Yep, grew up (60’s) going to the A & W drive in. Remember loving the root beer (in a glass mug )and their shoestring onion rings and a chili dog with onions. Was THE best!
That was our biggest treat in the summer. We only went once a year but what a vacation for a kid. And I would love an A&W root beer in a big glass mug right now.
I was born in 1960 and in the late 60's early 70's drive-ins were the best. There were still quite a few around by the time I was in highschool. Carhops on rollar skates was the mark of a great drive-in. Cheers from Tennessee
LOVE Sonic! A&W was huge, when I was a kid - all my sisters worked there, and some of 'em rollerskated back and forth. One Friday or Saturday night a month (CLOSED in winter), Mom and Dad would take my brother and me to eat burgers, onion rings, and have root beer floats. AWESOME!
We used to go to A&W, Dog in Suds, or B&K rootbeer stands. Almost all are gone now. Loved getting rootbeer in a frosted mug.
A&W is apparantely better in Canada than it is in America.
Frosted Mug ! 😋
Sonic still brings food to your car
I enjoy Sonic drive-in brings the days of childhood memories back and I love it
The food is terrible, though.
Where I grew up in the fifty's, in Southern California, we would drive up to the A&W and park the car and flash our headlights, and an attendant would come out on roller skates and take our order and bring it back on roller skates on a tray...clip it to our window and we would eat in the car.....wish they still did that everywhere😁
Yep. A&W and the skates...and the mug root beer!
Grew up with an A&W RootBeer Stand behind my backyard. The "attendants" on roller skates were called car-hops. I miss the extremely heavy glass ice cold mugs of root beer that the 1st gulp would sting going down followed by a soft steamy bun around a foot-long chili dog!! {pardon me while I wipe the drool from the corners of my mouth}
I, also grew up in southern California and went to A&W,as a child. We would get service in the car. It was a good time 😂! They came to the car and it was epic ❤
Same in Connecticut. Ahhh, the good ol’ days.
@@johnanderson1245 Westport CT here!
I LOVE Swenson's. I think the entire concept came about in the early days of drive thrus, and the peak era for drive in movies too. This was the 50's version of dinner and a movie for teenagers
I live by a different location than they went to though (mine has a "big box store gathering" for lack of better description that built around it over the years.)
Hearing them say “ can I get…” I can hear my mother saying “ I don’t know, can you?” Which was my ques to say “ may I have?” Oh grammar, I miss you!!!
Ironic for the English to not use proper English lmao 🙂
Back in the day the trays would go inside the car. You had a mini sort of table. I miss Bob's Big Boy and A&W! Bob's in Burbank, CA, still has carhop service on the weekends. It has a booth inside with a plaque, designating where The Beatles sat during their 1965 tour.
The restaurant chain called Sonic brings the food out to your car. They have great chili dogs and their Banana Split is pretty good
🌸 Sonic is a drive-in restaurant. When I was a child there were a lot more drive-uns around similar to the one in the video.
They also have a drive-thru.
Traditionally, we call these "carhops" because the servers "hop" from car to car. They're not as prevalent as they used to be prior to drive-thrus, but as others have mentioned, the chain Sonic is all about the carhop experience. There are also local carhops that keep the tradition alive, especially in small towns that like the novelty of them.
In the 60's, 70's, and even into the 80's, drive-in waitresses wire roller skates, and were awesome at balancing multiple trays as they brought them to the car.
Oh, and there was often music over the outside loudspeakers....a really fun place to meet your friends after a highschool football game. And to check everybody's "cool" car out....and the boys 😉😂
Been to this drive in diner! It was a regular hangout back in my high school days. 🎉
These young fellows are called "Car Hops"they take your orders, they had young women too, but at other drive ins. Swensen's has in the past have been voted having the best burger in America.
Mount Airy, North Carolina still have these type drive-in-diners. They been around for years. I like them and go when I can.
Notice that every time the camera circles the car, there are more people inside. 😅
In my day, the servers wore roller skates but not so much today.
There was a drive-in where I grew up called OOgies. They had the best root beer served in tall frosty mugs. Great memories.
Brits should NEVER eat at an American restaurant or fast food location without an American to explain what the food is and how to eat it properly.
It's increasingly rare --- but look for a drive-in-movie during your next visit to America :)
They keep closing due to the land's increasing value
....and therefore, "better use'" for strip malls, housing, etc.
I wish they still had the waiters wear roller skates!
We use to have drive in theaters, there are still a few around. I'm 67, my mom would make 2 huge grocery bags full of pop corn, a cooler full of sodas, and other stuff, put us in our pj's with pillows and blankets. They showed 2 movies so it would get really late, why the pj's, blankets, and pillows since we kids very rarely made it through both movies.
My small town still has an original independently owned drive-in. You order by microphone but the food is brought to you. The next town over from mine also has one and the biggest town nearby has a Sonic.
I was born and raised in Ohio.
I dont like Swensons because they add sugar to their hamburger meat. They were even referred to as "sugar burgers". But they have other sandwiches which are good if you dont want the hamburger, like fried bologna or breaded chicken sandwiches.
