I had a similar experience when I was buying my Mustang Cobra. I went into a dealership; test drove the vehicle. I was filling out the paperwork after the agreed price and the salesman came in a said, "I talked with my manager, and we are charging $5k over sticker as a market adjustment." I said, "I am leaving." He said, "Wait, I will see if we can get it $3k over." I said, "I wouldn't buy it from you, if you would sell it to me $5k under sticker. " I bought another one for sticker price at another dealership.

2012 I was going to buy a 2010 BMW 528i, 25K miles on the odometer, clean inside and out, still under warranty. The dealer was asking $29,500. I had doubts. I took the contract to my credit union, the underwriter offered to negotiate a better price for me, which she did. I got the car for $26K (tax & license included) 🎉. When I brought the check (from my CU) to the dealership I got the dirtiest looks from the finance mgr and GM. The sales lady was still extremely nice 👍
I wish all banks and credit unions did that for their customers. It takes the stress out of purchasing a vehicle.

I bought a 2017 Corvette with 18k miles on it from a Toyota dealer in Orange County two months ago. I had a fine experience with the salesman, it was finance managers that really pissed me off. They tried to sell me like eight different overpriced bullshit warranties and I said no to all of them. They had three different finance people try to come in and guilt me into buy the warranties I stood my ground and said no to all of them. $800 for a key warranty lmao.

Fellow 2017 C7 owner, a lot of us in the c7 group have had to replace our torque tubes. It’s a common problem these have, it’s about a $6k repair. Set some money aside in the future to plan on replacing it or get a warranty that covers it. Grats on the car!

I live in Ohio, was trying to take advantage of ford's special financing on new 2023 F150. My local area was thin and overpriced. Found a dealership in Virginia who was motivated to sell a truck. Got the rate I wanted with an OTD I was comfortable with. Had it delivered to me in 48 hours. Be willing to talk to a lot of bad salesmen and move on until you find a good one.

I live in central ohio and have bought 7 of the 20+ new cars ive gotten in my lifetime out of state.. granted none of them since 2020.. but ive always been able to neogitate numbers over Email.. (I dont like phone calls because unless they are recorded its easy for a salesperson to say "oh thats not what I meant to say"... in all cases ive told them im from out of town and I want the deal done except for me to come in and sign the papers and drive my new car home.. (Ive never had one shipped.. I have used the opportunity to have some fun and an exciting roadtrip in a brand new car).. so ive either driven my trade (did that twice).. or flown / rented a car.. one dealer in indy in 2019 actually rented me a car to drive to their dealership and pick up my car.. but I think being out of town has an advantage.. that sales-person knows you will never even have a chance at buying if he says "you must come in".. and if you are calling a dealer out of town you are serious enough about a car he has to be willing to travel and get it (or have it shipped).. these are new cars so i dont have the issue of the car not being as advertised.. its brand new. and I upfront tell them "No little shop of horror addons".. seems to always be a tiny office with a little short dude behind a large desk.. if im getting an addon i tell them during neogtiation.. I actually *DID* walk from one out of state sale... they started in with the "my manager didnt approve our previous offer".. so I got right up, ordered an Uber and left... ended up calling his competitor who gave me a better deal, (got me the same car by dealer trade).. ... car buying is an adventure

saw this dealer here in Maryland that had some great sports cars with some really great prices. went over there to find out that they sell a powertrain warranty on top of the price of the car but said warranty cannot be declined or discounted! So, a car that was priced at 22K was now 27K because you had to pay 5k extra, because they said so and they would not budge on the price. Yup, that is when I walked out and never came back in

Yesterday, within 60 seconds of walking through the door, the salesperson asks me some questions, one of which I answered "thats irrelevant. " He then turned the paper around and pushed it toward me and said , "sign at the bottom please. " It said "if numbers are correct I agree to buy today." I had not yet been shown the car I came to see, They had Not yet looked at my trade nor given me an offer on my trade. I had been in the dealership no more than 60 seconds.

Why were dealerships allowed to legally gouge people for 3 years,? I would think marking a vehicle 25 to 50% more because of the shortage should be illegal. No one is talking about this. And they cant say victomless crime because a lot of people have lost all their credit due to this. Yes, they werent forced into signing, but when ALL the dealerships are doing it, did anyone have a choice?

    • @davidbergerson
      @davidbergerson 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I think you may have ignored the definition of MSRP. You know it is suggested, not mandatory. Yes, people had choices. They were not compelled to buy at that price. Scarcity is also a real thing.
I am NOT trying to defend dealers at all. My goal here is to explain a perspective that you may have overlooked. If I am a dealer and I can make $2000 on a car, that sounds good. I look at my operating expenses of having that lot, the people, the software, the . . . I know that I need to sell 120 cars that month, making $2000 on the car to cover my expenses. Well, when I am only seeing 20 cars because of allocation issues, I have a choice. I can mark those cars up to make $12k per car to cover my expenses or lose money.
Last I checked, a car dealership is not a charity. As was mentioned in this video, profit is not a bad word. All we can do is argue on how much profit is there.

