I just went from a 2017 E Class with full screen to a 2021 GLE and couldn’t believe the downgrade to a tiny screen view, I thought I was upgrading?! Wrong… I really hope they do fix this at some point?!
Apple may hold on to new wallpapers for September release, or for RC (Release Candidate) versions of the beta builds, lets keep hoping! Otherwise I fully agree with the feature you mention, dark mode icons (at least, i could go without the tint) should be available in CarPlay as well.
I would be interested in having CarPlay take over the instrument cluster *if* I could alter the fonts, gauges displayed, and their position, etc. Just having Apple’s interface vs the manufacturer’s one just changes one esthetic for another. The one thing I would 100% want to see is to use the nav program I’m using on my iPhone integrated. I wave a BMW with the heads up display, which I absolutely love. But if I go into CarPlay and use Apple Maps or Waze, etc, I then lose the heads up, so I don’t use them anywhere as much as I would otherwise.
Ah I see all very good points! Although annoyingly I think the font choice is down to the car manufacturer. That clip is Apple selling the new gen to car manufacturers to convince them to do it. But yes I agree with you, I would like to choose myself like I can now on the Home Screen (of my phone)
As a diabetic who wears a CGM (Constant Glucose Monitor) which is integrated to my iphone via the manufacturer's app, it would be nice to be able to see this app displayed on my Apple Car Play without having to add multiple apps to talk to each other - and then, MAYBE, display readings on the Apple Car Play screen. I mostly use Apple Car Play while riding on my Goldwing motorcycle, and from a safety standpoint, it would be nice to get the CGM alerts/readings on the screen. Has anyone else mentioned this issue?

As for latest CarPlay seems, does not look that much different at all.
I have just bought my GLA 250e facelift, and i am in love with the car. To be honest, if it was up to me I would have given you shares in Mercedes. You are doing a great job. When I picked up my car I told the salesman you don't need to explain anything, Nick explained everything.
Hey Nick. Apple CarPlay is not really evolving much, which in a way is fine by me as I only really need two things: the navigation and the music. All I need while driving. I would hope there would be a bit more personalization to combine the two on a screen, with the ability to tweak the split with more/less info for each (I know there is one view with both but very limited UI). Btw, I just traded in my GLA with a 2019 C43 AMG Coupe and oh man, what a car!
@@npoleary well as much as I've been loving Apple products for a very long time, they've been pretty slow and uninspired for quite some time...And I don't see the majority of cars manufacturers leaving the control of their cars to a third party. So will wait and see when and what will this 'next-gen' CarPlay really looks like. :)
Apple’s business model is always watch what the competition does, then move in and absolutely ace their version of it. Yes they could be considered late to the party with features over the years but mostly, when they do bring something out, it’s pretty good. 😊
Apple shown the technical details for the new CarPlay. The “CarPlay” in the car with speed and everything is independent from the phone. In the video they explained the multiple layers of information that are separated but shown together. Pretty neat, highly recommended if curious.

i will add this, ford already talks with the current version of carplay, when my low fuel light comes on i get a notification to find a fuel station on my phone. i hope going forward they can integrate next gen car play with current hardware via a software update. alot of their vehicles already have the 12 inch main display for speed and revs etc.
next gen carplay looks SO much better than any car interface ive seen already, please leave tech to the tech companies plus as someone who owns an iphone, ipad, apple watch, mac, apple tv, etc, etc i want the interface in my car to match design wise with my car
im running it on my main iphone 13 and its fine for the most part. worst thing I have encountered is massive thermal throttling when connected to car play, yt PIP while scrolling through safari. dev reboot (quickly press volume up then down, then press and hold the power button until it turns off and then shows the apple logo) fixed it and was back to normal. there does seem to be some sort of ram management issue happening but its not terrible to deal with.

