THANK YOU. This totally smashed it. I followed the video virtually to the letter. I installed Linux Mint on a little laptop (1.2Ghz, 4GB ram, no GPU ram, 32GB SSD), and then followed the guide to install retro pie. I had an old USB gamepad knocking about, plugged it in and it all worked! It has six buttons and two triggers so was ideal for NES, and Megadrive.
You are the only person I’ve been using to set up my retro stations thank you so much it’s a fun project to do since I’m just stuck at home all lonely.

@@bernardoreyes5661 N64 works fine, although there are issues with some cores on getting the audio output to the correct devise, pulseaudio issues, haven't tried and GC games.

I really can't thank you enough for this video. I have done this on 4 desktops (Dell OptiPlex 790's and 990's) I got cheap, and 2 Dell Latitude laptops. I have also done this for several friends (at no charge) since I'm having a blast doing it. Now we are all trying to set up the only multiplayer in retroarch!

ETA you sound so damn clear on all your vids it sonds like you are recording audio after the video but its clear you are just using a external / headset mic - i'm curious what microphone are you using in your videos.. sounds great all the time!
tip: if you have a really old PC that can't boot from a USB, get a CD (or a floppy if you still have one) and then burn plop boot manager to it, if that still doesn't work, go into setup>boot manager>toggle force usb 1.1 to mode 1.
This is really cool. I was looking for how to install retropie on pc long time ago but i don't need it anymore because I bought premium Launchbox. This is still good stuff though if you don't have bigbox.

How does this compair with Recallbox/ batocera? Isnt this a way better option if you have a discrete GPU? From what I can tell, batocera flat out does not support gtx 10 series GPUs and has limited GPU support on general.

I currently have a really good 128gig Retropie image for my Pie. I tried to convert it to work on a PC but had limited success. I installed retropie onto my PC and then dragged over the rom folders from my other image. Some miss shaders, some dont work and others work fine. I was wondering if one day you might do a video about converting an image file from Retropie to working on a PC. Thanks Mr Prime ;)
you always seem to be reading my mind with videos... I was just thinking to myself a day or so ago about retro pie on Ubuntu, because I have a new install of Lubuntu on one of those HP Elitedesk desktops in my living room with my main raspberry pie with retro-pie sitting next to it and it got me thinking. Thanks for another great video. Something you may find interesting is I have installed Ubuntu studio to an external hard drive as if it was an internal drive and it boots from it just like a live boot USB stick but its a full install like the hard drive was internal. I have yet to test it with a USB stick because I don't have any spare sandisk sticks. I was also successful with installing Prime Os android to a USB stick as a full installation as if it was an internal drive. it runs slow because the stick is slow but it works. Both installs required no special setup just select the external drive for installation. So in theory you could run the Ubuntu retro-pie from and external drive so you don't have to mess with an existing setup.
Great video, but it would be more interesting to install Kubuntu (KDE Interface) or Xubuntu (XFCE Interface) or even Lubuntu (LXDE/LXQT) Are lighter than standard Ubuntu with Gnome...
Is there a way to run an image from arcadepunks? I know u need emulation station but was wanting to basically turn my old pc into a raspberry pi to play arcade games on my arcade1up. No sense in buying a pi when i have spare pcs laying around. Some info from someone would be greatly appreciated.

Hey I've had success using etcher to burn Recalbox to an internal HDD to do something similar and would be a good video to do along these same lines for someone who would like something like this but also have a built-in Kodi. It turned an old laptop into a great portable entertainment machine.

One other thing, You know how Ubunto can operate live from a USB stick on any PC, Id love to know how to make a 'live' retro gaming USB stick with preloaded games and settings. Preferably a setup where settings changes were saved onto the same boot stick.
you can 100% make a retropie live usb! i made it using rufus and a fast usb drive (usb 3.0) then you can turn the persistance slider after selecting ubuntu iso and then i installed retro pie! look up ubuntu live usb with persistance if you want to do it.
If you have a hidden network Ubuntu will not let you use your wifi. You may want to ipdate your video. You also can just write the Retropi image tp a hard drive instead of an sd card and then put it in the PC.
If i can't boot Batocera then not much chance booting to Unbuntu from USB, I think you'll find you need to change in BIOS UEFI to Legacy or ACHI or Vise Versa to show the USB as Bootable, No reason a PC or Laptop not to Boot is set right
What if when you search for the Rpie shortcut it doesn't find anything. I can run retropie if I go to the terminal and enter emulationstation but it doesn't seem to find any retropie shortcut to add the the favorites. You are doing this at approximately 13:46 in your video
So from what I recall whenever I ran custom apps and also retro pie you need to move the app image and or script to desktop just create shortcut for command, but if it's app image then set the location to the /opt folder in linux
This could be something good for laptop users. You can install Linux on a flash drive ( should be USB 3.0 or above). You can than install Retropie on that Linux OS like you normally would. I just did that with my new Samsung 256GB Fit Plus. Samsung claim up to 300MBS. That should be fast enough to run Linux and Retropie. I installed Linux Mint to it from my Linux Mint Live drive. Now I have a full install of Linux Mint and Retropie on a drive that is the size of my thumb nail. I am installing ROMS now. Its Chugging along at 61.8 MBS from a slow Monster SSD to the Samsung flash drive. It is snappier than the Monster SSD that I originally had the OS and Retropie on. It seems like a fast HDD on the Samsung Fit Plus. I got it from Newegg. I am using it on my Asus K55A laptop with a I7-3630QM 3rd gen I7, 8 GB RAM running at 1333MHz, and Intel graphics on CPU. It just finished ROMs.Retropie works as it should with a carbon copy of ROMs and save states. It works well. ROMs took about a hour to copy 96 GB of stuff. With the drive plugged in and just booting it will boot straight to Windows 10. If I hold escape I can use a Menu to boot to Linux Mint on the Samsung Fit 256GB flash drive. More like SSD by feel.
I've been trying to find this answer all day. I put retro pie on Ubuntu. Can it run a fully loaded retropie image from arcadepunks? Quarantine has me doing lots of projects.

Emulationstation is not launching after doing everything 😞 It blinks a black screen or the screen just goes black and then goes back to the Ubuntu GUI after a few seconds... I know this is an old video but I was hopping to get some luck with this little project I'm trying to do... I tried to do this with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS... I don't know if the 64bit version got installed and that's why it is doing this to me... But it should just launch no matter if my system is 64bit or not... Right? 😅 I'm so clumsy with this 😅😅😅

That RETROPIE Ui is identical with recalbox...nostalgic...installed it 3 years ago with the as I followed your videos about it..
This is what I did with my Dreamcade Replay. Much happier with it that way.

When you transfer game Roms did you simply drop them on a usb and put them in the Roms folder on retro?
@@kevinj9315, Pretty much, they still have to go in their respective systems folder inside the roms folder.

Show the steps for adding 32 bit binary to install ps2. Any chance Wii U as well?
No Retropie 32bit, as the man says Launchbox, or plenty of Front-Ends with RetroArch for PC or run a Virtual Machine inside the Windows

I've been trying to find this answer all day. I put retro pie on Ubuntu. Can it run a fully loaded retropie image from arcadepunks? Quarantine has me doing lots of projects.
Great.. NOW How about a idea as to where I find games at. oh and do I need to load software for the different controllers such as X box controller and or old type Atari type controller? Hoping for a answer soon as I have a couple old win xp computers I can play with.
Emulationstation is not launching after doing everything 😞
It blinks a black screen or the screen just goes black and then goes back to the Ubuntu GUI after a few seconds... I know this is an old video but I was hopping to get some luck with this little project I'm trying to do...
I tried to do this with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS... I don't know if the 64bit version got installed and that's why it is doing this to me... But it should just launch no matter if my system is 64bit or not... Right? 😅
