I emailed a salesman saying I was ready to buy a specific car, however, I didn’t want any dealer add-ons. No paint protection, no upholstery protection, no nitrogen in the tires, etc. He never replied back to me. He literally deleted a lead of a guaranteed sale because I didn’t want to pay for a bunch of extra junk. This is why people aren’t shedding a tear for these new car dealers that are dying now.

I had no problem buying a new car. I picked out the Model, went to a Dealer did a test drive and decided on what packages I wanted. Did it all online requesting an OTD price, I noted due to a hearing impairment I would only communicate by e-mail. Living in a large Metro Area I had 6 different Dealers to work with. I ended up with a Dealer about 40 miles from Home and got 20% off MSRP no add on charges or equipment and 0% 36 month financing as well as top dollar for a my trade. Select the options, make the order, wait for it to be built, write the check and drive it home. After I left those jobs, all car purchases were struggles to make an easy purchase of a new car. I worked at a large Chevrolet dealer back in the 90's started as a porter/cleanup guy and worked my way to shop manager in a couple years. Used to argue with the owner all the time about turning trade-ins on the lot and not sending them to auction. One week I took all the trade-ins we had and had our cleanup crew go thru them, paid the mechanics for an hour to go over the mechanicals, put them all down on the corner of the lot with shoe polished prices on the windshields. We had 11 Friday morning and by 3pm Saturday the last one was rolling out with a happy customer. Each one sold for at least $1200-1500 more than we would have gotten at auction.

I did my own Carfax & Kelly Blue Book on my car, both values are very close between $1330 to 1370! 2nd Honda dealers out the door price was $31,215, NO add on sticker & they offered $1400 for my trade & gave me a $1000 off the sticker price "so far"! The 1st dealer owns 18 different dealership of different brands, the 2nd dealership is a family owned dealer that been in the business since 1985 & only has that one dealership & a lot of the sales, office & etc. are related to each other! A car dealership sees no difference between a business deal and a scam; they will cheat a relative, a neighbor, co-worker or a stanger! The thing that gets me most, is the fact that dealers lobby state legislatures to retain and keep in-place the dealership system of selling cars! The dealership model is enshrined or protected by state laws. CQA, you have removed the mystery from buying a car 👍🏾

Somehow, buying a car is a worse and more painful experience than buying a house. Maybe it's because the pain of buying a house is spread across several weeks while buying a car is concentrated into a single day. Every time I've just walked into a car dealership I'm guaranteed a few hours of pain. My good car buying experiences have been when we have a connection or referral to a sales person or someone else at the dealership. In those cases, we've had a good experience and give repeat business to that dealership. I remember walking in to a VW dealership and it was 3 hours until I finally started to walk out and they gave me a price that was close enough to what I was looking for. I went into a Ford dealership because I was really excited about the Ford Fusion Hybrid and they kept pushing a 7 year loan when I was asking for 3, 4 and 5 year term options. I eventually gave up and went next door to a Nissan dealership we had previously bought from. Madness!

That kind of pain subsided when I started buying cars from US Government at GSA auctions. Plain Jane cars or trucks but fairly low mileage and good condition. Win the bid and it's a about a five minute task to pay with your credit card (no fees) and be on your way. When I buy cars at a GSA auction as a private buyer, I am somewhat comforted in knowing I am not more than $100 more stupid than another probably better informed buyer (often a dealer). I own 2 Teslas and you are correct there are no games when buying a Tesla, the game starts after buying it. Getting parts for a Tesla takes forever so if you ever have an accident or need parts, have fun paying for a car you cannot drive for months waiting for parts as they care more about building new cars to sell than they do about supporting the cars they have already sold. Then when they drop prices they destroy any equity you have so make sure you get a low interest rate and put a lot down so you are not underwater. That being said I still love my Model S Plaid, just sucks when it needs parts...Let the games begin!

A couple of years ago I decided to trade in my like new car for a new one. So I contacted the dealer and told him what I wanted and described my trade-in, which he professed to be anxious to see. We made a tentative deal and I made an appointment with the salesman I had been talking to. At the appointed time I showed up. At the reception desk, when I mentioned my appointment all I got was a blank stare and was told to wait. Then at last I was told that someone would be with me shortly. It turns out that the guy I was supposed to see took the day off. A salesman, not the one who made the appointment, came over and said he'd be right back. So I sit there for about 20 minutes while I see this guy wandering around the dealership. Finally I had enough, told the receptionist they just lost a sure sale and walked out. On my way back home I got a call trying to get me back. My message to them, and to all car dealers is: F-OFF. I'll drive the car I have until the wheels fall off.

In California there is a lot of inventory & dealerships continue to make a lot of money with ADD ONS. Two weeks ago I thought I had a done deal with a 2023 Nissan Rouge but with $4k of ADD ONS the deal fell apart & walked away. A week later I saw the same trim at another Nissan dealership I went to try to purchase without ADD ONS. This time it was different because I told them that I wanted no ADD ONS & I told them that I wanted the price they had on their website, Thinking that they were going to do the same thing I asked for OTD price on a 2024 Pathfinder. It was what I was looking for but because it was late at night & I wasn't ready & walked away again. So I feel that this Nissan Dealership will be the one where I purchase my next SUV because they treated me very well.

