Not uncommon, many British orchestras were also comprised of foreign musicians and some, for example such as orchestra leaders Lew Stone and Ray Starita were American.
They often did this (and still do e.g. Adele) since they wished to succeed in the US, always a huge market.
There were also Americans that sang with British accents!
