I used to suffer from sleep paralysis when I was a child and teen, but it went away. I might even have beaten it myself.
It almost always happened when I tried taking a nap during the day, rarely at night and it was really spooky stuff until I learned about what sleep paralysis is as an adult.
It would always start with a intense buzzing and humming sound, like static on a radio or an old TV and then I would feel how something scary, some form of entity, like a half transparent shadow would approach my bed and loom over me while I couldn't move.
Reading Stephen King's "It" as a child helped me. In it he describes the "Ritual of Chudd" where you defeat a demon by challenging it to a duel of the mind and metaphorically biting into its tongue and not letting go till it begs for mercy.
So when it happened again, I would become really aggressive and confrontational, mentally challenging the shadow to a fight and while I couldn't really bite it's tongue, I imagined turning into a powerful beast, usually a large crocodile for some reason and just rip the shadow to pieces in my mind.
The last few times it happened I got outright giddy with anticipation. "So, you came back to get your ass kicked again?" I was thinking.
Shortly after that it stopped for good.
I'm not saying that I believe in supernatural stuff and I somehow defeated a demon or something, but I do think I kind of healed myself from the sleep paralysis affliction somehow though some form of self-hypnosis or by taking charge of my dreams.
Now it kind of is my go-to without even thinking about it. Even in regular nightmares, I always turn into a crocodile or some sort of monster and turn it around on whatever is coming after me in the nightmare. I'm strangely aggressive and predatory in my dreams, always hunting down, fighting and mauling the scary stuff instead of being afraid of it. It is as if in my dreams the ability to fear was replaced with a single minded chain dog-like bloodlust and aggression.

I have a cousin who suffered an episode of sleep paralysis while in a medical surgery.
My cousin who I used to be friends with, suffered a lot of knee injuries throughout his life whilst playing various sports like football and hockey. He eventually got a major knee surgury done in the hospital. He was given some form of anesthesia, which later became futile after the surgery commenced. He was a very large man, both in weight and height and was very athletic; I reckon the anesthesia was just unable to accommodate his large frame. He woke up mid-surgery and felt EVERYTHING. He described it as the worst pain one could possibly imagine, and that it felt like it lasted for HOURS. He even mentioned that he cried throughout it but was stuck in his paralyzed body and could not move nor communicate. It was quite a traumatic experience, no doubt.
Has anything like this ever happen to anyone else? Seriously… sleep paralysis ain’t no joke.

    • @robindeanna1323

I don't think this is the same thing as sleep paralysis, I think this is just anesthesia failing to keep him under. This has unfortunately been known to happen to some people, anesthesiologists discuss this.

I used to get sleep paralysis a lot--about every other day when I was in my late teens. The most important thing when it happens is to remain completely calm and relaxed. If you relax and don't try to move, it usually goes away very quickly. However, if you fight it and try to move, then the sleep paralysis lasts longer, and you're more likely to start getting the hallucinations.

But thanks God that TH-cam now exists to educate young people whose families do not take seriously enough when they cry for help. I've had sleep paralysis a couple times before and I'd like to leave some tips to prevent anything too scary happening. These are personal things that I do and I have no idea if it works for everyone but just in case I'll post something here.
-I've noticed that most of the times I've had sleep paralysis it's when I sleep on my back so I strictly sleep on my side. It's to the point where I actually can't sleep on my back anymore but I haven't had very many experiences w sleep paralysis since I've started doing it. This doesn't completely prevent it though.
-When I wake up I always keep my eyes closed until I know I can move. This has probably saved me a few times from seeing some nasty hallucination.
-If I wake up and I can't move, I keep my eyes closed no matter what. I've learned that opening my eyes and seeing something nasty is worse than being scared but not seeing anything. Then you just have to keep trying to move until you actually can. After that you should be good to go.
I hope that this can help someone, I know it can be super scary believe me, I've seen some very crappy things that left me a bit on edge before. But I've adapted and if I can I think anyone who struggles with this can too.

I have a horrible anxiety disorder, and thus sleep paralysis is almost a part of my life. It happens every two weeks, maybe, and when it happens I already know what it is, so I simply remain calm, try not to move, and breath very slowly and lightly. That way I get to focus and slowly gain control over my muscles. That doesn't prevent me from getting up with my heartbeat at a thousand percent, of course, but it helps me go back to sleep soundly.

