I wanted to mention that Spokane hosts not only Bloomsday, we also host Hoopfest one of the biggest 3 on 3 basketball tournaments in the US. We also have over 70 lakes within 30 miles of the city. To say we are a big basketball town with Gonzaga is an understatement! :) (also it is pronounced Gone- Zah- Ga) Go Zags! It was interesting to watch a video about Spokane as a native. Thank you we do have a beautiful city here.

Next time you visit, skip Lake CDA and head to Lake Pend Oreille. Head up to Sandpoint for some shopping, lunch and sights. Then save room in your stomach and head back down the lake to Bayview and have a delicious, sunset dinner at The Lake House. Enjoy no cell service and an incredible view you won't forget. You'll even get a live show on the dock if you time it right.

Great video, you really nailed it! I've lived in Spokane almost 30 years. So, if you don't mind I would like to clarify a couple of items: The cat walks are called "Skywalks," Gonzaga is pronounced gone-ZAY-guh, If you really want to see the falls come in the spring. (The flow usually peaks around Memorial Day) Spokane has a thriving foodie scene, too! There are 5 ski resorts within a couple of hours. One is 45 minutes from Downtown, another even rivals Vail! Wild life? In addition to wild turkeys I have seen deer, racoons, moose, a cougar even a black bear pass through my yard and I live less than 2 miles from downtown! I have lived in Central and South America as well as Europe and stumbled into this place around 1998 and see no reason to leave!

Wow.. I lived in Spokane for 12 years starting in the late '80s, and it's hardly changed from what I see here. I''ve always considered it my hometown, even though I only moved there after graduating in western WA. It's an amazing city. Soooo many parks! And perfect 4 seasons. I've wanted to move back for years.
The "pacific NW weather" comment isn't very true though. Yeah it rains, but nothing even close to western WA weather! The climate is pretty "average" in Spokane. It gives you everything.

The Bloomsday Run is the kickoff for the Lilac Festival which brings Riverfront Park and Downtown full of activities with focus on our beloved lilcs..until the following weekend when The Armed Forces Torchlight Parade presents the Best of the Great Northwest high school marching bands and floats contributed by the busy people in towns from Western Montana, Northern Idaho, Washington and Oregon.
It will make you feel like a kid again when you suddenly realize you've been grinning since the start. And a great big, bright red, very shiny firetruck at the very end. It feels like the carnival had left town. Lots of fun, pretty girls in pretty dresses.
I do love that parade. Followed by a long line to get on our prized Loof Carousel and glide around in circles surrounded by lights, music and all the other beautiful animals.
    But that's another story.

We have a lot of hospitals and other medical here. The per capita of medical staff to people is fairly high (@20% of jobs in Spokane are in the medical field). I joke about Spokane is the place retirees go for 4 seasons. I'm pushing 65, retired (Army then again IT), and have visited most of the hospitals (including the VA). Most of the hospitals are bilingual speaking Russian and Spanish, with Russian heard more often than Spanish.
The best thing is to just do an internet search for hospitals in Spokane.

@@terrifiorelli9819 It's sad how much it's changed. When i moved here from southern CA I was really surprised there was NO graffiti, no gangs. There wasn't so many homeless people then, they'd stay at the Mission or the House of Charity. I'd walk home to Browne's Addition (beautiful neighborhood of old homes, mostly college students and elderly folks) from Henry's Pub or The Big Dipper downtown late at night and felt totally safe. (I didn't get in strangers cars so I wasn't concerned about the serial killer...though i knew 2 of the girls. And the only one who actually got away from him after he shot her)
Rents were amazingly cheap- you could work part time and afford a studio apt. I could always find a job, even with no experience- Olsten temps found jobs for me every day i wanted to work so i got to try a bunch of different things until i figured out what i wanted to do. I went to school at Spokane Falls community college, the Pell Grant supported me while i was in the graphic design program (and art supplies are expensive! Those were the days when you used paper, pen & ink, rulers, etc) and I didn't need roommates to help pay rent like where i grew up it was at least 400% more.
Jeez I didn't realize how lucky i was back then!

@oodiejubro6250 Are the positives good enough to move to over the west coast? Every year the people are worse, as is the politics. Spokane looks incredibly beautiful and has great geography, but I get bombarded with quite a bit of the super negatives like increase in homelessness and heavy drug usage? Is this overblown? That kind of stuff is sadly pervasive anywhere that's a mid sized city, so I don't know if it just get overblown for Spokane.