Thanks Nick, very interesting. Not actually that bothered about the full car play implementation allowing customization of dials, because Mercedes are already a long way there. As you know we can already change dials and information, and presumably Mercedes will continue to enhance. Personally I think it's great now. Also I find I use hey Mercedes more than siri because you can of course control car functionss safely not possible with a siri and not likely anytime soon without getting a new car. My request to apple 1. Improve the connection process to the car, it is generally reliable but can vary in speed and sometimes just not function (see in my Mercedes and also in my wife's audi). Add error message dispay if it recognizes a problem. 2 what about an apple radio, yes I know there are radio apps but integration with Siri is generally terrible or very limited. Mercedes integration with in car radio is far far superior to using siri with a radio app. 3 improve siri integration with Apple maps, Mercedes again miles superior with integration to the Mercedes sat nav

I would like to see: (1) Route optimization. By this I mean you could list errands where you need to go, and when you need to need to be there, and Maps would plan your route. It could even integrate with your calendar for the day. (2) Spatial Audio for the car. (3) Road trip planner, including restaurants, services, points of interest, and weather along the route.
It kind of does that with Apple Calendar. If you put it on a Mac or iOS calendar where you want to go, it’ll appear automatically in the car which I use all the time 👍🏼 Spatial Audio would be cool and the other bits you mentioned
I do use the Apple Calendar in CarPlay, but it’s only a single destination at a time. I was thinking more about planning a route to do all your errands for the day. For example, “I need to pick up dry cleaning, but groceries, drop off a cake at Molly’s, but pick up the kids from school at 3p.”
Ah multi destinations would be good I mean what I do is have them all in my calendar with the location 😜 then on the calendar app, they all appear there in the car
Can you not do that over Siri? I assumed you could I should note I’ve not tried it, I don’t have an automatic garage but I just assumed you could do that.
For Mercedes? Yes MBUX NTG 6 will always have a cropped screen. This is because it has two screen sizes available for purchase for one multimedia system. That’s what I’m led to believe anyway

This might simply be a quirk in IOS 18, but since running the Beta the sound in the car only comes from one speaker, then after a minute or 4, the rest of the speakers catch up. It is only through Carplay as the radio is unaffceted
Unless you’re a developer it’s best not to run iOS 18 currently. (I tried it on a spare phone and there were a few bugs as expected) On your phone though, help them out, you’ll have a new app called “Feedback”. Pop a report into them and submit it straight to Apple 👍🏼
My CarPlay has completely stopped working now. No option in the Settings on the phone. It charges when connected to my car USB as it always has. However now CarPlay is not coming up. And I didn’t back up before my last update 😑
Try deleting the pairing on the phone and the car and re-connecting back up. It is a Developer Beta software currently meaning it is just for developers. There is a high chance that’ll you encounter issues until it’s fully released later this year.

I’ll give the next gen CarPlay a miss if it’s only on the new cars with speed limiters, tracking and geo fencing so they can control your car. I’ll stick with my slightly older car with limited government control.

Really interesting video and ahead of other influencers 😊 You alluded to it but I would like to see Apple introduce a You Tube/Netflix app for Car Play linked to motion sensing of phone to enable video when car is stationary for say when charging an EV. Tech is on board phone and hackable so introduce an official motion sensitive version.

There are videos on You Tube of the Carbridge/LetsView/ApowerMirror applications that that enable you to mirror your iphone on your car entertainment display piggybacking on Apple CarPlay which made me wonder if it was doable. The apps might change frame rate but if they do it might not be a stretch for Apple to integrate automatic changes to frame rate within the CarPlay wrapper.

