- In this vlog, I'll give my honest opinion about living in the Philippines in 2023 as a Digital Nomad. I tried living on 3 different islands for a month. Watch until the end to see how the lifestyle in the Philippines really is and if it's worth it to move there!

I believe that’s the very reason why the few expats who live in Siargao prefer it over Bali - it is because it hasn’t become like Bali yet. That’s exactly the charm of Siargao. They’d like to keep it that way. I think you’re better off in Bali and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a matter of lifestyle preference that doesn’t fit in a particular place no matter how beautiful it is to others.
Yes for sure! And that's the exact reason I'd like to spend more time in Siargao, but I need a better internet for that, that's why I'm hoping for it😄

yeah Bali now is getting over development because of the cheap property there, compare to Siargao, and it's becoming dirty already, I'd been there and need to run 2kms going to the airport because of the heavy traffic. This is the problem to most of the popular destinations. Better let's keep the best places here in the Philippines secret for us to enjoy lols.
if you want a party, women, beaches etc. go to Bali, and Thailand,but if you're looking for relaxation, natures,white beaches, no language barrier, go to the Philippines.

Not being able to communicate, relate and trust are deal killers for Thailand and winners for the Philippines. There’s Orr to a place than beaches, infrastructure and internet.
My take on this, it would be better for places in the Philippines to remain in that status so that the environment and nature can be taken care of and not be commercialized like other places in SEA. When all the infrastructure for tourism is good, tourists can flock to areas that can be damaged by over-tourism. It is still better to maintain the simplicity of places and stay away from commercialism. In that way, there is no risk to change the simple behavior of the locals and thus will not become materialistic due to the development of the areas.

@@JooseTheNomadThat’s what happened to Boracay. 30 years ago it was new and then it became so popular it was always overcrowded and busy. It may be better now bec many have been to Boracay but when it was the IT beach everyone had to go there
That’s what I fear also. They are starting to build more and more resorts in Balabac, Palawan. In Siargao, managing the solid waste products is an increasing problem due to the massive influx of migrants and tourists. If the municipal officials don’t act fast to remedy the problem, the locals will surely suffer and Siargao will become another Boracay before it was shutdown for massive cleanup.
watching the latest El Nido vids and it is starting to get overcrowded. Another vlogger even mentioned that the locals there are different and less friendly, where interaction are seen in a 'business' point of view. very much like boracay 😢
We are from Cebu and Bohol and I rather have them not be overpopulated with tourist, although tourism brings the $$$ it also brings more trash, bad behavior and illegal activity. Bohol especially, I would like to kept it as is, keep its natural wonders and not overdevelop. Alona beach is already packed and looking like little Boracay. I remember when growing up there were only fishing boats on its shores where we buy the local catch or catch the fish ourselves. The world is growing though it seems.

My take on this is that countries should focus on digital nomads as they usually stay longer and are more responsible and actually care about the destinations ans not only their own enjoyment for few days😊
agree with you, jet. Ive been to Bohol many years ago and im afraid many tourists are beginning to flock over there and it may eventually lose its peaceful nature. I also heard its getting more and more expensive. I just hope we can find a good balance between bringing in tourism and preserving the islands
Also think it's important to remember that Siargao is in a huge growth phase only now. Airlines only starting flying directly to the island in 2016, and look at how fast word has got out about Siargao. Before 2016 it was like a 15 hour boat ride to Siargao from Cebu?!

We can't turn each place to replicate another of our preference. Because if we can then the world will be monolitic. As a take away Siargao is a new found tourism island destination. Its charm is its remoteness, it being less touristy and being raw. Maybe if you can not get the vibe you are looking for in Siargao pick another island remember there's 7 thousand islands in the Philippines all you have to do is research and head in to 1 to see how it is. But yes I beleive Bali is another level, but I beleive that it is at that level because there's just limited options in Indonesia to stay as an Expat where in the Philippines being A Christian country the whole of it is your playground. That is why expats in the Philippines is really dispersed among its thousand of islands and long coastline and mountaineous terrain.
Yes I just hope I could stay longer on an island I love, that's all :) a little bit better internet is not much change needed, I also don't want Siargao to turn to a new Bali😄
Wherever your heart desires!! Keep in mind Philippines has 7,600 islands only 2000 only inhabited the rest are uninhabited so in the future those islands will be developed or at least be livable. Keep your energy going as Theres more and more fun in the Philippines! Be safe and have fun in the Philippines 🇵🇭!!

The world in this generation is often fast changing especially the nature cause of climate change and because also of fast phase progress of modern technology. maybe now the Philippines is still a paradise of so many beautiful stunning gift of Nature from our God in heaven but tomorrow we don't know so while we can enjoy it let's not waste the time coz we don't know what tomorrow will bring

Good video. I live in the Philippines and each persons needs are different. The one thing I really enjoy about the Philippines is how easy it is to get away from all thr expats. Looks like each place you visited was with a high consentration of foreigners. I think the more you can get away from those places the better the Filipino experience will be.

