Road racing is a great unstructured training method for amateur triathletes as well. Definitely comes in handy when doing draft-legal short distance triathlon. To some extent, the average speed isn’t important. You are in a bunch which pulls you along much faster than you’d expect you can manage. What’s important is the acceleration during attacks. I’m surprised this wasn’t mentioned because it’s what catches new racers out - sudden high power which triathletes never need to train for. A few sessions which include some short (15-30s) all out efforts will help you prepare.

I think we need to get Simon out of his comfort zone and get him to try a triathlon, if he's a sh*t swimmer then he should just try a duathlon at least.

You don't drop back to cat4 once you have made it to cat3. It's only E/1/2 who drop categories when don't maintain enough points annually. I've been cat 3 for two years and havnt got a single point since moving up.

Thanks for that: I thought I was going nuts/the rule had changed. Its been >10 years since I raced but that was what happened back then. I wonder if it was a 3/4 race or if they gave them dispensation to let Si in.

One for GTN can Si do a triathlon, most triathletes, in my view can cycle ok.however unless you have raced draft legal, crit racing like this, with group riding, would be a challenge, and I do hear there are quite a few crashes in crits ?

Do you have to have drop bars to race? Like are flat bars not permitted?

Was wondering about the same. I doubt it, but would be nice if gcn would clarify why they put the emphasis on that.

Can't speak for British cycling, but in the US drop bars are required for mass-start races.

Triathletes typically use TT handlebars (I don't think allowed) I think Si was referring to that.

Tom Perotti Is that to avoid wide bars? Why not simply put a limit to bar width

Yeah drop bars are a requirement.

Do you need drop handle bars? I have a road bike but I think it would be funny if I road my old steel bike
