Word of advise people. Don't select "All experimental packages" to install. I wanted to see what would happen and 24 hours later it's still getting everything. Stick to the 1 hour set up in this video. You'll be glad you did.
Jesus man what internet tho
Learned the hard way as well.
As I'm now finding out 🤣 didn't think it would take this long been installing packages since 2.30 pm still going at 21.10
THANK YOU. This totally smashed it. I followed the video virtually to the letter. I installed Linux Mint on a little laptop (1.2Ghz, 4GB ram, no GPU ram, 32GB SSD),
and then followed the guide to install retro pie. I had an old USB gamepad knocking about,
plugged it in and it all worked! It has six buttons and two triggers so was ideal for NES, and Megadrive.
you are the MAN, ETA PRIME! been loving these kind of videos you're doing lately
I agree. He is great at it. Makes it easy for everyone to understand.
Does this man have 4 emulation stations in every room of his house?
You are the only person I’ve been using to set up my retro stations thank you so much it’s a fun project to do since I’m just stuck at home all lonely.
my sister almost scrap a PC, now i just finish following your steps. soon we are a happy family. tq man
man...this video saved my life! i've been at it for literally a week trying to figure out ways to install retropie to my pc and this is the only thing that worked. thanks so much brotha . video was very clear and straight to the point.
Nice Video exact what I was searching for. Awesome work man👍

I have two laptops I'm gonna do this to. I can't get enough of your videos!
Ya know.. your awesome videos are not helping me with my computer binging. 🤣 Great work man.. big fan!! 👍👍

@@ETAPRIME can you plz tell where did you got the bios from. My rpie is not reading my super mario 64 and lengend of zelda 64
I find the way this guy explains thing relaxing.
Thanks for dowloading this, it is very informative. I'm taking a computer that was in my bedroom and converting it over like this. Thanks again and I did subscribe and like this video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for this video
I used it now and its amazing how my old laptop turns in to a nice ubuntu retropie game fast game laptop
Thanks and keep it going
2019! LOL amazing! I have been wanting a ras pi4 todo retro pie I have 2 old laptops that I just did this on!!! I think ima take the one laptop apart and build a nice wood case for it, remove the screen and plug it into my tv!
Great video! Thank you for the clearest explanation
That RETROPIE Ui is identical with recalbox...nostalgic...installed it 3 years ago with the as I followed your videos about it..
Thanks ETA, just planning to used old laptop for these
You forgot to leave a link to the retro all-in-one OS
Thanks again ETA for another great video !
Thank you so much for this well put together guide! Worked perfectly.
Thanks for this video. This was A LOT of help!
thank you soo much. I really like the way you explain friend. My inglish is not too good,, but you make it so easy to understand. thanks to your video , naw i have my home made arcade mashine working and looking soo nice in my room. Thanks lots Biglike!
Thanks I got it working today on EeeBox PC EB1033 I got from ebay other day I have Debian installed
This is what I did with my Dreamcade Replay. Much happier with it that way.
Does it run games better than the Pi 3 B+?
I was thinking of doing the same thing with my dreamcade how does n64 run on it? Does gamecube games work?
@@mcb1695 Sure does.
@@bernardoreyes5661 N64 works fine, although there are issues with some cores on getting the audio output to the correct devise, pulseaudio issues, haven't tried and GC games.
Mom's laptop... If your screwing around with that you may deserve the butt woopin that comes with messing it up!! Lol. Great vid ETA, love your channel!
ETA is scared of getting calls from parents. Lol
retropie is my favorite gui for retro gaming. I now have a project for the weekend. thanks ETA Prime!
I really can't thank you enough for this video. I have done this on 4 desktops (Dell OptiPlex 790's and 990's) I got cheap, and 2 Dell Latitude laptops. I have also done this for several friends (at no charge) since I'm having a blast doing it. Now we are all trying to set up the only multiplayer in retroarch!