Also Philippines 🇵🇭 is for people who love simple life and with heart of contentment. And for people who really have money to spend and never complain of higher prices, the people who loves luxurious life with means to do so. Those are the ones who stay longer in the country. 🧐

Have you ever tried the areas and beaches of towns/provinces in the outskirts of Metro Manila like Batangas, Zambales, Pangasinan, La Union and many more. Zambales and La Union are also sites of surfing. since you have mentioned your issues about internet and food.
I T and Digital will be improving in the Philippines because of the new administration plans for energy for a nuclear power plant and continuing infrastructure development.

Bali is only one place in Indonesia not like in our country. We have a lot of tourist destination, like siargao, Palawan, Cebu , dumaguete . And also in north a of beaches mountains etc.. we have a

Lol as in 2021 about 16milions tourist visited Indonesia, and only about 7 million make Bali as their final destination
That's why it's called tourists destinations because it's frequented by tourists, those you mentioned above are vloggers destinations. Lombok get tourists, so is Komodo islands, raja ampat, triton bay, togian, Singaporean do short escapes to Bintan and anambas, pro surfers love Mentawai islands and Nias. Wake up, Indo is 17,508 islands and 6,5 times bigger than PH in land size.
The Philippines is still behind in terms of tourism in general and still has a lot of catching up to do in terms of Tourism infrastructure versus Bali or places in Thailand as rightly pointed out by others. Having said that, it's kinda an advantage if you don't like swells of crowds and mass tourism which is evident in Bali or places in BKK. This part I like personally.
Have to agree that Internet still sucks in Siargao and places like El Nido or Coron in Palawan. So its just impossible to stay long term to work remotely when you can't have a decent video call or even just email stuff. Its very frustrating even for locals.
Hence, for now, it's great for short visits but not as a place for digital nomads who work on the go.
You're wrong! Go to Philippines and you will see that tourist infra in Philippines is better now and have ongoing construction of BIG Infra ptojects for tourist, Fyi foreign tourists who are going to Philippines is on the rise now a days, and internet in Palawan or Siargao or C😊oron are fair better in speed its depend on the cost.and today starlink invest in Philippines so soon Philippines has issued internet at par to the rest of the world.
@Bern I'm right. I'm local and talking out of my personal experience having visited pretty much all popular and less popular Philippine tourist destinations fairly recently having stayed in El Nido, Siargao, Boracay for more than a week at a time in the last 2 years while also working remotely. And I can tell you that aside perhaps from Boracay, Internet and mobile data in El Nido and Siargao are just slow. Compared to other popular tourist destinations in Asean, they have higher and more stable speeds even from many years ago. Much better transportation infrastructure too. We are still playing catch up with our neighbors which is good. And that's a fact and it's okay to play catch up. Ask anyone who are well traveled in Asean.
@@qan2boy Yeah, noticed a lot of improvements and projects the last time I visited but internet was weak. Hopefully it will be better next time I visit because my kids will be with me. Agree with your statement Philippines is still playing catch up...as you said, it's okay.

I’m not sure why someone came and blindly denied your experience, but as a digital nomad I found it hard to stay in Siargao (and to a lesser extent, non-Manila/Cebu PH) and do productive, even moderately data-intensive work. It isn’t a knock on what is otherwise a wonderful place, just a realistic depiction of where the tourism/business infrastructure is.

It would be quite tragic to see Siargao - or any tourists' spot in the Philippines, for that matter - go to the likes of Phuket or, even, Bali. Sadly, Boracay is slowly headed that way.
Phuket is a scam. My landlord was born and raised in Bangkok and said Phuket is the most expensive place in Thailand. Between the jet ski scams and the coffee shops in Phuket that tell you that you have to spend $15 minimum if using credit card, after you already drank your $5 coffee. :(
When you travel to the Philippines, you can explore a lot of choices of popular islands to visit of different vibe,differnt from each other) like Palawan (spectacular limestone cliffs rock formation),Boracay( stunning sunsets)Bohol(Chocolate hills tarsiers, scuba diving,dolphins tour) Siargao(surfing), CEBU(adventure Canyoneering whale sharks, Sardine run), Romblon Leyte, Camiguin( they all have beautiful sand Bars
While in Indonesia you will notice that in you tube social media it's only concentrated in Bali, in fact it is more popular than its country itself, some vlogger comparing it to a country not to another island countepart, check it out

Yes there's a lot of projects I've seen in the development pipeline for Siargao that will make it rival Bali in a year or two! Yacht club being built and boat parties being organised, more surf camps and pubs in the north of the island! Exciting times :)

Ok, he struck out on the social aspect but the info and perspective is still valuable. Don’t take it personally. The PH has some development yet to do and he’s correct about that.
However, there’s this. In the PH, I have smiling, English speaking Filipinos helping me with everything and trying to make sure that I’m having a good time. Sometimes, what the heck, really. If you have a problem or chore and 50 people show up to help you and then make it a party. Yeh, you cannot find that anywhere else in the world. Maybe he should stay longer next time and really get to know this country.

