with one dwarf that has 5 skill levels in engraving (the maximum) that means he has 3500 starting experience. He needs 18000 total to get to legendary meaning he needs 14500 more experience. He gets 10 experience per engraving according to the wiki meaning he needs to do 1450 engravings. Square root of 1450 is 38. So you can mine out and smooth a 38x38 area and get him to engrave the entire thing and you'll have a legendary engraver after about 2 in game years.
      To maximize it even more build his bedroom right next to the practice area and create a small food/drink stockpile that takes from your mainstockpile just for him. Then set up a burrow just for him that he can't leave so he spends all of his time engraving.

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cinifiend I just saw a post on reddit to speed that time up - lock two Dwarves in an engravers guild hall (along with food, drink and bedrooms) and they'll be legendary engravers after a year. I think you might need one to be at least novice in order to have them run training sessions, I'm still looking into the full details of how guild training works.

    I had a master and legendary engraver doing my walls and floors for my noble chambers. I'm not much of a micromanager so I just let them do their own thing. for the queen since she had higher demands, every bit of floor wall in her side of the chambers was platinum. unfortunately my master engraver went to her side in the legendary one went to do the floors and walls of the liaison. there are dozens of masterpiece engravings on the dolomite floors in the liaisons area. and maybe like one in the Queens zone. It ended up not mattering that much, but it was kind of funny that the fancier stuff ended up on the wrong side.
