- Tutorial explaining how the mysterious drawbars work on the HAMMOND ORGAN B3 and many other models, keyboards and clonewheels like the Nord Electro, C2D, Hammond SK and organs from Viscount and Crumar.
I'll then share some of the most common drawbar settings and registrations that all keyboard players need to know, Jimmy Smith, Full Drawbars, Gospel and more.
We'll use the YAMAHA YC61 and GG AUDIO BLUE3 VST software organ for this demo.

Excellent explanation of what I would agree is the first additive synth. Only thing about the drawbars that I can think of which may go into your next drawbar video is the top drawbars foldback on the Hammond. I've noticed that most (probably all) VST emulations usually play this correctly, even the Reface YC does the foldback properly. For example, if you start at the left of the keyboard and only pull out the 1' highest drawbar, then as you play up the scale, eventually the sound would go out of the range of hearing. To avoid this, at a point, the highest octave will repeat eventually. The top two or three highest drawbars do this until you get to the lowest drawbar that doesn't require the foldback of notes. It's a big reason why the Hammond B3 sounds fuller than less expensive Hammonds. My L-100 doesn't fold back, so the 1' drawbar doesn't play the top octave. She still sounds great and the bottom four drawbars play across all the keys so you can still get a lot of the classic sounds from a lot of songs.

@@PhotoTrekr No (thank God it wasn't used). Also, it was an M3 (underrated) used on the original version. It's extremely easy to tell when one is used (that snarky, theater organ sound-depending on what's chosen at the console).

Footages are related to the single LOWEST pipe in a rank. We could talk pipe organs all day. I am still working for a pipeorgan co. here in the states, going on 32 years now ((O: Thanks for your continued informative video presentations.
But PLEASE don't call a Hammond organ made today a CLONE. It has the Hammond logo on it. And, according to the president of Hammond USA, the current organs are a progression of the vintage 'electro mechanical' instruments. No one makes the current B3 - C3 with all those familiar switches, controls AND real wood cabinets, BUT Hammond/Suzuki. The new Leslies as well are NOT clones of the vintage 4 motor models, they ARE Leslies using the latest technology in motor controls and amp / preamp components. (off my rant now lol)
i know nothing about pipe organs so appreciate you chiming in, thanks! interesting to note that old analogue synths, and some newer ones, have footages marked on the oscillators too! I normally refer to Hammond emulations by the other brands as clonewheels. I'm not sure how to refer to the hammond digital emulations Vintage tonewheel organ purists would probably refer to the digital Hammonds as clones, or clonewheels.... Interesting debate...
@@WoodyPianoShack Thanks for your reply Woody. I liken it to many items we buy to replace or upgrade that is a new and improved model of an original design. Cars for instance. When the VW Beetle was brought back, we did not call that a clone, same for the retro Mustang, Camaro or Challenger. They have the same name, similar look to the originals, but much advanced over the vintage editions. Clone car?, or NEW design with looks based on the original.
Now, if Chevy made a Mustang look alike, that would be considered a clone, but, these are just my thoughts on the topic. I simply believe that the people who brought back the Hammond organ would be offended when their instruments would be referred to as clones. (I guess I am, for them as a Hammond organ owner).

Great job, you covered some of my favourites. I learned to play on our home organ, a Hammond T100.
That's a spinet organ isn't it? But has a tonewheel though!! I think Tony Banks from Genesis used a T102.

I started having organ lessons when I was about 11 and by 15 or 16, I was playing in local clubs, often using the organs that they had such as B or C series or the L100, so I got to play a whole range of Hammonds in my teens - glory days! I never had piano lessons though so still consider myself an organist or general keyboard player rather than a pianist, although I can get by on a piano. And yes, Tony Banks used a Hammond T!

Another great video, Think the Roland D50 had a patch that I bought with an add on card call Green Onions. I owned a Hammond SK2 for about a year but missed all the other synth sounds so bye by it went. Keep up the great work!