When you transfer game Roms did you simply drop them on a usb and put them in the Roms folder on retro?
@@kevinj9315, Pretty much, they still have to go in their respective systems folder inside the roms folder.
I installed Ubuntu 19.04 it works great
this is great! now i just have to build a new pc from scrap old pcs for this purpose
Thanks for this, it will help me out with my PC installation process alot.🤘
Batocera or recalbox dual boot Windows in the same hard drive Will be awesome. Great videos ETA, Thks!!
Thanks for this video, I got this running on an old laptop Intel Core 2 Duo 4gb memory with a 350gb, and it is working good, I needed this so when I go out I can take my games with me..
Really helpful for newbie like me, thanks a lot.
Great video.. Much appreciated!! Going to try this on an old HP Netbook.. not looking for blazing speeds, just something for the kids 👍👍👍
Thanks for the walk through, I need to find games and test it out now.
tip: if you have a really old PC that can't boot from a USB, get a CD (or a floppy if you still have one) and then burn plop boot manager to it, if that still doesn't work, go into setup>boot manager>toggle force usb 1.1 to mode 1.
This is really cool. I was looking for how to install retropie on pc long time ago but i don't need it anymore because I bought premium Launchbox. This is still good stuff though if you don't have bigbox.
Between the knowledge of you, Arcade Jason, Lord Voultar and Chubzdoomer... It's scary to think what can be done with this combined knowledge...
ETA you sound so damn clear on all your vids it sonds like you are recording audio after the video but its clear you are just using a external / headset mic - i'm curious what microphone are you using in your videos.. sounds great all the time!
What a great informative video. Thanks a lot!!
I really needed this. Wonderful. Thank you sir ;)
I am on this project today :-) yay
very very detailed explanation. Well done.
I've been waiting for you to do a video on this, jus got me an optiplex 7010 with 8 gigs of ram for 45$
Excellent content! I love the channel
Nice video man, thanks a lot. I use RetroArch myself but very interesting
Look like another late Saturday night in my future! Sweet!
Thanks from Germany. I must update from Raspberry.
Thanks for the videos!!! Love it! You r the best
Thank you. I appreciate your videos!
Wow every time I see one of your videos I've got a new project keep up the good work I love how informative you are. One question: can you run your ROMs from USB like on the Raspberry Pi???
Yes, Just like the Pi you need to Set the Usb
@@MrJaz8088 thanks. I thought so
I am from india
Love ur videos
Thanks for the clear instructions.
Thid is Formidable sir 👌🏻🔥
nice video..you are the best...greetings from GREECE..
As always thanks! Could you do a "How to" for loading the directories from another drive? I'm using an SSD that doesn't have enough space but don't want to install use my HDD as the boot drive.
Thanks for the video. I was kinda struggeling because I tried the retropie image for the hardware itself on a USB stick to install it on a stick until I realized that it is stupid.
You are amazing
Agradeço muito, abraço do Brasil
A bonus video for us. Where is part three to the $350 budget build? Jk.
you always seem to be reading my mind with videos... I was just thinking to myself a day or so ago about retro pie on Ubuntu, because I have a new install of Lubuntu on one of those HP Elitedesk desktops in my living room with my main raspberry pie with retro-pie sitting next to it and it got me thinking. Thanks for another great video. Something you may find interesting is I have installed Ubuntu studio to an external hard drive as if it was an internal drive and it boots from it just like a live boot USB stick but its a full install like the hard drive was internal. I have yet to test it with a USB stick because I don't have any spare sandisk sticks. I was also successful with installing Prime Os android to a USB stick as a full installation as if it was an internal drive. it runs slow because the stick is slow but it works. Both installs required no special setup just select the external drive for installation. So in theory you could run the Ubuntu retro-pie from and external drive so you don't have to mess with an existing setup.