I can see how to show the Speed Limit on Apple Maps but I cannot get it to warn me if I exceed it, unless I am missing something. That would be a really nice feature. For that need I use Waze but I find it difficult to make Waze the default navigation app - is that possible?
I think if I remember when you toggle between announcements on and off, there were alerts too and it only warned when approaching speed cameras. Unless it’s changed since I used it last. I always keep it muted! 😅
CarPlay won’t have weather, it doesn’t exist. Are you sure that’s not an app on the car? I’ve seen that on Mercedes models before (and of course you can talk to it as well)
That’s alright! Glad you enjoyed it! Apple have released the iOS 18 public beta now so might be worth checking out if you’re on the latest version. If you’re on the developer beta, problems and bugs are common things that can happen.
Sorry not sure on V177, what make is that? Apple CarPlay varies from car manufacturer to car manufacturer. Not all cars can output full screen CarPlay, just depends on the multimedia system.
Is there an easy way to adjust the volume of notifications in CarPlay? I find them to be startlingly loud on my Mercedes, even when music or audio is low. The only way I’ve figured it out is to turn down all notifications on my phone itself, or silencing it like you mention in the video, but it seems that I shouldn’t have to do that.
The update in this would solve that (sort of) you can have it silence the notifications in the car but not when you’re out and about. Sadly not seen a way to turn it down though
I would also like to use the next version of CarPlay, but Mercedes is not opting for that at this time. I read that they feel they would no longer be able to monitize their own infotainment apps via MercedesMe. It's disappointing, but perhaps in the future...
Only Porsche & Aston Martin have confirmed it at the moment…if I can get my hands on a demo of it, I would love to! Very true, car manufacturers all put their name down two years but now in 2024 they seem reluctant to do so or are very slow at the thought of it.
If anything that would come in next gen 2 stuff, however they’re trying to get manufacturers on board first with simple things like speed and A/C controls
Hey Nick, Would next gen carplay taking over the cars display of speed, rpm, etc work without a mobile network connection? I don’t know about the UK but in Australia even the major highways & expressways have mobile blackspots where there’s no reception. I don’t think “sorry officer I didn’t know I was speeding cause I had no reception” is gonna cut it 😅
Yes it would take over but it directly communicates with the car’s systems. That’s why it won’t work on any physical car that’s being sold today. It’ll only work on cars that manufactures have built from the ground up. Aston Martin & Porsche have both confirmed there is a model coming out this year which whatever it is, I want to test and see!
I have been wondering about Apple CarPlay in Mercedes GLA 250e. The model of the car is 2022 and only offers wired CarPlay, yet it only appears to cover half the screen. I have been searching for any solution regarding this issue in order to make it fullscreen, but have found nothing. Is there any way to make it look as it is in the video?
Sadly not all cars can do full screen CarPlay. There are other manufacturers who have come across the same before. For Mercedes it’s a common question which I’ve answered on my FAQ series here: th-cam.com/video/N9x56XWdjIo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=mlzuNGtciSlsdcdb&t=537 Basically it’s because MBUX (also known as NTG 6) on Mercedes is available in two screen sizes, 7” & 10.25”. When designing & coding I’m led to believe that you can only choose one (to maintain compatibility) for everything. So to make sure it works on all models, Mercedes of course had to go with the 7” version, which is perfect for 7” owners but of course leads to a cropped experience if you have a 10.25” screen. NTG 7 found in some new cars have higher faster processors and have one screen size leading to a full screen experience on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hope that explains potentially why it’s like that on some cars!

since at started using carplay on ios 18 i have an issue. i’m listen to music,then i receive a phone call and after the call it goes back to the music but no sound comes out
This may sound silly but try turning the phone off and back on Then if that doesn’t work try these things: -Un-pair and re-pair back up to the car Delete from Bluetooth menu and CarPlay menu on the phone. Don’t forget to also delete from the car - If that doesn’t work you could try reset network setting which does reset some elements of CarPlay. But I honestly don’t think that would be the cause.

I'd love if Apple would bring back the Whatsapp icon into the left column where you see last 3 opened apps. It was very useful to check for new messages, no matter what app you have open. Can't even figure on what ground they decide to pull it off. It's just stupid.

In my case (iPhone 14, iOS 17.5), somewhere in the last past months, that feature was silently killed, surely through out one of the iOS updates. Please, I need help. I bought Apple CarPlay some time ago. In my Mercedes Me app, it says it's activated. But when I try to use it in my car, it doesn't work. When I go to license activation, it says it's deactivated and the last update was back in 2021 so I went to Mercedes so they updated it and still it shows updated 2021.Please, if someone knows something, I would be very happy and thankful
Have you tried reaching out to Mercedes me support on the app? I feel like someone who works at Mercedes should be able to take a look. On their app press MENU, HELP, CONTACT SUPPORT
And you’ve not called back with a reference number they gave you? I’ve called them once about something I had an issue with and the whole thing was sorted within a couple of days
Well it would be either their support thing on the app or a dealer but I’m pretty sure if it’s a purchase from the store you’ll need to chat to their Mercedes me support. I would advise calling them though not via email. Not sure what else to suggest, sorry wish I could help but you’ll need someone who works at Mercedes to help.
Feature I want is multi language MAPS. English version of maps, calling out a German street gives useless response from Siri. How about weather over the road maps so you know you’re heading for a storm.