Good video. Just to join a few more dots for anyone interested:
The length in feet shown on the drawbars refers to the length of the pipe played by the lowest note on the keyboard in an actual pipe organ.
If you halve the length of a pipe, then the note it produces will vibrate at twice the frequency. In musical terms this is the relationship between notes an octave apart.
Apart from the 8' fundamental pitch, all the other drawbars are used to model the presence / absence of harmonic tones. The strength and weakness of these harmonics gives each instrument its characteristic sound.
Fun fact: in pipe organ terminology, stops that speak at the fifth (like the 2 2/3' drawbar) and the third (the 1 3/5' drawbar) are collectively referred to as mutations. Classical organists often use mutations together with a solo 8' stop, like an oboe, to reinforce a particular harmonics and thus spice up the sound.

A few tips to add for your viewers. As an alternative to spending $2000 US dollars on a Yamaha YC61, as an alternative there are many good VST soft synth Hammond clones. These save space at home, and on stage. Also less things to carry to gigs or maintain.
It is interesting that perhaps the most authentic Hammond clone is actually software rather than Hardware. Exactly one year ago, the Hammond Organ Company in the USA, Hammond Suzuki in Japan, and software developer IK Multimedia teamed up together to create the "Hammond B-3X" soft synth available for both computers & iPad. The iPad version is roughly around $100 last I checked. They went into great detail to recreate not only tons of settings of the B3 and Leslie, but also many effects pedals and processing that was typically used in famous recordings. Especially rockers used the pedals for amazing tones like the Jon Lord Deep Purple sound. The present keyboardist for the rock band Kansas just put up a great demo on TH-cam recently. I would expect a lot of the classic rock bands to be using the B-3X over a hardware Hammond clone.
Here in the USA the M-Audio Axiom 61 made a great MIDI controller for B3 & synth sounds. It features 9 sliders that can be assigned as drawbars, it features waterfall keys, and even aftertouch which is very useful on many soft synths or module synths. Pre-COVID they could easily be found for about $100 all over the USA on Craigslist.
A couple more tips as a rock keyboardist myself. Try adjusting the "Overdrive" setting to get more of a "rock" sound and less of a "church" sound. No matter what the drawbar settings, it will always sound like a church organ without a touch of overdrive, and sometimes other effects and setting changes.
Also also, avoid playing on heavy weighted piano action keyboards at all costs.
Not as flexible as software, but still fairly capable I recommend for your MODX the "Organimation" collection includes some very good B3 sounds, and the novel concept of turning the SuperKnob turns each of the drawbars in sequence up or down. An expression pedal can also be used to speed the Leslie up or down.
great points and advice, agree on all! the blue3 that I am using in this demo sounds fantastic and is also $100, then we have VB3 which is the same, and this is the exact engine used in the Crumar Mojo, which is a very highly regarded clonewheel organ. So many great options these days!

I own a Viscount Legend and I love it. But lately I am using live the wonderful IK Multimedia B3X. Leslie simulation is superb.

@@WoodyPianoShack My humble opinion. Everything perfect. Leslie simulation is the only weak point.
To play it live I tried two setups.
Using IK Leslie inside a windows notebook with Legend tonewheels.
Or using Legend as a pure midi controller (mapping drawbars and all switches as Midi CC) driving IK B3X simulation.
Both work perfectly with some minutes of programming. I use Cantabile as audio engine and VST host. Wonderful software.
A friend who is a serious jazz player suggested to me Ventilator II. A magic pedal from Neo Instruments.
I will try to test it, but it is expensive, 400 bucks...

Thanks. Great overview on basic drawbar settings. I have a keyboard workstation with great organ presets but always found drawbars a bit of a mystery. A lot of info out there goes into way too much detail and gets overwhelming and confusing.