I get the sentiment but their business is to make as much money as possible from a car sale.. nothing more and nothing less.
You always had the power to say "No, maybe I can't afford it now" I'd rather wait and buy it used or I'd try a different dealer, brand, etc... Then getting into an absurd debt.

To put this on the dealers absolves the consumer from making idiotic financial decisions.
I can sell some used socks for $7K doesn’t mean someone has to buy it. If the price is too high or the interest is too high they could simply say “no” but because a lot of people want to show off a new expensive car with the instant gratification (that last few months), they make these decisions.

Pure Greed is why this exists. Plain and simple. LOL I remember one time a friend and I were with my mom trying to get her a car and we sat down with the dealer and negotiated a price, but it was way to high and my mom could not afford it, we gave them our best of what we could afford (mind you this was way back in the early 90's) and they said there is no way we could do that, so my mom who was upset at this point because we been there a few hours and they were jerking us around said no, never mind I'm going to go across the street and buy a car (she had excellent credit mind you) and as soon as we walk out the salesman came running after us, saying ok, ok we can do your price, but my mom was so angry at this point she said no I'll never buy a car from you, so we went across the street and with in like an hour and a half she was driving home in her new car and the funny part was we drove by the other lot and waved to them because the sales guy was out front.😂. I'll never forget that, she also had the car paid off in like 3 years and drove it for like 20 years.

The industry ruined itself with deception and greed. When an invoice - a legal document - is reduced to a synthetic representation of what a dealer actually pays for a car, something is wrong. Too many back channel revenue streams and bogus fees also poison the business. Given that most dealers have a service department absorption rate close to or in excess of 100% they can literally give cars away at "true cost" and make money. When a dealer says they will sell you a car at or below invoice they are admitting that there's a ton of hidden money in the transaction. All of the car buying drama is a self inflicted wound on the part of the industry. Before the Automobile Information Disclosure Act of 1958 requiring window stickers it was both worse and better buying a car. Before then you had no idea what the true cost was and only skilled buyers got the best deals. At least they robbed you with a handshake and a smile back then, Today they still rob you and don't even shake your hand.

I used to think that too, a new car is a new car. However, I bought a new Hyundai Accent in 2021. I really liked the car, and we wanted another car so we picked another 2021 Hyundai Accent 6 months later. Same trim so I didn't really take it for a long test drive. As time went on I discovered the second Accent didn't drive like the first one. It was slower, worse brakes, and didn't handle as well. There should have been no difference, but if you drove them both you would have thought they were 2 different cars. You can use competition in store buying, I have done it many times. I have also purchased 70 cars in my lifetime.

The Dealership I went to let me take the 2021 Silverado 3500 for a TEST drive. The salesman said take her home, Drive the truck, I drove it all over that day. We called the salesman from home and asked him, how long we can TEST drive this PU. He said as long as we wanted to. He was more interested in showing us his Fishing photos. He was NOT interested in if we wanted to buy the truck. We had a 2000 Ford F-250 with a gas engine for trade in. The Silverado was a Dermamax with Allison 10 speed transmission. Even if we were NOT happy with this 3500 with 8 foot bed, he would have let us walk away from the sale. I did walk away from the Ford Dealership that was trying all these tactics that the video talks about. The Dodge Dealership was the same, they tried to find me a Cummins but the one they had had the same mileage as my Ford Gas engine. There was NO pressure by the Dodge salesman to get me to buy the used PU. I am NOT happy with Ford and I have been a Ford truck guy my whole life. The 3500 Silverado looks so bad looking at the front of the truck. And she walks thru snow up to running boards. She has been in beach sand very soft and deep and drove it like no tomorrow. Just saying GMs transmission work great in snow and soft beach sand. But end of the day she is my work truck she has ( 275/70R18) tires so she looks great for a big truck. I do NOT really hear the tires.

Why can’t dealers just go back to the basic’s. Like the did years ago. And just sell close to or just above invoice on a new vehicle. Also sell a used vehicle for a 1-2 thousand over cost and pick try to make some more money on financing and warranties. Not make a ton of money on Avery way.

I will also say the Financial manager was NOT a hard core guy with added on My and wife sat with him and he did NOT push us to add on the PU. She was only interested in the 8 foot bed ( had to have)
For work truck. I have never had a financial manager as great as this guy. The Ford Financial manager when we bought a car from Ford was a A number one prick. He tried to con us into everything. Just saying watch out for the after salesperson meeting with sales manager in final pricing for ADD ons. Tell the NO on everything. See how they talk back to you. You can still WALK away, and do it, you are the buyer, you don't have to listen to this BS, you at the end of the day are paying for all this add on, do you really need any of this garbage 😊 just leave the Dealer, do you really need that vehicle today. We went into Dealership to NOT buy today, just looking at all the models. That's why I looked at Cummins and Duramax. And like I said I already bought Ford trucks my whole life. In 2024 I canNOT believe how Bad ass my Silverado looks to me and I am NOT a chey lover. These videos help so much in reality looking at different vehicle builds especially USED Diesel PUs with low mileage.

1st gen Tesla was $32,000. When used you're gonna need a $20,000 battery. $20,000 from $32,000 is $12,000. The battery in the used Tesla shouldn't be factored into the sale.