Purely terrifying. It has been happening to me 3-4 times a month since I was 14, so 20 years I’ve been dealing with it. This is how it goes for me…it starts out with a high pitched ringing sound, that continues to get louder with a slight static. As if you turned up a speaker system really high without playing any music. Sometimes I can hear a rope tightening. Then I can feel the sheets move underneath me, as if I’m being pulled off the bed, or a floating sensation. I cannot move, or talk. At this point I close my eyes because I know what’s coming…usually it’s a super old woman standing next to me, whispering really fast, or it’s a really tall dark manly figure standing in the corner of the room, laughing under his breath. If I keep my eyes open, all hell breaks loose. I’ll float toward the closet, or the old woman will rub her face on mine. Incredibly terrifying. And this is just what usually happens. Sometimes though, it’s way worse…my best advise to anyone dealing with this, is when it starts, keep your eyes closed and focus on falling asleep the best you can, no matter what you hear or feel. This is long winded and I apologize! Just wanted to leave my mark for ppl researching this.

I wasn’t the only thing I saw, I also saw this black human like figure above me (if I remember clearly. I saw myself like that for a few minutes. Until my vision went blank, still couldn’t move. Then the flashing lights came for a few seconds, it sent tingles down my body, I felt someone almost pressing on me. Then I woke, covered in a cold sweat and I was breathing super hard. Oh a tip to get out of it. If your mouth is closed push air out of your mouth thus is opens. Also breathe heavier (not scared just heavy) so that your muscles will eventually start moving. If you mouth open then just keep breathing heavy. Ive been doing this for years and it works everytime. Just make sure that you get up and stay up for at least 10 minutes before going back to sleep.

@@nala2814 yes because you are still breathing. If you are calm enough breathing becomes easier so make sure to calm yourself after realizing you are paralyzed. Also think happy things so your mind doesnt play tricks and scare you. If you mouth is closed by default there is still enough room for air to get out. Just breath heavy, calm but heavy. When your mouth is closed and you push air out that starts movements to your facial muscles therefore eventually waking you up. If mouth open then just do the breathing technique.

I definitely believe that if we put good energy out into the universe & surround ourselves with that positivity that it brings good into our lives. I also think bad energy can build up in one place & cause weird sh*t to happen..
Calling this phenomenon sleep paralysis is a way of trying to explain something that is unexplainable.
There is no way that I'm half asleep when it happens to me.
The first time, my friend woke me up with a phone call, crying because her pet just died. We talked for at least 15 minutes.
All I did was lay back down & put my arm over my head after we hung up.
Then I felt pressure on my body, the room was hazy, almost like spinning.. it's hard to explain.. but once it stopped spinning, there were two entities dressed in black, one was standing over me, the other was kneeling on the bed next to me. I couldn't see their faces cuz my arm was in the way. They stood there talking to each other. The one kneeling on my bed was a woman, the other was a man. I can't remember a word they said I was too freaked out & very confused. My brain was so foggy during those few minutes, I thought my phone-that was still in my hand- was a can of soup.. 🤷‍♀️ 🤨🤔 I tried to throw it & realized I couldn't move. Finally they went away, but ever since then, whatever it is comes at least once a month.
When I tell other's about the stuff I've seen & heard over the years, every single person gets goosebumps & asks me to stop cuz they have a bad feeling.
There's something that attached itself to me when my family moved years ago.
I kept telling everyone the house was haunted. It wasn't till my grandparents came to stay that my family finally believed me. My grandma said that her & my nephew were being followed. We moved a month later.
I've always wondered why it attached itself to me. I have a large family, but for some reason, part of the whatever was in that house clung onto me & has never left.

If anybody had sleep paralysis for the first time and is panicking. Here is what I did when I was worried to sleep the next night
    1. I prayed, but you can do a meditation or just simply skip this step.
    2. Grab your plushie, it helps feeling that someone is there to keep you safe.
    3. Wear your favourite pj's, feeling comfy makes me feel so much better.
    4. Writing down stuff, I wrote something that will make me laugh, for me "Calm down Jamal". It really helped me. I like to think positive when in bad situations. I also just wanna say after having sleep paralysis once, I'm not scared of everything. Spider's still care me but, scary movies don't. If you made it through it, I literally love you, and if you didn't it's ok, it gets better!