Those drawbars with fractions are called mutation stops on pipe organs, where they are never used by themselves but rather added in order to 'brighten' standard stops.
The reason the draw-bars work like that is due to the fact they are actually the stops (which are *pulled* open) of a Hammond.
Yep - takes analogy further of pulling physical stops on church organ, which I started playing at 10yo ;-)
One thing to keep in mind with Hammond organs specifically is that the keybed is not velocity sensitive. What you have is a 9 key contact setup. If you have all stops out and you press lightly, you're only producing the sound of the 1' drawbar. The deeper the key goes, more pulled drawbars are activated until you get all 9 stops with the key fully down. When you see hammond players playing in this percussive fashion, it's not for show. They also have no sustain pedal. Once you take your fingers off the keys, sound stops. Some Hammond emulations do implement sustain pedal (IK's B3X, Native's B4, Vintage Organs, Arturia B3 V) while others don't (VL122, GSi VB3). There's also the manner of velocity vs contacts. AFAIK only VB3 and maybe B3-X emulate that properly going from MIDI Velocity, along with Hammond's own XK series keyboards.

@@WoodyPianoShack One of the coolest things Hammod teachs you is the finger crawling, so you can move between chords with almost no pauses, and how to make use of inversions and different chord voicings, since you can't "cheat" and keep the sustain pedal down while you move your hands.

just a pointer, the 5th harmonic (7th drawbar) is actually a bit flatter than the 2 oct + major 3rd note (by 14 cents).

So it is a major third in natural temperament rather than in equal temperament! Makes sense why it sounds so great by itself. But then it clashes with a major thirds and the minor thirds as well...

Really interesting - I learned to play on a huge old Yamaha Electone organ which we in the 70s thought would be the future of keyboard-based music 🤣! Wish I had rather mastered the Hammond B3 & appropriate playing style, because that has indeed endured! Thanks Woody.

To make it sound like a piano 16 foot drawbar, Normal, slow, 2nd.

Awesome observations and playing around! I'm already taking notes. Once you explore and play around, you truly see what is so great about this. It's more than just haunting sound effects, and "vox humanas." I forget when John Lord started using a Marshall amp. I love innovation, and proved that an out of the box idea (like using a Marshall amp), made it sound awesome. No "old time theater" sounds. Of course, his earliest works proudly use the Leslie (turn off). It's awesome how it can sound like any instrument, including a piano. A number of these are easy to set.
I like them draw things. Im gonna get a piano now.
Maybe get a Hammond organ clone - pianos don't tend to have them!

It's 888 000 000 + 430 300 000, v1 +v2 +ch, fast + soft percussion. I have this setting on my sk1 and it sounds pretty accurate.

Also...on YT, there are videos posted by someone (over 10 years ago), of VARIOUS SOUNDS that can be made on any one of these. The sources are ORIGINAL BOOKS from the 1930s and 40s. No Leslie needed or required. Sounds range from bells to Hawaiian guitar (a favorite, sounds like a real one, and a video posted of that on YT). Explore and break out of the "fine arts/WurliTzer" box.
i heard the other day someone making the hammond organ "talk" by manipulating the drawbars to sound like vowels of human speech, amazing!

Enough with the singing shit! We get it! Enrico Caruso has been dead since 1920. It's not when the console/cabinet were built, it's the sounds they make.
Again, exploration changes one's mind about any thing in the world. All these "keyboard players" need to realize that. Not every song's a sonatta or an aria.

