This is amazing because "Rage" is the first word of the Iliad IN GREEK not English. In English, the first line usually starts as "Sing, goddess..." but beginning with "rage" really highlights the theme of the Iliad: Achilles' rage.
Hopefully this is an indicator of CA hiring good and enthusiastic people who love the source material.
It's Robert Fagles' translation, and it's quite a popular one.
Did you see what the characters looked like? Maybe they appreciate the Iliad, but definitely not the historical Bronze Age Greeks.
@@dixonj41 Archill and Hector yes. The Mycenaean soldiers look accurate, but the Trojan soldiers ... still quite passable (mix of Mycenaean and Hittite culture). Menelaus and Agamemnon also look very good in the other campaign map reveal video (beautiful Mycenaean armor). Let's wait...

@@GermanOlle The problem is that the vases are made much later and therefordepict the armour and weapons of the (e.g) fifth century b.c.; in medieval versions of the greek myths they wear gothic plate.

I've always admired Hector as a character. True ruler, defender of his hometown and family, who fought with the demigod as equal.
He's my favorite character in troy and I'm most excited for his campaign

Troy is terrible adaptation of Iliad... it has tons of inconsistencies, read the book instead
Watch the netflix series it’s pretty good
@@patrykrys... A thing to note, the Iliad doesn't really cover the whole war of Troy, just a small piece. So telling someone to read the book won't really give them what they want to see from the story. The movie might be terrible compared to the original story, but at least it delivered on what the average person expected from a story about Troy (mainly the fact that the horse was there, unlike in the Iliad)
@@Aipe97 if expectations are worse than original I believe it is not enough to match them, also worth noting is the fact that nothing tells the entire story of the war, not the book but nor film, and the horse is a myth related to Iliad but didn't had to be in a film
@@patrykrys... Well the Troy movie did attempt to tell the whole story, not a great one, but an attempt nonetheless. So there's that.
But for real, ask anyone with zero knowledge on greek history what they know about the Trojan war, they'll most likely mention the horse, with Achilles probably coming second. Most pieces of media wanting to cover that story will have to address the horse in one way or another, so while yeah technically not necessary, you may still want to include it if your target audience is more than just the history buffs.
It's like talking about the Persian invasion of Greece and Thermopylae, the Civil War and Gettysburg, the end of the Roman republic and Caesar's murder, WW2 and D-day, the Napoleonic wars and Waterloo, the Sengoku period and Nobunaga's betrayal, the hundred years war and Agincourt. There are just some things that are iconic together, and Troy and the horse is way more iconic than some of the ones I already mentioned.

and considering how stylized the game is, it may only be half paying attention to history anyway, and we have an idea from later italic tribes like samnites how the Villanovans most likely waged war, and they might have borrowed from the greeks a few concepts, having their own stylized equivalents to a few of the same units available to Aeneas

I mean even the whole Achilles-Hector fight was pretty boring in the Iliad...basically Achilles just threw his spear right at the start and killed Hector but we always see a "close" fight

"Swept away, the lumber of the land..." is one of my favorite quotes from Iliad. You might think Homer in context was talking about the deforestation that occured to build the Greek armada that sailed to Troy but it is also a metaphor for all the men and boys that would die during the siege/war.

Already people complaining about "Historical Accuracy" in a game that's based on History that up until 1868 most scholars believed to just be a tale. Amazing that one movie now has people thinking they are History experts.

@@kemalcalsr879 the city states back in ancient Greece and mind you that's proper ancient Greece.. not the one we see in the Roman era .cities were extremely small and manpower "scarce" pe9ple making a huge mistake comparing the Roman era to the classical Greek era in the brone age .and while scholars found the city believed to be troy ,a big portion of it was burnt and turned into ashes when the Greeks captured it and many who fled from troy made their way to Italy through the Aegean and create and founded the early Roman villages.

@doom. i dont think its literal gold. gold is a weak metal, very soft. its a terrible material to use for armor. perhaps the armor had gold inlays, ornamentation and decoration, but a suit made of solid gold would provide poor defense and would break so easily
@doom. are you sure thats not just shining bronze? bronze can give off a gold appearance at times. also if anybody in this battle would have an extremely expensive and pristine suit of armor it would be achilles. look at 15th and 16th century suits of plate armor that knights and men-at-arms would wear, then look at the suits of plate that some kings and nobility would wear. you could tell the wealth and power of somebody just by looking at the armor in a lot of cases
@doom. watching it again and yeah, thats totally bronze armor. people didnt wear gold armor into battle historically for the reasons i mentioned: its too soft and too expensive.
there have been armors from history made with but not entirely of precious metals and stones, but these were ceremonial armors. battle armor could have golden or silver inlay and decoration on its surface, but the metal that the armor itself is made of would be something that can withstand a weapons attack and that varies with the era in question.