I would like to see a video where you work on a netbook with a intel atom N450 processor software set up and emulation
Best video ever
That's a very good option because my old pc can't boot with batocera and i didn't try whit ubuntu, thank a lot!
If i can't boot Batocera then not much chance booting to Unbuntu from USB, I think you'll find you need to change in BIOS UEFI to Legacy or ACHI or Vise Versa to show the USB as Bootable, No reason a PC or Laptop not to Boot is set right
Today i've install ubuntu so i'm going to install and configure recallbox. I don't know what was the issue with batocera
Very nice video, could you possibly do a further video on how to add video snaps and install themes too! I would be very very grateful for it 👍
Fantastic tutorial, thanks.
Great video, but it would be more interesting to install Kubuntu (KDE Interface) or Xubuntu (XFCE Interface) or even Lubuntu (LXDE/LXQT)
Are lighter than standard Ubuntu with Gnome...
Hi Mr ETA Prime, I must say your videos have really opened up scope for me and helped in many ways. Thanks for your no fluff, no BS presentations. I currently have a really good 128gig Retropie image for my Pie. I tried to convert it to work on a PC but had limited success. I installed retropie onto my PC and then dragged over the rom folders from my other image. Some miss shaders, some dont work and others work fine. I was wondering if one day you might do a video about converting an image file from Retropie to working on a PC.
Thanks Mr Prime ;)
Did you ever find a way to do this? I'm having the same issue
Awesome video thanks!
Nice Work Man... So Retropie or Retroarch ? Which is better ?
For anyone wanting to know which gpu you are using use this command
glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer"
Sweet going have a go at that cheers buddy😀
Emulationstation is not launching after doing everything 😞
It blinks a black screen or the screen just goes black and then goes back to the Ubuntu GUI after a few seconds... I know this is an old video but I was hopping to get some luck with this little project I'm trying to do...
I tried to do this with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS... I don't know if the 64bit version got installed and that's why it is doing this to me... But it should just launch no matter if my system is 64bit or not... Right? 😅
I'm so clumsy with this 😅😅😅
i have the same issue
This could be something good for laptop users. You can install Linux on a flash drive ( should be USB 3.0 or above). You can than install Retropie on that Linux OS like you normally would. I just did that with my new Samsung 256GB Fit Plus. Samsung claim up to 300MBS. That should be fast enough to run Linux and Retropie. I installed Linux Mint to it from my Linux Mint Live drive. Now I have a full install of Linux Mint and Retropie on a drive that is the size of my thumb nail. I am installing ROMS now. Its Chugging along at 61.8 MBS from a slow Monster SSD to the Samsung flash drive. It is snappier than the Monster SSD that I originally had the OS and Retropie on. It seems like a fast HDD on the Samsung Fit Plus. I got it from Newegg. I am using it on my Asus K55A laptop with a I7-3630QM 3rd gen I7, 8 GB RAM running at 1333MHz, and Intel graphics on CPU. It just finished ROMs.Retropie works as it should with a carbon copy of ROMs and save states. It works well. ROMs took about a hour to copy 96 GB of stuff. With the drive plugged in and just booting it will boot straight to Windows 10. If I hold escape I can use a Menu to boot to Linux Mint on the Samsung Fit 256GB flash drive. More like SSD by feel.
Is it possible to do this but with a premade Retropie image like the ones from ArcadePunks? If so,how would I go about doing it?
That's a great question! I'm very interested!
I was also wondering about this and then I found this
th-cam.com/video/_YPAXvS-NW4/w-d-xo.html
Download Batocera
@@gaurinarula403 this s what I Was looking for bud. Much thanx
Use either Rufus or balena etcher
I'll give this video a Thumbelina. I have Ubuntu installed on an old Mac Mini. Retropie would be a good fit for it.
Is it possible to simply write an existing pie build onto the HDD/SSD and boot from it like you can with batocera?