I like Spokane, there are some beautiful parks and some great people there, but don't forget that there are some truly awful and horrifying places in Spokane. One of the neighborhoods close to the courthouse is the lowest income neighborhood in the western United States. There is an enormous amount of poverty and criminality and a lot of people come to the town out of multi-generational poverty in the surrounding rural areas, so it is a pretty rough place if you are in the wrong part of Spokane valley or close to the court house or up by the northern part of the town.

It is fine during the day downtown. Just don't be out late at night in the downtown area around the bars. Stay in groups of three or more. People that drink can get unruly. Avoid the East Sprague area at night and railroad overpass walkways at night. Really for the size of the city it is not that bad. Just like any city--if you park downtown don't leave valuables in view in your car. Avoid the lower South hill, especially the East side. Mainly at night. The lady narrating is mispronouncing a lot of things. She mispronounced Gonzaga and other words..
Spokane Valley in the poorer district seems to get a lot of crime reports? Not sure why other than there is the new homeless shelter on East Trent. So do not get a place to live near there. Also don't get a place to live around the Courthouse district. That area is sketchy too.. Overall it is a great place to live! And they have hired a ton more police officers so they have like tripled the coverage downtown. Which seems to have cut down on car prowling. Most of the crime is related to drug use and people breaking into cars for stuff to pawn for money for their drug habit. Or shootings over drug deals gone bad. Again in the same neighborhoods. Outside of those areas you will find a beautiful diverse area with something for everyone. 😊

Spokane has come a LONG way during my lifetime here. Seattle tends to get most of the money, so yes, we’ve been working on a (one🤣) N/S freeway for 30 yrs and it will prob take another 30 to finish, until recently you could disappear into the streets potholes, and we now have enough restaurants around that people actually want to go to, so you may need to make reservations. My highschool years - downtown had a Nordstroms and a NEWBERRYS. Oh, maybe the Cresent/BonMarche. College, nightlife consisted of maybe two bars, 3 if you included N Side or Valley. Most people left for college and didn’t come back. It was a great place to raise kids, or come to retire. It’s actually not nearly as rainy/snowy as it gets credit for, it’s just that our winters seem to last all year. And it is Beautiful in the PNW. Our 4 seasons are phenomenal - you get your city life (small), but in any direction within 20 minutes you’re in natures play ground. Seattles 3 hours away, but with technology and all the renovations Spokane has had, there’s really not the reasons needed for when we used to take off (shopping, cooler people, etc.) Of course there’s crime and homeless, where isn’t there in a metropolitan area? I’m a photographer, I work indoors and out, and I’ve never once had a problem with any homeless, street kids, drunk college kids, or what have you. Show people kindness, respect, and don’t dilly dally in areas that clearly aren’t a place you need to be in (we all know when we’ve turned a wrong corner) and you’ll probably be fine. In fact, I’ve actually been protected by homeless in areas they consider sketch, no one has ever tried to steal my gear or stab me. Now, my daughter has had people try to open her car doors, while waiting at lights downtown. But she thinks they may have been domestic violence type situations. Otherwise, I couldn’t be more proud of how Spokane has slowly come along. It’s what you make of it - any city can suck if you’re a whiner. There’s tons of stuff to do and see, lots of great history mixed in with the new and if you don’t like it, go to Seattle 🥰😘

I've lived In spokane a couple years now and I'll tell you that downtown is horrible after 8pm once the city lights come on the tweaker come out there's shootings everyday police chases every day and has one of the highest criminal rates in Washington per population wise there's so many reckless drivers and to many crashes a day to count, the down town area specifically has homeless people on every street corner and drugdealers on every other corner, I came from a very high gang violent town and I've been pushed and pressed by fake wannabe gangbangers frequently in spokane multiple people pulling guns out on me one time even getting mugged at northern quest there's a bridge downtown nicknamed suicide bridge because the amount of people that jump and hang themselves from it yearly overall tho the park downtown is a great visit and if you visit spokane make sure it's during the day

I'm really regretting moving to Spokane. Fine place to visit but not the place to live. Horrible streets and sidewalks. So many stores have closed. Rent is to high for these little shacks. Garbage everywhere on streets and in shopping center parking lots. Homelessness is insane along with open drinking. Cars are constantly being broken into and many house fires are done by bad actors.