Back in the day the waitresses and waiters wore roller skates
There used to be way more drive-ins all across the US and over the decades they have faded.....sorry to say. We had a couple back in the day. The one I remember my family going to was A&W, which is a root beer brand. You could get some really yummy food. Difference is they had a port (similar to the audio port you find in drive-in theaters) that you ordered from, and then the car hops would bring you your food. They had the window clip, and the hops used to wear these special belts that held coins and they would click out the exact change car side. There are still some drive-ins where the car hops roller skate to and from your car, which was what they used to do back in the 60's and 70's. I miss them and wish they would come back.
Just like our A&W. I remember going to ours as a kid, late 60’s.
She may not expect it, but I expect you all to throw these kids a few bucks!!
I used to go to the A&W which used to be in Brea, CA, "now gone". It was the iconic car hop restaurant similar to the movie "American Graffiti" It was owned by a Swedish family, and they had great food with even better root beer floats, but by far the best part was seeing their beautiful daughter skating to deliver the orders😍. Maybe not so oddly, that particular restaurant was in a serious decline before the family bought it and turned it around. Then the city of Brea came in and claimed eminent domain. Now there is no trace of it, it is a street entrance to a neighborhood.... progress?😖 James and Millie, if you have not seen "American Graffiti" by George Lucas you must see it, it is based on the car culture here in California and George Lucas' personal experiences living in the central valley of CA. "American Graffitti 2" is also a great, if underrated, sequel.
you need to watch the movie american Grafitti to get an idea what they were really like. also being in a 40s car would make it even more authentic feeling.
I guess its a British thing, but as an American I have never said i'd like a piece of vanilla cheesecake. I would say cheesecake plain or with strawberries or something. There are other flavors, but to say vanilla seems redundant because it's the default. Anyway, it was fun to watch!
I like that you’re checking out their channel more. They’ve been around for a couple years but haven’t gained much traction in views. And they have some good content.
Oh yeah! We have a Swenson's about 3/4 mile from our house. We love it. We have to impose sanctions on ourselves. We only permit ourselves to visit twice a month.
Sonic is very good for a huge chain, but we prefer Swenson's.
Where I grew up in California I used to go to a&w for a root beer float, cheeseburger with fries before I skipped across the street to drive in movie theater in my 69 Elco with a SUPER HOT CHICK that eventually became my wife. Taken my grandchildren to sonic quite a few times when we go to the Colorado river
Servers were known as carhops. Some even wore skates. This video elicited childhood memories. Fun times.
Drive in Food is a wonderful experience and I’d love to see more of them here in America like the old days
It's a drive-in, like a drive-in movie theater, except it's for food.
In the old days they'd come to your car on roller skates so they could move around faster. :)
In Northeast Ohio, we lost our last A&W Drive-In Diner in the early 2000’s. I’m 58 and had been going there all my life. Loved their BBQ beef sandwich, onion rings, and root beer float. Sometimes a cherry float. Boy do I miss it! Swenson’s isn’t far from me. I preferred A&W. We still have a couple of Drive-In Movie theaters though, but I will l leave that to young families and teenagers. If I am watching a movie after dark, I prefer to be home now.
Many of the first drive in restaurants had car-hops { what those waitresses were called } on roller skates wearing short flared skirts
They used to wear roller skates
Even in the 60s and 70s, similar food and drive in restaurants were popular. Now they are mostly gone.
He was running, not sprinting :)
I live within walking distance of a Swenson’s! Galley Boy and potato teasers are my go to. 😊
Sonic is a drive in diner. Still very popular. 2:22
Fried cheesecake is an acquired taste. It’s a lot.
"Hey" from the Tampa Bay area of Florida, USA ! Hope ya doing well.
Enjoy ya reaction videos.
Have fun and be safe. :)
British soft serve ice cream is actually made out of whipped oil vegetable oil
In Ohio, we have tons of places like this. We call them root beer stands. All mom and pops. Love going.
She should have gotten the dipping sauce for the cheesecake. Either chocolate or strawberry sauce. Its like a cheesecake burrito.
That’s what Sonic is except the wait staff is on roller skates like the drive in experience was in the 50s.
Back in the day the drive-in servers were usually on roller skates!
Check out American Graffiti
There are 3545 Sonic Drive-In locations in the USA!
in LA in the old days LIMOUSINES would pull into these drive-ins. They ate in the limo.
I don’t think anyplace still has servers with roller skates.
Sprinting is different; there was a time that they used roller skates.
Pretty sure this in somewhat normal here. Sonic is the only big chain, but there is a lot of them.
I have been to several drive ins. If you plan to try one better hurry they are a dying breed.
That girl is beautiful. I watch her channel for the fun stuff they do.
(OMG, these people can’t pronounce jalapeño. Good thing they aren’t in La Jolla.)
you should watch .... the brits try channel , going to a classic american diner .

Are you lot the kings and queens descendent?
No fried cheese cake for me thank you!
I live in Tulsa Oklahoma... We still got Sonic a&w Root beer etc...