Awesome Video!! Thanks for the walkthrough, I have not set it up yet but I will be turning my current PC into a monstrous emulation machine as soon as my new PC parts arrive so that I can build my nice, new Ryzen 7 based machine. I guess having an i7-4790k with a GTX970 will be overkill for an emulation machine; but I honestly can't think of anything else to do with it.. so what the hell, why not have some fun and install retropie!! At least I know that it will be future proof in regards to emulation.. for now at least.
One question I did have though, regards the storage used by Linux/Retropie. If I decide to install more than one SSD/HDD into the Linux computer that retropie x86 will be running on, is there a way I can choose where roms go? Say for instance I want to put CD/DVD based roms for ps2 onto an HDD because storage space but want the speed of the SSD for actual operation system function and quick small roms like for NES, is this possible? Basically.. 1 SATA SSD, 1 SATA HDD; roms on both drives?
Great guide thanks. Any tips on adding Daphne to this setup?
If you have a hidden network Ubuntu will not let you use your wifi. You may want to ipdate your video. You also can just write the Retropi image tp a hard drive instead of an sd card and then put it in the PC.
Can you make it so every single time you turn it on it acts like a pi in the sense of going straight to the image? Thanks
Can you show how to set up Naomi to retropie?
could you make a video but installing retropie from an arcade punks image, for example? thx!
Just download a image from the site and do the burn image step from this video you should be good to go.
@@mikewhitfield7000 if pre existing builds give you trouble, just drag and drop the ROMs from your image during the step where he says to insert your SD card.
I'm hoping images will work as I have a brand new 256gb image that I love
I'm trying to figure out what the best setup would be for my laptop. It's an hour pavilion dv7 and pretty nice. I want to set up for gaming and media but unsure what is the best option. Should I install batocera on a USB boot up? Or retropi the way this video shows, or......? Thanks for the help. I'm trying to learn all of this. Your videos have been amazing
Thank you. can u make a video using retropie on Linux mint 19 please.
Linux Mint is Ubuntu based. So it's the same 😊
Thanks so much, this method worked well and as you install ubuntu first, you can do the basics like set the screen resolution to match your monitor or laptop screen. The only problem I have (which I don't think you mention) is that retropie keeps asking me for my password. Even closing down the retropie system is a sudo command and requests your password. Want to check your network settings or IP address? You need to type in your password. etc. etc. I don't know if there is a way of solving this? Actually a second problem is that there is no config folder, just a roms folder. You have the same problem as you can see when you copy your games to the rom folder. Manually creating a config folder in that retropie directory does not work. Retropie does not pick up any config files you put in a manually created folder.
Hey Mr ETA-Prime after reading lots of Comment here, People are Confused What a Front-End, Emulator, and OS is
RetroPie: is the OS which is debian (linux) based (Linux) not windows
EmulationStation: is the Front-End that Organise the Games, Media, Emulators and more (Windows & Linux)
RetroArch: is Software and a Bunch of Emulators made to run under this Software (Windows & Linux)
Emulators: is Software that works like the System Hardware that runs your games/roms
Any Chance ETA-Prime you could do a Short Video on this ?
May I know what are the capabilities of the computer that you worked on. Explanation
Show the steps for adding 32 bit binary to install ps2. Any chance Wii U as well?
No Retropie 32bit, as the man says Launchbox, or plenty of Front-Ends with RetroArch for PC or run a Virtual Machine inside the Windows
@@MrJaz8088 th-cam.com/video/AqPwpDE7HoE/w-d-xo.html
I found this afterwards and going to try at home today. Then modify the es systems.cfg to point to the ps2 emulator for retropie. Also Wii U runs on linux, he had it on his retropie video a year ago. I found a video of wiiu running through wine but trying to find a native install.
Hey I've had success using etcher to burn Recalbox to an internal HDD to do something similar and would be a good video to do along these same lines for someone who would like something like this but also have a built-in Kodi. It turned an old laptop into a great portable entertainment machine.
