  • Length 6:08 - "On January 2nd, 2019, I found myself in a place no one ever imagines they’ll be - My health had been declining for a number of months from the side effects of a chronic illness and I was taking what I thought was likely the final ride of my life - to a hospital in critical condition.
Several years ago, I was invited to a local Peterborough, Ontario (Canada) musicians’ breakfast. A weekly gathering of 10-20-30 in a little restaurant called Momma’s.There I met some amazing musicians - one of my favourites - Don Skuce was a gentle soul. EVERYBODY knew and loved Don.
He played a lot in his younger days and owned a local guitar shop called ED’s where I’m told EVERYBODY who was anybody got their 1st guitar. Don was very encouraging.
Don and I would find a few quiet moments at these get togethers to talk intimately about our lives, and our life threatening conditions.
He said he liked chatting with me because I didn't pull any punches and I have a humorous yet realistic attitude, which he said he really needed. Don and I laughed and cried together, every Thursday morning.
It was obvious that both of us were rapidly losing weight and our dark humour begged us to ask the question, “So who is going to die first?” We’d keep laughing and I often told him, "The devil doesn't want ME and the Lord won’t take YOU." So WHAT are we going to do?
On the day I planned to drive to Ottawa to see Don in hospital, I got the news that he crossed to the other side. That was a tough day. And not long after, I found myself in hospital - EMERGENCY at 115 pounds, Malnourished.
My wife and I had said our goodbyes during the car ride that morning. I said, “Mary, it’s been really nice knowing you.” Think about it, what would you say?
Shortly after I was on my own death bed. As you can see, I made it through and several weeks later they sent me home.
It was 3 AM on the morning I was to leave the hospital, when I sat on the side of the bed and thought about Don, wondered why I was STILL here. And I kept hearing an earworm. It made me smile when I realized it wasn't any existing music.
Despite my late start, Don and always encouraged me to pursue my music, MY music so, I buzzed my nurse and asked for a piece of paper and a pen and words that fit the tune in my head poured out of me:
    "The devil doesn't want me
and the Lord won't take me!
What’s a poor soul to do?
    They keep throwing me back
    For one more time,
    To sing the Purgatory Blues!”
The entire song flowed out all in one shot.
Now home, I held on to the MUSIC I heard in my head that night along with the lyrics. With some serious meditation and excellent healthcare my condition slowly improved. Eventually I felt well enough to record some basic percussion tracks, Tambourine, Shakers, that sort of thing along with my crude mouth noises for the composition.
I then invited some of my favourite Musicians (among so many) that I could hear on this track to collaborate with me to pull The PURGATORY BLUES together.
    Bridget Foley - Vocals (call)
    Lindsay Barr - Vocals (response)
    Rob Foreman - Bass Guitar
Brandon Humphrey - Rhythm & Lead Guitar
To this day my doctor tells me he’s shocked I am still alive and I whole-heartedly attribute that to my long-held belief in the energetic healing frequencies of sound and music.
    Thanks for your time.
It's a very personal piece and my homage to my friendship with Don and to every one of you fellow travelers.
    Be Well.
    Enjoy!