I thought it was universally understood, Apple doesn't really care about what it's customers think about Carplay. It's better than Android Auto, so I can't complain too much but the restrictions they impose are a real bummer.
@@npoleary It was really just a mini-rant on Apple believing they're smarter than we are. As you stated, a weather app doesn't seem like it should be a distraction any more than the apps they do allow. If Apple had asked it's users they would likely have said the same, but Apple didn't ask, they just dictated.

Apple CarPlay will work on any car with CarPlay as it’s your phone. So it’ll will work on any Mercedes model (as long as it has CarPlay)

I do use the Apple Calendar in CarPlay, but it’s only a single destination at a time. I was thinking more about planning a route to do all your errands for the day. For example, “I need to pick up dry cleaning, but groceries, drop off a cake at Molly’s, but pick up the kids from school at 3p.”

Is full screen apple car play only available on NTG7 and above models? I have 2020 a35 AMG with NTG6 and its only partial screen
Yep sadly
For Mercedes? Yes MBUX NTG 6 will always have a cropped screen.
This is because it has two screen sizes available for purchase for one multimedia system.

It’s a hardware thing, been like it apparently since 2018/2019 so I doubt it’ll change now

This might simply be a quirk in IOS 18, but since running the Beta the sound in the car only comes from one speaker, then after a minute or 4, the rest of the speakers catch up. It is only through Carplay as the radio is unaffceted
Unless you’re a developer it’s best not to run iOS 18 currently. (I tried it on a spare phone and there were a few bugs as expected)
On your phone though, help them out, you’ll have a new app called “Feedback”. Pop a report into them and submit it straight to Apple 👍🏼

My CarPlay has completely stopped working now. No option in the Settings on the phone. It charges when connected to my car USB as it always has. However now CarPlay is not coming up. And I didn’t back up before my last update 😑
Try deleting the pairing on the phone and the car and re-connecting back up.
It is a Developer Beta software currently meaning it is just for developers. There is a high chance that’ll you encounter issues until it’s fully released later this year.

Ah no wireless compatibility came out on their facelift a year or so later.

I’ll give the next gen CarPlay a miss if it’s only on the new cars with speed limiters, tracking and geo fencing so they can control your car. I’ll stick with my slightly older car with limited government control.

Really interesting video and ahead of other influencers 😊 You alluded to it but I would like to see Apple introduce a You Tube/Netflix app for Car Play linked to motion sensing of phone to enable video when car is stationary for say when charging an EV. Tech is on board phone and hackable so introduce an official motion sensitive version.

There are videos on You Tube of the Carbridge/LetsView/ApowerMirror applications that that enable you to mirror your iphone on your car entertainment display piggybacking on Apple CarPlay which made me wonder if it was doable. The apps might change frame rate but if they do it might not be a stretch for Apple to integrate automatic changes to frame rate within the CarPlay wrapper.

I can see how to show the Speed Limit on Apple Maps but I cannot get it to warn me if I exceed it, unless I am missing something. That would be a really nice feature. For that need I use Waze but I find it difficult to make Waze the default navigation app - is that possible?
I think if I remember when you toggle between announcements on and off, there were alerts too and it only warned when approaching speed cameras. Unless it’s changed since I used it last. I always keep it muted! 😅
CarPlay has the weather app available in my 2023 Mercedes.
CarPlay won’t have weather, it doesn’t exist. Are you sure that’s not an app on the car? I’ve seen that on Mercedes models before (and of course you can talk to it as well)

