    Alta bans snowboarders purely for revenue purposes. I see a lot of comments wondering why they hate snowboarders and truth is I don't think they really care all that much anymore. Its a financial decision. In Utah you have a very interesting segment of the population that views themselves as "elite". This same population tends to favor skiing quite heavily and is willing to pay a premium to enjoy their own resort void of "rowdy" snow boarders. Alta offers a ski only resort within 30 min of SLC at the top of the mountain with the best snow. It is a beautiful resort and they are able to charge a premium to the wealthy elite for access. A season pass was over $1500 per person this year. Far more expensive than anything else in the entire state. If the snowboard restriction was ever removed you would see Alta lose customers to Deer Valley and Park City. Alta would lose it elitist status and the customers that go with it.

      The other aspect of it is that there's so much overcrowding in the Cottonwoods already that resorts really don't have much incentive to entice a new group of patrons (x100 for Covid season). Solitude started charging for parking last year, Brighton has a weekend rule of 4+ HOV only in their main lot...none of the resorts are hurting for more customers.

      But thats the other thing, its not like how it used to be, even for Utah. I know alot of older dentist type and super rich people who got into snowboarding also because freeride snowboarding. The amount of people they lose, would be easily regained by the older wealthy snowboarders that want to purely freeride. The fact they don't have a park would easily bring those types of people. Alta is just afraid to try as its much like any boomer, afraid of the change. Same applies with deer valley. At this point with how snowboarding is going, they are almost hating on their own kind, the ski only gimmick only really worked up till the late 2000s. Now the ski hill industry is hurting as a whole because of this "rich kid" mentality and people think its all only for those rich elite, which they are not wrong. In 2030+, if the way things keep going, alta won't survive with skiers alone. Hell, even if they only allowed hard boot snowboarders, that be no different than letting the rich ski racing father with their GS skis, but never raced in his life. Lol ALSO, 1500$ is fairly normal price. Thats about the price of whistler and some other hills.

Snowboarders just pick a line and go down smoothly whereas skiers are like flopping all over the gd place, which is funny because you always hear skiers complain about how snowboarders are the ones 'taking up the whole mountain.' I wish everyone would just chill TF out though and have FUN. Literally what it's all about. Fun. Which both are--they're both different and offer different types of fun--I love them both now.

    Old school skier watching snowboarding come into its own. Absolutely no different from skiing. Both go down snow either on skis or snowboard. When skiing started to decline, I saw snowboarding rejuvenating winter sports since good parents raising their kids allowed them to choose skis or boards. The rest is history. Sharing the mountains with each group's newbies equally dangerous until mastering the skills to become competent. With snowboarders, snow sports was injected with more money to support winter sports. For places like Alta and Deer Park, smacks of elitism, monied snobbery, I'm holier than thou attitude only monied businesses can support with a large following of effete snobs who forgot where they started from. I skied Alta before snowboards were invented and presumed they opened their arms for the increase in money (lift ticket sales) like every other well run mountain sports company seeing the growth potential of a new group of snow aficionados. I'm disappointed Alta bans boarding. Skied Deer Park too years ago. Monied mountain. My guess is they are doing well without snowboarders supporting them to continue keeping their noses up in the air. The really fine boarders carve so gracefully the same as surfing on water. Anyone not appreciating how some can carve on a snowboard like surfing on water are blind without imagination.

    This is awesome! Having worked at Alta last year, you'd be surprised how many employees snowboard! Though I think a huge factor of not allowing boarding is the fact that the terrain really doesn't allow for it. Many of the better runs require allot of traversing to get to. Allot of us embraced skiing and learned how to make turns both ways which was super fun as well. I dont think alta needs to change, or will. But that doesn't mean boarders can't still shred! I am a life long skier who grew up on a ski only mountain and was there when it changed and they started to allow snowboarders and I can say the mountain is so much better with boarders. The mountain is a place for fun and not discrimination based on something as trivial as whether you ski or board

    One thing people tend to overlook is that snowboarders and skiiers do affect the snow quality in different ways. Skiiers make more uniform and moguly terrain, while snowboarders make flatter and more variable terrain. However, while there is a difference, it isn't that big a deal. I think the whole feud is stupid. Lets agree that snowboarders and skiiers lower snow quality just as much as each other.

      Thank you man! I’m a skateboarder and I totally understand. I’ve never had an issue with bmx. And while I can’t stand 🛴 scooter kids who have tunnel vision at skateparks I don’t think they should be banned. They just need to be taught proper park etiquette instead of having their clueless parents drop them off like it’s a playground. If Alta wanted to make an etiquette/safety course for snowboarders I’d be totally stoked on that! Some resorts make you take a short course to use their terrain parks and it makes them safer and more fun for those using them.

    I’ve always thought it was interesting. I ski and snowboard and can see both perspectives. I can see the perspective of a snowboarder and letting everyone enjoy the snow. Everyone should enjoy snowsports. I also understand the draw as a skier going to a ski only resort where you don’t worry about people strapping in at the top of the lift or things like that. I can’t say I know where I sit on the issue. Great video!

