Hi Friends, the great thing about Reid is he is very balanced! One minute he's recording an Artist Live straight to Vinyl, with no compression, or EQ:- th-cam.com/video/38KDoWlxWtg/w-d-xo.html and here he is showing us almost the opposite! He goes extremely in depth showing how he can shape a Country song to get on to Modern Country Radio! Thanks ever so much!
Love they method(s) he demos, esp regarding looping the drums through the SSL compressor twice - but not the kick. Yeah. Sweet. Amazing sounds. Thank you Warren for yet another look behind the curtain.
I’m glad we have guys like this and all of Nashville that suck every bit of life out of everything by making shit perfect and then spend copious amounts of time making it sound lofi. Thank god for Motown, muscle shoals, Norman petty, sun studios and stax .
All of my recording and mixing knowledge comes from my metal head friends and some experimentation. Now that I’m playing more twangy music, these old techniques aren’t doing the job. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and helping folks get a better mix!
Something that I'm just learning about is a technique called dynamic EQ. Do you use it very much and if so how or in what way? Could you please give some examples of this technique and approach to mixng. Thanks. 🎶🥁
Hi Brian Anthony Rask dynamic EQs are a great technique for combating issues in vocals in particular. It can really even out random EQ boosts in the vocal.
A Dynamic eq can also be used to tame mud in Bass Gtrs. This allows the warmth (positive mudd) to bloom on higher notes on the bass but it can be dipped out and controled on lower notes.
Hey, I took this course and at the end, he encouraged us to mix the tracks ourselves and then send it to him. Well of course, I did that. I like the song. Where do we send the mix?
I'm trying to get one last opinion before I buy some mics/recording equipment... What are everyone's thoughts on this setup (prospective) for a variety of styles (jazz and pop-rock to metal) - 2x Lewitt 040 match (overheads :) ) - 4x Sennheiser e604 (toms) - Audix i5 (snare) - Audix d6 (kick) - Scarlett 18i20 interface This is really about all I can afford at the moment, (I'm almost 16) and I have a budget of around $2,000 as the top end. Also, does anyone know of any good and affordable stands for overheads and snare? It is a topic that I was having quite a bit of trouble finding any conversations about online. Thanks!
Buy what you can afford, and make it work. My first setup was 3X SM57s and a B52, with a Tascam US-1200, and some dime store cables. Made it work. Setup now is different, but the core things are still there.
@@Producelikeapro It took me forever, so that now the only problem is what stands to get. When/if I go off to college and I can't bring any recording equipment, almost all of this has a pretty good resell value, so I'm about ready for anything. It took forever for me to work and get enough money, and still have any left over. Thanks as always!
@@slim1275 Yeah, before I got a job that budget stuff looked really enticing. I play a ton, I'm in around 3 bands rn (all time low), and was also interested in studio playing. I started looking at the higher end stuff because I finally had more funds, and because I would like to do more studio/commission parts because I play so many styles. Good thing most of the stuff I'm looking at has a pretty good resell value, just in case I can't use it after high school.
I'm really having trouble finding useful advise on vocal recording . Double , triple tracking , effects, eq , compression, harmonization , I HATE THE SOUND OF MY VOICE AHHHHHHHJHHHHHHH !!!!!!!
Hi! Please could we ask Reid more about layering the snare with UREI click sample? It is an amazing technique. Is this an original UREI click sound, or it is pitched, filtered, or something like this? Thank you Warren!
Absolutely loved this guy's style and I use his drum samples every day... but that hybrid setup must make recalls literally IMPOSSIBLE. Still, gotta get myself a pair of those glasses...
Working on all kinds of genres requires all kinds of skill sets! A couple of weeks ago we showed Reid recording an Artist Live straight to Vinyl, with no compression, or EQ:- th-cam.com/video/38KDoWlxWtg/w-d-xo.html and here he is showing us almost the opposite! He goes extremely in depth showing how he can shape a Country song to get on to Modern Country Radio!
I'm struggling with kick and bass. What about the Mr. King technique? Using the vu-meter and letting the kick and bass togheter hitting zero on a vu meter? Can I use it in country music or will I have kick and bass too loud at the end? Please help 😔
Can the volume of the title sequence really not be turned down a bit, though? I've got my volume set so all the rest is audible, but whenever the "jingle" comes on, it blows my head off...

NASA engineers got nothing on this guy. The drum processing alone is more complicated than landing a probe on Mars. I'm really shocked how complicated this has become.
Unfortunately it is why corporate country labels produce sanitized and uninspiring music. It's produced to be shiny and spotless and sound good on the radio. Some of Sturgil Simpson's earlier work is a good contrast to this approach. Even going back listening to some old The Highwaymen is preferable to contemporary country. I don't make the mistake of calling it shite and trite but it doesn't appeal to me.
Hi Curtis, a couple of weeks ago we showed Reid recording live to Vinyl th-cam.com/video/38KDoWlxWtg/w-d-xo.html Knowing many ways to work either with zero plugins cutting live to disc or using tape, or all digital and everything in between will give you a ton of options and really help build your career!
Hi Elsif haha I believe you may we’ll be on the wrong channel? Haha yes, Reid maybe needs to get to the gym before doing that! I know I would need to!! Haha
Hi Sjoerd ˈʃuːd haha are you joking? Presence ‘the state or fact of existing, occurring, or being present in a place or thing.’ It’s literal it’s not an EQ on a guitar amp! Haha
The drums sound like crap. Adding samples instead of getting a quality recording, and working with that, should not be the go to answer. I am a drummer. I would never insult myself, or another drummer, by adding samples to the drum part. This is not how to mix. This is how to get through half a dozen sessions in a day, and pocket a ton of money. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong - I'm putting the art above the ungodly dollar.
WeAreThey who doesn’t love the sound of a band playing live in a room with just a couple of instruments! It’s wonderful! Density of mixes changes things dramatically! I’m assuming you record live three or four bands? Is there anywhere we can hear your recordings? Always interested to hear what people are doing!
stereolaunch thanks ever so much! Yes, I understand that some people only believe in knowing one skill set and trying to apply that to every song and production! However, as you can see Reid moves form using no EQ or Compression live straight to Vinyl and then is able to mix a complex modern country mix! And of course everything in between
I really dislike the sound of the bass in this recording. Way too heavy and obnoxious. This is not "Nashville" mixing in a traditional sense at all. This is modern hybrid country/rock/pop/techno-dance music. For me "Nashville mixing" means simplicity. If you have ever spent a lot of time listening to the great country artists of the past, and learned about the studios, engineers and producers they recorded for----- you'll find that simplicity was the key. Just a few microphones, very limited effects, and the limited equipment of the day. This video is exactly the opposite.
Agreed. the problem is there is NO TIME. artists have to get in and get out. No time to take a day to figure out what drums sound good with what mics and what not. Glenn fricker would be ashamed.
He is not a keep it simple guy for sure. Thank god he is not a teacher in studio class. His mix is probably good but so complicated with tons of plugins for something that can be done way simple then that with the same result.Well like he said there are no rules i guess.

Hi Reid, curious what drum samples you are using generally on your projects?
Oh how I miss living in Nashville.
Can the volume of the title sequence really not be turned down a bit, though? I've got my volume set so all the rest is audible, but whenever the "jingle" comes on, it blows my head off...
I had to laugh when he was going through the API snare settings and said Vance Powell was pretty good.

routing/recall on this looks like a nightmare. that assistant better be getting paid well.
In summary: use a $300,000 board, $50,000 in outboard racks, and then $5,000 in plugins. Easy!