@@JooseTheNomad, I truly understand you. I am a digital nomad too. I love Siargao and want to stay longer but need a better internet connection. Hope they will have a good internet soon. But in Boracay, there is a digital nomads community there. And a good internet connection. I stayed there for 3 months, and like 2 mins walk from the beach. I so love the white beach of Boracay is the best. The best 3 months and sunset were amazing.

@@JooseTheNomad yes not only locals but national gov. too. staycation concept is not new to the Philippines, since early 2000's multiple projects was propose to support that industry but everytime it was rejected by national and local gov. we took notice whats happening around the world we don't want to end up like mexico panama other sea nation and now colombia, where local tourist is being force out of thier own tourist destination. we support local tourist too.

@@JooseTheNomad Philippines tourism is always been dominated by local tourist, foreign tourist arrival is at 5-6m only yearly mostly short term. there are 15m Filipinos who work overseas and goes home yearly and take a short vacation with their families, and people from manila area does the samething too. its just Philippines has a different approach to tourism compare to other countries in the region.

SIARGAO is a small island while Bali is a BIG Island.. the cost of living and prices in Siargao are higher because of its location same as the internet since its a small island no cables from the mainland unlike BALI same as exporting and importing foods it goes through the boats thats why...
I dated a woman in Laguna province for 1 year, which connects to Manila. I was so unhappy living there. It was so expensive too. $36-$46 for terrible hotel rooms. I went to Thailand after that year and never looked back. I still think I probably should try Cebu and Dumaguete area and give it another chance though. Thailand just has better infrastructure and the hotels only charge me $15-$20 for a nice air conditioned hotel room.

@@JooseTheNomad I was going to school in Bangkok and living in On Nut. In On Nut it is just the normal working class Thai people and the college students live there as well.

You should visit BGC, it's cleaner and more modern than Makati, Manila. Siargao has been hit by typhoon the past year, so there are still things to improve on the island.

If beautiful place is perfect it will get overrun and made not perfect. Need to make it difficult to be totally comfortable to ever have a chance for it to remain “close to perfect”😎😊

i am referring to cebu city, actually (in terms of interconnectivity)
cebu province & its islands (camotes, bantayan, malapascua, sumilon, mactan, olango, badian island, etc.) may not have strong internet connection, but these islands offer interesting sights to behold
btw, starlink (a satellite internet constellation operated by spaceX, can function before and after a massive supertyphoon) has slowly been utilized in the country (mostly provinces)
i guess, in asia, starlink is only available in the philippines because of the periodic weather disturbances, which occurred alot of times in the country
elon musk had chosen the philippines as it's pilot area, all because philippines is regularly visited by typhoon and even supertyphoon (like category 5 odette and yolanda)
in the future, they might enhance or improve the starlink network
it's sad that resilient filipinos are exposed to heavy, massive and destructive typhoons -- year in, year out
but during "habagat" season (from mid-may to mid-november), bicol and luzon region are the hardest hit by typhoon
during "amihan" season (from mid-november to mid-march), visayas and mindanao are the hardest hit
meaning: it's nice to have a shelter in luzon and another shelter in visayas or mindanao -- to escape the super-wet, monsoon season (you know what i mean)
the nearby islands of cebu: bohol, negros, siquijor, leyte, biliran, masbate and even kalanggaman island and camiguin, give you wider perspective of what tropical island living is all about
it's true that the philippines is not a "vegan paradise" unlike bali, thailand, vietnam, cambodia, or even china, 'coz philippine food is a fusion of malay, indonesian, chinese, american, spanish and mexican -- where there's heavy emphasis on animal protein than plant-based protein
not many know it, cebu is a fruit, vegetable & flower basket and even part of the seafood supply chain in the region
in fact, neighboring provinces buy fruits, veggies, spices, herbs and most of all, variety of flowers (being shipped regularly) from cebu
We just added 5G at our new house in Clarin, Bohol of all places an hour from Tagbilaran, definitely barrio land. Speed of 200 mbs and only for $40 per month, now that is not bad. Also, have a farm there with 5,000 cacao trees, 500 bananas and 500 coconuts. Maybe I should start a tourist farm tour of sort and make some $$$$. T-shirt anyone?

I can’t stand these “I lived here for 30 days” because you can not fully tell what a place is like in only 30 days. Live in a country for 6 months to a year then you can talk about “would I live here?”.
He is a Nomad. He is honest about that. Some people prefer that way...
I travel the world and easily know after 30 days whether I want to live in any given place.
After my first month in the Philippines in 2015, I've lived in the Philippines 6 of the past 9 years. I knew I wanted to live here after a month, no question.
I don't think to know "fully" is the goal, just gives me a better idea as a digital nomad, and as somebody who had stayed in Davao, Philippines for 2 months last year, it was helpful.

Yes but also that sometimes doesn't work or is extremely slow, in my experience at least!
Some foreigners cant really stay in Manila or makati because they only have limited income. They are looking for much cheaper. Normally, who stays in makati are business people.

Starlink is now flooding Siargao. Every household will start to own one. Internet would not be an issue in the next 12 months.

Yes, Its price range is almost the same with fiber internet very competitive. Starlink is cheaper in the Philippines, it is only Php2700 per month or $50/mos.