    • @louie4119
      @louie4119 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yo I came looking for a comment like this to discuss. I also have the dual perspective having started snowboarding young and switching to skiing as a teenager so I could keep up with my dad in the backcountry and so we had an easier time getting around together. I also live in Australia so the Southern Hemisphere is my bread and butter where our conditions and terrain are not always so bountiful - we literally don’t have enough room not to share, and we’re usually making the best of what we have snow-wise.
      On top of that we have (especially in Australia) arguably a much lower average level of experience on and around snow, coupled with a high level of interest in trying snowboarding as opposed to skiing (we surf and skate a lot, so the logical conclusion of most when venturing into snowsports for the first time is snowboarding).
      I have two points to contribute - personally I believe learner snowboarders are more dangerous than learner skiers, OP is right about lift exit issues etc.
      My second point is that snowboards will always displace a higher amount of snow than skis, especially when piloted by learners who spend most of their descent with the board horizontal on their comfortable edge. In warm, slushy conditions, or when there’s not much snow to start with, in my experience over a day this increased displacement of snow by learner snowboarders can reduce a run to grass and dirt that might have gone the distance otherwise.
      I’m all for sharing, have lots of mates who snowboard and we all ride together just fine, and I don’t get too worked up about the things I mentioned earlier, but since it’s a discussion I thought I’d share my honest perspective.
      I also kinda find it strange that the whole poaching thing is so consistent and such a big deal. The USA has literally hundreds of inclusive resorts and hills. Why are you so worried about the 3 that don’t permit snowboarding? And if they’re all rich snobs and don’t want to cater to you then why are you interested in riding the hill? Can’t you just go somewhere else and have a better time? No disrespect meant at all, I can vibe with the civil disobedience thing and personally wouldn’t want to ski a segregated area either... but like... why?

    • @BoredProgression
      @BoredProgression  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Louis Diepold I appreciate your well thought out comments and opinions! Thank you for adding constructively to the conversation. My (and many other’s) complaint is that Alta operates on National Forest land. Public lands that anyone can walk on/hike etc., It’s also basically attached to Snowbird which does allow snowboarding. You can actually buy a Snowbird Alta pass (if you ski) and you can ski between the 2 resorts all day. I don’t care about the other 2 ski-only resorts which both operate on private property. Every time I’m at the edge of Snowbird I have to watch people go in and out of the Alta gate, yet I can’t because of the rotation of my stance. Legally I’m not trespassing if I enter Alta from Snowbird and ride down. But I cannot get on their chair lifts. Do you see how frustrating that is?

    • @louie4119
      @louie4119 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bored Progression yeah okay I can see where you’re coming from now. I never knew Snowbird and Alta shared a pass, which changes my thinking. Seems a little contrived, like all of the angles Alta seem have presented over the years for their decision. Honestly it seems like an easier pill to swallow that the private resorts just say no because they can as opposed to Alta always having something different to say. Strange issue. Thanks for clarification and have a good season man!

    • @iancrandall780
      @iancrandall780 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bored Progression I can agree with your points about Alta. I appreciate the facts you brought to the table about it! It truly changed my perspective. I can say with education on the issue I can make the educated decision to support what you’re pushing for.
      I think what is an even bigger issue is above sharing with skiers or snowboarders is sharing with an inexperienced rider period. People love to say it’s one sport or the other but the huge issue is people who don’t pay attention and all hang out at the top of the lift(skiers and snowboarders) or in the middle of the run, who don’t look up the hill when they cut across, when they blast in front of people. That’s the problem that needs addressing. Not what you’re riding but how you’re riding down the hill is the big issue that needs correction and education.
      Honestly if everyone paid attention and got out of the way when they want to sit down or pay attention when they maneuver down the hill no one would care what you’re riding I’d argue.

    Love the vid and glad you got to check out the terrain! I personally have absolutely zero issues with boarders, in fact my moms one and we’re constantly riding together at the bird, however, it is a completely different experience riding on a resort with just skiers. Something I actually wish they had for boarders too! These days I feel like It’s less of an “I hate boarders” issue as much as the resort now can “pride” themselves on being one of only a few resorts that still cater to that specific of an audience. I may get absolutely scrutinized for saying this but I hope someday there will be a boarder only resort for you guys to check out too! Still, we're all out there to play and we should get along. I may even get a board myself, after riding my wheelman all summer, seems it would be fun.

      Ya but most snowboarders are cool enough to not be selfish dicks. And would share and let everyone join however they want to. Just like we did with parks. Jumps, rails, half-pipes, and and all of the new Olympic sport's that came about because of snowboarding. Snowboarders didn't say; Only Snowboards In The Parks. Even though in the beginning it was very very rare that you would ever see a skier in the park. Most snowboarders are just not like some skiers who are stuck in a snobby old way. But not all skiers are the same. Just like not all snowboarders are the same.
      I do both, even though I have not been skiing in years. (I just love snowboarding more.) In one way, I think it definitely sucks that snowboards can't use Alta's lifts. But in another, if it keeps a lot of the stuck up skiers in one secluded place, and off of, and out of the way at other resorts? Then that can be a good thing too, right? I try to find the positive and best in everything I can.

    Hey man, look up DRIFT boards. They are a cross between snowshoes and skis with climbing skins. The base model is about 250$ if your looking for a cheaper option they work really well. And the best advantage is they fit to skin trails already so you wont wreck them for the skiiers and splitboarders. Only downside is having to put them on your backpack while you ride. They dont feel to bad while riding though.

      It’s mostly a people thing. Snowboarders used to and still do to a smaller extent shrug off the expected rules of the slopes and tend to be a rowdier crowd than the skiers. The way they move down the mountain is also different from skiers. Snowboarders slide much more which older skiers don’t appreciate because it screws up the flow of the moguls. I personally don’t really care but I understand why they want a skier only resort.

    • @rich7447
      @rich7447 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamiewilliams2460 I get it with the moguls, but if I am being honest a lot of the skiers that I have seen in the moguls are in survival mode and doing a lot more damage than the boarders (who tend to steer clear of them in the first place). It's getting rare to see anyone ski the fall line through them.
      I have a set of Hart Fusions that I use as an east coast all mountain ski and I get a lot of strange looks on the lift and comments about how straight and skinny my skis are. Every time I explain that it is a specialty mogul ski almost everyone tells me how much they hate moguls.
