How do Hammond organ drawbars work (on the C3 used in bands like Deep Purple)?

  • / @nickfoleyuk This time we explore the Hammond Organ Drawbars and what they do.
About time you may think but this week we ask ourselves what are Drawbars and how do they affect the sound of a Hammond Organ?
In this video we go through the basics of building and enhancing a note by using a whole host of mechanics and machinery and probably answer the question “why is it do difficult to emulate a Hammond Organ on a synth or soft synth”.
Drawbars totally confuse the rest of the band, they kind of don’t make sense. I mean how can a note have an accompanying drawbar that produces a different not yet you identify with it as the first note? What!?
What I would like to know as your is what are your favourite drawbar settings and why? Do you like it bright and zingy or dark and dirty, let us know what you prefer and why! All types of Hammond sound have their place but I tend to favour the slightly darker sound when playing in my band and only brighten it up if I am taking the place of a brass section for example, or usually when I am doing session recordings - sessions really want the Organ to be bright and stand out more than in the groove in an stabled 5-piece band.
there is also a little extra information on drawbars and how they work from the Hammondzone.com website . Its a good site that is/was run by my friend Darren from his shop “Music World” out in Northampton. I am not sure if its maintained any more but Darren was a great source of information when it came to Hammond Organs and latterly the KeyB Hammond Organ clones. I think it was at his shop I first met Malc from Hammond UK, many moons ago!
Much more details on the www.hammondforhire.com blog!
    Thanks

This is the best video so far that I’ve seen that explains the drawbars. Thank you so much!

If memory serves, the third drawbar is actually the note itself. The first draw bar is an octave below. The second draw bar is a fifth above the third drawbar (the actual note itself). The fourth draw bar is an octave above the third drawbar. I can’t remember the others off the top my head. I do know the last one is two octaves above the third drawbar and three octaves above the first drawbar

How do you do to get that crunch? Is it coming from the Leslie? Great playing and explanations!

Thank you. One strange question: what kind of recorder sequencer have you on top there a Zoom?

Love it mate. Don Airey uses one in Deep Purple to great effect.

I believe the second draw bar is an octave and a fifth higher, and the third drop bar is only an octave higher.

I’ve seen a couple videos pointing out the key contact of B3 & XK-5, how when lightly pressed you can hear the tone wheels come in.
How important is this (really)? I’m considering an older model that doesn’t have that feature & also only has 1 set of drawbars per keyboard.
    Thanks

Its difficult to tell. There is no doubt that this is the way the older models worked and at some level it has to be part of the organic tone. That said there's a lot in the head here too I think. Considering the keybed is so different (and so good) its hard to tell what is doing what. What I will say is that I had an XK3-c for years and the contacts system did not play a part in moving to the XK-5.
If you are looking at one set of drawbars then you are thinking XB-2 or XK1 on something similar? I've played them both. the XB2 keybed will make an man out of you, took me a while to get to play that properly, its no synth action. I think any move up the chain of Hammond is to your advantage, the XK-5 is not cheap after all!
Investing in the drive and modulation will be far more significant to your tone than the contacts system I think. My advice is a Lounsberry Organ Driver for that lovely growl and either a Leslie speaker or if you cant afford one or your back is too weak then the NEO Ventilators are perfectly serviceable too and used by professionals around the globe.