I was really lucky that when I first experienced sleep paralysis I already knew quite some important things about it, from reading about it and because some family members also suffer from it. It was still very unpleasant because I was afraid of seeing horrible things (but luckily I had no visual hallucinations yet), but since I knew what was going on and that it's not dangerous helped me a lot. Now most episodes I find rather annoying than terrifying.

I've been suffering from sleep paralysis episodes for most of my life, starting when I was about 7 years old. I'm 30 now. Even though it doesn't happen every night, I have a whole lot of experiences with it. I've had times where I just powered through it and decided not to wake up, which led to some very lucid and weird dreams. Other times, things were going on that made me want to wake up immediately. The most memorable time from my childhood included a small, tornado like vortex raging above my body while hearing the sounds of whispering voices in my ears.

  • @kaysmoke_

Just had sleep paralysis last night. It’s always terrifying cause you remember every single detail while it’s happening. It only occurs when I’m under a great amount of stress and/or going through extreme anxiety. After watching a few videos and reading comments, it seems like I have to stop trying to force my body to awake & relax. I must admit, that’s going to be challenging because I always feel like somebody is chasing me or trying to kill me that’s why I want to snap out of it desperately. I’m thankful this doesn’t happen often. 🙏🏾

I have experienced it twice in less than a month. The first time happened when I moved to a new house, I had no AC and no curtains so the room was bright due to the street lights. I was sharing the room with my brother and grandma. We just had a ceiling fan installed that made a really annoying sound all night that barely let me sleep. I remember the episode vividly. I could only hear the fan making that annoying sound and saw my brother staring at me without even blinking, I did felt like something was on top of my chest making it difficult to breathe, I tried to move without success and also tried to scream. I then realized it wasn’t real because no one could hear me so I closed my eyes and tried to sleep again.

I think I experienced sleep paralysis just last night. I remember being awake, and I knew I was awake. I could feel that I was in my own actual body, but it was strange. It felt heavy, too heavy to move, and all I could move were my eyes.
In terms of hallucinations, that part was pretty limited, at least in this particular scenario. I sleep with the kind of pillow that has the little arms and that you can just sit back on without it slumping or whatever.
I’m usually mostly on my side with most of my face stuffed into one of the arms, so my vision is pretty limited. I’m not entirely sure, but I feel like that kind of protected me from the terror of the episode 😅

The first time I had a paralysis episode (age 12) I didn’t know what paralysis was, I actually thought I had died but was stuck in “purgatory” (my dad had recently explained to me what purgatory was at the time) the fact that I can hear everything that was going on around me was so frightening. I kept hoping that somebody would come and wake me since I was the last one still in bed, but nobody did. I got out of it by just relaxing my mind and going back to sleep. When I woke up for the second time for real, I was so frustrated and upset that nobody knew what I was experiencing when I had explained to them the situation. After looking up the symptoms I was having I came to the conclusion that I had Sleep Paralysis. However when people were describing their experiences they mentioned being able to see where there are and sometimes see shadow or demons. In my experience I have never been able to open my eyes and see anything, just darkness like my eyes are closed. I am now 22 years old and still have episodes here and there, I actually just had one before going to TH-cam to see if any new discovery’s have been made since my first time lmao 😂 but till this day never met anyone who has had the same experience as me when it comes to not having my eyes open or seeing shadow figures sucks bc I wish I had more ppl that relate 😪

I always had weird sleepwalking experiences but recently just had my first sleep paralysis, i did have my eyes open the whole time so i cant relate to your experience completely, but i also did not see anything weird or out of ordinary, i just could not move at all. I had my phone on with a movie on, and all i could do was just stare at it for like over 30 minutes while trying to move my body to call somebody for help. Whats more weird is that i realized mid way that i was experiencing the sleep paralysis and only after i gave up on getting up and calling for help, i was finally able to move and geab my phone. I never experienced the hallucinations either, but my eyes were open the whole time and i knew it was happening