Apple CarPlay varies from car manufacturer to car manufacturer. Not all cars can output full screen CarPlay, just depends on the multimedia system.
Is there an easy way to adjust the volume of notifications in CarPlay? I find them to be startlingly loud on my Mercedes, even when music or audio is low. The only way I’ve figured it out is to turn down all notifications on my phone itself, or silencing it like you mention in the video, but it seems that I shouldn’t have to do that.
The update in this would solve that (sort of) you can have it silence the notifications in the car but not when you’re out and about.
Sadly not seen a way to turn it down though

I would also like to use the next version of CarPlay, but Mercedes is not opting for that at this time. I read that they feel they would no longer be able to monitize their own infotainment apps via MercedesMe. It's disappointing, but perhaps in the future...

Very true, car manufacturers all put their name down two years but now in 2024 they seem reluctant to do so or are very slow at the thought of it.

I don’t know about the UK but in Australia even the major highways & expressways have mobile blackspots where there’s no reception.

Yes it would take over but it directly communicates with the car’s systems. That’s why it won’t work on any physical car that’s being sold today. It’ll only work on cars that manufactures have built from the ground up.
Aston Martin & Porsche have both confirmed there is a model coming out this year which whatever it is, I want to test and see!

I have been wondering about Apple CarPlay in Mercedes GLA 250e. The model of the car is 2022 and only offers wired CarPlay, yet it only appears to cover half the screen. I have been searching for any solution regarding this issue in order to make it fullscreen, but have found nothing. Is there any way to make it look as it is in the video?
Sadly not all cars can do full screen CarPlay. There are other manufacturers who have come across the same before.

Basically it’s because MBUX (also known as NTG 6) on Mercedes is available in two screen sizes, 7” & 10.25”. When designing & coding I’m led to believe that you can only choose one (to maintain compatibility) for everything.
So to make sure it works on all models, Mercedes of course had to go with the 7” version, which is perfect for 7” owners but of course leads to a cropped experience if you have a 10.25” screen.
NTG 7 found in some new cars have higher faster processors and have one screen size leading to a full screen experience on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Hope that explains potentially why it’s like that on some cars!

Yes it is….
This may sound silly but try turning the phone off and back on
Then if that doesn’t work try these things:
-Un-pair and re-pair back up to the car
Delete from Bluetooth menu and CarPlay menu on the phone. Don’t forget to also delete from the car
- If that doesn’t work you could try reset network setting which does reset some elements of CarPlay. But I honestly don’t think that would be the cause.

I'd love if Apple would bring back the Whatsapp icon into the left column where you see last 3 opened apps. It was very useful to check for new messages, no matter what app you have open. Can't even figure on what ground they decide to pull it off. It's just stupid.

In my case (iPhone 14, iOS 17.5), somewhere in the last past months, that feature was silently killed, surely through out one of the iOS updates. Please, I need help. I bought Apple CarPlay some time ago. In my Mercedes Me app, it says it's activated. But when I try to use it in my car, it doesn't work. When I go to license activation, it says it's deactivated and the last update was back in 2021 so I went to Mercedes so they updated it and still it shows updated 2021.Please, if someone knows something, I would be very happy and thankful

I tried it several times. They always say "we will help you as fast as possible." Well, that was 1 1/2 years ago.

Well it would be either their support thing on the app or a dealer but I’m pretty sure if it’s a purchase from the store you’ll need to chat to their Mercedes me support. I would advise calling them though not via email.

Feature I want is multi language MAPS. English version of maps, calling out a German street gives useless response from Siri. How about weather over the road maps so you know you’re heading for a storm.

I thought it was universally understood, Apple doesn't really care about what it's customers think about Carplay. It's better than Android Auto, so I can't complain too much but the restrictions they impose are a real bummer.
What gives you the impression they don’t care? I assumed it was more of a safety thing than anything else. For example no video playback etc
@@npoleary It was really just a mini-rant on Apple believing they're smarter than we are. As you stated, a weather app doesn't seem like it should be a distraction any more than the apps they do allow. If Apple had asked it's users they would likely have said the same, but Apple didn't ask, they just dictated.
