    I think the last time a fatality happened in IndyCar was in 2015 at an oval called Pocono. What happened was a car spun out from the lead and there was so much debris that one of the drivers behind the crash hit the flying nose of the wrecked car on his head and instantly killed him. Just last year in 2020 they added a windscreen to the cars so that accidents like that one would not happen.

    IndyCar is an American sport that centers around the Indianapolis 500, which has been held since 1911. In the past, IndyCar has raced in venues around the world but today only races in North America in a combination of ovals, road courses and street circuits. Compared to NASCAR, IndyCar has more international drivers with only about half of the competitors being American. While IndyCar as a whole doesn't have as large of an American fanbase as NASCAR does, the Indianapolis 500 is the most attended single-day sporting event in the world with around 300,000 attending in 2019.
    The two most recent driver deaths have been Justin Wilson in 2015 and Dan Wheldon in 2011. IndyCar is inherently very dangerous (reaching 230+ mph on a closed circuit in an open cockpit car) but is constantly seeking to improve safety. Motorsports safety innovations which had their origins in IndyCar are SAFER barriers, a dedicated driver paramedic team that travels to every race and, yes, even rearview mirrors. 2020 saw the introduction of the aeroscreen, a device designed to protect the drivers' heads and prevent small and large objects from penetrating into the cockpit.

    Although the compartments are smaller than NASCAR, the drivers cage is built very much the same. Obviously, the big difference is the head unprotected. Justin Miller died, a few years ago, when a part from another car flew into his head.

  • @Unomite
    @Unomite 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The thing you have to remember about some of the older crashes is that while some of them don't look that brutal they happened before the invention of the SAFER barrier, which means that they're hitting a full on concrete wall at high speed. The wall doesn't absorb any of the impact, the car and the driver absorb it all.

    The cars are designed to crumple around the driver and absorb the G-Forces of the impact, leaving the drivers cage (hopefully) intact.
    There is a loop behind the drivers head to take the weight of the car of turned over, which would break their necks other wise, but they do get hit on the helmet, mostly by debris. The most common injuries, on a hard front end impact is the legs, which are tucked in just behind the front axle. And, of course they are wearing Nomex fire suits. For some really explosive action, check out NHRA drag racing crashes.

    Indy Cars came out out development around the Indianapolis 500 in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. It began running in 1911, is arguably the most important car race in the world, and is the biggest single day sporting event in the world by attendance. For the 100th running a few years ago there were estimated to be 400,000 people there. That is the track you see in this video that is kind of flat and rectangular in shape. Flies into the fence and car gets ripped to shreds. It's still the world record for highest G-force survived at 214Gs. Crash an F1 car into a tire wall at 250km/h you might get 50-60Gs. IndyCar has been around a lot longer than NASCAR. Ever hear of the Indy 500? The race,and the track are over 100 years old! F1 and Indy car do look a lot alike. But trimmed out,basically all wings flattened out with little down force on tracks like Indy and other big ovals( they don't run a NASCAR'S Daytona, or Talladega ,,,yet!) But on road courses the wings are set up for maximum down force! At the Indy race many F1 drivers come and try,some succeed, most don't! Actually the overall sanctioning body of NASCAR is older than the current IndyCar body and I think nascar is the older sport as it happened because of Prohibition

    IndyCar today is essentially a mix of NASCAR & F1, where you have cars that look like their European cousins & tracks on the schedule that NASCAR races on. Unfortunately the 2021 IndyCar schedule is absolute trash but it does feature a couple of ovals, the first being Texas Motor Speedway and the second being the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I can't say the 2021 IndyCar driver roster will be trash, however, because drivers from virtually every from of motorsport will be at one point or another, competing in 2021. 7-time NASCAR Cup Series champ Jimmie Johnson, as you might've heard before, will be doing the road courses this season. Former F1 names like Takuma Sato compete full-time in the series, while Romain Grosjean is rumored to join the 2021 grid. Australian Supercars champ Scott McLaughlin will race full-time as well, not to mention there are dirt-track racers & sports-car drivers competing in the series this season as well.
    The Indy 500, which is the series' biggest event, is looking to make up for the disaster that was the 2020 running of the race, as the entry list is looking to be stacked full of talent, and fans may be coming back to the race for the first time in two years.
    The cars themselves are safe as ever, as an "areoscreen" as it's called, offers up head protection for the drivers. The aeroscreen is essentially a mix of NASCAR's standard windshield & F1's halo. The cars are also capable of speeds upwards of 230+ miles an hour, making them essentially bullets on wheels.
    IndyCar in the UK is on the Sky Sports F1 channel for 2021 I believe, as the season begins in March or April. You'll have to watch content from the individual I'll talk about in a second, down below, to see whenever the season gets under way.
    Here are two videos about IndyCar that I highly suggest you to watch. The first one I'll recommend is made by a person by the name of David Land. Although he makes content that covers all forms of racing, he primarily talks about IndyCar, and with that being said you HAVE to subscribe to him. He's set to make a lot of racing content this year you'll not want to miss. Anyways, here are videos from both him & racing TH-camr Black Flags Matter that highlight the dangers & tragedy of IndyCar that once again, I suggest you react to:
