“What will I tell my heart,” recorded on the day my grandmother was born, still alive today. How the world has changed since then, and all in a single lifetime.
Listening again, this must the very best version of 'Sweet Leilani' ever recorded. I've literally heard dozens of versions, but this soooo beautiful. Roy Smeck is playing a Rickenbacker electric steel guitar, but still uses loads of 'old' chords when an acoustic Hawaiian guitar didn't have yet the presence, the electric ones had. All selections are superb, but Sweet Leilani really stands out.
TRACK TIMING: 00:08 [1] BILLY BISSETT AND HIS ORCHESTRA - Ev'rything I Do -- v. Billy Bissett 03:10 [2] HARRY ROY AND HIS ORCHESTRA - What Will I Tell My Heart? --v. Ray Ellington 06:19 [3] AMBROSE AND HIS ORCHESTRA - Sweet Leilani -- v. Sam Browne 09:20 [4] JAY WILBUR AND HIS BAND - Seal It With A Kiss -- v. Sam Costa 12:32 [5] JACK HYLTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA - A Melody For Two -- v. Jewel Faye 15:47 [6] ROY FOX AND HIS ORCHESTRA - I've Got Beginner's Luck -- v. Mary Lee
Brilliant music, I love 'what will I tell my heart'. This music is perfect for just playing in the background while I'm pottering around the place tinkering with stuff and pretending to work.
This is sweet music - how great the 30s were. I don't think there's ever been a decade like it for musical evergreens. The Sixties were great too in a different way, but I don't think even that decade produced music which will last as long as those of the 30s.
What a AWESOME Selection of FANTASTIC Recording`s! I LOVE THESE! Usually I do not go past 1936! But these and there are exceptions to that! And these are GREAT Records indeed!
Really enjoyed these. Thanks for uploading them. Particulalry enjoyed the Jack Hylton one with the Jewel Faye vocal as I have only ever heard her sing one other song (There's a small hotel) She certainly had a great voice
I would also add that these are very good transfers. Can I ask what you use to decrackle those HMV's and Columbia disks. I always find it a difficult balance to reduce it without affecting the sound of the music.
I've been using this program since Windows 98, and heartily endorse your enthusiasm for it. The speed conversion combinations are very useful. Keep on with your excellent work. (Edited for typos)
Oh, Lovely Billy Bissett from Canada, married to Alice Mann, erstwhile singer with Jack Hylton. As a singer he's a bit challenged by the loping melody....; Jewel Faye singing with Jack Hylton had come back with Jack ("Jack's Back!") from the States with The Swingtette vocal group who waxed a half-dozen vocals with Hylton in England. Faye was the only solo singer drawn from the group. Trombone-solo most likely by Woolf Philips, arrangement sounds like a Melle Weersma effort, a Dutch arranger - band leader who gave up his Dutch band to arrangem with Hylton. After his sojourn in England he went to Argentina where he wrote Penny Serenade, a massive world-wide hit (even recorded in Nazi Germany). Roy Fox's swingy recording features Art Christmas on baritone sax after the vocal
My ex-wife led a Hawaiian dance group and this was their signature tune, so I'm particularly attached to it. I've heard lots of different versions, but this is quite probably my favourite. And I love Sam Browne. Bowlly was great, but limited, because he had hardly more than an octave. Sam could literally sing everything. The whole selection is beautiful, showing how superb British bands were at the time.
A long-belated reply, Peter. But as per your comments about Al Bowlly and Same Browne. Both were truly excellent but, in my view, Al Bowlly was the greatest of all the band singers of the 30s, probably of all time.
I agree completely- and not just dance bands and popular music- but film, exploration, science, literature, theatre- so much, despite the depression, the Spanish Civil war and other skirmishes in India, Ethiopia, etc., the rise of the Nazis and the gathering world war clouds- a remarkable decade, and my favourite though I was born in the 40's.
I have a version of " What Would I Tell My Heart" posted on my channel by Dolly Dawn. I prefer it over this version. He makes it kind of comical but Dolly makes it emotional, which I thinks fits much better.

Beginners Luck was such a fun song. I liked them all, but I liked that one most of all.
Все эти мелодии столетней давности - "бальзам на сердце" мне уставшей от бешеного ритма нынешнего времени ❤❤❤👍🌷🌷⚘️🌷🌷⚘️🌷
What an exquisite selection of great english dancebands of 1937! It´s a pleasure to listen to. Thank you!

To me, Jewel Faye kind of sounds like an older Mary Lee. Thanks for uploading these treasures Peter!
What a beautiful version of Sweet Leilani.

Wouldn't the hotel/nightclub scene have been glamorously wonderful then? The war sufficiently remote at that moment.
Extraordinary. Sweet Leilani a standout. Many thanks.
A story of communities coming together before and after World War 2. People came together in not only emotional escape but for support. ❤
What a AWESOME Selection of FANTASTIC Recording`s! I LOVE THESE! Usually I do not go past 1936! But these and there are exceptions to that! And these are GREAT Records indeed!
I must do another 1937 selection soon, but in the next week or so I have more from 1936 to come.
AWESOME!
It was the year before I was born, but I love the music and play it almost every day
Yep! The year I turned four. But I loved the music of this era. Remember it on radio at the time.
Love the Harry Roy side with Ray Ellington's "Fats" style vocal - hilarious. Many thanks again for more great music in wonderful sound.
Yes!
Nice.

Thanks for these treats.
+Richard Moon My pleasure :-)
GREAT 👍
We think alike on this, ziggy. Yes, I too was born in the 40s so wasn't around to personally experience the 30s, but oh how good it was. Cheers!

Nice transfers - vocals very pleasing - many thanks
Thank you for your comment. Much appreciated!

I use a fairly inexpensive programme which works fairly well - Magix Audio Cleaning Lab 17 deluxe. There are more up-to-date versions.
Yes!

Are your records on here in a very good condition or have you doctored them for uploading . .?
The 4 thumbs down must be from Rockers! LOL
There's always an idiot somewhere. If they don't like it, why don't they simply stay away instead of juvenile comments?
Hi, can I use a bunch of your stuff for this mod I'm making?