Wish there was a Dealer that just offered a fair price with no add-ons & have a website or kiosk or Live Rep which just completes the transaction based on what I want NOT them - I would buy a new car today. I know I'm dreaming. So they can keep their overpriced scam filled vehicles.

Unfortunately many Americans think that they have to buy a car that they really cannot afford. So very quickly they can go into debt that they cannot pay. My rule is that if you cannot afford to buy the car you are interested in with cash then you cannot afford that car. I think Brandon's cars are great. Most of my life I have driven used cars. Many of them I purchased from the owners for cash prices that were under $3000. Because of this frugal approach to car buying I was able to buy a brand new Ford maverick truck this year. I searched our area for the dealership that had the lowest documentation AKA doc fee. I ordered the truck from Wiscasset Ford in Wiscasset Maine. What a delightful buying experience for a new vehicle. There were no dealer markups of any kind and they help me all the way from my original order for the base hybrid maverick to expediting the order and finally taking ownership. I am so happy! So a great dealer experience with no BS or added fees is possible, you just have to put in the effort for it.

I went back the next day and spoke with the general manager And told him how I was treated, and he went in and fired him on the spot. Good video. I was in the market for a "new-to-me" car Summer 2023. What a nightmare.. This was the .. 7th car I've purchased. *Some* of what I encountered: 1) $1,000 doc fee at a Toyota dealer in Waterford, CT; 2) $600 prep fee at a Toyota dealer in Westboro, MA; 3) $2,000+ "paint protection" added after negotiating on the price of a car - Smithfield Toyota in RI; 4) Toyota dealer in Framingham, MA offering me less than 50% of Kelly Blue Book value on my trade-in (a Honda I purchased *from the same* car dealer chain!); 5) CarMax wanted above-market value for a 2020 Toyota Camry, which had a scratch going from the upper right of the hood, through the A-pillar, into the driver's side door - AND a gouge in the same door - AND a gouge in the driver's side passenger door as well. Throughout the process I kept my eye on a used 2018 Stinger GT2 in SW CT. They dropped the price an additional $1,500, and I bought it within a week. My shopping took over four months, in total..

What some of the dealerships around me have started doing is instead of posting prices on their cars they are listing cars by monthly payment. I understand that a lot of people are only interested in what their payment is going to be so that's how they're selling the car. But I don't think what the consumer understands is how the money they spend translates into their monthly payment. Because yeah you can get into a car for a certain amount of money but how long is that for? Are these payments going to be for 84 months or 96 months? If you're only looking at monthly payment and you want that payment, you might be paying on that car for 8 years.

I agree about all that. I bought a car a couple months ago. I went online and picked an inventory model equipped to my taste. Downloaded an app. Dropped $250 to hold that choice. Do your own financing or do it in the app. The app makes everything clear in regards to monies. When the app notifies you its ready, go to that location. Go inside the building and get the key. Drive away. That's how it should be. Easy. I swung $11k credits and discounts from MSRP. (and of course it was a Tesla).

And the keyword was "inventory". Tesla would rather build-to-order. But they do bleed out models they send around to Service Centers and Showrooms. And 9 or 10 days from birth is considered old stock to Tesla and they often shave a bit off the price to get it moved. Especially at end-of-quarter/year.

I just went through this mess yesterday. I worked with three dealers to try and get the best price on a particular hybrid accord. I had a dealer tell me that he could get us the out the door price we were looking for, and that, even though he didn’t have the color we wanted on the lot, he could get it for us by the time we finished our paperwork. It was complete and utter bullshit. He did not have the car on the lot, he just wanted to do a bait and switch to something that he did have available. Wasted about four hours of my wife’s time. oh, and they did try to add 3K worth of dealer add-ons above the price. They had agreed to sell the car initially.
The next day we got a call from another dealer here in San Diego that said he had the car on his lot. And he could honor the same price. My wife made him take a photo and send it to us to make sure. It turned out. He actually did have the car, and this transaction went so much smoother, but it still took about three hours to complete the transaction. Much of that was spent waiting for the finance guy. So yes, it’s a really really crappy process buying a car. And I agree, I would rather go to the dentist.

The last 2 vehicles I found happened to be on dealer sites where you could calculate your payment based on your credit and your needs. After putting in exactly what I was willing to pay down and my credit score, I found payments that I was OK with. I would screenshot those exact numbers and send an email to the dealers asking them to move forward with leasing said vehicle based on the numbers that I got from their dealer website. Every time they tried to deflect from the fact that I had already come up with a payment and tried to steer me to a car that I did not ask about and gave me numbers that were totally inflated from the numbers that I found on their actual dealer site. It's like they're so greedy that they can't see a good thing in front of them while they have all of these cars taken up space on their lot. It could have been a very simple sell. But I just decided to move on because the power of the internet allows me to do shopping in a much wider area base. It's so ridiculous. And what's even crazier and shocking to me is that the most honest straightforward Dealers I've worked with so far have been Mercedes Benz and I really didn't think that would happen LOL.