TBH, I find twh sieges much more fun and epic than most tw games. Your troops are normally too low for micromanaging and performance reasons, so you end fighting in a damn empty city in other tw games. Prefer to have a strong side siege than a weak full city siege
@@simonsalgueiro6217 But it takes away all the reality and the strategy to defend a full city. In Warhammer as defender you just place your troops on the walls, and that´s basically it. The towers are so op they will do all the work
@@syath1991 Where you playing in easy mode or what? If you just put your troops on the walls you loose against most doomstacks. The strength of cities were hallways etc. And in other tw games in the end most of the troops fought in the exact spot when fighting in a campaign

@@syath1991 If they go a very mythical route it could be, as the mythological aspect of the walls of Troy would be too big for a full city I would say, which was also the issue with wh, those cities needed to be huge and high fantasy to fit the lore. If it's a moderate view of the illyad, then I guess they'll do something similar to three kingdoms

@@Sixeye_ Okay, so let me give a small answer. Was the Illiad true? No. Was it based on a conflict between the Myceneans and the Hittites that might or might not have been exaggerated, that was also supported by the Troy VII, I believe, that corresponds geographically witht the Troy from the illiad, as well as sources of the era from correspondence between Mycenean and Hittite kings? Absolutely.

@@captainfabian I do believe Hisarlik is the location of Troy, but historians are still debating it. The Trojan war just doesn't have enough evidence. We would need a time machine to see if it actually happened.
I hope this focuses on the classical mythology of Greece. Part fantasy; with Gods, heroes and monsters. Part history; with soldiers, generals and empires.
Yeah this, troy movie, & my favorite hero wonder woman makes me want to learn more Greek history!

I want somthing like "Total War: Age of Mythology" An ancient greek setting with mythical creatures like in Age Mytholgy from Microsoft.
basically a Warhammer 2 style Total War but with Greek gods, that'd be fun
Baschybarde Hell yeah, imagine a world where all mythologies, all its gods and monsters, clashed together and dominate the world. Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Norse, Celtic, Germanic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Mesoamerican, African, Hindu, Polynesian, etc. That’d be an epic game. :)

@@Willy2537 i love the idea i just have to add to this: norse and germanic gods are one in the same as norse is germanic, the germanic gods are popularly known to us today by their norse names. slavic gods are almost identical to germanic. you'd have to make germanic paganism its own faction that spans scandinavia, germania and what we now call england. slavic pagan factions would be natural allies to germanic pagans in terms of the games diplomacy. same thing with the greeks and romans... nearly identical gods just different names. they would best be made as one faction as well. im not too well versed on ancient asian religions and mythologies so i cant comment on how i think those should be done in a game like this. as far as europe goes however, id have germanic gods, hellenic gods and celtic gods as their own factions. with celtic gods though, you'd probably have to make the gods of what we now call france and the gods of ireland their own factions. if you look really deep into this though there are so many similarities between celtic and germanic paganism it would be tough to do. im all for a total war mythology game though

Yeah I used to be pretty salty that they never hired Jeff Van Dyck for the music again, but over these latest games this new guy has been doing a pretty good job
@@Aipe97 I've actually been using some of my favorites by Jeff (melee cafe, war of kings and duke of death) as battle music for D&D games, works really well.

With all due respect, it is not my intention to criticise, since I seriously love this ! Total War Troy is a magnificent idea, but I need to point out the obvious, Total War has always being respected for its fidelity when it comes of portraying historical times, and those armors, that both Achilles and Hector are wearing they seem to be too much modern for the ancient times, it looks more like an armor design from the game "Ryse: Son of Rome". I do not wish to bash on your beautiful and amazing work my dear Total War designers and developers, we all love you and something tells me you just wish to add a refreshing tone to an old classic, but I hope those amazing kinda fantasy armor design to have a true reason to be there, like perhaps future projects of mixing historical fidelity with fantasy or myth.
well, they explain in the dev blog that they're aiming to create something in crossroads between myth and history, addind favours of gods, and some mythical beasts, from what I understood. In that case, it's not so surprising that they took the liberty to make armours of heroes a bit more fancy, to make them look more epic and different. I guess the historical accurate armours will be more for regular soldiers, while heroes and creatures will have a very "mythical" look.
I mean, since it's a period full of myths and legends, I don't really mind them no respecting full historical accuracy for the look of the big shots. If they were gonna be going full history, it would be way less interesting, since we already have Rome: 2 Wrath of Sparta for hoplite battles.

@@KakashiKyle9 they went for that look because it gives it a fantastic touch which is what the illiad is, but, i guess if there was a film made in the times it was written, the soldiers would have looked just like rome 2 soldiers (which is what they really looked like)

They seem to be roughly accurate to what we know about the armors of the period. Of coarse Achilles' armor is not very accurate, but considering he's a mythical figure himself, I would personally give it a pass.
The hero armor will always be extravagant because these men were elevated to deities by the Greeks, so any information on them personally so gonna be bloated beyond human limits, so it’s forgiveable as it’s not the entire army going full Warcraft armor

I wouldn't worry about it. They did the same thing with three kingdoms if i remember correctly. I think that one went nearly a year without any new trailers/updates

And CA are taking the "truth behind the myth" approach, so there will be larger than life characters, military units that may be the cause of a myth etc etc. So what "historical accuracy" are they missing?

@@itnotmeitu3896 I kind of understand both sides. Empire was an interesting concept with line battle, proper arties, and international trades, as well as also featuring multiple continents.
It was, however, buggy as hell, and the combat was pretty much screwed up. Empire was bad due to lack of polishing. The idea was great, and at least the naval battles were fun. With better mechanics it could work.
@@itnotmeitu3896 combat was hard to make work in empire, if they had the combat system from Cossacks where you choose when your men fire rather than just walking into the enemy and shooting them from max distance it might be a good game