This is happening to me since I was 13, im 25 now. Tho I never experienced a demon or succubus being on my chest, its just me lying on bed, cant move but can see my family walking by while me having sleep paralysis. The feeling you want to shout for help but you cant speak and the more you try, the more you cant breath 😂
The worst sleep paralysis I've ever experienced was like im experiencing astral projection x Happy Death day situation (if u know the movie). That night, I "woke" up in our living room, im lying on our sofa, I cant move, I kept on struggling but the more I do, the more I cant breath. Then I did one really hard push to my body, to forced myself to wake up. But Instead of waking up, my soul get out of my body, I actually saw myself sleeping. Im like swimming in the air. I tried swimming upstairs to my sister's room to get some help, but whenever I reach the door, there's a bright light that always appear, making my vision all white, then boom. Next thing I know Im lying down on the sofa again, repeating the same thing again and again. Forced my self to wake up, my soul getting out my body, swim to my sister's room, open the door, bright light, then "wake up". I think I did it more than 10 times. It was really exhausting. And I remember the only time I beat it was when I already give up. Like i have that " fuck off just get me if you want me. Just let me die. I will never fight this stupid thing ever again" moment. Then I woke up 😂😂 and thats the time I discovered how to beat this thing. Just let go. Dont fight. Stay calm. Let your body sinks down the bed. Know when to push to wake up.
Now im done with it. Sometimes I still experience it, but not the same as before. I just have times in my dreams that I cant move or breath. I still have my mini heart attacks but its not the same as before.
I think having sleep paralysis is just an easy level when you have Depersonalization/Derealization disorder. Try to search it up. Its worse than sleep paralysis 😂😂.
Thats all. Sorry for my long story and bad english 😂😂

I had this happen to me for the first time a few weeks ago, it left me severely rattled. I knew about the phenomenon, and knew to close my eyes once I realized what was happening, but that didn't stop the fear when it happened. I woke up to a very tall and slender but wide-shouldered man with a lean face and short hair looking down at me from the side of my bed, right next to me (his knees were aligned with my arms, he was that close), and at first I only saw his face which seemed normal, but then I looked into his eyes. Ohh god those eyes...
You know in the new It movie, how the monsters dead lights looked? Bright pinpoints of light behind the eyes, and once I looked into those lights I was absolutely paralyzed by fear, and I mean _paralyzed,_ my mind stopped working and all I knew was fear, nothing else, just light and fear. I remember a fragment of memory passing through my mind telling me to close my eyes, and the instant I did I woke up heaving air like I was in shock (well I mean, I pretty much was), like when the back of your throat closes up and you can barely breathe and you have to fight for the air, or kind of like when you've been underwater for too long too, but it was just a reaction to the fear.
And I'm not a guy that scares easy, I haven't woken up from a nightmare since I was like 12, and I don't believe in any heeby jeeby superstitious bullshit either and I still don't, but that experience was as close as I've come to believing in it. The menace and evil I felt coming from that man's eyes will haunt me for the rest of my days, I didn't know it was even possible to feel fear like that, it was 1000x more intense than any fear I have _ever_ felt before in my life. Sleep Paralysis is no goddamn joke, I knew it sounded kind of scary but until you experience it, you just have no idea how bad it can be. Rattled me _hard._

i experienced it just a few minutes ago when trying to fall asleep. i slept on my back (big mistake because its advised to not sleep on your back if you have sleep paralysis) and my face was covered with my blanket, but i saw a demon with claws moving as if it was trying to kill me. the surroundings were blue in color and because i remember watching a video on sleep paralysis i was told to wiggle my toes, which i did and in a few seconds those hallucinations went away and i could move again. ive experienced sleep paralysis before this, just 2 days ago i had one when i slept on my side (i didnt hallucinate that time) and a few months ago when i slept on my stomach and still got sleep paralysis (but i didnt hallucinate, i guess it's because of my sleeping posture) but what happened a few minutes ago scared the living shit out of me. im so thankful it only lasted for a couple of seconds.

I have suffered from sleep paralysis as long as i can remember and no matter how many times it has happened, the effect has not changed at all. It is still as scary now as it was 20 years ago. The real torture is knowing my son is asleep in the next room, i see something moving in my room but can not move to go protect my son, nor am i able to yell to get his attention.
I now sleep with the TV on every night, dont see the shadows or hear any sounds due to the light and volume from my TV. It has really helped.