The korg opsix has some dedicated waveforms called „additive“ and even an Leslie effect. the synth itself is a FM synth.
But said waveforms always contain the fundamental as mentioned in the manual.
Your video says the other (those not 8) don’t contain the fundamental.
If the synth does it wrong, what workaround is there?
Or are there virtually no settings in use that set drawbar 8 to zero? Then it wouldn’t matter.
You should be able to turn the level of the "eight foot operator" down or if you want to not use it at all, you can change the ratio of that operator to a setting that you want to use in your sound.
I haven't looked too closely at the "additive" presets, though. If push comes to shove you can make a user patch that's just six sine wave operators routed to the output with the desired ratios.
So... at what setting was the Korg M1 organ sampled?

very nice video! As a Long time organ player (and now converted to software only...my back gave out years ago moving around 500 pounds to gigs), this is a GREAT job going through these! Gotta say that the IK Multimedia emulation is the closest thing emulating thus far, and when I put it through my Leslie 3300...wow. The hammond hardware is great too, but, it's all about the leslie, tbh.

I have yet to hear an accurate emulation of my favorite M3 tones. To my ear all of them are missing the ‘dirt’ and ‘sting’ in the interactions of the upper overtones. They never quite leave the ‘sine-wavy smooth” overtones, for the sorts of tones you hear in Boston’s Foreplay. Check out the "Tom Scholz on his Hammond B3" video, just past the 3:00 mark.
UPDATE: OK, I just checked out the Brian Charette - Hammond B-3X Demonstration (NAMM 2020) and at the 5:23 point, I realized I may have to update my thinking...

So the 808 000 000 register setting for playing bass lines is probably the idea behind the Roland 808 sub bass sound. 🤔
Yes, I would say you’re correct. Though you may want to bring the 2nd bar out a bit to give it a bit more harmonic bite.
838 000 000 comes to mind.
What if it's the first three out (888 000 000)? If ever I get one or near one, I would like to try that.
Good beginner's guide to drawbars but it's a pity you had the chorus ON for most of the time and didn't really show the effect - you actually turned it OFF instead of ON at 16:47 eheh. I think the use of scanner vibrato/chorus is one of the hardest things to master on the Hammond so I wouldn't even mention it on a quick guide. On the whole, I think you covered the most popular settings and that's a good starting point.
yeah, well spotted, got out of sync and the graphics were not so obvious for me what was on or off, but the C2 was kinda subtle and not really affecting the point of this presentation. thx for watching!

I love the squabbling sound - tried for ages to get it on nearly every keyboard I had through the 80s and 90s but couldn't get close until I got my first Hammond clone (the great Korg CX3). Tony Monaco has put out a great technique video on this:

I always loved the particular timbre of this registration, ever since hearing the Nice's "Little Arabella" - there's a great, semi-squabbled solo starting around the two minute mark:

It drives me crazy that on the Nord Electro 6D, they removed the feature where the 1" drawbar is disabled if the percussion is on. I'm not sure why they did this considering the feature was there with all Electros through version 5. And to your point, Hammond players use that feature as a quick "patch" change. Even my Roland RD800. a digital piano, has included this feature with its B3 model. Nord said they were going to create an update but never did.
that's crazy that they did that, a lot of players use the percussion switch to toggle that drawbar on and off, are we sure that there is no setting for that?
@@WoodyPianoShack Yes I'm sure. There is no setting. Prior I had an Electro 3 and there was a setting under System and you can see that the setting is described in the manuals for the 4 and 5 as well. The setting is not mentioned in the 6 manual. I contacted Nord support after I discovered this when I purchased my Electro 6D 73 2 years ago. Here's the response I received from a US Nord Support team tech - "I needed to consult with my colleague in Sweden around this question. He has confirmed that this is a bug in the OS which will be addressed via future update. I am not able to say when this will happen, but it will happen." That was dated December 7, 2018. There have been 5 OS updates since and this feature has not been addressed. And if it was a bug, one would assume it would have been mentioned in the manual that it was an option. To me it sounds more like it simply was left out. You live near Stockholm, right? Maybe you can go over to Nord and get them to update this :)

I see you "pulled out all the stops" on this video ;-) I've always wondered what those pulls actually did. This was quite an eye-opener for me. :-) (When I was a young kid, my grandmother had a portable organ, and would play it for the Salvation Army. I tried figuring it out, but it made no sense to me. Now it does)
